This is awesome! I dealt with reflux for ~8 months till I finally saw a doctor. He basically said "I don't know why you have this, and it doesn't matter. I'll give you 3 months of prilosec. Let's see what happens". Staying on prescription drugs for the rest of my life doesn't sound very appealing to me (I'm only 24 for crying out loud!) This kind of information is EXACTLY what I'm looking for! Thanks!

You are awesome!!! It took many doctors visits and nexium prescript to realize that I had to stop eating greasy heavy foods after 6 or 7pm. I have had to start eating more raw vegetables and fruits to relieve the symptoms without taking the drugs. It has been life changing to get away from the constant commercials running in my mind about the three meals a day and all the meat I was consuming. I am not young any more...

Have you also considered low stomach acid as the actual cause? Not having enough stomach acid may relax the LES and allow undigested food to produce bacterial acid which could reflux up the esophagus.

Also true. Sphincter muscle is triggered to shut when enough acid is present

Nyck461 Nick, eating habits are very important ! make sure to 1. chew the food very well, 2. eat slowly. 3 do not overeat! those are common causes of Acid Reflux and GERD in my practice. and make sure to stay away from meds! long turn use of acid reducing meds contributes to carcinoid tumors and will increase rate of esophageal, stomach cancer, paradoxically!

Finally, I decided to stop taking the pills, eat smaller meals, lots of veggies, less fat, fewer carbs....still drink a few cups of coffee every day but almost never have attacks anymore....and I used to NEED to take a pill everyday or even a sandwich would give me heartburn!

    Hi Sleepypoodle,
Thanks for sharing with regards to your friend. I am sorry your friend had to pass away from cancer. I did get my referral but my symptoms has been better. I heard endonoscopies run a risk of infection w the instruments and internal bleeding. One of my family relative died from internal bleeding from an endonoscopy. I am going to hold off on this invasive procedure until I really need it. I appreciate your concern and so sorry for the loss of your friend. Hopefully, everyone reading these posts will learn from your friend's experience. Blessings :)

If you have acid reflux or too much acid, try eating red apples. Red apples has alkaline effects which neujtralizes acid in your stomach and esophagus.Use a fully ripe apple and make sure you remove the skin before eating it. I used to suffer from severe acid reflux. That was 10 years ago and I got rid of that problem since started eating red apples. It worked for me, my family, friends and co-workers.

This doc knows exactly what he is talking about. Keep trying the different Tx options he explains. I used to have heart burn but have it 100% under control with diet and lifestyle. What worked for me was ditching sodas and fried foods and replacing those foods with steamed veggies and grilled chicken/fish. I'm still able to eat the occasional junk food because the strong base of my diet has eliminated my heart burn. Maybe others have a different way of controlling their heart burn. I'd love to hear how others controlled their heartburn so I can relay your information to my patients as well.

If you have constant heartburn try not eating wheat products for 2 or 3 days. I had heartburn for years but as soon as I stopped eating wheat products it stopped. I assume it was because of gluten.
Now I can eat, drink anything (Apart from wheat) and I don't have heartburn or need any medication Also I feel much better, more energy, lost weight etc.

I've been investigating a theory that heartburn is caused by compression of nerves in the spine. You know how pinched nerves can cause weird muscle spasms everywhere? It makes sense that the LES can spasm open at the wrong time, and the stomachs normal digestive contractions can be too hard or erratic as well, leading to indigestion and acid reflux. This theory makes a lot of sense to me. Zillions of people have H. Pylori and hiatal hernias, but no heartburn. Plus heartburn is an age related and obesity related disease. So... back trouble, compressed nerves... acid reflux. makes more sense.

