This recipe is a hand-me down from my mom. She made it often growing up, and we always called it Shepherd's Pie. It's the perfect way to use a pound of ground beef and whip up supper in a giffy! Hope you'll try it and enjoy. Feel free to share how you make yours different, I know there are a lot of versions out there! xx, mb
See printable recipe card here: www.thisfarmwife.com/blog/beef-skillet-shepherds-pie
    INGREDIENTS:
    1 pound ground beef
    1 small onion, diced
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can Veg-Alls (or peas & carrots, mixed veggies or 1 cup frozen mixed veggies or any assortment of leftover veggies)
Mashed Potatoes (enough to cover top of dish - perfect use for leftover mashed potatoes)
    Shredded Cheese
    DIRECTIONS:
Brown ground beef and onion in skillet, drain
Mix soup and veggies with beef mixture
Top with mashed potatoes and then cheese
Bake at 350 degrees until bubbly on sides and cheese is melted

Butter, olive oil, diced roma tomato, some shredded carrots, 2 cut up jalapeno sausages, 2 cups left over rice, red and orange bell peppers, cup of egg whites. Seasoned with soy sauce and voila I had supper. Otherwise known as clean out the fridge...LOL See I started with butter.

I was brought up eating Shepherds Pie. We always had the version made in the Joy of Cooking cookbook. You don’t have to follow a recipe to the letter. It’s just a baseline. You add and subtract as you feel necessary or for what you have on hand. That’s cooking.

How do ya like that one?!?!?😜😜😜lol Hey love your vids, think your family is awesome, and think you're awesome! I can't wait to see when your children are older and they have this cool video diary to show their children!!! Although they may get a little flustered cause you're leaving them some pretty big boots to fill for "coolest" (or whatever word kids now-a-days use) parent award! Lol. Your scavenger hunt was tops!!!😎😎😎. May God keep blessing y'all!!!👃👃👃 Also an idea for ya....Why don't ya plant a home garden??? The first time I ever heard it called cottage pie was by a Englishman. He even said either way it's said it was cool. Now I have a breakfast version. I take ground breakfast sausage. Then top it with a gravy then layer it with frozen shredded potatoes. Then cover it in cheese. Bake for 30min at 350. Then with a large spoon push little pockets in the cheese and cracks eggs in the pockets. Put as many eggs to your liking. Return to the oven for 10 to 15min until eggs are done to your liking. Let cool for 10min and enjoy. I tend to do this in a Dutch oven but a casserole dish should work.

In America that particular style of pie is called Shepherd's Pie - whether it be made with cow, sheep, pig or even chicken.
In the UK they name it by what's in it: Cow = Cottage, Sheep = Shepherd, Fish = Admiral - and then there's the regional variations which have different vegetable mixes, cheese or no cheese, it can get real confusing!!!

Hi Meredith. Well this is going really well. I don't have time to be highly involved with complex recipes. And I don't have that kind of skill but my little one and I do need to eat and your TFW Cooks programs have helped so much. Used to be mostly cereal, pizza, or a drive thru. Such a relief that I can make stuff without being "in a box" of precise measurements with a bazillion ingredients. Takes a lot of pressure off and seems possible that maybe I'll even invent something of my own with an iron skillet and meat then butter and other things that might just add up to something good. If I do maybe I'll let you know. Also I've never had lamb and I don't think of why I would but anyhow my little one, Max, and I thank you and look forward to the next episode!

Meredith it’s called shepherds pie, it’s something that I eat when my mother was still alive. I miss having that meal, there is never a bad pie. God Bless.

I told you don't worry what others call any of your dishes , I've never ate Lamb either,

Not everyone likes lamb. It tastes quite different from beef and some folks aren't prepared for the difference. I like it but beef would be most common in the USA.

To me keeping a recipe simple like you just did comes out a lot better than if you put a whole lot of stuff in it.

Using just a layer of browned, drained ground beef, then whole kernel corn topped with mashed potatoes in a pot baked in the oven till the potatoes slightly brown it was called "Chinese Pudding" in my childhood household; have no idea why. Never thought to ask anyone from China if they ever made the dish!
