I think I am the only person I know who does very well with tretinoin. My skin loves the stuff! When I first started it I used it once a week to start very cautiously and even now with skin used to it I still tend to every other to every day. If I use it on back to back days (nights) I will then skip one. I had a little bit of flaking at first about every 2 weeks but not bad. Then it stopped. I also started very, very slowly. NIOD’s modulating glucosides saved me from that mess. I’m now using 0.1% Tretinoin Microsphere Gel and never looked back. In my twenties but I’ve been using Retin-A micro 0.04% _(0.04% Retinoic Acid in Microspheres)_ for years now. It really transformed my skin and enhances every other product in my routine. I still get some pimples around the time of my period so I’ve tried using stronger percentages of Tretinoin in the past but I find the benefits don’t really outweigh the disadvantage of making the skin more sensitive & prone to dehydration. I’ve found the combo of using 0.04% Tretinoin Micro at night and using OTC Adapalene in the morning is PERFECT for my skincare needs around the time of my period. It’s so wonderful.
Thanks Cassandra, great vídeo! The one retinol my oily annoying skin likes is actually retinal, its the Geek and Gorgeous A Game retinal serum. No unpleasant wide effects, just clarear skin. 🥰

Hi Cassandra, thanks for the helpful video. I've been using the Paula's Choice 1% Retinol product, but after watching this, I think I'll switch to the Barrier Repair moisturizer when I use up what I have. I think that will be a better choice for my skin - dry and sensitive with rosacea.
Retinoids have always been some of the most interesting topics to talk about. I've always been very intrigued to try Tazarotene, but sadly, it's not available in my country. We only have Adapalene, Tretinoin and Isotretinoin. My skin was extremely sensitive back then, but after using Benzoyl Peroxide, it became so resilient, that every Retinoid that i tried never irritated my skin, except for 0.1% Tretinoin gel. Adapalenewas the first retinoid that i tried, but it didn't do much on my acne. I used it for 6 months and barely saw any results. Then i switched to 0.05% Tretinoin cream, and it was even much less effective. It just felt like applying a greasy cream that made me look like an oil tank every time i woke up, and i have a combination skin. 4 months later, i switched to 0.1% Tretinoin cream. Same with the 0.05%, i barely saw any results, and i hated how greasy it felt on the skin. Then, i switched to the 0.1% gel version almost 2 months ago. It didn't irritate my skin upon application, but i always woke up with a few dry patches around my chin, cheekbones and near my nose area. My skin didn't turn red nor was it highly irritated like it did when i first used Benzoyl Peroxide. But it made my eye area sting like crazy whenever i wore sunscreen. Thankfully, i found Bioré UV Athlizm 3 weeks ago. It's currently the only sunscreen that doesn't sting my eye area. And i'm glad i switch to the gel version because it's currently the only acne treatment that is effective, especially since Benzoyl Peroxide has become much less effective than it used to be.
Used Adapalene, didn’t see a difference, but didn’t irritate. Use Paula’s choice that you mentioned and inkey list, both don’t irritate and it’s nice. Waiting on Curology to use.
Cassandra, what a joy to see you! Confident and just putting the right stuff in our faces! Im a great fan of several names of Dr,. Derms. and Pres. I agree, Granactive retinoid in emylstion is GREAT! Fellow esthetician here. I adore Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Serum, but it’s 70+ dollars now. It has micro encapsulated HPR, vitamin c, and e. It’s got a silicone texture, but it seriously melts into the skin and feels so silky. I’m curious to try out TO granactive emulsion, because the granactive in squalane was so greasy on my skin (combination with cystic breakouts). It felt like it never completely soaked in.
my first retinoid was HPR. I loooooooooooooveee it!!!! It makes my skin smoothhhhh. I first used it once a week, and gradually built up to every night. Now I want to try retinAl.

They're using actosome retinol. I fricking loved it.. sorry if my English is not correct. It's not my first language that I learned. Thanks you Cassandra make us to try and use retinol
Medik8 is great. Makes my skin feel so nice, however, after buying several tubes, from 3, 6 and the highest 10 versions I'm looking for a cheaper alternative because I have to feed my family as well!
I first came across your videos on Facebook watch and you inspired me to actually get a skin care routine! Been keeping up with it since August! I love how you care about cruelty free products since I do as well and love to hear your recommendations!
Can you do a deep dive video into Tretinoin and the best way to find the right routine. Weirdly, I'm over a month into Tretinoin use and it's like my skin just can't get enough of the stuff. No peeling, no crazy side effects, none of the crazy side effects I hear about in all the videos I find. I do need to figure out the right routine with other products to moisturize. I seriously fell in love with your channel, especially compared to the other channels omg.
