  • In this episode, Cameron and Matt lay out the "Watchmaking Family Tree," that is, the web of parent, subsidiary, and supplier companies that make up the Swiss watch industry. Richemont, LVMH, Swatch Group, and Kering control the majority of the Swiss watch market, but how did that happen and why? We explore the familial resemblenece between completely different watches built under the umbrella of the same groups. Additionally, Cameron and Matt fill out their Crown & Caliber "Watch Madness" brackets.

    This may be a bit out there, but a tour of the Weiss factory/workshop or perhaps a tour of a big watch factory/workshop would be cool.

    Great video! I love the history of the Swiss Watch Industry. The period after the quartz "crisis" is especially very interesting. I was in college in the early 90's and a Submariner (not a Submariner Date) cost was going for 2800.00 at 210 Post Street in SF. That was a lot of money back then, and so most people my age bought an Omega, Breitling or TAG Heuer. They almost all had ETA 2824, ETA 2892, or 7750 Valjoux. Lots of different cases with the same motor. Original 60's Heuer Chronograph's second hand in excellent condition cost you maybe 500.00 (Before E Bay).
    Prices have definitely increased. The hobby has definitely changed.
    Question for you guys for another video:
    Does the Swiss Watch Industry have a future? Will the Industry grow? What is the overall health of the industry?

    Another great show. Thanks guys! Can't wait to see what Weiss has to offer in the future. I'm hoping for something in the sub 40 mm size range and something to get away from the field watch formula. The field watch is great, but I want something new to lust for! Of course, the more American made, the better.

    Loving the podcast just as I do with The Smoking Tire/One Take! Do a show about the Japanese watch companies: Seiko (Grand Seiko, Lorus, Pulsar, Orient), Citizen (now owns Bulova & FC/Alpina), Casio and combine it with a segment on the awesome micro brand segment!

    You bring up an interesting point about the $500 to $1000 watch show. You'd have to snag a shit ton of watches because your sponsor doesn't work with that price range. It is an interesting cheap watch range. Since frankly that's going to be the next level of watch I'm starting to look at. I liked this episode. I really didn't know the architecture of these organization until this. I'm learning similar to you. My brother bought a Shinola Runwell Chrono a while ago as I was starting to get into watches. I really admired it but questioned the pricing and dodgy nature of the company's marketing. "Be honest god dammit and price your watches for what they are!", kept coming to mind. I would argue that my reproduction Seiko SSA289J1 Helmet nato strap is nicer and my Invicta S1 Rally (48mm watches are ugly huge on me) is so similar that it's sad that he paid almost 5 times as much. Thanks to r/Watches for the relevant things that can be learned from a big collective of watch geeks. Keep them coming Matt, I'm ready for the next episode.

    • @WatchAndListenPodcast
      @WatchAndListenPodcast  6 лет назад

      Thanks! and TRUE about Shinola. The money they charge will get you into a very nice, automatic Seiko, which is a much better watch from a functional perspective, as well as getting "in the club" of watch guys, which a Shinola won't do.

    How about an episode on attainable "Grail" watches? This might sound stuck up, but not trying to be. Maybe grail watches sub 100k? Definitely doable for an enthusiast to save up for and maybe treat oneself as a retirement or major milestone gift. I would be curious to see what other people list after. For me, it would be a Lange Datograph Annual

    • @throwingdartsandbreakinghearts
      @throwingdartsandbreakinghearts 5 лет назад

      100k is attainable? If u can spend 100k, u can spend 500k. That's 0.001% of the population. Not really attainable. Sub $25000 is more attainable for the middle class. And even that is pushing it

    How does the movement affect the price of the watch? Does in house movement vs a more used/“universal” ETA movement affect the price and quality of the watch? Is one better than the other? For instance, when looking at some older base model Panerai Radiomir watches they seem to base their movement on an ETA movement, but then call it their OP X movement. Now they have in house movement such as their P.5000 calibre, but yet they seem to cost the same even on the used market for the older Radiomir models with ETA.

  • @mattwasilewicz9677
    @mattwasilewicz9677 6 лет назад

    An important independent that I think should have been mentioned is H Moser. Often overlooked, but they are intense with their in house manufacturing, even the springs....

    I agree with everything Cameron had on his Watch Madness... minus the Weiss beating the Cartier. Too bad there weren't any Seiko / Grand Seiko (would have put a Seiko Marinemaster 300) on there.

    Episode (or part of one) on where to get trusted watch accessories? Good quality non OEM NATO/Leather straps? Buckles/Deployment clasps? Stickers for your car about what kind of watch you own... jk jk. Saw the watch winders the previous episode have a bidirectional winder that you can set the number of revolutions to do daily and it'll intermittently run, happy with that thing, pretty quiet too.

    • @WatchAndListenPodcast

      We think the connection between cars and watches is super obvious, but don't really like when it's too on-the-nose. So the Rolex Daytona being named after a race track, that's cool. But the "Breitling for Bentley," is too much and cheeseball. The watches that look like ripoffs of tachometers, just....no.

    Have been a silent listener of the almost all of the TST podcasts, which I am sad to see you step away from. Love the new channel as well, though. For a cheap watch $400 or so, I love the Citizen and Seiko pilot watches with the E6B slide rules that are basically cheap versions the Breitling. You could do a segment on these and bring in a pilot nerd guy to explain all of the cool navigations/fuel burn calculations that these watches enable

    Even if we don't want to be snobbish about watch names, please don't say "Glasshoot" because this means Glass debris in german (and Glashütte is a german word), Just seperate the word after Glas, thats how it would sound... hütte = hut (in german hut is also the word for the workshop where glass or metal is made)

      Hi! Welcome to podcasting. Thanks for stopping by. The ads are 3 minutes, 56 seconds covering 1 hour, 29 minutes of free content, approximately half of what you'd find with the world's most successful podcasts like JRE and WTFPod. We put those ads right up front for you, making it very user friendly. You might also notice the fact that there are no RUclips ads, at all. This is to improve the user experience.
