Geoff’s wife is hard of hearing, so he knows the importance of accurate captioning. Being a hard of hearing woman myself, I appreciate accurate captioning.
The first exposed G1 was in subharmonics. The second was pure, resonant chest voice. The last was a very breathy chest note. The fact that he can sing a G1 with so much variation in registers and cord closure is a testament to his skill.
Isn't it great? After the first or second exposure to Geoff, just about all you can really do is sit back and appreciate the artistry, because it's all been said before (in varying tones of awe and amazement). What I'm really enjoying right now is the evolution of his arrangements. I'm not music-savvy enough to know precisely *why* they are improving so much, but even my half-trained ear can hear it, and it's so exciting. VoicePlay is on the same arc right now; what Geoff and his pals are accomplishing right now is amazing.
I think they were always this good, but practice and putting themselves out there and daring more is making a difference. They just keep pushing their limits and setting new ones--just like Geoff breaking his low note record in the Halo theme.
True! I dont know how but their improvements can really be seen and I love it. I mean they are already great to begin with, but then they keep on stepping up their game. Really impressed with what they've accomplished throughout the years.
Just a guess, but being off the road, and staying home may be a factor. They all have home studio set ups, and are good enough to record their own vocal tracks alone, only getting together to film the video. Geoff has posted a video on how he arranges for voice play on his channel. Worth watching, and funny too.
I found Geoff quite by accident while looking for a particular arrangement of Sixteen Tons (which i never found, but i found Geoff, so it was still definitely a win!). I go to sleep with his songs in my head and wake up and they're still floating around in there, lol. The fact that he's also excruciatingly gorgeous is the icing on the cake, for me. After hearing his deep chest notes, i need a cigarette (and i don't smoke)! Talk about multiple eargasms! 😄😂😊😍😋
Geoff just dropped The Monster Mash for Halloween. So much fun. He also covered House of the Rising Sun. VoicePlay has dropped some new ones you haven't seen. Hoist The Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean. If I Were a Rich Man / Girl. Newest is HALO theme from the game as a tribute to a long time friend they lost earlier this year. I am as subscriber and Patreon of both Geoff and VoicePlay. Money well spent.
Love your reaction! Geoff does his own closed captioning. In his cover of Sixteen Tons, near the end it shows the lyric "I owe my soul" with an additional "Super dramatic bend to a low F# ;)". As others have suggested, please react to Voiceplays Hoist the Colours, it is phenomenal. Geoff just released Monster Mash, you will smile the entire time (when you aren't giggling).
Happy to see you're back reacting to Geoff! Both him and Voiceplay released some incredble new songs recently that you definitely have to check out! Voiceplay: Hoist the colours, some really cool Mini's as well and the Halo Theme (with Geoff hitting a new low note record, so you'll definitely want to hear that) Geoff: Monster Mash, House of the Rising Sun all absolutely incredible and I'm certain you will enjoy them very much!
What I love most, besides the awesome musical ability Geoff possesses, is the friendship and lack of competition with other a capella artists. There is a lot of collaboration with Home Free and others. They often trade arrangements and support each other’s work.
Ay I've been waiting for this one, tbh this is one of my favorite covers from Geoff, next to House of the Rising Sun and his most recent cover Monster Mash
I can't explain it, but his deep voice literally makes my heart pound in my chest, I swear it's the weirdest sensation almost like having a heart attack but in a good way 🥰
I love your reviews, because you obviously know the music/singing domain and give detailed explanations. So happy you're (finally) reviewing Geoff's (great) version of Misty Mountains, give us more! Geoff and VoicePlay came out with top notch stuff lately, If I Was a Rich Man/Girl and Hoist the Colours come to mind. 🌺
Part of Geoff's musical theatre background is his working around Disney World. He does live just nearby. If you look around RUclips, you can find his discussing this aspect of his musical background.
