This one is very well-known and I've sung it before, so I'm doing a new version with completely different verses. There exist dozens of verses so I've chosen a few different ones that I like a lot.

Leave Her, Johnny - Lyrics
1. Oh my poor old mother, she wrote to me.
She wrote me to come home from sea.
2. Beware those packet ships, I say.
For they'll steal your stores and your clothes away.
3. Oh I hope that you will never be,
In a gallows hell, the likes of she.
4. We were made to pump all night and day,
And we half-dead had beggar-all to say.
5. The Old Man swears, and the mate swears, too.
The whole crew swears and so would you.
6. We'll make her fast and stow our gear.
For the girls are waiting on the pier.
7. We've all grown old and weak and sad.
From too many years on this wooden-clad.
8. Come sing, me bullies, this farewell song.
If you sing it right, the work won't take long. Развлечения
“This ship is probably not in top condition”
Me too, ship. Me too.
You're always ship-shape.
@@SeanDagher XD wut
I need a pump to be in top condition too, if you know what I mean.
I know you’ve heard it before but you singing leave her Johnny can honestly bring me to tears with memories of Assassins Creed 4
Awesome. Glad to hear it.
im playing black flag rn :D and i already have nostalgia from this shanty xD
That’s what I like about the stream honestly is the wrong motion for where am I to Go me Johnny’s
@@SeanDagher i really love how much you teach in these videos. ive learned so much from shanty of the week^^
Gives me chills every time..
Sir, your singing was one of the highlights of Assassin's Creed Black Flag! Thank you for sharing your voice with the world.
Oh, it's my pleasure. Thanks for listening.
It is THE highlight of Assassin's Creed. That is the sole reason why Black Flag is good. Navigating The Jackdaw and listening to Mr. Sean Dahger.
@@aldoblack5982 Not to forget the Morrigan in AC Rogue... What a coincidence, they had the same shanty man... :P
@@SeanDagher Because of you, I almost never used the fast travel option, I could happily sail around the Caribbean, from mission to mission, or just cruise along for a while.
the "OHOO" between the "Leave her, Johnny, leave her" always tingles just the right part of my brain!
Mine too.
I love this shanty so much, it’s just sounds so spectacular
It gets pretty epic, right? There are so many great possibilities with this song.
"This shanty was often the last on a journey"
It had to be:
In a lot of cases, singing it before the end, or pulling into port in some cases, was a mutiny, and would see the sailor shot.
Yikes. Better not dock then.
The one dislike is Bartholomew Roberts
To be fair, I don't like him much either.
Your voice is iconic, this is my favorite shanty because of you.
Thanks! It's one of my favourites as well.
There is no other musical format that has the passion and feeling that shanties do. I love your work as it always gets to that place that runs chills up my arms and sets my mind at ease. Thank you!
You're welcome. I'm glad you like the song and the genre.
YES what a classic, this is what got me hooked on shanties in the first place. Love this rendition with new verses. Great work as always!!
Thanks, Cooper. I'm glad you like this version.
@@SeanDagher Wonderful singing! You bring back
those fascinating days and we get to to live them
ourselves through your chanting. 🏴☠️😜⛵⚓🐋❤
Thank you for introducing me to the world of sea shanties from AC4. Your voice is truly exceptional. Just know that somewhere in the world I'm singing along with you in my car.
It's actually really nice to think that people are singing along wherever they are. One day we'll get to sing all together again.
Love your work man.
i cry everytime whenever i listen to this song, i miss AC4 so much.
*WHO'S CUTTING THE DAMN ONIONS?!!*
Thanks Hello. I'm glad the song moves you.
No reason to cry fren, you can still play ac4, its still up on uplay
"we've all grown old and weak and sad" wow if this isn't real life summed up by 8 words I don't know what is. and god that voice smashs any other version of this song
Thanks Issa. I'm glad you like it. And, yes, those words really sum it up well.
Your voice is my childhood you have a legendary voice bro, ac4
Thanks Sleepy. I'm happy to have been a positive influence.
@@SeanDagher you are you got me into singing
Always one of my favorites. Loving the new verses, I swear!
Don’t swear.
Great. There are many more. Maybe I'll do a sequel in a couple of years.
That one lone dislike. This man is seriously talented with his voice.
Thanks Max. One dislike is pretty good.
someone accidentally clicked the dislike button probably
you hit all the necessities, yet your unique voice is what separates you from anyone else
This is my goddaughter's favourite song. I've sung it to her - your version from AC, actually - since she was a few days old. She is nearly three years old now and it still calms her down instantly if she is upset. Whenever she stays at my place I sing it to her to fall asleep to. I just found your channel and I'm so glad I did!
Hi Lena. I'm also glad that you found the channel. Thank you so much for relating the story about your goddaughter. I just love hearing about people singing to children.
