Angela Gossow was the original female singer and she picked Alyssa White Gluz to replace her. Angela has moved on to be the bands manager. Alyssa came from The Argonist another great band. She also has an extremely good clean singing voice with a large range. Check out BattleBeast ,Noora is a legend.

Yeah, Alissa's clean vocals are GORGEOUS! I don't like, that Vin is like "I don't think she can sing, it's not AE's thing." Vin, I love you, but just do your research instead of being like that. Please. It's not hard to do a very quick Google search of the woman.
Also, listen to "Liar Liar" by Kamelot. Alissa is featured on that song and does clean vocals in that song. Alternatively, listen to Alissa's former band "The Agonist". Of course, the songs where she's still the singer. Otherwise, you'd hear their current singer (who is awesome, too btw). Alissa does clean vocals there, too.
Love and respect you guys. Rock on! \m/

Everybody was taking their responsibility with their instrument seriously because this band is a supergroup. A supergroup means that every member of the band has had a successful career outside of the band. Either as solo artists, members of other successful bands or some other musical achievements. These guys are pro's, through and through.

Hi Vin and Sori. Yes, Alissa does a lot of clean singing, but not in Arch Enemy although she did some layers here and there and there is one song in the latest album with some clean singing. But it's not AE's style.
Before AE, she was in The Agonist, where she did both vocal styles, and now she is a guess vocalist for many bands, e.g. Kamelot, and has her own solo project. She is incredibly talented. And Canadian.
If you're going to listen to more AE, I suggest "Ravenous".
    Cheers.
PS: another song from her in her previous band, The Agonist ruclips.net/video/EdT7M4f2L9A/видео.html

Angela Gossow was their previous singer (she's now managing the band) and she did look kinda tough on stage :D You might want to check out songs off their Live in Japan DVD *Tyrants of the Rising Sun* with Angela (I'd love to see you do *Nemesis* or *We Will Rise* ). Pretty fantastic concert. I prefer Angela's vocals over Alissa's, but the blue haired lady also has a fantastic stage presence. A very good live band indeed! I also love the addition of Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore) on guitar. The man's a wizard!

I am a fan of their music, but live they've never inspired me I must say. It is all so slick, choreographed, theatrical. Which is great on a huge stage because then you can see something happening from a distance. But it also feels hollow, staged, impersonal to me.
*edit* now I think about it it's mainly Alyssa who is so theatrical.

Nobody has mentioned that their new second guitarist is Jeff Loomis(curly haired one in the video) from Nevermore. I hope he is more involved in the writing process in the future, he only wrote his leads and solos for this album. Michael is an amazing guitarist, but when you see them live, Jeff stands out more with everything he plays and his tone just cuts through and is so clean.

Well I am honored. I got an official mocking from Vin. I might have to become a Patreon now. 😀
As for the band, Micheal Amott I guess would be the leader. You have heard Jeff Loomis (curly blonde guitarist) on the Nevermore reaction. I do prefer Angela Gossow as the vocalist. She sang on the Nemesis song you mentioned. However, Alissa is amazing in her own right.
Whether or not it was intended, I think this song has a lot of implications that are valid today. While the lyrics can encompass both sexes, I think the fact that it's a female saying them adds to the message. In a male dominated world and even a male dominated genre of music you have both Angela and Allissa showing that not only can they hold there own with the boys but in some instances outshine them. I put them both very high in the top metal vocalists. Sori, imagine you're fifteen again. In a society where everyone is telling you how a woman is suppose to be. That it's far more important to be beautiful and to use what the good Lord gave ya. Where sex is what sells. Then you see this video of a woman not giving into stereotypes, telling you that the power is in your mind. I really feel like this is a very empowering song for women. That's just what I take from it.
I've also come to a realization on how much music both of you may have missed out on. I get pumped up because I want you to at least have heard not just metal bands but music from other genres like rock, classical, new age. I'd go nuts without my music.
Anyway, thanks for the mocking. Lol

Who can not love this song? Arch Enemy is one of my favoure band and most of people seems to like Angela better but Alissa is so much much better vocalist. They have a song on Will of Power, no video as of yet, called "Reason to Belive" where she sings with clean vocals in the verses and growl in the chorus and that is a great song so you should check that out. I haven't seen Angela live but Alissa is great live. I do like your analysis of the song though. Good video.