So glad you reacted to Geoff again! Please please please react to his High and Dry cover! In terms of his range and general vocal awesomeness it's the best! A lot of fans have been asking reactors to react to it, but not many have, so there's definitely a market for it! 😁 Also, Geoff hit his lowest note to date in VoicePlay's recent Halo theme cover! (About 10 seconds in I think.) If you do react to that one make sure to watch all the way to the end so you don't miss the tribute. Also, speaking of Geoff and costumes, he just released a cover of Monster Mash with dancing monster Geoffs.
Great addition of the timer at the end. Will discuss a lot of people who will say it was longer or shorter. With this addition, ya can NOT argue about the time. Great Post.
Really great reaction to Geoff Castellucci. If you want to learn more about bass singing techniques across different singing styles David Larson has some great videos and goes into the underlying technique behind a lot of bass singing in acapella, throat singing, and beatboxing, his video "7 Crazy Vocal Techniques for Singing Low (And Beatboxing!)" is a good overview of the different techniques and he has individual videos that go into more depth. I believe in Geoff's own videos on bass singing techniques he references some of David's older videos. Of course Geoff Castellucci's natural range is so low he often doesn't have to use many of these so much, just occasionally for hitting those crazy low notes for a flourish.
Agreed with #Musicbeats001, happy to see you reacting to Geoff :) Also had a giggle about the subtitles. Did they auto generate? Did a person type that in? The mystery continues. Great to be back on your channel Ken! Now go watch Voiceplay's "Hoist the colors". ;) Enjoy.
Your first pause during the violin intro where you asked if they were all Geoff was right before the leftmost Geoff, who looks like Thorin Oakenshield, let out a low note that you either didn’t notice or didn’t realize was him and not an instrument. It’s similar to the one he does in “My Mother Told Me” that sounds like a war horn.
When Geoff drops the low note at 'There shadow's lay' (6:24), he's doing something with his jaw or somekind. It looks like is open up an extra valve or something. You can see the 'click' of the jaw on the cheek. Never seen it before.
I know I'm late to the stream but I absolutely love Geoff and have started watching the different reactions. I love all you guys reacting to those low notes!! If you're still interested, I'd love to see you watch Geoff doing Unshaken. It's awesome!!
I like the last words sound in terms of the story it's grim and looming and haunting like this isn't the first time dwarves sang this song on their march
Yes, those are all Geoff's captions. (RUclips's caption algorithm can't do singing, and doesn't do capitalization). And actually, context in the captions such as what music is playing or whether the singer(s) are saying words or simply vocalizing sounds is actually needed by d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. So that's just good caption writing. Sometimes, he'll color his captions with emojis, and put in what low note he's actually singing, with a wink for the reactors out there. And that's just Geoff. 😉
Yeah, RUclips’s captions sometimes pick up a few words here and there during a song, but usually just say “[Music]”. I like Geoff’s video of “Sixteen Tons,” where the caption says “super dramatic bend to a low F#.” And at the end of VoicePlay’s “Oogie Boogie’s Song,” they say “lower,” “even lower,” and “subterranean”!
@@DennisKovacich The Longest Johns (who did the collab video of "Leave Her, Johnny" that Ken reviewed) have a couple of videos where they sing the lyrics that RUclips/Google *thought* they were singing. Search their channel for "Bad Subtitles." and avoid food and drink while watching.
@@CapriUni, that sounds like videos on the Twisted Translations channel, where Malinda uses Google Translate the lyrics from English through a number of other languages and back to English. She then attempts to sing them as if they’re serious lyrics without laughing. Then there’s the Bad Lip Reading channel that’s always good for a laugh.
The second 'Geoff' with the lighter hair was meant to be Thor Oakenshield. As a bit of trivia, Geoff filmed this at the same studio VP uses and retasked several of the costume pieces used by various members in My Mother Told Me also several of the chairs (and they were used again in House of the Rising Sun). Also, whoever did the closed captions needs to learn the word 'crept' is NOT a 'crypt'. Geoff certainly sang it clearly enough! LOL I get hysterical every time I see 'crypt' instead.