    Hi Doc,
You the man. Tried some DGL and apple cider vinegar after nearly a week of hearburn. I never had it before a day in my life, but I knew it was from eating late at night. I bodybuild to facilitate my rowing sport, and I started helping my younger bro lose some weight. He works late so I'd save my post workout meals for after we finished. Clearly a huge mistake. I've been suffering food coming up my esophagus, my chest being on fire, and my stomach just churning. I've been having episodes all day so I thought what the hell. Tried your ACV + DGL combo right at meal time, and followed up with some fresh ginger root tea: No pain whatsoever and that was 2.5 hours ago. Thank you so much for putting this info on the net and making it available to everyone. You're doing an amazing public service. Thank you.

I only get acid reflux if I eat Chinese food and barbeque meats. My guess is that my reaction to Chinese food is the MSG. Every time I take a couple of bites of Chinese foods, I have to go to the bathroom and regurgitate the food. Large amounts of an opaque, slimy looking, thick liquid comes up. I can then let my stomach settle for a few minutes and then eat the rest of the food. With barbeque it is the same. I eat a little, sometimes only one bite, and I have to go throw up. Then I let my stomach rest for 5 or so minutes and I can finish the food. Weird, I know. Taking a Zantac on occasion about 1 hour before I eat those foods sometimes prevents throwing up; but sometimes I still throw up. My wife makes Chinese food at home but I never get the reflux reaction; so I think that the restaurants are using lots of MSG and that I am allergic to it, or at least it sets off a volcano of acid being pumped into my stomach.

I can't say for everyone, but it worked for me. Eating meat - food for us to hard to digest makes our bodies adapt to it, increasing acid production.
Disclaimer: I'm not a preaching vegan, I'm not saying you should go veg, just saying that this is what solved the problem for me. If you're considering going veg - that might be another thing you'd profit.

Got acid reflux for the first time two months ago. Never smoked, never been overweight, never been pregnant. Had two negative blood and stool H. pylori tests. Had a normal upper GI result, apart from their detecting 'mild' acid reflux. Tried PPIs and natural meds. Nothing helps, except consuming lots of dairy, which I usually don't consume. :(

Test for SIBO via a lactulose breath test, also if you can find a clinic that does a Heidelberg pH test so you know with some empiricism that you have high acid, it'll be easier to move forward. If you have SIBO, you'll need antibiotics or anti microbial herbs and following the "bi-phasic" diet helps. If you just have high acid, following the acid watcher diet and using Heartburn Tx from Vital Nutrients is super helpfuls. DGL chewable tabs are great too. Oh, vitamin D, if you live in a cold cloudy place, you're deficient, 10,000 IU a day. Hope this helps!

Let me benign with the fact that I'm not representing any companies or trying to sell any products. I'm only a person that USED to have serious digestive issues and the usual things associated with it: bad breath, constant bloating, constipation, metal taste in my mouth etc.
I used to have really really bad heartburn. I accidentally came across a product called Zypan (made by StandardProcess). I never had a heartburn episode since I start taking it. Now I can eat anything I want (tomatoes, citrus fruits and cabbage stuff including ). Apparently Zypan has HCl in it. You can get heartburn if your stomach doesn't produce enough HCl and can't properly digest the food. Another product that really helped me and some of my family members that had the same problem is Apple Cider Vinegar pills. For me the American Health brand works the best. They usually come in 600mg/ serving. Good, proper digestion is so important to keep your body healthy.

I don't eat dairy or wheat, I don't have H Pylori or Cealiacs. Kayla Nguyen Change your doctor!
A very dear friend of mine died from stomach cancer which had already metastasized by the time it was diagnosed. His imbecile of a G.P. had been treating his chronic, relentless acid reflux and stomach pains symptoms with repeat prescriptions of H2 receptor blocking drugs for TWO YEARS before referring him for any investigations - by which time it was too late.
Unfortunately he was a very gentle, trusting and unassertive man - as was his wife and it was not until he'd lost a considerable amount of weight and was passing malaena (black, tarry stools) that he eventualy insisted on an oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy.
People can no longer rely on the integrity or efficiency of health care professionals and need to take control where their health is concerned.
Incidentally, in the meantime for symptom relief - squeeze the contents of half a fresh lemon into a glass, add about 50 -100mls of water and drink two to three times a day. Lemon is the only citrus fruit which converts to alkaline in your stomach and is a very effective and healthy way of controlling the symptoms of heartburn/acid reflux.
      Bon Courage!

