Oh Boy this video reminds me, I've got to get my Timing belt Done on my 1995 KS Verada soon (has the 6G72 SOHC 12 valve 3 litre) it only got done 2 years ago but that was 93,000km ago, I do mine every 100,000km well my mechanic does and he does the FULL MAJOR service cleans the engine, oil, filters, coolant, cleans the injecters etc walked out $1300 ligter last time for the timing belt change and major service the good Old things built for Aussie Conditions
You absolutely cannot jack on the sump / oil pan 2:37. The pan can deform and the oil strainer will get damaged/restricted. Serious engine damage can result from this all too common practise.
@devilslice yes . you are right saying that is wrong turning the cam bolt, and is more difficult for sure (more heavy)!! but if is back is like mine , tottaly fucked up, i understand. because sometimes i do the same job.
@Shazee083 I've been a tech for just under 20 years now, I'm very experienced, VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) trained, and already had 3 understudies who went on from mechanic to tech. I'am very interested in relocating to the U.S and I would appreciate it if you could give me a rough idea what kind of money is out there. The only field i dont have experience of format is auto transmissions as here in the uk they are not popular. Would this be a problem?.. thanks in advance for gettin back to me.
@mrwhtcrckr Thank you for taking the tme to reply to me that was very kind of you. I currently live in Scotland, and at the moment Im paid 10 GBP an hour after tax. Im saving at the minute with a view to relocate to the US possibly early next year. Im sorry to take up anymore of your time my friend, bt could you tell me how the market is for employment in the US is at the moment ? are workshops hire'ing persnell at present, what are my chances of employment?
i got question i purchased 3000gt and timing is off by 4 teeth how can i adjust it? belt is new and previous owner didnt put the belt on right and car hasent been driven since 2012
@mrwhtcrckr I fully indersand where you are coming from my friend, though where Im coming from is 20 years experience on the tools for VW/Audi and they kind of stopped calling 'Techs' 'mechanics' about 10 years or so ago..can you give me an idea what kind of salary should I expect If i deide to relocate to the states??I have a very good name where I come from and my references are from Brand managers and Workshop controllers i have worked with for many years now.
You really should remove this video. If you do not know how to change the timing belt on these cars properly, properly support the motor, or how to read the service manual, you should not be publishing a video "How To". This whole process is completely wrong.
paul harper you never jack or support the oil pan with metal on metal. You use a block of wood on the jack to lift and support the oil pan otherwise you risk denting the oil pan and pickup strainer along with the risk of punching a hole through the oil pan. Also most mechanics I know including myself will always change the cam and crank seals while its apart. Kind of like you always do the rear main seal when removing the transmission.
@@repnatl I'm no mechanic by any measure but this doesn't look right. I do have the service manual from Chrysler and it has way too much information to be told by a short length video. I am mostly inclined to computer engineering where we explain WHY a particular process in in place. I liked the service manual explanation just wanted to see who has done this and how long it actually takes but I haven't find the right video. I learned here so far is that there are 3 hidden bolts under the motor mount. Also, that the water pump I bought may not be for the RT/Twin Turbo as by the looks either this car is not RT/TT or my new pump is for the wrong model.
C clamp the tensioner and put a pin in the hole. However I would replace it with a new belt. I did this job without cam locking gears and it was hell on earth!
***** After a 60K service was done to my car ('95 Mitsubishi GTO/3000GT DOHC), the timing marks were all aligned and the belt was tight. I turned the engine one full revolution, manually through the crank and everything was still aligned. After I started the car and decided to take it for a test drive, I got into problems. What happened was that the car was idling fine and rolling forward in "D" (it's an auto trans), but as soon as I placed my foot on the gas pedal, the car shut off. I never heard any unusual sounds. After I took off the timing belt covers, I noticed that the timing belt felt loose in the area where it goes around the water pump pulley. I thought that the belt needs to be tight, so I started playing with the belt to see how loose it really was. As I was doing that, I felt one of the cam gears spun under the belt. I took the belt off (I was able to do it by hand without much trouble) and tried to rotate the cam gears by hand. The gears were able to be moved a little bit back and forth by hand. That made my friend conclude that I have bent valves, because he thinks that the cam gears should not be able to budge by hand. What do you think is the case? Do I need to do a leak down test to find out if I bent the valves or is there another way to determine that? Thank you!
i can't believe you re turning motor by cams. No way.... Gets to marks throught turning CLOCKWISE the crank pulley. starting wrong, ending wrong. sorry.
Never I mean never rotate the motor from the cams ....that's a interference motor not smart at all .not to mention that belt almost slipped when u first started to rotate it fro the cam

