I don't like the interview, don't get me wrong. But the lack of emotion both of them display, comes from the same ways, the same parenting problems. Although in differrent extremes.
Surprise! An anonymous source told me about all of the pain that you experienced during your entire life, let me ask you some detailed questions about it while I chuckle in my tiny polo.
This interviewer makes me so mad. Even if he knew the shit in Alex's background, he should have asked him open questions about his upbringing. Imagine being told some version of your personal life on camera and being ask to react to the interpretation of your life. Fuck this guy.
This is insulting. Dude, how can you bring up Alex' childhood and his worst memories of that period.?Just look at your face while you're asking him that. Get some social training or start finding a new job where you don't talk too much since you cannot even complete a normal sentence or a question. I feel sorry for Honnold, he did it really down-to-earth with this dude.
The reason he is such a good interviewer is that he bring things up like that and let’s the person talk without interrupting them. Alex is just not very enthusiastic like most people and doesn’t articulate himself the way most people do which is why it was awkward.
I agree with Alex, I didn't realize my father was a sociopath until my 40's. I thought the beatings were normal and I was the problem but my behaviors were the result of his beatings.
??? He's not describing his father as any kind of sociopath. And beatings aren't abnormal, it's only the psychiatric community that's labeled them as such in the past 20 years. Given they're also responsible for shitty parenting trends today, bring back spankings 100%.
I don't think being famous gives someone cart blanche to drill you on all the nasty details of your personal and family life. Perhaps if it was done in a far more tactful way that honors the interviewee it would be interesting, but this felt like a car wreck.
it was a total ambush... really disgraceful and utterly lacking in compassion. Alex is there keeping it together and giving composed answers while this overgrown frat bro smirks and keeps digging in the wounds.
I disagree with a lot of the comments here, I think it's interesting to hear athletes struggles outside of their sport. It humanizes them and also gives people who have gone through a similar situation like myself hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel no matter how bad your childhood was there is still room for success in adult life.
The reason he is such a good interviewer is that he bring things up like that and let’s the person talk without interrupting them. Alex is just not very enthusiastic like most people and doesn’t articulate himself the way most people do which is why it was awkward.
The interviewer is ok...sounds like Alex had typical 1980s parents who weren't particularly happy together. It's not "extreme" in the slightest. They weren't abusive and sounds as if they just let him pursue his thing because they had their own issues. That's all fairly typical. If Alex was troubled by his dad's death, he merely threw himself into climbing. I think Alex is a wee bit on the Aspberger's spectrum in that he is obviously obsessed with one thing and able to block out everything. That's a talent that will truly help you on a big wall.
I have never left a comment on the internet before, more specifically a rude comment. After watching this I would request this man interviewing Alex to remove himself from interviewing more people. There are thousands of questions you can ask Alex and all you talk about is how he felt when his life went tits up for him. No sympathy, no real resources in your interview, and you always interrupt him. I am so sorry Alex had to go through this interview.
I suggest you stick to not commenting. There are hundreds of videos of Graham interviewing people where he does a great job. Of all the videos of him you watched the one where he could have done a better job (this is just one video of several he has with Alex and Alex himself enjoyed the interview). I am so sorry the internet and civilized people had to be scarred with your asinine comment.
@@columbus7290 gtfo out of here Chris literally replying to every negative comment, get a life. Alex is a saint for putting up with this dudes bullshit
K3r0411 SoccerMidd10 Graham is great interviewer when the guest has a personality. He is very hands off and allows the person to speak, it only works with guests who give in depth responses.
Just shows his inner strength and believe in himself :) handling this is just possible when walking the right path, the path of happiness, freedom and joy.
My first ever RUclips comment because I am so appalled by this interviewer. How can he get away with this? Totally inappropriate and I actually don't want to know about the things he is asking Alex Honnold about... I am interested in his achievements and career! Absurd.
Graham is great interviewer when the guest has a personality. He is very hands off and allows the person to speak, it only works with guests who give in depth responses.
