    They are so talented. They do almost everything themselves. They don't have a crew. Sometimes they hire one camera man, costume people if they are doing something like this, and/or makeup people if they need them. Most of the time, it's just them. They do everything they can, on their own. Eli (Eh lee), did the backgrounds in Unreal Engine, and Layne put them into the frames. Then Geoff or Layne, most of the time, edit the video and audio, and send the audio to Ed Boyer, for final edits.

    I suspect that the sounds you pointed out Layne making are an ingressive phonation technique. While Layne is known to apply some minor effects to vocal lines (Elizabeth Zharroff at the Charismatic Voice does a very cool interview with Layne regarding his production and engineering of VoicePlay tracks; you would probably understand it better and get a lot more of it than I did, but it was fascinating regardless), I've also heard him produce really unnatural sounds similar to those on candid videos, so he's definitely capable of some of them. Whether he's layered several tracks of his percussion, I couldn't say with certainty, but I think it's likely, especially in the second instance you pointed out.

    • @trevors3908
      @trevors3908 3 года назад +4

      From what I recall he does many layers of percussion on most arrangements to get the sounds he wants (if I'm remembering the interview correctly)

      As someone who beatboxes, I can confirm. The way to do it is a fluttering of the soft pallette/back of throat, then throw in alittle hum to kinda resonat it, and then using your lips to give the correct sound out of it. Atleast thats how I have done similar sounds.

    5:51 I had not thought about Geoff being in front of the cave background because of his subterranean notes, but... yeah that 100% makes sense.
    Even without knowing the depths that Geoff's voice can reach, such as with a new viewer, it is a great visual reference for "this is the bass singer" as they are the "lowest" in terms of where they stand in this fictional world AND in the musical arrangement. They know people will be asking "who is hitting that bass note!?" and they can just point to the one person underground.
    Addition: Though of this after, but VoicePlay is really good with details like that. So I would not be surprised in the slightest to find out that was intentional.

    I would really like to hear you react to Voiceplay’s “Hoist the Colours.”
    My own personal opinion is that it is one of the most well-constructed and well-executed vocal performances ever. Every time I listen, it leaves me sitting in silence and marveling over what I just heard!

    You should check out The Hound + The Fox ft Adam Chance version of this, so different but just as amazing. Such smooth harmonies in that one, their voices merry well.

    Don't know about if the beatbox was legit but the technique that Geoff used was indeed Subharmonics

      first slide yes, second one sounds like it had a bit of post- editing going on
      could be wrong about the second one though, if that's all him then that's awesome

    Layne doesn't have an accent - he's born and raised in Florida. However, while all of Voiceplay is INCREDIBLE at character voices, Layne seems to specialize in doing accents. He does a comedic over-exaggerated French accent in both The Little Mermaid Medley and You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch.
    I'm not 100%, but I think I heard in an interview once that the "war horn" noise Geoff is making had some layering done on it to provide the effect. He's not actually doing any multiphonics or throat singing there. (Though he is capable of multiphonics! He does some in the middle of "Kidnap the Sandy Claus")

      There's definitely a little post-production done on Geoff's voice to emphasize the overtones, but he's doing an F1 subharmonic there. He does something similar live in his Singing REALLY LOW vid on his personal channel around the 6:35 mark (also F1).

    This might seem random but, I recently saw a video where you said that you enjoy when people make non-traditional sound with their voice. On that note, try Sam Perry. A Looper form 5he Voice Australia.

    6:36 his using what we call in the beatboxing world a clickroll with a little bit more air and kch snare at the end and they add effects on that clickroll so it would pop more reverb and stuff

    • @joshuakungames6523
      @joshuakungames6523 3 года назад

      in 9:05 after analyzing it i think its a long kch snare and they added an effect that makes that kind of lazer kind texture but its not for sure

    • @joshuakungames6523
      @joshuakungames6523 3 года назад

      or maybe its still a clickroll and kch snare at the end one of those are possible or both or it might just be his special sound but i dont think so

    Geoff is doing Throat Bass. Close to the same technique as Throat Singing where you make your vocal folds vibrate independently so you create an octave split.

    If I'm not mistaken, Geoffs bellow at the start is meant to symbolize Gjallarhorn, the horn that Heimdallr holds that can be heard throughout the realms that he will blow as the Giants approach at Ragnarok

    I don't know if it will help, but Eli is short for Eliezer (hence El-ee), not Elijah (E-lie).
