Saw this in IMAX yesterday. Had to drive an hour to get there but was so worth it! She was so right when she said that the climb was about more than the climb. I've never climbed but the movie was inspiring me for my own life.
From the film, Alex describing his girlfriend: "She's small, and cute, and livens up the place [his van]... and doesn't take up a lot of space". A true romantic 🙂. I use this line on my wife occasionally.
I find what truly makes the movie as enjoyable as it is isn't just the daring climb but perhaps even more is Alex's personality. He comes across as such a friendly, simple, genuine, likeable, guy. But in truth, I think he's very clever and knows how to capitalize on this remarkable success story.
Agreed; in another interview (with the ditziest of interviewers) he clearly points out that it's a business relationship that allows him to do what he want's in life - both his non-profit and his climbing. So, poverty, travel, van, interview junkets, promotion, is a thing. And they are doing him a favour; for which he's thankful. Very very smart man
I think he made the film because he was okay with having his climb documented. I think him being capitalistic is besides the point; the whole movie was about him doing this for himself, not you, me or anyone else. Is that capitalistic?

(and I think you meant to type "don't use words I* don't understand"... it's ok my guy, we all learn at our own pace. You'll get your vocabulary to high-school level some day!)

While there are kinder ways to do it; it's a nice upfront way of finding out where you stand, instead of years down the track going "oh, well, waste of years not knowing" Good man, also learning new tricks every single day, what's not to like about that?
On the flip side, despite his honesty, she might well fall into the common trap of "i'll change him with my love." at which point, both ppl lose. I hope he doesn't follow in his dad's footsteps there🙁

DK3CHAMP in a profile that I think was by Munchies, he argues that, though his risks are more obvious, so many other people live very high-risk lives by not exercising or not eating in a healthy manner.
One of my favorite aspects of the film is Alex's attitude towards his gf. I love how straightforward he is with her and how much you can see his passion and determination thru that. You can tell he cares about her, but the free solo is the goal, and nothing is going to get in the way of that. I think I'm a bit callous in my view of her attitude, because he is just so straight up and tells her exactly how it is, and she acts like she's ok with it but then will make these little comments about how he doesn't have to do it, he can just give up anytime he wants and shit like that. Her actions are 100% reasonable and I understand where she is coming from, but it really frustrated me while watching the movie. I would imagine it is very difficult, but if you are going to date someone like Alex who is planning to do something like this that no one else has ever done, and has told you exactly what/how it is, you kind of have an obligation to be his support and not make it harder on him, or just leave. She definitly made it a bit harder on him, but overall did support him, and made the choice to leave when he seemed to be ready to go. Idk, I overthink everything and probly sound like a dickhead, but I love this stuff. Anything that makes you question morality and responsibility, especially when combined with someone achieving a once in a lifetime, God-like task. The stakes are just so high. I'm gonna go re-watch Free Solo now... rant over lol! Just to be clear, I really like his gf, they make a good couple and she clearly makes him happy. I just disagreed with some of her decisions in the movie and enjoy breaking down stuff like that and considering the deeper aspects of human relationships in these kinds of situations.
I agree but as an outsider it's easy to say. I think most people would find a situation like that challenging because being in a relationship seems paradoxical to his goals. As he said later in the interview, as his relationship deepened he realised that his balance had to change. I guess Sanni was just projecting her (very legitimate) worries about the future which isn't ideal but very understandable as you say. Also although she made those small comments I didn't get the sense she was trying to stop him from doing it, I think she was just struggling to understand it as someone who values her relationships.
This (the climb) was obviously no big deal for him. However, I think the question about "putting up that wall" was misinterpreted. I think in any sport, as long as the athlete has that "wall" up, as Alex has had in the past while he has accomplished these AMAZING climbs, he is able to really hone in and make it happen flawlessly and look at it as "no big deal". Now that he has camera crews, AKA distractions who want him to make it look and feel like a big deal, things will change because "no big deal" DOES NOT sell for television... Be careful and stay humble Alex, ditch the camera crew...
What a drain you need to lose that girl no support only for herself what she needs bummer your such a cool guy alex dont make excuses for why you cant be that person they should be finding their own purpose you’ve found your without them for sure
It's interesting that when mountaineers climb K2, which kills 1 climber for every 10 that make the summit, they are somehow given what amounts to an "ethical pass" with respect to their responsibilities for their inter-personal relationships. While we root for these dare-devil mountaineers to succeed, most people are more saddened for their family and loved ones when they die than they are judgmental of the mountaineer. I feel that for Alex there's been a lot of judgment directed toward him about taking the risks that he has without properly considering that some people take even larger risks than he. My guess is that with Alex's training he probably had a 90% chance or better of not dying. How is it different other than the fact that nobody had done what he did before?
@@justicemoody "Stop whining? But what would I do with my time?? :-) I think you misunderstood my comment. My point was that a lot of people are quick to pass judgement on Alex and that I don't think that is right. It's not constructive or accurate to portray Alex as cold, emotionless, and selfish. He's just different, and the particular risks he takes seem strangely foreign to us. That difference is what made him succeed and it should be what helps us to understand that the risk he took climbing El Cap, while significant, were to him reasonable - maybe like an accomplished mountaineer climbing K2. Take this review of Free Solo www.thedartmouth.com/article/2018/11/review-free-solo-portrays-the-heartbreaking-costs-of-triumph where the author starts, "Honnold’s life is terrifyingly devoid of the warmth and care of love, and it seems to have left him adrift." To me, nothing is colder than that remark.