As much as I love Alyssa, I much prefer her work in The Agonist over Arch Enemy. I felt she kinda lost something in the transition. I can't put my finger on what exactly.
If it's ladies week you HAVE to do The Beauty of Suffering by Spiritbox. I'm seriously begging you to do that song. Courtney is one of the best female vocalists out there right now. She has SO much fucking passion in her voice, both her cleans and her harsh vocals. She, and the rest of the guys in the band, deserve so much more attention than they're getting. I'll seriously shoot a quick video of me begging you to do that song if that's what it takes.
    Much love guys!

She lost part of her soul. She put everything she had into The Agonist but got fucked over by Century Media, and because of that the band still had to do 9-5 jobs back home on top of doing all the stuff for the band. It was spirit crushing. This opportunity came along so she took it in hopes that some day she can use the momentum to once again branch out into her own artistry, as right now she's simply a marionette.

... also @11:16 , Vin, you are totally true on this. It was acknoledged that when Alissa joined the band, she would not use her clean vocals to fit in Arch Enemy,s style. She can sing clean vocals, just listen to her previous band called The Agonist.
Also... Alissa joined under Angela Gossow's demand. Angela wanted to partially retire and spend time with her familly but she still manages the band from behind the scene. Nice story heh !!

Their have been three vocalist for Arch Enemy. The 1999 lineup did a reunion tour through Japan as Black Earth a few years ago and you can find video of that on RUclips. “Bridge Of Destiny” is my favorite classic Arch Enemy track and Angela had her take at it for many years live as well as the recordings of old Arch Enemy songs on ‘Root Of All Evil’ album.

  • @thorwulfx1
    @thorwulfx1 6 лет назад +3

Arch Enemy tends to be a little bit overproduced in their studio work. They are far more dynamic in the live setting. I find that I like them best in short bursts, one or two songs at a time, as they do have a formula they use for the song structure. Within that framework, the lyrical content tends to be a little bit one-note for each song. Two or three verses establishing the idea, then a big chorus, then lots of guitar wizardry, then some more chorus. In the metal world, where songs can be super twist-laden and unpredictable, it can feel somewhat poppy. Still, the guitar work is always great, the songs always full of energy. Both Alyssa and Angela, their earlier (2nd) vocalist are great. Different energies, for sure, but both great. You're right, in that Alyssa can sing (very well) in the clean sense. She does a really neat guest appearance on Kamelot's "Liar, Liar", where she sings both harsh and clean. I think you guys would like Kamelot, which is symphonic metal with clean male vocals at the front. Finally, I'd urge you to check out one of the Arch Enemy songs from the Angela era, like "Leader of the Rats." She's an epic level bad ass.

Jeff Loomis (the blonde guitarist) was the brains behind Nevermore. They broke up a few years ago, and I got excited when I heard he accepted the job for Arch Enemy. His talent for guitar is always viewed as among the best in the world, and it's matched by his songwriting ability. Sadly, Arch Enemy is not using him to his full ability, only telling him to put a solo here and there. Arch Enemy has become very formulaic, and a lot of people were hoping that Jeff would be able to give them a kick in the ass to write better music with his unique style mixed in. They are not letting him do that though. :(

Alissa White-Gluz, the new singer of Arch Enemy, can sing clean vocals. She is from another band called The Agonist, which she fronted with clean and harsh vocals for a long time before being invited to join as the lead singer for Arch Enemy. She was invited to join Arch Enemy by the band's former singer, Angela Gossow, because Angela was pregnant and wanted to retire. She now manages the band and supports Alissa. Arch Enemy's style doesn't include clean vocals, so Alissa never gets to use them anymore unless she gets featured on another song or something. If you like the dual-style of clean and harsh vocals, Sori, then check out some songs by Solution .45.

This is going to be a long comment: First, Sori, you really stepped up her game in this one, well done! Second, although this is a good and accessible song for a first listen, you really have to listen to their older stuff; at least the Gossow-period. It's honestly extremely hard to recommend single songs, rather, whole albums: Black Earth, Stigmata, Burning Bridges with original vocalist Johan and then Wages of Sin, Anthems of Rebellion, Doomsday Machine, Rise of the Tyrant and Khaos Legions with Angela Gossow. The album called 'The Root of all Evil' is also great if you want to hear Angela's growls and screams of older songs. Alissa White-Gluz (current vocalist) is worth checking out, especially in her original band, The Agonist. As a side note, researching Arch Enemy's history led me to Carcass, one of the founders of melodic death metal; and absolute must-listen!