Awww, you replied even though you posted this video months ago! We sing a lot of shanties. Roll the old chariot is another favourite. She even sticks to the refrain and lets me sing the shantyman lines, haha. I grew up in a sailing and shanty singing family myself and am just finishing a PhD in maritime history, so your channel feels very much like home. Thank you so much.
@@lenamoser3888 Very well-mannered of her to stick to the refrains. I wish my SOTW crew were so well-behaved.
Wow I have heard this when playing assassins creed and never knew the artist had the same last name as me! That’s awesome🙌
Habibi.
Could never leave my ship until this one ended, find myself still humming along to this sea shanty daily. It Never gets old! Your voice is awesome sir!
Thanks! This is a perfect song for the end of the voyage.
I was just looking for random songs to add to my shanty playlist and found this gem
Welcome!
@@SeanDagher about 5 seconds after I commented that I remembered where I have heard you from, I absolutely love the singing in Black Flag
Your voice is amazing! when I hear it seems to me to be at the time of the 18th century in 1720 and upwards, I travel with this beautiful song, I wish I was born in 1730 and sing this song with my crew, to our ship Johnny .. A big hug to your sailor from Brazil!
Thanks, G. And thanks for the nice 18th century image.
@@SeanDagher for nothing friend, and an honor to answer my comment
And then it appears, the skipper is due the pay. So the poor lad, after this last shanty, starts singing Pay Me My Money Down. :)
Ain't a ship on God's earth
That a sailor don't swear.
And we all want to leave her!
Thank you so much Sean. And can I just say that flat cap and mustache combo is perfect.
I'm glad you like it!
Sean Dagher owns this shanty. Nobody does it better.
Too kind, too kind.
Aw excellent. You posted just in time for me to add this excellent shanty to the shanty sing onboard my traditional gaff cutter tomorrow. Thanks and please keep them coming and if you are ever in Scotland I'll schedule a special shanty sing just to have you with us.
...He was literally in Edinburgh around the time you commented
Like I said before, you are the reason why I love pirates. Sometimes I play Black Flag just to sail around on my ship and nothing else.
That's nice to hear, Slim. Keep sailing.
Renewed interest in shanties is the best thing to come out of 2021, thus far.
Agree.
Oh man! Really makes me nostalgic with the memories of Assassin's Creed 4. Truly Amazing.
I'm glad you like it Pulkit. It's amazing how music can trigger memories like that.
Makes me cry, absolute piece of art, I can't imagine all the moments without your voice singing it, since hearing it you have been a legend to me sir
Thanks Pou.
This shanty changed the whole meaning now in the anticipation of Johnny depp's marriage
Your singing is what sparked my love of shanties. Thank you and well done sir
This is mine and my 10 yo Sons favourite shanty. We loved the new verses Sean and it made my Son laugh as we sang the verses when it said ‘don’t swear’! Love it Sean, thank you for sharing.
Well, we need to make sure the children are educated: know how to sing shanties and do, know how to swear and don't. I'm glad you guys like it. Seán.
I love these shanties so much. Great music.👍
To me this song is perfect when morale is low on your ship because, it imagines a completed voyage and a safe return home.
Yes, that's a great way of looking at it.
Your sea shanties on AC4 have stuck with me for years. I love your voice and the shanties
Brilliant mate. My little daughter loves this Song and smile’s like the sun, when she hears it.
Beautiful. That's so nice to hear. Thanks.
I have been struggling with personal stuff and hearing you sing this shanty makes me smile every time. Thank you Sean.
I'm glad the music helps. I hope you feel better soon.
This man influenced the world more than anyone knows
Could be.
This was the Shanty to start my love for Sea Shanties. It is so awesome to hear the Shantyman from Assassins Creed to do this series- will definitely will be listening to more!
Welcome. New videos every Tuesday. Earlier for patreon folks.
This song has put me through tough times.
I'm pleased to hear that. It's a good song for that.
Man like you is what makes a game or movies a experience youll never forget.... Shanties from black flag and music from witcher 3 is the kind of music that make memorable moments
It's pretty cool how this obscure genre can make these games and movies richer experiences.
I was unemployed and in a really bad spot a couple years ago. I had an old playstation and AC black flag. I would sail the ship around not going anywhere just to listen to the shanties. This was one of my favorites. Thank you
I'm glad to hear that the music could help. I hope you're in a better spot now.
@@SeanDagher better than ever!
My 2 year old son is put to sleep every and every day with your AC Version.. Again and again and don t you dare to try to fool him with another shanty or any other song.. Its either Leave her Johnny by Sean or you have to deal with a 2 year old pirate, tired and nasty.. So I owe you big time Sean... Whole family loves this shanty
That's really nice to hear. I sang these for my kids too, when they were young.
