A little backstory on this shanty; the "her" in this song is not a woman. It's the ship. This was traditionally the last shanty sung on a voyage after the ship had already moored in port and the crew were doing their last rounds on the bilge pumps preparing to disembark.
This makes sense. There was a meme about pirates that they call every inanimate object that developed personal connection to as "her" specially ships.
I figured it out myself somewhere during third hearing :P
Add to the fact that singing this shanty before the end could be considered mutiny, well.... yeah.
And Her Majesty's Royal Navy still sings this whenever a ship is decommissioned
Ngl not to me mean but u thought this was obvious
They're in the process of doing one for Wellerman at the peak of the craze, they had thousand of submissions look out for that one!
Also, the Longest Johns are a sea shanty channel that have been uploading for years!
They said they got 6340 people on there, it's gonna be absolutely insane!
Next Friday can't wait
They just launched it! I can't wait to see a video on that one, too!,
Just came from watching that and dang it was impressive
Hey that's me at 1:25!!!! I was one of the people doing BSL (British Sign Language) haha its so weird, in a good way, seeing my face and so many of my friends!
I appreciated this massively :)
So, as someone who doesn't know any SL, but wants to learn, what's the main difference between ASL(American) and BSL(British)?
@@Megidramon maybe it’s a bit late for your question but asl and bsl are completely different languages, like the difference from French to Chinese. They were developed completely separate of each other. Asl also uses one hand while bsl uses two hands for signing
@@SomeoneTookMyOldName I agree they are 2 completely different languages, but ASL uses both hands to sign as well.... Why do you think ASL only uses one hand?
ANother reason of why i'd say, right now, sea shanties are so popular, is because of the hard time we're going through.
Sea shanties are "work songs" that were sung by hard working men, during time of miseries sometime too, to keep the moral up. The fact that these songs are accessible for everybody to sing, just create this feeling of union, of being connected with the other singers or participants. People need to assemble right now, need to feel connected to their fellow human relatives as a lot of us are stuck home. I think it might be one of the reason it is so popular right now. (Sorry for my bad english, it ain't my first language)
That explanation is pretty perfect yeah. We all feel the struggle of the last year from being stuck in one spot for what feels like an eternity. These songs speak to a rough time where a joyous time can be ahead when you get your pay and are finally on shore again. This, along with A Health to the Company make a ton of sense being popular right now
The rum definitely helps though
The field songs, and gospel singing is the same way. Tough times, but we shall survive and overcome.
I came here to say this but you already put it perfectly.
Your English writing is good. I only noticed a few misspells, and a few errors in punctuation.. but that can be expected to happen to anyone.
You did well..
I think part of the popularity of these sea shanties/working songs is partly they were sung during hard times for comraddery and support. They sung of better times coming as we trudged through the bad, and with times what they are the communal chants and positive aspect of the songs are inviting.
I like your idea behind the resurgence of sea shanties. I have a slightly different idea of why it is, and it comes from experience being out to sea for long periods of time. While on the ship you are, despite being with however many other people are in your crew, very isolated. The feeling of being on a ship at sea is similar to feeling of having to be away from friends and family for long periods of time in the current Covid-centric world. The simple melody, the call and response type of song also really adds to the feel of community and togetherness. Sea shanties, and working songs, have always been used to bring people together for a common goal. So building that in to this world where we are so isolated and where there isn't an end in sight, whether of the quarantine or of the time on the ship.
Please check out more of TLJ!
Oak & Ash & Thorn
Here's A Health To The Company
Got No Beard
Four Hours
Hoist Up The Thing
The Parting Glass
Randy Dandy-O
all are good choices :)
Fire and flames too
Did they do parting glass? I don’t remember hearing that from them, awesome though!
Santiana too!
Cruel Wars too
Haven't heard Parting Glass yet
The lead singer, if I recall correctly, is the bassist usually, but he takes the lead for any rendition of Leave Her Johnny they do.