Hes a great athlete and a very good guy gives 3rd of income to charities and such) but boy do I feel for any woman that marries him... Watching the documentary it feels he gives absolutely zero f for any gf hes had. Even with a gf probabily waiting outside his van while they re interviewing him, he says he would put el cap first and break up with her. And in every scene shes always the only one being affectionate. I wish women would give more importance to how much they receive back.
I do get your point but keep in mind there are other layers from his childhood etc that have made him how he is when it comes to emotions and affections. In the film Tommy Caldwell mentioned how matter of fact alex was when Ueli died. He shows his gf he loves her in the ways he knows best and I think as much as she struggles she knows where she stands as he is quite brutally honest about it. After his climb he tells her he loves her something Jimmy said he never tells anyone. seems like he has improved, last I read he felt like he was mean to her watching the film and has mentioned he is treading towards marriage so I guess her patience with him is paying off :)
That’s one of the weirdest replies I’ve ever received on here. You must be one of those pussies who’s totally subservient to your wife. Does she limit your screen time and tell you when to speak? I say what I want, when I want. Bitch.
Oh gosh he’s better off solo. That girlfriend to much talk to many questions annoying it seems she’s so in to him pushing to hard for a relationship and he just wants to climb! That’s the only thing he loves it seems. He just wants quietness and peace
Woman: "How could you put your 20 year life dream ahead of me? Don't you realize that if you fall 2000 feet and explode like a watermelon, that will be very difficult for me?" Typical guy: "Oh don't worry baby, you are the most important thing to me. I will always put you first and nothing bad will happen." Alex Honnold: "I will always put climbing first, because that is who I am and the way I climb is truly special. Yes I might die and I'm totally mentally prepared for it. You are some girl I have known for a few months. It's true that I like you sometimes, so you can come back to the van in a week or so if you want." Men, this is what a role model looks like. A will of iron, discipline, focus, talent, and he is a good man to boot.
hahaha, I totally agree. As a woman, it is what I find most inspiring of him. True to himself, straightforward, dedicated and nonetheless funny and humble. A role model beyond gender, really.
He has aspergers and doesn't understand fear or emotion, his amygdala doesn't respond like a normal human. Did you even watch the documentary? The guy isn't a role model.
Catherine Destivelle quit free soloing when she decided to have a child. My guess is Alex Honnold is also this kind of person who will follow the same path.
I think she's vulnerable and inexperienced which makes her presence more authentic and meaningful. Like you would have been on your A-game being filmed. Cute though how you think you can understand that.
Alex has mentioned they had just started dating when filming began. He just engaged her over Christmas so clearly his views on her are way different than yours

