    He said all of this was in full voice; no subharmonics.

      I could clearly hear a subharmonic on the last, low bass note. I checked it with a spectrum analyzer and could clearly see the primary was at 80Hz and the sub was at 40Hz (E1).

      @@johndeeregreen4592 the last note isn't even an E1, it's a G#1 so I think you made a mistake somewhere.

      @@lapislazuli2896, it's hard to get a clean spectrum on him. His timbre and harmonics are so rich, he throws spikes all over the place... this is why he sounds so damn good, though.

    Not sure if you were aware but this entire song he sang it in chest voice. No subharmonics!

      I think the higher parts may have been head voice, not chest voice. Just saying’. 😉

      @@crunchycrackers7364, “full-voiced” just means he didn’t use special techniques like subharmonics. Head voice is just a higher range but still full voice.

    Yay! I've been hoping you'd react to Geoff's work again! Would you consider reacting to his cover of High and Dry? If you want to really be impressed by his range, that's the one to listen to.
    Great reaction! I agree with you that Sixteen Tons is perfect, but Geoff says one of the background singers makes a mistake near the end. I've never been able to catch it, but I'll take his word for it. 🙂

      I just saw it. It is the one to the lead Geoff's right, he goes to tap the shovel when he wasn't supposed to. It's toward the end.

    My tuner hit a low of G1 a couple of times! Impressive control, definitely one of the more melodious low bass singers.

    What's funny is you mention tricks to sing lower. Geoff himself actually has a video talking about a few techniques people use to sing low. A good example is Vocal frying. He explained it as similar to the same feeling of clearing your throat because it uses the same muscle groups. I had actually been doing it for years but never knew what it was called until I saw his video. I was like "I literally taught myself how to rumble my voice like that to try and make the grudge noise. I didn't think it was a singing technique." XD

    : ) You know, Avi Kaplan did a song with Peter Hollens! “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”, oooohooolllybass. I took a peruse back through your videos again and it really is a shame you didn’t vibe with Hozier, I totally understood what you were saying, but hoooollly cow his voice is usually so beautiful! Maybe check out his cover of Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know” or something from his Together At Home contributions for Global Citizen.

    Just out of curiosity, I googled "original key of 16 tons" and got an answer of E minor.

      And this is in B minor! So a forth lower...I think?
      Edit: that’s before the key change at 4:30 which transposes it to C# minor

    I'm old enough to remember the Ol' Pea Picker Tennessee Ernie Ford and have an old double album of his called "Yesterday and Today". Thanks for sharing this version of one of his greatest songs. Now I have to go put the old record on and give it a listen.

    We love Tim and Geoff but I think you should react to "Black is the color of my true love's hair" Avi really has a smooth and round sound even in the lowest register, its worth a watch. Nice reaction as always btw

    The original was by Merle Travis in 1947 but it was a huge hit for Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1955. My late mother had both versions in her record library. This one is closer to Ford's version, but it pulls in something from Johnny Cash's version. "Low Bass Cover" indeed.

      until you get mouth cancer and you have to get your larynx removed and you can't sing at all anymore. Some better advice if you really must are to eat a more testosterone rich diet or to have your voice surgically altered or get implants/fatty injections to bulk up your chords.

    when i was younger, i had a very impressive range, with my lowest note at a high baritone/low tenor range and at the highest I sang Defying Gravity. I've always had this thing where when i get a cold, instead of really /losing/ range, it just... shifted. Down. Sometimes a couple notes, sometimes a whole half-octave, and once it shifted so low, I managed to match a Johnny Cash song. It has never happened again and I yearn for those days.

    I love Ernie Ford's version but Geoff has done a fabulous job with his version. He has certainly made it his own.

    3 days of rehearsing with this song, and given i can hit all of his notes disregarding the subharmonics before i even learned how to do subharmonics i got a fairly good understanding of them now, and if anyone wants to learn how to get into subharmonics its a fun thing to do

    I'd love to see your thoughts on Skindred. They're a ragga/nu-metal band from Wales, and their style flows between the two genres, and sometimes add some extra elements too. Kill The Power especially has juuuuust a hint of old skool hip hop mixed in. Check them out!

    You should totally react to Tomi Pizur's cover of "Hellfire" from Hunchback of Notre Dame. He uses 6 octaves in that cover and it blows me away each time

    The reaction of a bass singer to this video mentioned that he thought it was a touch "over-darkened" and he speculated that it was caused by who Geoff has as his own favorites.
    But honestly it's as close to perfect as it can get really.

    Great reaction thank you. I think Mr. Ford would definitely have approved. Mr. Ford's song was controversial back in the day. He was singing about the plight of many coal workers back in the 1950's that made many Americans feel more than a little uncomfortable. I am a new subscriber as of today. Have you ever heard of the Harp Twins. They have quite a performance library. Check out their song called The Daemon Lover. It is wonderful.

    Having a lengthy untreated thyroid infection apparently also helps with lengthening those vocal chords, from mezzo to contralto in my case ;)

    I once met a Ukrainian construction worker. He lit one cigarette from another, drunk vodka and his voice was Geoff at his lows all the time. All Ukrainians seem to be good at lower tones.