JD's got incredible range. He's usually the bass but can stand in and take over for all of them.
@@Traveltheworld87 an excellent voice! Not just range but projection and vocal presence.
I think it's absolutely beautiful that some of their submitters sang with sign language *wipes tears from her eye as she has a cousin who is deaf*
*bonks Rynn*
I've loved sea shanties ever since I sang some as part of a high school acapella group. I'm 44 now. I think the appeal is because they're accessible. You don't have to have a grand operatic singing voice to take part, just a desire to sing and be able to follow along to a simple tune. I think the resurgence right now is because of Covid lockdowns happening all over the world. So many people with not a lot to do, no socialising, commuting, activities etc. which means they have had to turn to something else to fill the time. Not a lot of the population have access to musical instruments either, so something that does well with no accompaniment is perfect... which is exactly what sea shanties were designed for. I think also the mental health aspect of taking part in a project that works with other people in this way (and yet, still stays socially distant) provides a mental boost.
Have you heard The Longest Johns "Got No Beard?" So much fun!
As is Moby Duck and Chicken on a raft
Over 6000 plus entries for Wellerman community video. Watch out for this soon.😁
Oh yes, I definitely can’t wait for that!
@@circuit_4442 I'm gonna be a pixel on it, but I'm still excited for the premiere...
I would definitely love to see you check out more of The Longest Johns' work. Another beautiful one would be Here's A Health To The Company, or Oak & Ash & Thorn
"Ashes" is also an amazing song
ohhhh yes those two are my FAVOURITES i want to do ballet to them
and of course Hard Times Come Again No More..this song will be played at my funeral! Love it.
Hello, have you heard about Annapantsu or adriasaurus? Anna has made a lot of covers for musicals, games, cartoons etc. and has a gorgeous voice. Her most popular video is her cover for "Hellfire" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She has also made collabs with Caleb Hyles. Adriasaurus also has a beautiful voice and I love her lullabies.
Wonder why you didn't called her Pantsu
My husband and I participate in Pirate Festivals. Hundreds of people dressed as pirates. Capt'n Tor & The Naer Do Well Cads are a pirate outfit and band out of Brockville Ontario. You should check out their song The Hangman's Jig.
I got chills. Because every human seems to be able to join no matter what ethnicity, hair color, sexuality or whatever - all people together. And I love Tha they were people who used sign language as well! ❤️
Yes I've been following The Longest Johns ever since all they had was a video of them singing in the kitchen. You should definitely check out some of their songs. Lovely harmonies
I would love to see you do a video reacting to Bones in the Ocean by The Longest Johns. It's a beautiful song and I feel it would be interesting to see what you think of it.
I think the love of sea shanties come from the nice idea of being sat round a fire with the people you care most about having a good time and drinking
my guess is they all were given a track to harmonies to, this is why they all have some form of earbuds or headset in. I have heard that peter Hollens did that for some of his mass choir videos. you should check out his greatest showman cover for a massive group song.
I've participated in the TLJ Wellerman Community Video. They uploaded a track with the melody, and then a track each for the tenor, baritone and bass harmonies and they really encouraged everyone to find the one we're most comfortable with.
Finally! A Trend I actually LIKE!!!
I sang shanties before it was cool 😎
Speaking of shanties. You should definitely get some Stan Rogers on here. My love affair with shanties started with Barrett's Privateers (a cover of it actually) a long time ago 😊
wasn't the version from "Mountie on The Bounty" was it?
My theory on why people love sea shanties, and especially why they took off so hard and so fast in 2020, is because sea shanties were sung by the sailors to ward off the loneliness that comes with being a sailor and to show the comradery that they all have with each other. 2020 was a very hard, dangerous year for everyone, so sea shanties, just like in the days of the original shanties, were a way to show that even though we all have it hard, nobody is alone in these trying times. I think subconsciously, we all needed sea shanties in our lives
I love how you can smell the sweat with your ears. Sea shanties just sound like stuff getting done.
