    And Geoff has the nerve to call himself a Baritone with a Bass Range. “Not a true bass”

    • @leechowning2712
      @leechowning2712 3 года назад +331

      With 5 octaves range, counting his subvocals, he honestly can call himself anything he wants. He shifts 2 full octaves in that one line... And I was laughing when he said "need to turn this up" and all I could think of the E1 in the end.

    • @user-bx8sj6qm3w
      @user-bx8sj6qm3w 3 года назад +70

      When it comes to voice classification, it's not only the range that counts, but the tone and the prime voice and the comfortable range of a singer etc. So in his case he's a baritone with a bass range. I'm a contralto with a tenor range, Diamanda Galas is a soprano sfogato, meaning she is a contralto or mezzosoprano with a soprano range. Ivan Rebroff is a bass with a bass to soprano range. So yeah it's about the tone before the range.

    • @jdkilpatrick2000
      @jdkilpatrick2000 3 года назад +7

      @@user-bx8sj6qm3w LOL. First of all, I love your username. 😂
      Secondly, I kinda relate to your comment. I was classified by one vocal coach as a soprano, and always sang the top soprano line in choir. But another vocal coach classified me as a mezzo soprano (and I immediately felt like a failure 🤦‍♀️…like I just wasn’t “good enough” be a real soprano). I have a fairly respectable range, especially if you’re talking about a mixed head/chest voice. As a female, I can sing a decent amount of baritone parts, and can sing about any soprano part…unless you’re talking about insane “only dogs can hear it” whistle tones, and I just was never trained in that. 🤷‍♀️ (Could probably figure it out and do it if I tried.) But those extreme parts aren’t necessarily super-comfortable, and aren’t something I could sing over and over again without damaging my vocal cords. I feel like I’m in that strange land between mezzo soprano and soprano. I can technically match a very large range of pitches, but I don’t have the same amount of depth/richness that mezzo sopranos do in their lower ranges, and Idon’t have the same strength as true sopranos in their upper ranges.
      All of that said, I still can’t understand how Geoff says he’s really a baritone vs. bass. His natural speaking voice is sooooo deep. Sounds like pure bass to me. 🤷‍♀️ But the man’s range is close to the max range of any human that’s ever existed. 😂 Bottom note of the piano? No big deal. Top note of the piano? No big deal. 😂 (Slight exaggeration, but not by much.)

    Loved your analysis 👍😎
    Voice Play‘s Queen in 5 minutes is one of my personal favorites! Also they have a new medley of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid “ with Rachel Potter that is excellent!
    In the a cappella world - Home Free has a country vibe, Voice Play has a theatrical vibe, and Pentatonix has a popular/modern vibe. All three are excellent a cappella groups with distinctly different styles!

    • @jeffc8965
      @jeffc8965 3 года назад +6

      I second the request for 'Queen in 5 minutes'. Also, any of the songs they sang with Rachel Potter were great. But, even though the 'Little Mermaid' medley is newer I still prefer the 'Moana Medley'. "Just Sing' is another great one that doesn't get enough attention. Since it's a collaboration with many singers it's not a great chance to hear the guys in Voiceplay, but it is a wonderful chance to hear about 2 dozen great singers.

      @Carole B., that is an excellent summary. I showed Home Free to my mom yesterday and said they have a country vibe, but I hadn't thought to summarize the other two as you did. That was brilliantly put.

I see from the comments below others have provided you with a great selection of VP & Geoff solo songs to check out. Please do, you won't be disappointed. Just as a note, Layne and/or Geoff do the majority of the arrangements for VP's songs & Eli (tenor 2) does a lot of the lighting in the videos. The group is pretty much their own production crew. Santa in this video was played by Geoff's brother-in-law (wife's brother).

    Geoff is an anomaly. I've seen some of his solo videos and swore he was using Voice Play to create the vocal range, but clearly that's not the case. Most basses can't do what he does.
    The only person I've ever heard who could match that low note was Ted Cassidy (Lurch from the Addams Family). He was a giant of a man, and that voice was real. I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing him in person once.
    If you want to hear more of Geoff's range, check out his solo videos. They're entertaining and just freakin' awesome.

    (I subscribed) You’re right that Geoff is incredible when he hits that deep (growl) note; and when you were mentioning the times Geoff fills out the deep ends of the arrangement itself in tandem with the others ( especially Laine) if you have a look at there other videos like their top 10 list videos you’ll see that Geoff is mostly helping Laine ‘flesh out’ the backing arrangement. Also I highly recommend watching their ‘Daddy Sang Bass’ video. It is my all time fave, as well as their ‘Road Trip’ stage concert/performance.

    I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! I was disappointed that you didn't go back "far enough"--and then you did it, at the very end. So I'm happy now. It's amazing when Geoff sings in four different octaves for those 3 final renditions of "I'm the Oogie Boogie man." I'm sure he and Layne worked together very carefully to pitch that arrangement in the right key so he could pull it off so beautifully.

    The mouth light is used a lot by Till Lindemann in Rammstein when they play live. Also, Geoff's lowest note in this song is an Eb1 in the short bass run right after "To add a little spice", but the last drawn out E1 usually gets people more

    • @adambaldoni5491
      @adambaldoni5491 3 года назад

      That little run is heavily edited. It's given an octave effect in post which means that Geoff sang the run from C#3 to C#2 but it sounds like C#2 to C#1 with the effect added. The subharmonic E1 is the lowest note that Geoff sings in this song.

    • @AlexusDelphi

    Subscribed (previously), and liked (this vid).
    During this quarantine, Geoff is releasing some multitracked solo vids where he sings 4 or 5 part harmony with himself. A couple months ago, he released "Bare Necessities" from Jungle Book. And a week or two ago, he released Paul McCartney's "Blackbird"... he hits an E1 near the end of that, too.
    And he has vids where he reads the writings of Edgar Allen Poe.
    As for Voiceplay as a whole...
    Earl Elkins has left the group, so their newly-released stuff has either sometime guest Rachel Potter (ex: "Little Mermaid medley") or a male guest from another group in that spot.
    Their older stuff: You could check "Daddy Sang Bass." It'll be what you think it is. Or "Can't Help Falling in Love," which showcases all the members in turn.
