Fun fact: this song was written by a boy that was seven years old. In the late 9th century, the boy killed a ten year old boy. Whilst he was shunned by the villagers, his mother told him that he would make an exceptional viking. He then wrote this poem. It was first sung by Halfdan Ragnarson and Harald Fairhair.

To answer your question, Dave, dragons played a big role in the viking culture. I could be wrong, but in the Poetic Edda, which is one of the biggest epics in Scandinavia, there was a dragon in a cave which had a lot of gold (I'm not sure if it's Beowulf though) and the dragon would lay dorment until someone would come to take his gold away (Tolkien kinda 'borrowed' the plot for The Hobbit) but I guess that the 4 vikings singing shanties certainly woke him up. What they didn't mention is that he can take the form of a man.... peculiar😊

This song never gets old 😃😂!
@3:46 The Vikings show is half 'n' half in terms of accuracy. The show is set during the 12th century but Ragnar's time had been during the 700's a.d. Ivar was the OLDEST of the 5 brothers rather than the youngest and lived to be 79 while still being disabled as well as conquered ALL of England, Scotland and Wales as well as 2/3 of Ireland within his lifetime. Ivar also didn't marry Freydis mostly due to her being an original character rather than a historical figure. He married someone else and had a son with them but no one knows what happened to them or who they were beyond their names.
Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Bjorn all moved onto raiding and trading on Mainland Europe going as far as the Middle East and further into Eastern Europe including Russia. As far as I know, Ivar didn't go to Russia like in the show but rather continued Ragnar's Legacy on the British Isles and maybe some parts of France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, but that's it.
There are other things that the director, producers, and writers got write and got wrong. But for the most part it was evenly split being historical fiction and historically accurate.

OK, this is late, but It just showed up in my feed. Anyway, yes, this song was featured in the TV show Vikings several times-at one point it was sung by Harald Fairhair and his brother Halfdan right before the battle in which Harald killed Halfdan. It was sometimes sung in Old Norse as well as English. The song comes from an actual Icelandic Viking saga (Egill’s Saga). In context, Egill, at (I think) 7 years old had just committed his first murder (buried an axe in the head of another boy) after which he and his allies killed a bunch more people who tried to take revenge. His mum was very proud of him and tells him he will grow up to own many ships, and will go to distant places and kill lots of people. Lovely bedtime story. LOL.
And also, if you happen to watch Vikings again you’ll notice that low droning sound is often in the background. No idea whether it’s also present in the game. Anyway, It was brilliant of Layne to incorporate it in the arrangement.

I remember reading a comment on this video - to the effect that there are bass singers, and there's, "We need a Viking war horn"
    "Yeah you get Geoff Castalluci"
    "Perfect."

Geoff was making the sound of a Viking Warhorn, and nailed it...

If we tell you what you'll get your reactions won't be pure.... Geoff is a dragon in human skin. I love the Eli looks phenomenal. So unlike himself. And to hear Layne really sing more than just one little part is so awesome!!!!

I always love that you react to both accapela and nerdcore, I thought I was the only weird enough to love both of them

Yes, that song is an original of 1260! Rediscovered by a few Tick-tokers, from Ireland, and Norway, and from Scandanavia. Just see the variations of the song.

Nah, man, I'm right there with you on Geoff. He is flipping amazing, and I LOVE his solo work, but what I still love about VoicePlay is that they just blow me away as an ensemble. Doesn't matter who they bring in, they just kill me every single time, and I'm never going to get tired of it. They bring the theatricality and passion in a way that few other acapella groups do. Like, no offense to Home Free and Pentatonix (though, they're too... commercial for me these days), but VoicePlay just draws me in so much deeper than they do. And, hey, Geoff on his own just... I die. I still need to just settle down with his Little Mermaid reading. I'm intimidated by an hour of Geoff's bass reading voice, though, I'm not going to lie.

You should totally check out Colm McGuiness! His a capella songs (mostly sea shanties) are outstanding and he has an INCREDIBLE Range (his Bass, seriously, I would do anything for that voice)

So, I know you mentioned the backdrops. Those were actually created by Eli (the bald, fierce tenor), using Unreal Engine.
