    Great podcast ! Maybe a future episode on Weiss watches, about the company and a deeper look at the different movements Cameron offers !

    Honestly, I enjoyed this podcast far more than expected. It was like a... Podcast-documentary. Those astronomical time pieces were kickass.

    Loving the podcasts so far, hope you don't run out of ideas for episodes anytime soon. It seems Cameron becomes more and more talkative and enthusiastic as the episodes progress.

    Learning a lot from these podcasts! The 24 hrs on the astrological clock seemed to represent which hour of the day time it was... with the first hour “1” at dawn and hour 12 or 13 being sunset

    Really enjoying the series so far, especially as a watch newbie. I'm learning a ton. Is there a possibility to improve the overhead camera? The resolution seems really low

    • @WatchAndListenPodcast
      @WatchAndListenPodcast  6 лет назад +2

      The problem is there isn't really an "overhead projector" camera that I know of. There are regular cameras, and then there are microscope cameras. We are using a microscope camera, but it's WAY too zoomed in at the normal level, so we raised it up. That kinda messes up the resolution. I am looking for another solution for that angle.

    Can't wait for the show on escapements. There are lots of animated tutorials on the web. Maybe you could show animations as you talk about each escapement? The quad-tourbillion is a mind blower!

    I have ripped through 4 episodes today and can't wait for more episodes. I was already getting into this hobby about a year ago but now that I'm actually collecting some since I've learned a little more about what's what. This is too easy of a hobby to get rooked out of good hard earned money if you don't know what you are looking at.

    I wold love to see an old watchmaker release a collection based off of the world most famous clock towers. Imagine that clock from Prague but scaled down into a watch? I think that would make a beautiful and unique collection

    Suggestions:
    There appears to be a lot of shaking in the main shot, perhaps you could place it on its own separate solid object or tripod.
    I might also suggest changing the main shot to a wider shot on the opposite wall looking back at the desk, or moving the desk to the opposite wall. While I realize that means the Mac or mics might ruin the shot, you could use a large TV on the wall as a monitor.
    Microscope cam is great, however its image quality is abysmal. It seems in the first 4 episodes you probably don't need it for the content that has been shown. Maybe use a decent DSLR with a macro lens for a better shot?
    You guys need some sweet horological wall art to round this out.
    Otherwise, this podcast is great. Keep of the wonderful work guys. I know I'll be a lifelong subscriber!

      Thanks for the tips; we actually have some interesting constraints to work with in this studio - Wirecast will not allow cameras to work if those cameras are using extension cables. Therefore we are limited by the length of the cable between computer and camera. I know, this sounds really dumb, but that is a legit thing. We can probably move it to its own separate stand not attached to the desk, but it can't be on the opposite wall.
      For the microscope camera quality, I ordered 4 cameras, and this was the best of the 4. If you know of another USB camera that works better for this, I am 100% open to suggestion. Otherwise I'm just going to keep looking and hopefully find something.

    • @willsdabeast
      @willsdabeast 6 лет назад

      I totally get that there are probably a million things you guys had to figure out with a million different constraints that I could never be aware of. I truly think you are doing awesome work, and I can't wait for the next batch of episodes. Main cam on its own separate stand would be great.
      Re microscope cam, I should have been more clear. I don't think you should replace it, I know from other watch related channels (check out Long Island Watch's "Watch and Learn" series if you haven't already), that it's certainly a valuable asset when getting a good shot of tiny movement pieces, so don't replace it. Maybe use a higher quality regular camera for the overhead shots. As most of what Cameron has thrown up under there so far doesn't necessarily need the microscopic abilities of what you have now. Then break out micro cam for the really tiny pieces. Again, I'm sure there are lots of things I'm not aware of that might not make this possible, but just thought I would throw it out there.
      Thanks again for all the hard work and quality content!

      Update: I found a camera designed to be used for professors as overhead projectors, rather than microscopes. It's got auto-focus and its own light source. We will have that in studio in time for the recording of Episode 6 (I think). We can use the microscope camera for the tiny stuff and this new one for just regular watch shots.

    Guys, just a bit of correction: on the EOS watch the two long hands actually show time of sunrise and sunset (calibrated to a specific location). The equation of time is actually shown on the small scale below the date.

    Matt & Cameron & all, want to learn more about the time zones Why & When? Check out the book "Einstein's Clocks and Poincare's Maps
    : Empires of Time" by Peter Galison. Fascinating and easy to now understand why time zones were made from sailing around the world to the expansion of the railroad. Thanks for the video podcast. I am marathoning now!

  • @gedavids84
    @gedavids84 6 лет назад +1

    So times zones were created when trains really became a thing. Before that point in history, it hadn't really been necessary for clocks to not be solar mean because people couldn't so quickly cover large distances.

    the waterclock is actually way more sophisticated than it looks, if the bowl fills up once a day at a convenient time then you always pay attention to it going up to emptying the bowl and 'winding the clock' for the day and markings on the bowl show the hour and approx minute of the day if all the bowl owners synchronised their bowls with a reference then everyone had the same time so it is a true clock

    First waterproof/water-resistant watch was actually not a Rolex...common old wives tale. Even Omega had a dive watch before Rolex. See this link for more info: www.vintagewatchstraps.com/waterproof.php
    Unfortunately, fanboys and even Christie's perpetuate this myth.