I'm speechless, that's great, what he brings out for sounds go in marrow and leg 😳🙌🙌🙌👌 With him it looks so easy he does this with such a coolness, I love this ❤️💋💯It's wonderful
I subscribed! This is absolutely insane and I’m planning to watch all the Q&A videos on how he can possibly make his voice do that. For a recommendation I’d suggest Sturgill Simpson, anything off his Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 album. Maybe not I Don’t Mind, that’s hits a little too close to home at the moment, but is a beautiful, tragic song. Loving the videos and being introduced to new singers. 🤙
Yes, great version of "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold"! I liked it very much. Actually just recently got to know about Geoff Castelucci. And his songs are great. P.S. Speaking about epic music, can you please react to new epic Dimash song - Stranger? One of parts, where he sings in low register, is really astonishing, cause usually Dimash is associated with middle and high register, and that switch was really unexpected.
Peccato non riuscire a comprendere tutto,ma in complesso ho capito e ti ringrazio x questi bei video. Davvero una bellissima voce questo Geoff Castellucci, che poi ha un cognome italiano! E tu sei un bel ragazzo.Ciao!
Geoff played as Frankenstein and the Wolf Man in the Beetlejuice Graveyard Review at Universal Studios, that's why he is so good at the costumes. Ive been a passholder for years and hate that they got rid of that show.
Love Geoff's voice. That scary low creaky dungeon door sound though!!! 😳😱😍 You know what would be Super Cool !? Geoff & Dimash doing a piece together. Maybe Igor Krutoy could compose something for them???!!! 😆
I grew up on the Hobbit both the books and the Rankin Bass animated movie. This is what I always dreamed that Thorin And Company sounded like in Bilbo's drawing room. If I was Bilbo this song would make me crave an adventure. I might even leave without my pocket handkerchief.
It's funny you mention the "bass resurgence". I think people have just learned now that a good high vocal placement can still have a lot of chest resonance, without sacrificing agility, which makes it easy to hit high notes while still sounding very chesty. But hitting low notes? That's another story. For me it wasn't Geoff Castelucci, but Diana Ankudinova that made me interested in the techniques of bass singers (but for very different reasons, since she obviously has more than just subharmonics going on). Watching your reaction to this video has me realizing that Geoff and Diana have a few similarities in stylistic choices, particularly with the glissandos. It has me wondering if that makes the onsets/offsets easier while maintaining the subharmonics from one phrase to the next. I feel like bass singing falls into one of those categories where it could become a lost art that only a few are capable of passing down. Not unlike polyphonic/overtone singing. I'm not even a singer (Neurolinguist on the medical side of things) and I've been practicing subharmonic bass technique. It's an easy concept to explain/understand, but executing it consistently is so incredibly difficult even as an instrumental effect. Doing it lyrically off different consonants? Bravo if you can pull that off. My hat is off to you.
Are you familiar with Colm McGuinness? He, too, has a very low voice, although he refuted my assertion that he was a basso profundo. When Colm dives down deep into his register, I refer to that result as "beast mode," and Geoff has more than a touch of it. LOVE deep bass! If you decide to react to a Colm McGuinness song, I do recommend guarding your woofers.
The subharmonics are easier to hold than normal chest notes surprisingly enough. With a deep breath, you should be able to hold that last note for about 15 to 25 seconds or more depending on your lung capacity. I'm a smoker, so my lungs have been quite badly abused, but I can hold it for at least 15 seconds. I've heard this song so many times and practiced it, so I can sing along with Geoff and match him note for note now.
Hi Ken. Just wanted to let you know Geoff has released a new cover song with, his reportedly, lowest recorded note yet. It is titled The Monster Mash, yes he covered the monster mash as well as the headless horseman, which is another of his songs to check out. To say the least I'm loving your content on RUclips and I can't wait to see what else you have planned for this year.
His voice does go down that low, but that was a sub in the beginning. His chest voice goes down to a G#1 for sure, and potentially lower. He can sub down to a B0 though which is bonkers.