When you get a chance you should definitely check out Jonathan Young's cover of this song.
rum is always a solution, respectively, ofcourse, wink wink nudge nudge
Sea Shanties are not copyright protected they’re public domain makes them easy to use without worrying about DMCA
If you like shanties you should listen to "The Fisherman's Friends" There was a feature film made about them. They have had minor hit records too.
Right on! FFs are great as well, and the movie is delightful! On Netflix.
Why Shanties? Because they were sung to help people deal with harsh life with a little bit of art and passion. Why do workers' hymns exist? Same reason. Pass the time, sing a song, join in with fellow people who are in the same boat.
Part of the obsession of sea chanties is all the Rennies missing the Renaissance Faires that haven't been happening the last year.
I think you would enjoy Home Free’s new Sea Shanty medley!
I could listen to this day in and day out! It gives me such an up lifting Feeling.
I have so many ideas for songs to react to.
I would like to see you react to songs from Clamavi de Profundis. A Family doing Lord of the Rings Covers and original songs. Their biblical songs are also very nice to listen to.
I couldnt decided which Song to recommend though ;)
Maybe lament for Boromir . I guess just pick your favorite ;)
Another fine band would be Fiddlers Green. A german speed folk band. Really fast and really great ;)
P Stands for Paddy, old duncow, Born to be a Rover.
But i do not now much about music. So i am not the most suitable to pick songs ;)
I love the arrangements that the editor and the different people have come up with
This reaction warmed the cockles of my heart!
These Sea Shanties are so feel-good. I might have to take vocal lessons just b/c you're such a riot Ken!
In 8 days the wellerman community project premiers, over 6000 voices.
Edit: I firmly believe the 5 dislikes are for your bad pun.
Song may be about leaving a bad captain & ship to work on a better. There is a line about no grog, which (if I remember correctly) was one of the few ways of getting vitamin C for sailors
And here sits a wannabe bass scrounging around searching for that link regarding chest voice...
I don't really care why sea shanties are popular. I'm a k-12 music teacher and it makes my kids excited to sing! In a recent students' choice day, my 4th graders requested to listen to sea shanties! The only problem is finding sea shanties that are 4th grade appropriate...
Randy dandy o would be a good one, the longest johns have several amazing recordings
Love your channel, it seems very friendly and approachable
Still reminds me of ac black flag
Longest Johns last week uploaded all the black flag shanties. They also Game and did a playthrough
What is so lovely is how much the people who sang for this video, LOVE this song....and probably other sea chanties. It's very sweet.
I wonder if these “lower register” tones stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system?
Do you know the rockin'1000 ?
If not, check it out. It`s absolutely amazing.
I don`t know what it is, but there`s just something about people coming together and making music together that let`s me believe there will be a better world someday.
His eyes and his smile just look so sincere and he looks like a coach that trained these guys and girls to achieve this amazing video and was just proud but he actually never trained them lol
Next Friday they are going to releasing the wellerman 6340 people community project
Then you should watch Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choirs!!! The last one has 15,000!!
I have a Clam Chowder recording from around 1980 that features this tune, in eclectic album that runs the gamut from "Have Some Madeira, M'dear" to "Wallops Island". And I agree with you completely about the compelling simple harmonies -- all those tonics and dominants and open fourths and fifths. Overtones are musical endorphins.
I believe the love affair with the shanties, is the histories, cameraderie, the bravery, and fear... you are your own country with countrymen on the unknown and perilous voyage, and who knows, who knows, time to go down to ol' Maui. But on that ship, livelihood and you are a floating bunch of neighbours. And quite honestly, the chants, help hoist the sails, get the work done, like in the fields of water fore'er before you. Work together or die, fight together die together, bones in the ocean is one of my faves..... also there is an opportunity to sing about what you miss, what you dream, what life can be, and what losing that means. Like Odysseus hearing the songs of the sirens, the siren call is within us all.
