With this movie, the "Lament" in "Lament Configuration" makes sense. The worst punishment the Cenobites could give to Riley is that she has to live the rest of her life knowing she not only couldn't save her brother but that everyone's death was because of her.
I think it was a really smart move to show not only do Cenobites recognise emotional/mental pain as valid in their teachings/ethos but also its likely the "safest" reward option by admittig you've already taken enough of their "gifts" and need no more.
In retrospect, I do realize that Trevor basically spent the whole movie trying to get the Configuration out of Riley's hands. Like, he tricked her into taking it and was immediately like, "actually. Never mind. I'm gonna throw this away." Riley: "We need to go to the mansion and save my brother" Trevor: "Let's just call the police, dump the box, and leave." Like, I gotta appreciate that he at least tried to repent. I'm also glad all the characters felt like real people instead of typical horror movie archetypes. Like, relatively, Trevor is obviously the archetypal jock, but he never felt like it.
I loved this movie, not just as a solid horror film and sequel, but for it being about an addict deciding to reject desire via the Cenobites showing her how monstrous it can get.
I believe the hell priestess “Pinhead” is Kirsty from the original. In the comics, she trades places with pinhead in hell. She wanted to be with her loved ones. Pinhead was bored of his existence and wanted to be human again.
I guess the idea of the story is that the whole ordeal was a tragedy. Riley got all those people killed, including her brother, all in vain. I never realized the true meaning of Lament configuration until now. All in all, this is the best Hellraiser movie so far. Also, am I the only one who screamed "NO!" when Chatterer died? 😂 Not my boy! Ps: Your doggo's face was everything. He was like, "what the hell am I watching?"
i think the idea is that its an allegory for addiction, addiction (the box) doesnt just effect you but also everyone around you like friends and family
I like Riley's plan to lure another Cenobite in and stab it to pass the next stage. Less than 15 minutes later and she's already using that surprise information to use.
Hence why pinheas gave her the lament configuration. The “gift” is living with despair/torment for the rest of your life. Day in and day night she will forever remember what happened and no matter what she can’t forget about the events.
I think many people who didn’t like it were more fans of the original movie as opposed to fans of the book. I didn’t particularly like the original movie, mainly because I felt like there was no reason for Julia to do anything she did, I also felt like the description of cenobites were much more fleshed out in this movie. In the 1987 movie, the leather glossy outfits were cool but with this one, there’s a feeling of they’re doing this because they really want to push the limits of the human body, the piercings, the skin being pulled taut and being stretched out to the point of it lengthening, it really does feel like this is something that pushes that narrative.
@@MrFredstt To quote Wayne from Letterkenny: "That's a Texas-size 10-4!" Definitely closer to the book. In the OG movie, Pinhead clearly appears male where as in the lore, Pinhead is more androgynous while leaning slightly feminine if you can call it that like in Hulu's release. I love the original but this is so awesome as well! :D
@@Schatje79 Ah ok. Yeah this movie had me a bit confused on some aspects. Pinhead being one of them and then the box being another. Because in the first 2 Hellraisers there were no "gifts" or different configurations so I thought maybe the movie was retconning the lore. Interesting to know that this one follows the books more closely and that Pinhead is more ambiguous in appearance
@@MrFredstt The apparence of the Cenobites is closer to the book... but basically everything else is not. The "gifts" and the other configurations are not in the book. The box in the book explicitly only does one thing; summon the Cenobites. Kirsty wonders if there might be other boxes that open gates to heaven, but both those and even the existence of a heaven separate from the Cenobites' realm is presented pure as speculation on her part. The focus on hooks is mainly a construct of the first film, and Leviathan wasn't even in the book, it was invented for the second film. The idea that people become Cenobites was also introduced in the second film. And the whole demanding sacrifices thing is not in the book at all, and is more in-line with the films, in the book they don't even take Frank initially until he gives them permission and they warn him that it might not be what he expects it to be and that he can't go back if he agrees. And they don't try to get Kirsty after she leads them to Frank either. In the book they give exactly what they claim to, pain and pleasure to such extremes that you can't tell one from the other, they are both heaven and hell, in that if you push either to it's logical limit they become indistinguishable. Also I don't know what that other person is going on about about Julia, she behaves basically the same in the original film as in the book.
I liked it and totally agree that it feels more in line with the first three films the the rest of the series (as it is). I also liked the visual of Roland Voight's mansion being within Leviathan's maze as it lowered from the sky, as if the mansion itself had fully crossed over into the Cenobites' reality. All-in-all I liked it as much as the first two movies, which is good because those are the only Hellraiser films I actually like (Bloodlines was kinda cool only because it explores the history of the box and where it comes from).
After I watched this one I immediately watched all 3 originals and it felt good. This movie blends really well with the originals. Not the previous sequels
Here's the thing, Riley is only at fault for the first time the box was solved, but she didn't know what it would do. The second time was pure accident, she had the old lady were fighting over it, she didn't set out to make that happen. The third was Vought, he took the box, solved it, and stabbed the girl in the back. She used it to kill the Chatterer, and tried to use it on the Mask, and Vought again used it on the last guy. Riley didn't ever actually try to use the box to get her brother back.
I tingled, I tangled, I watched the damned thangle! And the sights I saw? Total breath of fresh air for the laboring Hellraiser series; I loved it. I hope there will be more to come.
One of my favorite parts of the movie was the score. It brings back the familiar cues and themes from the first two Hellraiser films so beautifully done by Christopher Young. Ben Lovett did such a wonderful job with the music! I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed the movie. That ending was both wild and awe inspiring. Such a good movie. I also liked the fact that the Cenobites do not wear leather anymore but that their costumes are their skin. Like... how do you make Pinhead's skirt into flesh like that?!
In the novella, it is said that their clothes were sewn through in and out of the Cenobite's skin. So the clothes and skin are fused together, very much like the original movie, actually. Although the novella didn't specify anything about black leather getup 😂 So I guess the 'clothes' they wear could be anything? Including other human skin, maybe? 🤔
@@nitrokid I was like I must know how it works LOL. And yeah, that shit is wild to me but I think its very interesting too. I also like that their eye color is black/blue. You normally wouldn't see that. The Cenobites looked great.

Just came across your channel and I’m glad you guys enjoyed this film. A lot of people are divided about the look of the cenobites. I’ve seen the originals and they didn’t look scary, just gross or weird. This film? The wheezing, the way they spoke and moved, like they were clearly in constant agony of just existing but they loved it. They were deliciously horrifying.

Really enjoyed this new take on the Hellraiser lore. The only thing I didn't like was that if you got cut you were screwed either way, even if it was an accident. In the original, the cenobites would only come if you desired it and seeked it out, not by happenstance...
I don't think that really differs from the original or the novel at all, Kristy opens the box on accident and they don't care. They still want to take her, she only gets away when she offers up Frank as a trade.
This box isn't like the old box, it wants the person who desires the gift and 5 sacrifices. Everyone else it ignores if they are caught in the hell dimension like the chatterer walked right past the characters. This one forces the person wanting the gift to inflict pain on others to obtain it. Opening it is like franks resurrection, you're immortal but screwed and have to kill to affect your situation.

Well Pinhead did say in one of the original films, "Demons to some.. Angels to others."
The name 😂 best poll ever
Kevin is fascinated with Cody
💯 percent fire throughout nonstop cinematic platinum
I’m never touching a Rubik’s cube again
Jamie Clayton knocked it out the park as the hell priest…i actually preferred it to the original as it’s not as campy….this just felt dirty, dark and like a dark slug over the film…plus it’s closer to the hellbound heart I lived it
