good day *nickhiggsthesinger* theres a few things i wanted to point out about voiceplay: firstly theres usually 5 members in symphonics group of acapella, sometimes 6 with added guest female vocalist(s),male guest vocalist as well as a combination of mutiple guest vocalist throughout their long stand careers. earl isnt with them currently. earl is the one with pretty voice and its super sweet. but earl can do vocal sounds,as well as singing his lower and upper ranges. he can sing in alto, soprano, and tenor musicial accompaniments. jnnone has the very soothing tenor, soprano ranges but hes normally singing his deep accents from french, jamaician and english tones respectively. btws they all have their own youtube channels as well. layne is the one with "animated preccussion sounds" but he sing while holding his own in the transitional sections. layne always playing with geoff's hair.. either by "rubbiing the top of head roughing it up" or by using one or two fingers from the side of geoff"s face removing a strand of hair out of way..and yes lol they do make eye contant in doing so(usually geoff and layne are the ones either sitting side by side or from top and bottom sitting arrangments. and the geoff.. well hes geoff lol. you either love em por hate em. however hes such a bad ass lol..
i have a few song suggestions and groups of acapella you like to listen and/or have reactions to:
*voiceplay* song "wicked," moana, "into the unknown," and "your are a mean one mr. grinch"
*Voctave*song called "90s cartoon disney medley" and "where are you christmas?" its one of their favorite songs
*pattycakeproduction musical* songs; bump in the night, villains mansion, love finds a way, the villains lair.

VoicePlay are one of the three big names in a capella right now. They stand out and are unique for their theatrical approach to many of their videos. Geoff, as you know, is the bass, often being a bass guitar. for the group. He arranges roughly half of their videos ,the other half being done by Layne Stein, the beatboxer/vocal percussion. The line up in this one is not what you see now, as two members have since left. The tenor with the beard, Earl Elkins Jnr (he did the cackle) left in 2020 for personal reasons. J.None, the black baritone left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy music section. The remaining tenor, (short and bald) is Eli (say it as ellie) Jaconbson. Ex rock singer and voice over artist, he is a master of riffs and runs. He did the voice of Santa in this. If you want to that from this line up you need to hear their cover of Tennessee Whisky, which is the video I first saw from them. I've never looked back. Others? Hoist The Colours; The Dragonborn Comes, Can't Help Falling in Love, ...too many to mention. :)

He's basically part time for them.... if he can get off the time to record and shoot for them, he's featured. You will find his silky baritone and wide range of talents a trip I'm sure!

My suggestion for a reaction is a bit out of the box from those I have seen thus far. I would suggest that you tackle their Wicked Medley. It's a bit unusual for VoicePlay, in that they have not one feature artist but two. Both are artists they have worked with, extensively, in the past, and both are phenomenal singers in their own rite. That one is a Geoff arrangement, and one he worked on for quite some time before he found the voices he thought could do the performances justice. He was not wrong.

Almost all the arrangements are done by Layne (beatboxer) or Geoff, but Eli (bald tenor) has been doing more lately. Some completely different vibes for them and fantastic arrangements they have done lately include their incredible versions of 'Nothing Else Matters', a Geoff arrangement, 'Creep' an Eli arrangement and 'In the Air Tonight', a Layne arrangement. Nothing Else Matters and In the Air also include J None as their 'featured performer', he played one of the minions here and left about two years ago to join the US Navy, but has been coming back more and more lately to feature with them. (You saw him in "Hellfire' also, although he didn't get that much of a chance to shine in that one). A lot of people will call Geoff the 'gateway drug' into VoicePlay, that fantastically low yet smooth deep bass he can hit, plus his very wide range are hard to ignore. But once you start listening to them, you start to appreciate the other members as well: Eli's fantastic rock tenor a lot of times makes him overtake Geoff as the 'fan favorite' (yet to classify him simply as a tenor is unfair, he is fully capable of covering a bass line when needed), Layne's sweet baritone is always a joy to hear (he started as a singer and only took over beatboxing when the original percussionist left), and Cesar, who brings such a wide range of vocal styles, from sassy to heart-breaking tugs on your heart, is a bari/tenor, fully capable of matching Eli's superhigh notes when needed. I never felt the slightest urge to join anyone's Patreon, I am very happily a Patron for Geoff, VoicePlay and PattyCake Productions (run by Layne and former VP member Tony Wakim).

I believe all of VPs Halloween songs were arranged by Layne (beatbox). In general, they split the arrangements pretty much 50/50, but Layne usually does Halloween and Geoff usually does Christmas. Layne often pushes Geoff into those high highs falling to a low-low; Geoff rarely arranges that for himself.

Geoff and Layne have known each other since middle school, sang in high school chorus together and have been singing together professionally since 1997. They rebranded as Voiceplay in 2012. Most arrangements are done by either Geoff or Layne, swapping turns month to month. Whoever arranges usually has the whole project from beginning to end.
No label, no manager, completely independent. That allows them complete artistic control and it shows. It also means they don't get ther recognition that other groups do. They toured extensively pre-Covid, but have settled in as mostly recording artists. They have done a few private corporate gigs in the last couple of years. Their version of We Don't Talk About Bruno was so good, that Disney hired them to perform it at a huge private event.
In November they will appear in concert with Chicago in Atlantic City NJ
    Try Bruno, it's great!