My dad makes music as profi , he plays Saxophon, violin and klarinet and my was a singer ! I ask my dad when I am 10 years old that i wanna learn to play piano, i want that realy but he say no, he say i have no talant for music and I was very sad, so i never play any Instrument and I never sings, i felt like a alien 👽! Greatings from germany ❤
on a side note - had a look at your website. the text under "Meet Ken" mentions you sang for "his Majesty Prince Charles". Isn't Majesty the title for the reigning monarch? Which currently still is the Queen. Charles is HRH the Prince of Wales.
I do love Geoff's solo work! I jus wish he would go with a little more pure vowels, instead of the flatter pop vowels. (moahst aweah vs. muhhhst aweh ) -- just my own preference on his covers It sounds amazing, though!
if someone told me Geoff was the Dragonborn, and that he accidently shouted a person apart. I would believe them.
It's not too far a stretch from hitting a brown note to reaching the doom notes~
amen brother
Lmao
Funny you should say that... voiceplay now has a rendition of The Dragonborn Comes mixed with Dhovakin.
Behold: the prophetic comment!
Geoff usually does his own captions. They can be absolutely hilarious. I never watch his videos without them on at least once
in this case, i suspect those are auto captions - i don't think Geoff would have such an egregious typo such as 'crypt' for 'crept'.
Voiceplays friends on the other side’s captions are funny at a certain part.
@@greybenauer9803 a lot of their captions on their videos are just hilarious. I always watch with the captions on at least a few times

*fans herself*
i believe this is a shortened version with some verses in different orders
My dad makes music as profi , he plays Saxophon, violin and klarinet and my was a singer ! I ask my dad when I am 10 years old that i wanna learn to play piano, i want that realy but he say no, he say i have no talant for music and I was very sad, so i never play any Instrument and I never sings, i felt like a alien 👽! Greatings from germany ❤
I would love to see you review Geoff’s Radiohead cover !!
I love how Geoff can sound like a regular baritone and then sound like a fog horn on a whim.
on a side note - had a look at your website. the text under "Meet Ken" mentions you sang for "his Majesty Prince Charles". Isn't Majesty the title for the reigning monarch? Which currently still is the Queen. Charles is HRH the Prince of Wales.
Great insight on the singing and technique. You should also check out Hoist The Colours by Melinda.
a 3rd, & 5th Power chords? Do singers use terms like that? When Geoff sings Gold at 1:43 He sounds lower than a cruse ships whistle (fog horn)
G1 in subharmonics
Glowin and blowin, the only 2 HOBBITS he remembers. Lmao!
you should watch "The Misty Mountains Cold" by the wellermen
react to "I Want to Know What Love Is - Gabriel Henrique (Cover Mariah Carey), in the original key of the official video. He has evolved a lot.
I don't know who does the subtitles, these were more accuraate than most I see, just one error Crypt instead of Crept.
@@michellec969 are you talking about Monster Mash?
@@livvhas3447 No.
@@michellec969 That's a different video.
@@christinestromberg4057 yes, I was asking about the comment before mine.
Leprous - Nighttime disguise for your next reaction. Especially the end.
Ayyy, you should check out Alexander Eder's cover of Feelin Good from Michael Buble. He's not as low bass as Geoff, but it's still all sorts of neat.
Seriously checkout the wellerman version of this. It will blow ur mind. Unbelievably good
if your wondering what that low note is ,its a G1 🙂👍
Please do Voiceplay's Hoist the Color
By far my favourite version
Dimash - Stranger. New song new goosebumps
I do love Geoff's solo work! I jus wish he would go with a little more pure vowels, instead of the flatter pop vowels. (moahst aweah vs. muhhhst aweh ) -- just my own preference on his covers
It sounds amazing, though!
I think that's just his accent. I believe he's from Florida.
It's not fair how good he is. I do prefer Peter's version though since he harmonizes with himself and Tim goes for it.