And damn right, song and music is our souls crying and laughing trying, succeeding, and sometimes failure, but learning all the way boy. ALL THE WAY BOY!
Come to think that 20 years from now people will look on this and wonder what the heck caused all this, keep in mind many of us were stuck at home, scared and confused by a virus that killed so many folks (I lost my dad during the pandemic to cancer, Covid only hastened this and we couldn’t go see him in the VA) I’m writing this for future context so folks looking back can understand many people came together in any way they could to lift spirits.
There's always something beautifull when full grown man signs togheter.
Dunno why.
So many other RUclips talents spotted in the videos. So great seeing many of those talents lending their voices and talents to this project.
Looking forward to me pale RUclipsrs further content! Subscribes, of course.
Can you do Stan Walkers cover of Ultralight Beam?
1920: in the future we will have flying cats
The future: thousands of people singing sea shanties
So I've tried singing some shanties at the gym and in my xbox party and nobody knew the songs. I even tried singing more familiar songs like this one and wellerman. You can imagine the disappointment. lol
No you’re 100% right. It was awful to be at sea. But what else were you going to do once you agreed to it. Or press ganged.
Be a pirate if you’re lucky
As a sailor (at least formerly) I can tell you that it's difficult to leave your woman and go to sea. Then it's difficult to leave your ship for the last time when it gets back to port. One finds oneself with out a ship and without a woman.
I cannot leave her. She's intertwined through my very sprit. for My heart knows no other. There's no life without her.
That's what the call of the sea can do.
Have you ever done a video on Eric Whitacre's virtual choir? They're worth a browse, if not.
Shanties were work songs. Basic call and response meant to coordinate a job aboard ship. So it’s not surprising that a genre of music meant to encourage unity camaraderie would become popular during a rough period in history.
As a woman I enjoy shanty a lot and I like to sing along but with my hardly existent scale I struggle with it because if I go high it gets to high at places et vice versa. This song is kinda manageable to me, but yeah, I get the impression shanty really was made for men.
You should check out their wellerman community project
Will you do a reactiong video to the other Mass Chois Video of the The Longest Johns with as title says 6500 singers?
They made a new mass choir project for The Wellerman with several thousand people!! It was really fun!
You should definitely check out the Wellerman project when it releases! Even more people are taking part in that!
It's about a crew who has to leave their ship and their family to move on because the ship can't sail and they remenice idk how to spell it but they look back at good memories
I gave you 1knd like , so do Savatage - Hall of The Mountain King !
What someone was listening to this and they’re name was Johnny and then they’re girlfriend walks in
I know I'm terribly late to comment but better late than never, i believe the love affair with sea shanties started as a trend on TikTok, don't quote me on this but i also think they started to trend because the shanty, The Wellerman became an Internet sensation
Heres hoping they do a project for "bones in the ocean." :'(
Takes me back to Assassin's Creed; Black Flag
oh this is awesome, I was luckily a part of this video
Being a sailor is not for those who want eight hours of sleep at one time. If the watch is divided in port and starboard it's not going to happen.
You need to listen to loads more Longest Johns, one good one could be Auld Triangle
'Call and Response" songs are a unifying thing.
The song was around in the 1700's I think.
Could you react to Oblivion or Hallowed or any other Song by Stratovarius?
Wow! I just realized that this Video has 0 Dislikes! Impressive!
Kiss of death... There's always one to knock you down ^^^ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯😉
You should check out Sean Daghers Shanty of The Week series on RUclips. He’s one of the musicians who sang on Assassins Creed Black Flag
Sean Dagher just recorded Lowlands Low with The Longest Johns as well
Home free is about to drop a sea shanty medley!
