  • In this episode, Cameron and Matt explore the world of complicated watches. A complication is any function that a mechanical watch performs besides simply displaying the time, such as a chronograph, or, most commonly, a date window. We start with the basics and then show advanced annual and perpetual calendar complications, check out the "Master of Complication" Franck Muller's bizarre watches, the new Rolex Skydweller, the incredible JLC Duometre that is really two watches in one, and a Memovox mechanical alarm watch! We also discuss how moon phase complications work, "minute repeater" chiming watches, and the half-million dollar Grand Complication watches that can only be serviced by the one person who made them.

    this is a great watch focused youtube channel. i like that it involves a watchmaker instead of just a watch lover. there are many watch channels but this might be the best. please keep the focus on movements and the technical side while also reviewing all levels of watches not just the super high end even though the super high end is so much fun to see. i like finding those great jems under $1000 or even better under $500 that have real quality behind them. thanks for the videos.

    I have found my favorite traveler watch [Reference @ 34min] (Not as pricey as most). Citizen World Perpetual A-T (model CB0160-51L). 1) I never run out of battery while traveling [Eco-Drive]; 2) I never lose seconds as it auto re-corrects fast/slow to Atomic Clock broadcast pulses [A-T]; 3) easy time zone adjust forward or back, with no seconds loss, auto hack advance in hour increments while maintaining constant time.
    And it looks pretty dope. Thanks again for allowing us to sit in on your conversations. Love it.

    Loving the new podcast Matt. Each episode the production is getting tighter and the conversation is always interesting. Really looking forward to where it will go.
    Especially enjoyed this complication episode since you guys spent enough time with each watch to get a real sense of it. Seeing how various complicated watches are set was fascinating, especially the skydweller.
    Any chance Cameron would spend some time on some of his more interesting watchmaking tools? His caseback opening tool was very cool and I'd love to see what other specialized tricks of the trade he might have.
    Hearing Cameron talk about Hamilton getting more power from the eta 2824 sparked a curiosity. I have heard about the wizardry Richard Habring was able to do with the valjoux 7750 for iwc by making it into a manual wound split second chrono, but I'm wondering if there are other similar stories. The in house movement migration would be a great topic on its own, but I find stories of people getting machines to do things they were never intended for great

    Are we still using the same materials for the mainspring as years past? I'm wondering if using a different mainspring material could give you the power required to make these complications a bit easier to power/run.

    Top tip if you overset a complication that takes a long time to get all the way around (even a non-quickset date I'll do this)
    Just leave it out of the winder and let it stop for a day or tree.. My Vostok I'm waiting for the 10th to turn up (today's the 7th) and then I'll set it and wear it a couple days cause its too much hazzle to turn the crown 28 days forward. (and yea, I know the vostok can be quickset by going to 2 and then back to 22 but thats a hazzle as well...

    I thought the reason for the 2 moons was to show both northern and southern hemispheres moon crescents as they are opposites.

    I am a firm believer in owning watches that I can use. For example, I don't travel enough to be able to justify a GMT function, so none of my watches contain a GMT function. The same goes for moon phase and perpetual calendar. Complication for the sake of complication annoys me to no end ... HOWEVER, from a "watchmaking" standpoint, I LOVE excessive complication and appreciate the art of complication as a showcase for a watchmaker's talent and ingenuity. But, as I'm a simple man with simple pleasures (ruclips.net/video/tIZ43V-3puc/видео.html), I'll stick to my chronographs and day/date watches ... although the Memovox and Vulcain Cricket are the pretty f'ing dope.

    Question! When you set the date, doe the mechanism jump a day and if you are in PM it'll remain in PM or does it jump to AM the first click and then you have to set it up? Because until now I have always set the date to the day before, and advance the time until I'm on the same date and time.

    • @thewatchmakersworkshop
      @thewatchmakersworkshop 6 лет назад +1

      If the hands are in pm then they will remain in pm even after the date is advanced with quick set. I always set the date to the previous day and then advance the hands until the date jumps, so I know I get the AM/PM setting correct too.

      It`s like saying a 2 stroke isn`t *less* complicated than a 12 cylinder, that`s clickbait.
      LESS complicated is LESS complicated, even though they`re all complications..
      "This engine has a less complicated, more efficient turbo" OOH CLICKBAIT, it`s still an add-on to the engine so it can`t be less complicated..

    So technically to set the moon phase you could figure out the date of the new moon. Then calculate how many days it has been since the new moon. You then move the moon phase to where you can not see the moon(i.e. new moon), then if it's been 12 days since the new moon, you would click/press the moon phase advance 12 more times or 12 days. Set the date and time current. No need to advance the hour hands for days on end.

    • @thewatchmakersworkshop
      @thewatchmakersworkshop 6 лет назад +2

      This also depends on the watch. Many moon phases advance more than one tooth per day and will need to be advanced accordingly. As an example, if you know the moon phase of your watch advances 2 times per day (the case for many astronomical moon phase complications), then you would double the days between the current date and the last full or new moon. Where that gets tricky is that you also need to know at what two times during the day the moon phase jumps. Otherwise you could easily end up 1/2 day off on the moon phase setting. Still close enough for most haha.
