    If you leave all the slack on the tensioner side instead of the idler side, the cam lockers won't be the devil. There would also be no 'turn back one tooth' trickery. I don't personally do it this way, but there's more than one way to skin a cat and this is a great tutorial.

    This guy worked on my car a few years ago. He changed my timing belt, tensioner, etc. I actually just had dinner with him last week after not seeing him for years. Sadly, he is out of the 3/S game. Great guy though, he knows his stuff! Wayne rules!

    Thank you! Just got the belt in, buttoning up the rest tomorrow. A note for first timers like me: if your cams are not secured by wrench, lockers or bolts BEFORE you take the old timing belt off, your cam(s) will quickly turn by themselves followed by a loud thunk when you remove the belt. I am hoping I didn't do any damage, cams self-rotating is pretty common from what I have read.

    you must set the initial belt tension correctly, it will jump time eventually. The tensioner only travels about 5mm and if the tension was not set correctly, the tensioner will be at its max travel, and after 200 miles or less, the belt will flop, and jump time. This guy didn't do that right, you need to take the slack out of the non tension side of the belt while adjusting the tensioner pulley, which he did not do, as evidenced by the slack disappearing when he rotated the crank pulley.

    The cam lock method used here is not clear although it is clearly important to be able to lock the cam sprockets.
    Also not clear is how the crank came to be 3 teeth back, when was this setting established, before the cams were bolted in place or afterwards?
    Some insight on how the hyd tensioner works would also have been helpful - it can't "pump up" there is no pressure source>

    now, what do I do if my left side cams are off the marks even though, when I put the belt on and tensioned everything down correctly, they were on the marks???
    I've rotated the crankshaft twice to give the cams a full revolution, and when I went back to the timing mark on the crank, my left side cams weren't timed??? what do I do???

    should have watched this vid before doing the t belt kit on my 3000gt. I've done tons of honda toyota timing belts but first time on a mitsubishi, it wasn't hard by any means but I didn't turn the tensioner pulley enough and there's a lot of slack now. guess I'm pulling everything off again

      M8x1.25x 25or 30 size bolts. I tried it myself and it worked, confirmation from Mr. Hammer: www.3si.org/forum/f1/how-timing-belt-511711/index5.html post #48 and #49. The 30mm length would probably work best.

    whats the purpose of having the crank 1 tooth back. I thought it needs to be aligned?

    • @onizukakimura
      @onizukakimura 9 лет назад +1

      +Christian Avalos If not mistaken the reason why the crank set 1 - 3 tooth back is a safety measure just in case when you slipped the sprocket accidentally and when the cam shaft rotates caused by the spring tension, the valve will hit the piston. This is something you want to prevent when installing a timing belt.
      We normally make sure when working with timing belt to lower all piston from Top Dead Centre (TBC). By the way, I have been working with Mitsubishi 6A12 a lot ... ;)

    • @mikefecht596
      @mikefecht596 8 лет назад +3

      +Onizuka Kimura one tooth behind on the crank is so when you apply the timing belt to the crank it removes the slack from the rear bank upon first rotation.

    Anyone know if I caused damage to my engine? I accidentally left the Cam lockers bolts in when rotating the engine 1/4 turn counterclockwise then clockwise to realign the belt. I did hear a loud clacking noise but I'm hoping it's just the Cam gear hitting against the bolt.

      Check to make sure that you haven't bent a valve. I would be highly surprised if you did not bend some.