I started with retinol then adapalene and now on tretinoin three times a week, must say I saw changes with the three of them but gotta admit tretinoin is like magic. Now, I understand why so many people call it the “holy grail” of skin care 😂
I started tretinoin 3 years ago when I was 32 and I never looked back. I now use 0.1% every night, ask to have it compounded with hydroquinone two times a year, and this has done wonders for my melasma.
I found the brand Cos de Baha, it has a LOT of good reviews at for example iHerb and Stylevana but I can’t find anyone (but one women who seems to be sponsored by the brand) who have tested it from the “skinfluencercommunity”. The brand has among many other products a retinol. Very curious about this brand because it has a good price point. Hope that you can investigate it, really trust your opinion 😃 (and I have because of that I started to look at your videos maintained a skincare routine from September last year, and though I don’t have any “big” problems with my skin other than sun damage (just aging and dull skin which I suppose happens to most people as they get older) I can really se a difference. AND I also use SPF every single day, perhaps one of very few Swedes who do so 😂) So thank you for all your really good videos who all have such a soul and passion, and hopefully there is some way that you in a future video can take a look at the brand Cos de Baha, and educate me even further.
Drunk Elephant sells a slightly mattifying retinol serum/cream, I believe at 1%. It absorbs very quickly and doesn't leave your face shiny or dewy unlike some others. I have dry skin, so I actually prefer more moisturizing retinols, but always paired with a thick moisturizer anyway.
Cassandra Bankson - in response to your question about a retinol product with a matte finish, you could try the “No B.S. Skincare” line’s Retinol Night Cream. In fact, I would SUPER interested to hear your thoughts/see you post a review of the No B.S Skincare line overall. Curious if their products live up to their marketing and if all the claims are true.
I stopped using the retinoid and retinol products from the ordinary because I found it too oily for my skin. The ones I do love are the good molecules retinol cream and retinol from the Inkey list was also very good. My new favourite is from a Korean brand called Bellflower which created a retinol cream. This in comparison to the Inkey list and the good molecules retinol cream is super light weight and it absorbs a lot quicker into the skin. I suggest you try this out if you like K-beauty products.
I am so happy to have discovered you Cassandra 😊, I am 42, been using LRP Retinol for a year, I can see that my forehead fine lines are down to one and my skin has more glow. I don't have pigmentation, only some fine lines due to facial expressions, yes I love laughing with my all 😄. I tried Paula's Choice Retinol+Bakuchiol, but did not work for me, it dried my skin (I have dry and sensitive skin). Now, I am ready to switch and splurge on Medik8 R-Retinoate Intense. I'd love to try a prescription one but where I live it's difficult to get one, only if I go to private dermatologist. otherwise, I don't stay much in the sun, almost at all and only on my way to work, see friends etc...otherwise since I was a teenager I was addicted to creams because of my dry and sensitive skin :)
I had to stop the video after seeing apply whatever you were applying. Can I just say, how beautiful you are! (And knowledgeable and kind and critical but in a good way) 🥰
My question is does adapolene also help with anti-aging? There is so much conflicting information out there. Some say that it is just as good as the prescription medicines while others say that it is only good for acne.
I have slightly oily skin with some dry patches and the best retinoid I have aver used is called Epiduo. I got it prescribed from my dermatologist and it is 1mg/g of Adapalene + 25mg/g of Benzoyl peroxide in a Gel formulation. It leaves my skin completely matt and I have no breakouts if I apply it one or twice a week at night. That being said, sun is very dangerous in the first weeks of using it (even when using 50+ sunscreen) so I would avoid it for a while to prevent the peeling that happen to me!
I'm not typically sensitive, but adapalene broke me out bad. I knew it would happen to an extent, but I was trying to deal with textured scars (some from acne, some from chicken pox) and I wound up getting a bunch of PIH after I'd carefully, diligently, laboriously gotten rid of all my old PIH. I did everything the way Dr. Dray said but I got hit hard. I also didn't love not being able to use my favorite actives at the same time. I quit after a couple of weeks, not long enough to know if it would have worked in the long term. I decided to keep focusing on PIH and breakout prevention and stick to sea buckthorn oil, etc. for retinol. I'm hesitant to try more retinoids but I may try that Ordinary one at a low %. If it's low enough that I can tolerate it, I don't mind waiting a lot longer for results, especially at a good price point. I have very little concern about aging because my family ages like fine wine on both sides, but I don't love my boxcar scars.