This song is in assassin's creed black flag
Many of those 3.5m views will be multiple listens of those who have discovered this amazing video. Ive listened to it loads and sung along in the car too. Cant wait for their Wellerman video, they are a great group and ive listened to loads of their stuff since discovering their channel 😘
"Why the love affiar of sea shanties?" Well I love them because I'm half Irish but I think it's because it's such a group song that everyone can join in and makes everyone feel good giving the feeling of brotherhood with your mates. It's a way different vibe than just singing your favorite song on the radio it's the same thing with military cadences.
I would like to know your opinion about the cover of "The Summit" of Avi Kaplan, made by Peter Barber and Bobby Waters. Your reacts light up my days :) And I've seen suggestions of "The Little Mermaid Medley" by Voice Play und Rachel Potter. If you love some awesome ranges again, check this out :)
Hi @Ken Lavigne,
if you liked this, you have to listen to their version of "The Wellerman". I only say: 6500 singers!
The love of sea shanties comes from the hardtimes of late. I think collectively as a society it just harkens back to the tough times of old. Been a brutal 2 years since COVID became and sea shaties leave us a small inkling of hope as well give us a little drop of steadfastness.
Loved this!
Longest Johns are a great, fun, sea shanty band. Would recommend checking out some of their live stuff, as well as there videos playing the game SEA OF THIEVES... they basically sail around singing at other players😂
I love these many voiced compilations.... love them, brings folks together in beautiful manner.
Assassin's Creed?
I would highly recommend reacting to Home Free's Sea Shanty Medley! It is, unsurprisingly, phenomenal musically and just a lot of fun. I think you'd really enjoy it. Love your videos man!
If u like this kind of unison and ppl coming together vibe u should look up
Estonian Song Festival "Laulupidu".
Maybe someone is interested: it is Also known as the singing revolution.
Singing for estonians is like eating/sleeping. They would not be the same without it.
In my opinion and why I could listen to shanty's all day....I'm just a fan of history and very much so the Privateer era and these songs tell stories, while being created at the time as a way to pass the long hours or make the work go faster. Imagine being out in the middle of the ocean for months and the winds have not blown for days. I can imagine cabin fever being a real thing, so this being a way to quell that, maybe. You don't get many today that carry on this sort of storytelling. Like an oral tradition. Sometimes music is best made without the instruments, but it would be interesting to hear a hurdy gurdy played along with this.
5:48 no comment about the cat?
Dear Ken, I stumbled upon your reviews when listening to all kind of Wellerman songs. So I watched you watching all kind of music. And it is a joy to watch you, as you are not mainly talking about your expertise but your way of appreciating joy in music, appreciating other people's talent. Subscribed 😊
You should react to “Heaven on their Minds” or “gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar (by Tim Minchin and Ben Forester respectively)! These are two of my recent favorite MT pieces and I love the emotion that both pieces provide!
Check out Home Free's new Sea Shanty mashup - totally their tongue-in-cheek take on the Nathan Evans / TikTok / Wellerman craze and quite excellent!
Aye me laddie, I be a pirate me self. Sea shanties be amongst my favorite music. Of course I've listened to thee music long before yee accrusidd Tic-tok bull shit. Bones in the Ocean be one of my favorite shanties.
I also injoy the shanties:
Grey funnel line
Bonney ship the diamond
And Four Hours
The Longest johns be my favorite Shanty group. A bunch of true lads singin true Shanties
3:55 i think the sea shanties are so catchy in lyrics and melodies
I think another big factor is that, since most shanties are made around harmonies, you don’t have to be a fantastic singer; just good enough to join in and roughly match everyone else.
I've loved shanties ever since I first came into contact with them. Imo, this type of song became so popular expecially during the quarantine, because it gave people the feeling to be doing something together, although they didn't come together physically.
We all have struggled with isolation to varying degrees, I think, and to be able to finally do something together with others, even though not in person, is something that helped many people through this time.
Also check Pressgang Mutiny from Toronto.