    Random Facts:
Saw them opening for Blind Guardian a long time ago when Angela Gossow was the singer. She had terrifying stage presence. I had no idea who they were at the time. Imagine the shock of hearing her singing death metal growls live if you had no idea what you were in for.
The really awesome riff transition at about 3 minutes in is in a completely different tuning than the rest of the song. A really strange thing to do. When the whisper part comes up right after, the tuning switches back. No idea how they handle this live.
The guitarist that shreds the first solo and has the mop of blonde hair is Jeff Loomis, legendary guitar wizard from Nevermore. When Nevermore broke up he had a few solo projects (and a very cool instrumental project called Conquering Dystopia) but ultimately was brought in as a second guitarist. Not really utilizing his skills to their fullest here, but I would think next album he will be more involved in the writing of the riffs and solos.
Angela (the original singer) didn't ever sing clean and probably couldn't to my knowledge. Alyssa however DEFINITELY can. She did both cleans and growls in her previous band The Agonist. She has done a few guest vocal spots for other bands where she sang both. And I think there is one song on this album where they let her do cleans. I forget which song it is though.
The "leader" of the band is Michael Amott (and Angela as manager I suppose). But Michael seems to be the real leader. They put Alyssa out for alot of the interviews and such for obvious reasons. But the bulk of the songwriting and music writing is done by Michael.
The band is from Sweden (though Jeff Loomis is American and Alyssa is Canadian) but regardless I highly doubt these guys are millionaires. Metal is not a profitable career. They probably do alright but you don't play metal to make money, thats for damn sure.
Figured Sori would like this one.

Michael Amott who is the guitarist with the red hair, he’s the de facto leader. Arch Enemy exists because he was approached by a Japanese label asking him for a continuation of his work with Carcass. Another great band. He is typically the bands mouthpiece in interviews alongside Angela and Alissa. However Angela was and still is the bands manager. So there’s that.

One of the songs that got me into the band not long ago as I discovered melodic death metal. Alissas voice 😍 Alissas looks 🤩
"War Eternal" & "The Eagle Flies Alone" one day!
Alissa's normal voice is beautiful btw. There's one song where she's switching between, but that growl is the style of Arch Enemy. Alissa has a more deeper voice than Angela. If Sori doesn't enjoy Alissas voice then she definitely won't enjoy Angelas. Alissas is actually the more "ear friendly" and easier to understand of the two. I have no trouble with the understanding Alissa and I just got into death metal like 3 months ago.

I really liked Arch enemy back when they did Wages of sin (like 20 years ago) and Angela was the singer. Now I think they are just generic and cheesy with some of the worst lyrics in metal. Sad to see Jeff Loomis from Nevermore wasted in this band.

I disagree with you. I think Alissa is a better vocalist even though I did like Angela. Lyricswise I think their lyrics are great. Sure ther is better lyrics out there in metal but far more worse than Arch Enemy. It's an difficult art to master to write lyrics. Lommis is a good fit to AE and I thinl he will contribute more and more, after all it's his first studio effort with the band.

It really is a shame is it not? Wages of Sin was one of my favourite albums during highschool, the band had such insane potential and though I must admit imo they never reached the very peak I believed they could have, it just worked so well. Now, Jeff Loomis is amazing, Amott is clearly as fantastic of a guitarist as he has always been, Alyssa (though very different from Angela) is incredibly talented... and it doesn't work. Not for me at least.

There's absolutely no point in analysing lyrics written by Michael Ammot. Dude just throws a bunch of clichés at the wall and sees which ones stick. Arch Enemy are nothing on what they used to be. And it's nothing on Alyssa either. She's good, but not as fantastic as she's been made out to be by metal journalists recently either. The creativity in the writing slipped when Chris left, as Khaos Legions was equally as poor as the last two releases.

Chris wrote some of the music on Khaos Legions, though. And he co-wrote Reason To Believe on the new one, which is probably the worst/most bland song I've ever heard from them (that's not just because of the clean vocals, although part of it). But yes, I agree. They were way better up until Tyrant. At least there are Armageddon and Nonexist to hold the torch, I encourage you to check them out, if you haven't already.