I use the gentle retinol cream from Good Molecules, and it's fantastic! I have dry skin and it helps so much, and on days I use the cream I add bakuchiol to my squalene.
I have dry to normal skin. Dry in the winter then normal in the summer. I sleep with a humidifier next to my bed. I drink a lot of water. I definitely want to use a retinol. I have a good amount of collagen in my skin for a 34 year old.
Just started using tretinoin.. annd ohhhmyygoossshh.. amazing!! I'm super impressed.. my skin is adjusting but I can already tell it's doing great things = )
I used to use Elizabeth Arden's retinol capsules then I used a few other products like the ordinary granactive 5% retinol or something then something with retinol from beauty pie.. but nothing compares to tretinoin
Very helpful video! Thank you. Good to hear im using the right products for me because it can be SO hard to actually know sometimes. Im dry, mildly sensitive with occasional break outs and switch off between Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil, Paulas Choice Barrier Rep. Retinol and Bliss Youth Got This Serum. I sooo remember the drunk elephant retinol 😢 it was the actual worst ! I had red skin for real 😢! It was only 1% but it Shute felt has though it was a 10 !!! It was the actual worst 😅
Now I use the retinol 1% in oil and let me tell you, it was this actual product that erased that trauma 🎉
So glad I read this comment cause I was really like "ohh yeah let's get that Paula's Choice shit" then because of you paused on the ingredients and it has licorice and soy and a whole load of shit that would ruin me. Gonna see if I keep tolerating the ordinary squalane then get the retinol one if I do.
I figured out my skin care routine months ago but honestly I am just here for Cassandra's personality now xD
I have dry, mature skin with hyperpigmentation, melasma and rosacea. Before going to Agency's Tretinoin, I used Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 10. It is a 0.1% Retinal serum, very hydrating and never caused any irritation for my skin. I was shocked at how smooth my skin began to feel.💖💖💖
Yes. Matte retinol , paulas Choice antioksidant serum «with retinol» 30ml
How strong is it?
I’ve tried so many retinol products but always go back to The Ordinary Granactive . So excited to see you recommend it
The Ordinairy Granactive is the best !!
what’s your skin type?
I'm 24 and wanting to start using retinol! Currently I just got and been using stratia's night shift cream with 0.15% retinol. So far it's been really gentle and hadn't had any downsides yet! Thanks for this video guide, I'm quite curious of what else I could use for my retinol journey :D
Same age. I just started cuz I have fine lines under my eyes. How is it going?
@@blacklipstick0239 I think its going ok so far, I do notice a little bit of purging so I'm really hoping its going to clear up soon the more I use it.
Kitten appears at 10:22. I have been really afraid to try retinols, but this is helping me decide to try it. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I was just wondering if you had skintellectual discussion about retinol before..love this!!
Thanks Cassandra, great vídeo! The one retinol my oily annoying skin likes is actually retinal, its the Geek and Gorgeous A Game retinal serum. No unpleasant wide effects, just clarear skin. 🥰
My faves are the ordinary’s granactive retinol and naturium’s retinol cream. I didn’t have irritation with either and both are very effective.
hi you had any acnes?
Yes, but very mild.
I've been useung Geek&Gorgeous A-Game, 0.05 Retinal since Dezember and I love it 🦋🦋🦋🦋💚💙💚
I've been using the 1% but haven't really noticed a difference. It's been working for you?
@@parisinthe30sx It has worked for me. I hope you see changes soon. 🤞🏻💜
Have you used it to combat acne?
@@rora1435 not for acne. For gracefully aging 😊
@@parisinthe30sxit's also not working on me
I’m 24 going to be 25 in June. I’ve been wanting to get into retinol but my skin is sensitive AF!! Thank you so much for this video! So helpful!
If your skin is also dry I recommend the paulas choice bakuchiol and retinol combo cream (or the versed retionol, it also has bakuchiol in it).... it worked wonders on my sensitive skin, i pretty much cant handle anything
10:26 is the Secret Cat! 🐈 love your vids Cassandra!❤️
Very nice - this was such a complete explanation, appreciate the effort and research behind :)
I love Acne Free’s adapalene; it absorbs nicely and helps my adult acne and oily skin. I hope it’s helping with fine lines and wrinkles. I hear different things, that it works for anti-aging, but also that there aren’t enough studies to show that it does.
