Mike is 3 hours away from me
There is a capoeira kick that You can use if You fail with the dragón tail sweep . But never use the dragón tail sweep . I only see it done once and it was in a match and I jump and kick the guy in the face . It was a tkd match and I lost because I broke the guys nose . It was a inner dojo competicion so only light contact was allowed
I gave you an mma fight example of when it’s worked
sweeps are so underused and it's the perfect way to punch mistakes
I'm glad to see Dark Souls rolling is becoming accepted as a means of defense in reality.
Exactly! 😂😂

I am not not sure why I can't stop laughing after seeing the roll🤣🤣
😂
Chubby surpise roll
"That one guys who has notifications on just to dislike my video" *video has one dislike after 1 hour*
Exactly lmao
Probably was Icy Mike himself 🤣🤣
I personally don't even use it as an option. If I dislike a video or a channel I just don't bother. But the fact that there are individuals who want to be notified of a channel uploading just so they can do that. Man, some people need to get SIDE KICKED by reality
@@ellisv3068 I've been using youtube pretty much since it's inception, and I still have never in my life disliked a video. If I don't like a video I just click away. And I have seen some stupid fucking videos on this platform lol
@@Koshmar-13 haha i also have a lotbof time using youtube. I do have disliked videos, but i think that they have only been 2, or perhaps 3
I love this technique, I was very surprised to see this. I think the danger in this technique is that it's more powerful than other sweeps and can very easily put somebody almost totally upside down. It's a similar effect as when a skateboard shoots out from under somebody suddenly and their legs fly up in the air, you can't really break that kind of a fall. It's a fun technique though, I love training it
That’s a fair point!

What do you mean, you can totally break that kind of fall lol!!
Doing that is even part of some Judo drills, the important thing when break falling is mostly you head and what you do with your arms
An interesting thing is that Icy Mike got caught with this when he was sparring Sergio Perez (without gloves.) Sergio used it as a counter to a high kick. awesome video!! Super dope tutorial.
Thanks bud!
Oh yeah ! I definitely remember that. I thought it was so cool. I never thought this kind of sweep would be applicable in actual combat. But that guy’s timing was just excellent. I’ve actually been meaning to try this move against live resistance. To see how strong this sweep really is.
I feel like I’m watching two gamers lab in Street Fighter.
😂😂😂
Accurate lol
So... are either your or Mike or both of you going to do an episode demonstrating how to "break fall" properly and safely?
Sure! I’ll do one soon 👍
@@SenseiSeth Still waiting for that break fall safely vidro
@@rewrose2838 me too dude
@@SenseiSeth Seth please I’ve taken so many double legs w/o break falls I need the video
Shoulder rolls have been the most useful thing I ever learnt in martial arts. Programmed into me in Judo and then Jiujitsu as a kid. I hated practicing break falls because they seemed boring. I never reached a high level in any martial art, I stopped completely, then decades later:
1) Motorbike accident, jumped off the bike just before hitting a tree, shoulder rolled up on to my feet with no injury.
2) On my bike, head on collision with a car, had enough time to think "oh this is where my life is ruined", and then shoulder rolled over the car and landed on my feet without an injury.
Happened without thought, after not training for an age, automatic, the exact technique I was taught, I couldn't believe it. Definitely had a lot of luck in there too, I am sure, but I can't think of anything else that has got me out of as much trouble.
Hmm. The real important part of the technique obviously missing: Someone who says "Sweep the leg, Johnny!"
hahaha get him a body bag for sure
No mercy
Appreciating the keeping us busy during lockdown. Love the sensei seth icy mike dynamic when u guys collab!
Thanks!! Happy to help ya unwind lol
Great vid! Respect for naming the time Clements landed this on Wonderboy -- one of the few times someone was able to (briefly) out-ninja Thompson. Ferguson also landed it on Gaethje during their bout at UFC 249.
For those who are curious, Thompson also released a video a while back about the dragon tail sweep that's worth a watch.
Somebody else mentioned the Ferguson thing too!
I once did a shoulder roll to get out of danger after a swing and miss lol
And that big dude @4:38 is motivation to anyone!!!!🤯 Beverly hills Ninja lookin ass boi! Lmao
Hahahaha
3:21 Well that was how my first day of wrestling was. "Oh hey, it's your first day? Here's a really big double leg coming right up."
😂😂😂
I love that you are testing techniques that seem impossible and try to make them work! I honestly never considered that technique as only saw it on movies but it seems like it could work.
Shit always works. I've never seen it fail. Thanks as always!