Chris Gratsas lol at you replying to everyone’s comments in this section. Alex is not a bad interviewee - he is just different than typical athletes and celebrities (who are trained in the art of interviewing). Thus, the burden is on the interviewer to adjust accordingly. Graham is a good interviewer, but he used his same formula expecting it to work. I’ve watched the entire interview and it’s clear that Graham wasn’t as prepared as he’d like
Ive always thought graham was a respectable interviewer until now. He’s goes so deep into traumatic memories himself about alex that he’s practically putting words in his mouth. Not something you should do as an interviewer and super messed up
I obviously dont know either person but the idea of an interview is to ask questions some easier than others. It seems Alex is thoughtful in response to what you would call difficult questions. Everyone saying the questions are too much are the typical sensitive millennial type. Alex is on another level mostly mental but obviously physical as well
Any climber will tell you that the joy of climbing is simply in moving on the rock. Whatever the grade it really is an awesome experience. Well I liked it.
I swear, every time I watch an interview from Graham, all of the comments are about how bad of an interviewer he is, and how insensitive he is. I don't see that at all. I've seen this full interview so many times and he did a great job. Alex is clearly comfortable talking about these things openly and knows Graham isn't trying to be rude in any way. People need to chill and give this guy a chance. He seems like a nice guy who ran a great interview and I loved it. Don't be so judgemental.
Wow I was cringing in pain for Alex the whole time, hoe insensitive and rude of an interviewer. He doesn’t even get to know Alex classic case of thinks he already knows him through “another source” and then asks him insensitive questions. Lucky for that guy Alex was calm enough to stay and answer these questions.
LOL, everyone here does realize that Alex agreed to the interview and knows what topics are going to be discussed, yes? No I guess not. Pretty good interview. Perfectly natural to dive into what makes him tick to a degree.
yeah, he probably saw the questions before the interview, people out here getting offended on his behalf while he's answering the questions completely calmly and thoughtfully
Great that a Sacramento kid made it big in Yosemite! Lucky that he didn't try to get in with the Sierra Club there, he'd have been banned for doing class 3 and over.
I don't understand what's with all the personal questions? I mean I get why the interviewer is asking them, but why is this relevant to his climbing life? It seems like he is asking him everything but the thing they should be talking about...
right?! I coordinate artist interviews for a radio station and if I or one of our moderators conducted ourselves like this with a musician we'd find ourselves blacklisted from future promo. Climbers want to climb, artists want to make art. They force themselves to do grueling promo work to promote projects they care about, not to have their personal lives and traumas rooted around in for people's entertainment. They'll put up with a small amount of that as the price of promo, but this is way too much gossip rag / unwilling therapy couch and way too little focus on what Alex actually does.
Your "somebody told me..." interview approach is lazy man. Please be a bit more humane when asking these sorts of questions ffs. You can see Alex has a different perspective on life because of what he does for a living...almost monk-like
Alex is interesting probably because of the really intrusive questions and never ever losing his cool under pressure his answers come off sounding semi- detached. It's probably this ability to block everything is what allows him to throw 100% focus into climbing and doing what does. Was the interviewer actually trying to get Alex to de-rail and show emotion, or is just really bad at his job??? Either way parts of this were hard to watch.
Atrocious interview. You can see the flash of anger or rather disbelief in Alex's eyes when this dude starts with the whole line of invasive questioning, but he plays it off in classic Honnold fashion with a bit of dry, self-deprecating humor, stays courteous and cool. Then instead of backing off and moving on this dude doubles down and dredges up all this super sad and over-the-line, disrespectful questioning. What is this, Dr. Phil? I don't know if it's the lights hitting his eyes weird but Alex looks super somber. Most stars of his profile in other lines of work (music or film) have managers who would shut the whole interview down if it started heading in this direction. Climbers are pretty chill and Honnold is always professional and courteous in this kind of setting, but this is an example of someone really abusing it. Just because he's not a diva and doesn't walk out of the interview or tell you it's inappropriate, doesn't mean you get a free pass from showing some common sense and respect.
Why is this guy smiling asking serious and uncomfortable questions about his family ? Anyone else thought this was weird?
And what's up with his shirt? Must not come in his size...
because it's uncomfortable.
I don't like the interview, don't get me wrong. But the lack of emotion both of them display, comes from the same ways, the same parenting problems. Although in differrent extremes.