My favourite is the no7 advanced complex retinol 1,5% it is so nice for my dry skin
Both my daughter and I now use adapaline gel based on your recommendation. Love the stuff. My daughter's acne is so much better! Not sure about my wrinkles yet, but it's helping some of my hyperpigmentation. ❤️
Hii ! Did it helped with your hyperpigmentation what about acne too?
@@mamtaarora7174 it absolutely helps with acne. I'm not sure how much it helped with the hyperpigmentation, but I also use Pycnogynol , so it does.
@@NissaMaezHartman okaay. :) how is your daughter's acne now with adapeline?
@@mamtaarora7174 It's so much better. It seems to get worse the first month or so, but then it helps a ton! She only gets occasional hormonal breakouts. Her face looks great! I highly recommend it for acne.
@@NissaMaezHartman thankyou so much :) i m very happy for your daughter but actually i am worried that i have acne n only spots so whether it will help with spots or not though m using niacinamide.
You always have a video on everything I'm struggling with.. thanks cass..
And i prefer you over all the other RUclipsrs here cuz you always recommend Cruelty free products and i personally adore that.. cuz no animal deserves to die or suffer for my skin or someone else's skin 💚..
Bless you!!
I just bought my first retinoid, perfect timing :)
I have been using the ink list retinol and I love it! I’m 29 and have fine lines and dry skin
Retinol x cleanser, eye cream and triple x Retinol-X moisturizer. I have oily skin around nose and cheeks. Swear by this!
Avene Retrinal is excellent!
I use Apostrophe 0.025% tretinoin 3 days a week & the PC 1% retinol the other days ☺️
the Pacifica Wake Up Beautiful Retinoid serum dries pretty matte in my opinion and is super gentle! On my oily days, I'll use it without a moisturizer and it doesn't overly-dry while also not looking or feeling oily.
Hello beautiful people 🦋💜 I’m a aging butterfly and love your videos Cassandra! Especially glad you did one on this topic! Just had another MOHS procedure done and also going to have Photodynamic Therapy done and want to add a retinal when this is all done ✅ Listen to Cassandra 👍🏻 use your sunscreen!
😻 Kitty is chilling at 8:41. There is also a possible kitty sighting at 2:51 & 4:01 (same clip) but I can't really tell if it's a black kitty or just decor.
I also want to add that I am 43 and it is 100% thanks to you that I actually am starting a skincare routine (about 30 days in now) and my skin is so much happier without the 30 years of makeup that was slept in and layered over every day. I wouldn't call myself a skintellectual yet but I'm getting there. I love your videos! Thank you so much for creating this channel! 💙💜🦋
It’s at 10:24 😊
Hi Cassandra, thanks for the helpful video.
Another brand i love is Geek and Gorgeous A-game, Retinal in two strengths 0,5 and 1. Totally rules if ya want a acne-prone, and aged skin to Transform your face in no-time. They are not mattifyinhg, but thieir more mat.
thats my tips, from Sweden. ;) thank you Caz for a really "livley" channel with a sharp tongue. Love it!
Adapalene (Differin) gives me the skin of my dreams (I still breakout sometimes but overall skin is incredibly smooth and bright)
Whitch % did you use
Replenix Retinol 5x Regenerate Dry Serum is a matte retinol 🙂
Thanks for sharing that AcneFree adapalene is cruelty free! I want tretinoin but should get back on the adapalene train first.
Hello I'm 23 and I've using retinol since probably almost a year.. and my skin loved it.. and my skin type is oily and acne prone skin.. and always have acne, especially on my period. And retinol helped my acne. And make my skin super glowy.. owh I forgot to mention what kind of retinol I'm using.. I'm using retinol from AVOSKIN, local brand from indonesia. They're using actosome retinol. I fricking loved it.. sorry if my English is not correct. It's not my first language that I learned. Thanks you Cassandra make us to try and use retinol
Omg Cassandra I am literally in LOVE with you and your channel. You have changed my life.
Thank you so much for your videos, Cassandra! You are so informative and super fun to watch!!
Now, I understand why so many people call it the “holy grail” of skin care 😂
thank you for such an in depth but straight forward breakdown
I started tretinoin 3 years ago when I was 32 and I never looked back. I now use 0.1% every night, ask to have it compounded with hydroquinone two times a year, and this has done wonders for my melasma.
How do you get it compounded?
I found the brand Cos de Baha, it has a LOT of good reviews at for example iHerb and Stylevana but I can’t find anyone (but one women who seems to be sponsored by the brand) who have tested it from the “skinfluencercommunity”. The brand has among many other products a retinol.
Very curious about this brand because it has a good price point.