Just gotta commit! Lol
This is little brother stuff that he uses when you're play fighting that infuriates you and escalates into a real fight because it works
Hahaha exactly
Huh, so you guys call it dragon tail. In spanish I was taugh to call it "Cola de Lagarto" (GATOR's tail)
That’s sick!
Marvin Zegarra in my karate training we used to call it a spinning cobra
@@Bfolks84 What's a martial art without cool names? XD
Thanks for the cameo appearance. Although I was called “somebody “ lol
Dude...ngl. I was wondering if this tiger/dragon tail sweep, really does work in self defence or MMA. I thought I'd ask you in your next live stream of smth but hey...LOOK at that u dedicated a full video to it. Loving the coincidence! Anyways this should be fun.
Im reading your mind
I like this technique. Aesthetic wise it does look good especially with that evasive roll afterwards, and it can be effective too when timed properly. Will catch an opponent off-guard.
👍👏
I think places teach shoulder rolls also because they get you used to falling and spinning around / getting disoriented. I know people who I try to teach them to find it a huge confidence booster as they go from being terrified and flopping down onto their shoulder into flinging themselves forward and recovering gracefully, and their other breakfalls seem to be more confident after, too.
I teach them for “worst case scenarios” haha but they’re way more useful than that!
Shoulder rolls saved my life. I was riding my bike to work and switched sides of the road for an upcoming left turn. I was on the shoulder but there was a high curb, so I was waiting for a spot where I could get off the road. Just after I got to the wrong side of the road a big rig decided it would be fun to play chicken with me and drifted over on to the shoulder where I was riding. I had to shoulder roll over the high curb with my bike to avoid getting flattened.
I swear you guys should do a comedy/martial arts educational stage routine!
haha like Master Ken?

That spin kick at the very beginning. Love it!
Haha thanks!
Thank you for this! This is one of those underrated moves that actually works - I've seen it done, I've had it done to me... but I never managed to make it work for myself
Hope it helps!!!
i think that bjj we practice forward rolls for te mobility aspect so you can better escape kimuras or do some crazy rolling stuff that they use in te sport bjj
Totally necessary in all aspects of fighting imo
Been waiting while for the dragon tail sweep. Flawless Victory.

Love the actual fight clips. Tony's hilarious.
He’s something else lol
I really love your vids.. keep up man! You have such an amazing content♥
Will do my best!
That's a real slick set up!!
I've only ever seen this technique used once and it was the best thing I've ever seen.
This is actually perfect for capoeira ground kicks and trips to incorporate in MMA
recently re-started martial arts meself, and setting up a sweep like this fires me up even more
Great job Icy Seth and Sensei Mike!
Hahahaha thanks!
When my sensei taught me this technique it took a while to understand it but with practice is was able to, i might have a gift for learning martial arts very quickly
Love the new vid man.
Thanks bud
Our kempo style has a “compressed wheel kick” where you spin in a side kick chamber, you could also do that from the range that the other person doesn’t back up.
Fair point!
That's a really nice technique. I only used for real once against a tkd guy. He was doing the same kick over and over so, it was just look for the other leg. He fell really bad on his back, but he didn't hurt and I was surprised that it worked
Great video Sensei ⚡👍
Glad you enjoyed!
I just started watching Mike and you and like what your doing. Looking at the clock on the wall looks like you guys are having a productive lunch break! LOL :)
Hahaha you know it!! 😂😂
Also, thanks for watching!
Good move very risky to miss. Got the standing one once on a friend definitely a high five moment.
As for shoulder rolls. I can name a few reasons in jujitsu. Both warm up you neck and shoulder for stacks. I personally love bow and arrow. Rolling bow and arrow choke is even more fun. Most rolling techniques that I can think of off hand are gi moves. However if your being stacked heavily during your armbar you can invert into belly down and that why we do backwards shoulder rolls. Ideally building the instinct that if you get in trouble there is an option. There are also some escapes you can do with rolls.
Love the channels guys keep it up
If you do Judo, you know why the roll is practiced. The reason you roll is to practice breaking a fall as you're thrown over someone's back. For example, if you are thrown with O Goshi or Seoi Nage.
Super sweet as always :)
Thanks!
tony fergusons rolls are legendary
That’s the truth
I will try it
Reasons to get good at rolls: Most of us are going to slip and fall in everyday life more than we fight.
Good breakfalls and rolls have saved me from a lot of bad footing injuries dozens of times. Especially running in winter or in the rain.
I HAVE A GROUND MOST OFTHE TIME
I catch this all the time against opponents that throw telegraphed high round kicks. Imagine a high to mid level right round kick from the opponent, you take a small side ways jag step with the left leg (to insure the sweep has good follow through), drop down under the round kick, and execute the dragon tail sweep with your right leg and catch them in the back of their support leg. You totally have to try it! You'll love how well it works!