I used to do these all day when I was 16 and worked for Mitsubishi. Bad practice though turning engine over by cam.

Bent the crap out of the oil pan and bent the inner timing cover plate. Good job
I like how you say everything is "real simple"....no man, it's not simple to the average joe
great video, but i love the sound of Non-Air tools.
Well done video!
the torgue for the harmonic balancer is 135 to 140 foot lb
They sell the cam locker for $$$ or you can use a bolt and nut to hold them in place
for a fraction of the cost.
But good vid though, except for the jack on the oil pan.
@devilslice yes . you are right saying that is wrong turning the cam bolt, and is more difficult for sure (more heavy)!! but if is back is like mine , tottaly fucked up, i understand. because sometimes i do the same job.
do you recommend to replace the camshaft seals? it was not depicted in this video. I must say it is not easy changing the timing belt on this one
you should not be turning the cam bolt to line up the marks, use the crank.
How do you use the crank if the cams arent aligned?

No locking tool for the cams?
on 6:45 you should have put some petrolateum or petroleum jelly on that o-ring for a better seal.
Whats the average weekly wage for a good experienced Vehicle Technician (Mechanic) in the USA ?

nice explain
do you have to line up the crank??? Im a first timer.
i got question i purchased 3000gt and timing is off by 4 teeth how can i adjust it? belt is new and previous owner didnt put the belt on right and car hasent been driven since 2012
I'm trying to find out how to do a timing ADJUSTMENT, but I can't find anything on that! Just belt replacement.
Srry 3 teeth btdc an u can spin the cams freely without interference. 1 tooth btd for timing
have been made
Thank You
que modelo de auto es este.??

How to clasp timing belt tensioner
C clamp the tensioner and put a pin in the hole. However I would replace it with a new belt. I did this job without cam locking gears and it was hell on earth!

@calistofox ? His back is fucked up?
Not trying to be a smart a$% but if I`don't have a car to fix how can i get the hands on by watching a video thanks for the videos though
you barely started and you already sounded TIRED!!!!! breathing so heavily just removing the belt. haha get in shape bro
snapon ftw!!!

starting wrong, ending wrong. sorry.
I’m gonna guess book time calls for 3.5 hours? Man that’s a cluster fuck lol
All's u got to do is Dance Dance
You're spinning the engine by the cam, even with the plugs still in place? That's a no no
***** you aren't supposed to ever turn the engine with the cam bolt this guy is a hack
@ 7:08 : o lol.
WOW..what kind of mechanics are you?? You never should turn the engine over by the camshaft bolt.. ALWAYS use the crankshaft bolt..
How does one do that if the engines out of time? Like a legit question cause Imma have to do this
lets round the fucken cam bolt,, thats not the way of showing people how to do that. 3.21 it rounds it, can you work on my car and do that.
Bad bad example set by this guy not only turning engine by camshaft bolt but also turning the engine counter clockwise omg
This looks like it's just as big a horses ass as a timing belt on a GM 3.4 DOHC motor.
Never I mean never rotate the motor from the cams ....that's a interference motor not smart at all .not to mention that belt almost slipped when u first started to rotate it fro the cam