Layne is co-owner of Pattycake Productions (where most of the videos are shot) with former member Tony Wakim (who prefers behind the camera to in front of it)

I have had a look though the comments so far and there are a lot of wonderful suggestions there already. So I will just skip those and move on to some other that I think you would like. To start off head over to Geoff's channel and have a look at his rendition of "Monster Mash" such a fun song. Also if you haven't yet checked out The Bass Gang then you might want to. They have done a lot of good songs. All their videos have had to make use of green screen work as the 4 members met during lock-down and formed the group. Only their most recent 4 videos did 3 of them get to meet in person for the first time. I would recommend watching those in order starting with "Arabian Nights' From Disney's Aladin, "Be Prepared" from the Lion King, "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast, and finally they did "Friend Like Me" again from Aladin.

VoicePlay are the theater kids. Home Free are the country boys and PTX are the popular kids. The Bass Gang isn't part of the Acapella Golden Trifecta but they're running a close 4th followed by Voctave.
I love VoicePlay's covers of Queen In 5 Minutes, Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas and Dream On by Aerosmith. Their Little Mermaid medley is great too.

After you finish their Halloween catalogue (and please do include Hall of the Mountain King, which made my jaw drop and my cheeks hurt from laughing) do pop over to Geoff’s channel for his God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I think you’ll really enjoy his take. Like so many here have already said, between VoicePlay and Geoff, you can point and click, there are no bad choices. Discovered you a week or so ago, subscribed right away. Your analyses are great!

Good headphones are essential to listening to any a cappella music, but especially VoicePlay since Geoff does so much subharmonic stuff and they love to play with the spatial landscape as well. They will often bounce the sound between the left and right ears.

Well, you asked for Voiceplay suggestions, so here they are 😅.
Metallica's "Nothing else matters" could be a nice start, as well as "True colors", "Tennessee whisky", "Can't help falling in love", "Superstition", the post-apocalyptic trilogy Imagine Dragons' "Warriors", Aerosmith's "Dream on" and The White Stripes' "7 Nation Army", their Vikings' stuff ("My mother told me" and "Valhalla calling"... And here you'll hear Geoff going the lowest, as he hits 3 B0 in this song), "I can't make you love me", video games stuff like "The Dragonborn comes - Skyrim" or the "Halo Theme" (to be watched to the end... The long, spoken outro is a precious window open onto the reasons behind that particular video and their human beings side), the super cute (yet kinda weird) "Golden hour", the hilarious, Halloween-esque rendition of the classical, instrumental, orchestral piece by Edvard Grieg "In the hall of the Mountain King" from the "Peer Gynt", "We don't talk about Bruno" from Disney's "Encanto" or their live "Elvira", or the collaborations with another GREAT a cappella group, Home Free, "Survivor - Zombies vs Hillbillies"... or whatever else. 🙂
You won't regret, and whatever you choose next, you're in for a treat. 🙂
Home Free is another super great a cappella group, and they're friends with Voiceplay since they both participated in the tv show "Sing Off" and the subsequent tour (it was the 4th season, Home Free won and Voiceplay were 4th). Geoff is a big fan of Home Free's bass singer, Tim Foust. If you watch Voicpley's "Just sing!" video (mandatory captions, they will tell you who the singer at any given moment is and what relationship s/he has with Voiceplay) you'll see them have quite a funny (virtual) interaction, albeit a short one 😁.
And if you were willing to discover another a cappella group that I like a lot, and as we're in Spooktober, you can watch both Voiceplay and The Bass Gang versions of "Ding dong - Hide and seek", both featuring Laura Paley. Same song, two VERY different takes... 😉
    See you next time!

Hey there, you commented about the character voices, I think a wonderful showcase of that was "In The Hall Of The Mountain King"...
For Spooky season both voice play and Bass Gang last year did "hide and seek" both with the same guest. If you haven't listened to either of them it is worth listening to whether or not you want to make a reaction. Both groups took the same song to a very different area.
Bass gang all 4 members are bass singers, and they also have a similarly insane range to what Geoff does, they are absolutely worth checking out. They have just released their 3rd album, which is 4 different disney songs, each with a different lead and arranger. You may have come across all 4 of them before as they also do their own solo stuff and other projects. You have Tomi P, Bobby Bass, Peter Barber and Marwan Ayman.

And yes, you absolutely should react to “Christmas Don’t Be Late!” Much easier on the ears than the chipmunks version. Their featured artist tours with Hamilton. They threw in some VoicePlay original lyrics to boot!
In response to your question if there is anything Geoff’s voice can’t do, that’s a no, there isn’t! He even does overtones in another VoicePlay Halloween cover, Kidnap the Sandy Claws (or something like that, also from Nightmare Before Christmas).