I trained this, my coach used to say to me if you miss go straight to a single leg, works every time nj. Also if your quick its a good head kick counter, when they kick u go down and take out the leg.
These rolls are actually pretty impressive
I was taught the double sweep version of this as a teen. Taught it to my friend. While sparring he took me down with the first then kicked me in the teeth with the second. In the correct situation it works.
oof lol!
Awesome (rip tho)
I love the minecraft music in the background. Perfect
If I miss this, I'm going to my back.
Edit: You guys are the Jay and Silent Bob of combat sports at this rate.
😂😂
"That one guy that has my notifications on just to dislike the video, I'm coming for you" and I'll be waiting LoL but seriously I'd love the chance to spar with either of the top martial arts channels
Interesting.👍
🙏🙏
Shoulder rolls can be valuable. Good to practice for self awareness on the ground. I also used one to get my foot free and turn to my opponent when I was getting my butt whooped in a wrestling match and could not stand up.
This is pretty cool looking
And fun too
Saw a kid do this in school when I was about 12, it was amazing. Lol. His dad was a martial arts instructor
At 4:19 you can martelo do Chao. A kick from the floor in capoeira. Lateef Crowder does it in a fight science t.v show.
I think I’ve seen that show 👏
I dunno how I missed this video. But we do a lot of dragon tail sweeps in kung fu, and last night I was like, "Huh, is this shit actually useful?" After watching a few clips, I realized you had a video about it. Sick!
This video was awesome. Just 2 guys having fun 🙏
Just bro’s being dudes! Lol
Brilliant 👍
Tony ferguson love the shoulder roll lol
😂
I always love your videos, Seth. IcyMike's... not so much. Sorry Mike, it's not personal (cuz I don't know ya; but you seem like a fun guy). I tried to get behind them, I really did. The enthusiasm is there with Mike. The knowledge not so much. I'm afraid he'll get someone hurt with some of what he teaches. But Seth? Listen to the man. KNOWLEDGE.

Time travel back to 1993. I was 16 and had only been practicing martial arts for 7 years or so; just some Isshin Ryu karate they teach kids, and also a lot of books looking at other styles of karate and other martial arts. Kung Fu's animal styles had me mesmerized, and sweep kicks were one of the things I practiced a lot because I thought they were cool. A large part of that was this "dragon's tail" demonstrated in the video. I'm 43 now, so a good bit more experience (~30 years). I still think the dragon's tail is cool af, even if on the surface it doesn't seem practical. Glad to see the video.
------
Some tips from me on this move:
------
This is a power move meant to plow through your target's leg; it is not a striking kick. Seth is striking with his heel and back of his calf, but if you connect with your lower thigh or back of your knee they will still 100% go down. You can use this sweep in pretty close, and it actually has more authority when you can hook the arch of your knee onto the target's leg because now you can manipulate the target's balance to ensure they fall. More than once I have "failed the sweep" and just wrenched their leg out from under them with mine by just bending my knee and hooking it out from under them by force. You can make people go down with this sweep. It doesn't fail much except at maximum reach. The main reason is that your dragon's tail is supposed to hit both of the target's legs, not just the lead leg. Your thigh catches the front leg and your calf/heel catches the other.
------
When the sweep fails AND the hook fails, you still have the leg scissor. Your other leg extends to trip, and you just roll. Your sweeping leg presses behind the target's knees, and they might still go down. They will fall onto their knees and then post onto their hands and/or elbows. In a brawl this puts you into position, as you retract your legs under you, to kick them in either the loose ribs or the side of the head (which you should only do if your life is in danger; this can kill a person). You can use the kick to go into the roll away to get up, and you actually get more oomph in your roll away compared to kicking off the ground.
------
You can connect with the target's shins with this kick. It works from that side too. Your thigh catches one shin and your calf/heel catches the other. When sweeping from this side you want to aim low, right above the ankle or even on the ankle if you can. It is REALLY important to keep your knee bent when sweeping from this side, and to pivot onto your stomach to post after the target starts to collapse. You are knocking their feet out. They are going straight down, landing on their knees. You are trying to avoid taking one of their knees to the side of yours. Sweeping from this side on concrete ends fights. When somebody plants 80-90% of their body weight on whatever knee hits the ground first, that knee is not OK. The person will not have any fight left in them.