You're wrong and you're hiding what GERD truly is and you're putting acid reflux and Gerd as if they are the same when they're not the same... I'm not an emotional person but it really hurts when people like you put out these videos and you don't address the differences from GERD and reflux.. Acid reflux is natural and will happen to people from time to time and that is what you are addressing and it's good advice to regular folks who are getting acid reflux after eating bad foods and drinking alcohol and coffee and just avoiding foods and drinks we didn't evolve with and a healthy eating life style will cure them from getting the burn and the pain BUT and it's a huge BUT,,, GERD IS A DISEASE AND IT'S CHRONIC AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO AND WHAT YOU EAT AND WHAT YOU DRINK, YOU'LL STILL GET ACID AND THE STRONG SALIVA TO BURN THE LOWER PART OF THE ESOPHAGUS AND SURE EATING BETTER AND STAYING AWAY FROM ALL THE BAD STUFF HELPS A BIT AND YET WE GERD SUFFERERS ARE IN PAIN 24/7 BECAUSE DURING A H HERNIA THE LES IS BLOWN WIDE OPEN AND IS FORCED TO STAY WIDE OPENED AND YOU START TO FEEL THE BURNING AND NOTHING YOU DO HELPS AND EVERYONE TELLS YOU TO TAKE ANTACIDS AND YOU GO SEE A DOCTOR AND HE PUTS YOU ON MEDS AND NOBODY EVER TELLS YOU THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE A HERNIA AND THEY DO AN ENDO PROCEDURE AND LOOK INSIDE YOUR STOMACH AND THEY DON'T FIND ANYTHING AND JUST GIVE YOU MEDS AND THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS DOING IT ON PURPOSE AND THEY DON'T IMMEDIATELY TELL YOU THAT IT'S A HERNIA AND WHILE YOUR OFF DOING ALL THESE CRAZY WAYS OF TRYING TO FEEL BETTER, THE ACIDS ARE BURNING AWAY THE LINING OF THE ESOPHAGUS AND DESTROYING THE LES WHICH IS THE VALVE AND WHEN YOU FINALLY HAVE HAD ENOUGH AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN'T LIVE WITH THE BURN FOREVER, THEY SEND YOU FOR YOUR LAST ENDOSCOPY AND FIND THAT YOU HAVE A LOT OF DAMAGE IN YOUR ESOPHAGUS FROM THE YEARS OF DEALING WITH THE PAIN AND DOING STUPID THINGS LIKE THIS AND IT'S SO SO STUPID BECAUSE WHY DON'T NORMAL EVERYDAY PEOPLE THAT EAT AND DRINKING LIKE PIGS NEVER GET GERD AND YET THE PEOPLE THAT ARE EATING AND DRINKING ALL THESE HEALTHY THINGS YOU MENTIONED ARE STILL SUFFERING IN AGONY AND HOPELESS AND SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED AND GOING FROM DOCTOR TO DOCTOR AND FINALLY YOU GO FOR THE SURGERY AND THAT'S WHEN THEY UNCOVER THE HERNIA AND PULL IT BACK DOWN AND INSTEAD OF JUST PULLING THE HERNIA DOWN TO SEE IF MAYBE THINGS WILL GET BETTER BUT NO AND THEY WRAP THE STOMACH AROUND YOUR ESOPHAGUS NEVER EVEN TELLING YOU THAT YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO THROW UP AND THAT'S A HUGE BIG DEAL AND NOT BEING ABLE TO THROW UP IS A HUGE HUGE PROBLEM AND IT CAN KILL YOU AND YET THE WRAP AND FIXING THE HERNIA DOESN'T WORK AND IT EVEN HURTS MORE IF YOU HAVE DAMAGE BECAUSE THEY BRING ALL THE DAMAGED