After what Alex did, everyone needs to throw away their North Face clothes. He is the only one who is worthy enough to wear them.
What a drain you need to lose that girl no support only for herself what she needs bummer your such a cool guy alex dont make excuses for why you cant be that person they should be finding their own purpose you’ve found your without them for sure
next- alex down climbs free rider- not a big deal...
Stop whining
@@justicemoody "Stop whining? But what would I do with my time?? :-)
I think you misunderstood my comment.
Take this review of Free Solo www.thedartmouth.com/article/2018/11/review-free-solo-portrays-the-heartbreaking-costs-of-triumph where the author starts, "Honnold’s life is terrifyingly devoid of the warmth and care of love, and it seems to have left him adrift."
To me, nothing is colder than that remark.
i thought it was weird in the documentary that she kind of had no reaction when she talked about when she wasnt paying attention and he fell off the mountain and almost ended his career.
You think that fall almost ended his career? Yeah no.
@@ellena.8369 definitely didnt help? fucking your spine up in anyway is usually not good. my point is i just thought it was weird how she had no reaction to it.
@@schuschu121 She definitely did. I think if you're being filmed, whatever comes naturally is tainted by the damn camera. How does her presence affect you or hurt you? The filmmakers won an oscar.
@@ellena.8369 she didnt it definitely came off like "oh well shit happens". i never said it hurt me i just found it odd thats all. how does my observation hurt you? you seem very up in arms over this. she shouldve been paying more attention and shes lucky thats all he got from falling off a cliff
@@schuschu121 Too bad he didn't get hurt and ended up defeating the climb, so your point holds no weight.
Chai's voice... omg
The film is more than JUST the climb. Because JUST the climb would be sooo hey-ho monday morning at the office,.
Did he really just say "she's falling for you" about Alex' girlfriend? :D
Fucking hell this guy climbed el cap without ropes and all they're talking about is some broad.
That fucking outro
2:37 At least when he was climbing El Capitan he was not falling for her.
Do you cut your own hair?
She was upset if he falls he won't be climbing on top of her anymore😂😂😂
Or grabbing her with those massive hands lol
The only thing I like to free solo is my wife.
That’s one of the weirdest replies I’ve ever received on here. You must be one of those pussies who’s totally subservient to your wife. Does she limit your screen time and tell you when to speak? I say what I want, when I want. Bitch.
@@ogs1mpson609 Do men have bigger brains in your country.?
Yeah Buddy that was just a joke man. Lighten up.
Yeah Buddy btw. We use ropes sometimes too 😘
Yeah Buddy get over it man. What are you, the morality police on RUclips? Your obsession with my comment is bordering on ridiculous.
What the hell is happening out of the window
Mild Aspbergers?
aceconcept he’s just awkward bro
Jacob Stone he’s not awkward just smarter than you
M Ace hahaha awesome comment
Actually being a little awkward is a strong sign of intelligence.
His dad was, so it could just be more learned
Oh gosh he’s better off solo. That girlfriend to much talk to many questions annoying it seems she’s so in to him pushing to hard for a relationship and he just wants to climb! That’s the only thing he loves it seems. He just wants quietness and peace
Love and climbing can co-exist
That's not his girlfriend lol. That's the filmaker. His girlfriend is super supportive.
Woman: "How could you put your 20 year life dream ahead of me? Don't you realize that if you fall 2000 feet and explode like a watermelon, that will be very difficult for me?"
Typical guy: "Oh don't worry baby, you are the most important thing to me. I will always put you first and nothing bad will happen."
Alex Honnold: "I will always put climbing first, because that is who I am and the way I climb is truly special. Yes I might die and I'm totally mentally prepared for it. You are some girl I have known for a few months. It's true that I like you sometimes, so you can come back to the van in a week or so if you want."
Men, this is what a role model looks like. A will of iron, discipline, focus, talent, and he is a good man to boot.
@David Howard lol no way you can watch a few videos of him and know he's a sociopath
hahaha, I totally agree. As a woman, it is what I find most inspiring of him. True to himself, straightforward, dedicated and nonetheless funny and humble. A role model beyond gender, really.
@David Howard he definitely isn't a sociopath.
I have to admit..the film was amazing but his gf really irked me..
He has aspergers and doesn't understand fear or emotion, his amygdala doesn't respond like a normal human. Did you even watch the documentary? The guy isn't a role model.
I tried to like his girlfriend but just couldnt
my only "issue" is he will start to age. I worry that he won't quit ever and one day his body just won't perform the way he needs it to.
Agree. I hope he won’t comtinue to push to maintain at the top level. Most of the big wall climbers that died during climbing were in their 40s.
Catherine Destivelle quit free soloing when she decided to have a child. My guess is Alex Honnold is also this kind of person who will follow the same path.
maybe, but often it's different for men than women@@akseli9
lets hope@@33Jenesis
It seams like his girl was only in it for the publicity. Shes nice but I noticed in front of the camera she always put on a scene.
He's lucky he has a girlfriend, some of are super lonely, all the time
Chai seems so hot and horny 🤷🏻♂️
Trumptards can’t relate
Chai's nonstop fake smiling drives me absolutely bananas. 🤬