------
On grass, a dragon's tail sweep is REALLY easy to make work. We are used to traction. But in grass you have none, even with reasonably good shoes on. This move was created a long time ago, back when we didn't have rubberized high-traction soles and practice mats that absorb sweat to help us keep our footing. If you find yourself getting jumped in the park and need to get away, suddenly dropping levels to sweep the mugger's legs gets around the main obstacle to fighting back (his weapon) ensures he can't easily grab you since you are so low to the ground, and it also sets you to roll away while he is prone. Just take off running. If the sweep went especially well they won't even be in condition to chase. It's obviously not "the recommended move" for such a scenario, but it should be in your quiver.
i saw this land on an amateur kickboxing match somewhere on youtube. Surreal
If you miss, you are not in a bad position- just an unusual one. If they're close you circle all the way around, lunge, and go for a single leg snatch and roll. If they jump off to one side it wont make a difference. If they go straight back you can actually make a third trip attempt with the same sweep or shift it into a spinning back kick.
This is classic Harimau / Pamonyet style Silat.
If they crowd you on the first sweep- just hook their leg and sit up. You're actually very dangerous in this position provided you're used to it
I heard some quiet Haggstrom Minecraft music in the background 😄
You can go to kanibasami or highcrotch takedown or janga or reverse punch from the knees.
Takedown 👏👏
Nice
Thanks!
Nice video
Thanks!
Im so trying this tonight in class lol
I see other people are talking about the shoulder roll - I'd like to add that you have to know it to survive a lot of throws.
For example, that video of an African woman hitting drop seoi nage on a bigger man, who face-plants and gets knocked out. Plus you can roll out of tripping on stuff, or hitting a bench on your bicycle (like me)
If I miss I usually follow up with a lightning screw uppercut...
I think you can do it if you catch a kick throw it to the side then sweep or you catch it get on one knee let go then sweep or fake a kick so they check then sweep or time it so perfectly when they round house
What about a short stop on a missed sweep into either a pop up or grounded roundhouse kick with the same leg??? 😈😈😈
the fire disciples in SIFU would like a word with you
Still have yet to beat that, on the 4th stage currently
You should totally do that sweep and then do an inner thigh kick, in tricking we have a move called a scoot and it makes an enormous amount of energy because your whole body is behind it but anyways yeah you should so a scoot inner thigh kick
I feel like you're almost close enough to shoot into an imanari roll, which would be legendary.
For a while my school got obsessed with this sweep. We were using it almost every week sparring and none of us knew how to break fall. I got to where i would use it as a counter when my opponent tried a spinning kick at my head.
Fair play!!
= 💪., 🦆!!
I’ve pulled this off in a street fight (and other times too). So listen up kids and I’ll explain the setup:
First - play a lot of mortal kombat
Second - practice on your friends
Third - try to stop a fight
Fourth - defend yourself when it’s turned on you
Fifth and most important - make sure opponent is really drunk
Bonus - strategically circle to the grass off of the concrete because you know you’re going to hit it and you want it to shock them not kill them.
Now you too can pull off the down+B...I mean the dragon tail
People who fight on concrete when grass is right next to them really piss me off lol
Sensei Seth hahaha agreed, if it can be prevented
Look at the torque he puts on his toes! 5:43
Ultimate power
I've done this off of my opponent doing a head kick ducking it and then throwing the sweep. But it was just sparring with someone I knew very well so I could time it.
It's a revers engenwring the spinning wheel kick in tiqundue
Shoulder roll is a valuable skill, especially if you're clumsy.
If they lift that leg up to dodge the sweep you can follow through with the sweep and take them down with a scissor leg technique. Not saying it applies to tournament or anything but it's an available counter.
hahahah but am a huge fan of this technique tho. much love for you guys
From the ground u can use the capoeira kick called Martelo De Chao to flip over in a position u can get up from while throwing a pretty strong kick, that’s just what I think from looking at this, im not sure if it’s work in practice so don’t take my word for it lol
So when in the street should I go for the dragon tail sweep or the flying side kick, because clearly they are the only moves that are viable
Meh, whenever you want. Works whenever
Great vid, Shoulder roll is apparently the fastest way to get up.
The fastest way I could think of 😂
They teach the shoulder roll as the ranger roll when you need to pick a person up with a fireman's carry. It can also be used to dive into a person's knees while protecting the head.

Oh man. I'm watching this and I cant help but feel like if you guys took some capoeira classes, youd have more follow up options to choose from.
And actually, that could be a fun thing you 2 can do together for both your channels. Both of you take capoeira classes that are close to your area. And you'll see a bigger range or mobility. Try it for at least a yr for both of you.
I’m sure we would!! We don’t live near eachother though. I am about 3 hours away
@@SenseiSeth I'm sure theres a school or club near both of you. Could learn separate, and when you do get together, colab what you've learned and what was fun/interesting and might potentially apply to your individual styles.