Hope that you can investigate it, really trust your opinion 😃
(and I have because of that I started to look at your videos maintained a skincare routine from September last year, and though I don’t have any “big” problems with my skin other than sun damage (just aging and dull skin which I suppose happens to most people as they get older) I can really se a difference.
AND I also use SPF every single day, perhaps one of very few Swedes who do so 😂)
So thank you for all your really good videos who all have such a soul and passion, and hopefully there is some way that you in a future video can take a look at the brand Cos de Baha, and educate me even further.
I use Cos de Baha retinol and is really good. I buy it in yesstyle and is quite affordable because is a 60ml bottle.
I love your content, thank you for all the free info!
0:14 OMG Cassandra is one of the most ravishingly beautiful and stunning women in the universe. Her beauty is surreal
Thank you so much for this video! Have been waiting and hoping you’d do exactly this!
We asked && you finally gave it to us!!! Only just starting it but hoping it helps me find a place to start
You are so so fun to watch. Informative and fun that I had to leave this comment. Haha. Thanks for this video. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and guiding us through the maze that is the beauty industry.
I had to stop the video after seeing apply whatever you were applying. Can I just say, how beautiful you are! (And knowledgeable and kind and critical but in a good way) 🥰
I'm currently phasing in the ordinary granactive 2% retinoid. Almost onto using it every other day now. Very excited to see if it helps my skin!
My question is does adapolene also help with anti-aging? There is so much conflicting information out there. Some say that it is just as good as the prescription medicines while others say that it is only good for acne.
Adapalene gel is amazing I got the brand af i love it thank you for all your advice
Skin type is so dependent on your environment, your products, and hormones.
Wow! This was soooo helpful, thank you!!! Also, your skin is really looking great!
Brilliant tutorial, it really helps to get that perfection you're aiming for. Thank you so much!!
I love your videos with background music 😊
I have slightly oily skin with some dry patches and the best retinoid I have aver used is called Epiduo. I got it prescribed from my dermatologist and it is 1mg/g of Adapalene + 25mg/g of Benzoyl peroxide in a Gel formulation. It leaves my skin completely matt and I have no breakouts if I apply it one or twice a week at night. That being said, sun is very dangerous in the first weeks of using it (even when using 50+ sunscreen) so I would avoid it for a while to prevent the peeling that happen to me!
I just got Cerave retinol. I will see it goes. Medik8 sounds good. Think I will try that after.
I love tretinoin so much, it is my favorite ingredient ever and forever 😂
I was just wishing for this video 😍! Thank you!
Geek&Georgeous have two strengths Retinal that are so great ..and they are not expensive as...f... Run girls the 101 A game from G&G is to dy for !
I use the gentle retinol cream from Good Molecules, and it's fantastic! I have dry skin and it helps so much, and on days I use the cream I add bakuchiol to my squalene.
Thank you for the Ordinary recommendations !🦋💖
I use differin gel and I used cerave retinol and neutropenia rapid wrinkle repair and their oil retinol one too and I loved those.
I have dry to normal skin. Dry in the winter then normal in the summer. I sleep with a humidifier next to my bed. I drink a lot of water. I definitely want to use a retinol. I have a good amount of collagen in my skin for a 34 year old.
13:04 is my favorite sound bit
13:03 those hand scissors tho
Love this video it was very informative and I have a normal to dry sensitive skin
Thanks for using cruelty free branda
And sometimes La Roche effaclar adapalene gel to spot treat acne.
Hidden kitten is at 10:23. Also please keep doing these, they are really fun.
Lotsa great info! Thanx for callin out those friends of ours who are so against "chemicals" and breakin down how water, air, etc is all chemicals 😂😂
I've got pretty normal tough skin and the acne free adapelene worked great for my millia and fine lines. In Ireland we can't get adapelene in store only on prescription so I buy on Amazon
I am using Maelove and I love it. I will try your sugestiones for mature skin. Fantastic content once again.
Im just 14 but my doctor recommened me to use adapalene gel for acne
Yes! Thank you for this video!
How many drops to use ? I just put 1or 2 drops with other ordinary products. Just started regimen after literally dying 3 years ago. My skin aged about 20 years in the last 3 years. An well enough now to address this. And thanks to advice I am going at it and am determined to get those years back. As many as possible. I am 75 and damn determined!
Hi. Love your channel. I find the Retivance by Suzan Obagi MD leaves a matte finish. Also says Obagi Medical at the top of the tube. It is a retinaldehyde product plus vitamin C and E.
I love kiels retinol. Not matte but super gentle