@@SeanDagher... and it always works 😊 TAL32
I came here to see the one that brought color to the otherwise monochromatic voyage
An amazing voice for a perfect song for one long voyage, It's just a true blessing
Thank you for your kind words, Ray.
You are an absolute Saint love your singing thank you for your music!
oh this is the one. i love all your wonderful shanties and this is absolutely my FAVORITE one. thank you so much mr. dagher for all the good memories of hearing your voice. had a wonderful time discovering your music through assassins creed. keep being amazing
Thanks for your kind words, Justin. I'm glad you found your favourite one.
Thank you and greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Well hello Costa Rica! I'm glad the music is finding you there.
It is this very song from this very voice that opened the door for me to the world of shanties and folk. I absolutely adore this rendition as much as ACs and La Nef. Amazing work as usual, have a great week!
Thanks, Kia. It kind of opened the door for me too.
Beautiful shanty. I often wonder what the men were thinking at the end of a long sea voyage. What battles or storms did they weather? What were they hauling? Did they take this ship as a prize after a lengthy skirmish? What beautiful and terrific sea creature did thry spot on those long days, breaching the murky roving tar? What faroff ports did they sail to? What were they like in the 1600s/1700s compared to now? And are the girls they left on those farflung shores more comely than those waiting back home? Haha, oh the joys & struggles of being a young Johnny sailorlad! ⚓⛵🚣🐙🐬🐧
Fun story, me and the local boys always go out in our old volvo amazon on the wekends with a few pallets of beer, and we always play this on the stero, and oh man the feeling when all of the boys sing along in the chorus is just great
Jo, det är roligt att sjunga tillsammans. Shantyer är bästa med en stor stark crew.
Thank you so much for the memories in AC4. Amazing singing!
I cant sing, but im singing along anyway. I love this format. Thank you Sean! A beautiful moment in a very dull day of lockdown.
Yes, sing anyway! I'm glad you like the format. And the music.
One of my favourite shanty , and your interpretations are my favourite, not disappointed whith this one . Great work again ! A salute from the coast of the Mediterranean sea ! Cheers.
Well hello to the Mediterranean too.
Let's just say this is very pertinent. And healing.
I'm glad it it healing for you.
My friends and I sing this for this thing that we do at the very end of the school year. Thank you Sean for a amazing time sailing through the west indies!
I'm very glad to hear that you get together to sing.
One of my favorites.
Yeah, mine too.
😭😭😭 I want to meet you one day. Your music inspired my interest in shanty in my adolescence. Thank you for all your contributions to the shanty enthusiast community.
Well, I hope to be on tour soon and I hope to end up everywhere, including wherever you live.
Oh man, I love this longer version, definitely worth a Spotify upload (yeah I know you just did a shorter one 😂).
Hi PB, I'm glad you like the music. I've put this song on Bandcamp (seandagher.bandcamp.com) and on Amazon music and Deezer, etc.
Man, this and Randy Dandy are spectacular pieces of music, and you do the best versions I've yet heard of them. Love it!
Thanks. I'm glad you like these versions.
Sweetest man alive
shucks
Ναιι
Love its my favourite the funny thing is I was singing it in the morning and just now came on RUclips this came up. This my favourite song I sing this in the pub with my mate Russell I am a coastal folk at heart
I"m glad to hear that you were singing. And singing in the pub. And singing in the pub with Russell!
Amazing, perfect song⛵⛵
Wow, that's high praise. Thanks.
The nostalgia for me is overwhelming. Thanks Sean
You're welcome. I'm glad it takes you back.
Came straight here from the class we just had, having you was very cool and very entertaining, thank you Mr. Dagher :) keep doing your thing.
Hi s n. I'm glad you enjoyed the course. It was nice to meet you all, and I'm glad you like the music.
Thank you very much for making may childhood, i miss being a 15 year old kid with no problem, and all the time in the world. just playing the ac balck flag and singing those song. You are an awesome man who made those days memorable for me. I can't thank you enough ♥️
You are welcome. I'm glad it has been a positive experience for you.
Best Shanty in the world, and I Love that voice!
I have had so many memories of assassins creed black flag amd this song in particular when I found you on tik tok I started crying because al of those wonderful memories started coming back to me thank you god sir ❤
I'm glad you have good memories of it. Welcome here.
The thing with shanties is the first rendition you ever hear is your cannon and whatever version you hear next is "just a version" and there's always something wrong with it.
However, your shanties have actually rewritten the shanties I've known pretty much all my life. Congratulations!
You’re a legend! Thank you for all your work and the gaming memories you gave us.
My pleasure. It really was a fun time.
Your shanty's on Black Flag got me through some times! and your intro brings a smile to my face every single time i listen!! Thank you for your amazing content!!!