EROSION TOGETHER AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER AND THE PAIN NOW IS 100 TIMES WORTH AND YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO COME OUT OF IT FEELING SOME RELIEF BUT YOU ARE IN AGONY AND SO YOU GO UN WRAP IT AND YOU FIND THAT THERE IS NO ESCAPE AND BECAUSE THE LES MUSCLE VALVE IS COMPLETE NOT EVEN THERE AND JUST DOESN'T EVEN EXIST AND I DON'T GET HOW HARD IS IT FOR ANYONE TO FIGURE OUT THAT THE LES WAS DESTROYED BY THE HERNIA AND BY THE ACID AND IT JUST DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE AND THE LES SHOULD ALWAYS WORK AND IF IT DOESN'T, NOTHING CAN STOP AND YOU CAN EAT AND DRINKING THE HEALTHIEST FOODS IN THE WORLD BUT IT WON'T HELP BECAUSE ACID HAS TO EXIST AND STRONG SALIVA AND MILD BILE AND IT'S JUST SEVERE PAIN AND IT STARTS TO ATTACK YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM AND YOU FEEL ANXIETY FROM THE PAIN AND YOU CAN RUN AND LOOSE WEIGHT AND NOT EAT BEFORE BED AND ELEVATE YOUR BED AND NOT SLEEP FOR TOO LONG AND IT STILL WON'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE GRAVITY DOESN'T WORK AND ACID IS BEING MADE EVEN AT THE VERY TOP NEAR THE BROKEN LES AND IT WILL GET THE CELLS OF THE LOWER ESOPHAGUS AND CONSTANTLY HIT IT EVEN A LITTLE AND YOU HAVE CHRONIC PAIN AND THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED GERD WHICH IS GASTRO ESOPHAGUS REFLUX DISEASE AND YOUR MISS LEADING PEOPLE AND THAT H. PYLORI HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GERD AND THAT'S AN ENTIRE OTHER ISSUE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ESOPHAGUS AND THAT IS A DIFFERENT TOPIC AND THIS VIDEO IS A DISAPPOINTMENT AND IT'S TRASH AND I HAVE HAD GERD FOR 25 YEARS AND IT'S ACTUALLY INSULTING THAT YOU ASSUME TO THINK YOU CAN CURE GERD AND BELIEVE ME THAT WHEN YOU HAVE GERD, YOU'VE ALREADY TRIED EVERYTHING AND NOTHING WORKS.. EVEN GOING TO SLEEP ON AN EMPTY STOMACH IS ACTUALLY BAD BECAUSE THE ACID HAS NOTHING TO BIND TO AND SO THAT'S RETARDED AND YOU'RE HUNGRY AND NOTHING FEELS BETTER THAN GOING TO SLEEP WITH SOME FOOD TO GET YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT AND IT'S ALL BS AND YOU SHOULD MAKE A BETTER VIDEO AND NOT MISS LEAD INDIVIDUALS AND TELL THEM TO GO TELL THEIR DOCTORS IT'S A HERNIA AND TO LOOK FOR THAT BECAUSE 9 OUT OF 10 TIMES A HERNIA IS WHAT DESTROYS THE LES AND ONCE THE LES IS DESTROYED, YOU ARE LOOKING AT A PAINFUL LIFE AND YOU DEAL WITH THE PAIN ANYWAY YOU CAN BUT AT LEAST THE RIGHT INFO PUSHES FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND IT WOULD BE SO EASY TO INSTALL AN ARTIFICIAL VALVE THAT CAN DETECT WHEN YOU'RE DONE EATING AND JUST CLOSE THE LOWER ESOPHAGUS AND WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO EAT, YOU CAN TURN IT ON AND JUST COME UP WITH A REAL SOLUTION AND NOT THIS HEALTHY BS THAT DOESN'T WORK ONCE YOUR LES IS GONE FOREVER AND THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN REGROW YOUR LES..