Thanks Taze. I'm glad you like the videos. I am especially glad that the music could help you through some times.
Your shanties were the best thing about the AC4 game. This is why I always say music is a very important of movies, games, or any medium. Sometimes I return to old games just to hear certain soundtracks.
Ubisoft did a great thing by including this music in the games. I feel very lucky to have participated.
goosebumps, thank you for your work
You're welcome! Thanks for your support.
I hope your mother watches your videos. That was a lovely thing to say.
When I play shanties for my grandson, I always say, "don't say the bad words!" He especially likes the extra shouts and things in the background so he likes to try to imitate those.
I made sure she watched that one. I'm glad your grandson likes the music, curses and all.
Superb. May your seas be like glass and your sails be full, brother.
Thanks. May your seas be like sails and your glass be full.
@@SeanDagher Hussah!
😎 been a tiring week or so...
SO happy I checked this!!
🤗 Thanks for sharing these 😎😎😎👏👏👏👏👏
Glad to be able to help.
Its my favourite part.! 😍
I love it.!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Mine too.
Been screaming this in my car all week with you! :D
Louder.
astonishing!
I absolutely in love with this shanty, I've heard it like hundred times already. Thank you so much 💓
Awesome. I'm really glad you like it.
You solely made Assassin's Creed: Black Flag more memorable with your singing... Thanks
Not solely. Nils Brown, Michiel Schrey, Clayton Kennedy, Nelson Carter, and others were right there. We all did it together. David Gossage produced the whole thing and made it possible.
This man is the definition of a legend.
Tack, Max. Fint att säga.
@@SeanDagher You even speak Swedish😭
you’re truly amazing, man. so glad i have the opportunity to hear you.
Thanks. I'm glad you do too.
I when I was 18, decided to go to dublin, I love guinness and folk songs and the flogging molly where playing there so it seemed a pretty good start. It was my first trip on my own. It was the first time I went to a country where they speek English. I Just had a bag and my guitar and I stayed one week. The last night before I had to take my plane, I was coming back to my hotel after the show and I decided to go one last night to the pub which was near my hotel. The night was amazing, I talked about music with a violin player and then the pub was closing. I was one of the last people with 4 Americans and 3 old men. They started to sing... It was unbelievable! So I came closer to hear them and after a song one of them asked me to sing something.
And the first thing that came in my mind was leave her johnny...
Of cours they knew it and we all sang together. It was the best night of my trip. Now almost 2 years I started to sing while playing guitar and I made my first album and thought it's blues music, I still LOVE to sing your version of of shanties and leave her Johnny was the first and is by far my favorite!!
So thank you man! Thank you for your great version of this song thank you for making one of the songs that made me dare to sing while I was just a shy teenager. I wouldn't be the same if I hadn't discovered you.
And thank you for keeping those shanties alive.
From a young man from Belgium, your work is amazing and inspiring!
Merci pour l'histoire, Arthur. J'adore entendre ce genre de témoignage. Je suis content que cette musique t'apporte de la joie. Seán.
Another big backflash. This one of my absolute favorite shantys i guess. Goosebumps
I'm glad you like it!
@@SeanDagher mate you have a large part in the glory of the game Black flag. i love the game for itself but i love it more with your voices in teh shantys. Glasses up to you man
One of my favorites! Awesome!
Thanks!
I just woke up I just remembered this out of nowhere great work
It came to you in a dream!
@@SeanDagher it is that good
In an apt way this shanty can be associated with the end of a voyage and depending on the versions the end of the age of sail. A haunting but still enjoyable reminder to love what is for it may not always remain.
Good point, H. Leaving the ship, and all the ships, for good.
I have been singing and listening sea shanties for some years now and i find it wonderful that i can always find shanties (or in this case only verses) that i haven't already heard and i can enjoy this songs again and again.
Love your voice and your channel!!!
Keep this series going
Thanks Ferran! I'm glad you like it. And I'm glad that you are still finding new tunes.
Sean this gives me goosebumps every time you have just a great voice
Tiene usted una voz increíble.
¡Bravo!
It takes me back to my time in the Navy. While we didn't have sails of course, there is something "eternal" about being at sea. You rekindle that feeling in grand style. Now excuse me, I need to find a rag, my eyes seem a bit misty..
It's amazing what emotions music can evoke.
All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart
This really bring back old beautiful memories
I sang this when rowing this weekend, such a beautiful song.
Awesome. I love to hear about people sing these.
I think my day is getting better!!
Awesome!
Thank you for singing this iconic song!
One of my favourites.
Brilliant! Loving this series so much, thanks Sean!! 😁👍
My pleasure, Phil.
A real artiste sir amazing voice
Love the songs, your voice is great! Thank you for making music for us
Thanks, Life. I'm glad you like it.
