  • After ensuring that the JDM engine was in good working condition I decided to do a 60k maintenance service before installing the engine. In addition to this video, I recommend you read the instruction manual for your vehicle and the online forums as well. This is a very delicate procedure, if done wrong it could damage your engine. I am not responsible for any damages caused, this is just an informative video that hopefully helps you when changing your own timing belt.

    When you’re tightening the tensioner pulley with your tensioner tool, the torque wrench should be set at 7.2 ft lbs / 87 in lbs
    The pulley bolt you can send it home with the impact

    Concise, awesome, exactly what I needed to see. Thank you! Seeing the process done with the engine completely exposed helped me better understand what's happening.

      BioExtract that’s why I did it! Because I couldn’t find a video that had a good view when I was doing it so I decided I could help out by doing one, I’m glad you liked it!

      @@JohnnyGT Well thank you for making it, this did help me! I'm about to do a timing belt & water pump service on my '91 stealth. Can I ask you, how did you know how tight to stretch the timing belt? I'm afraid of missing a tooth or 2 on the camshafts by doing it too loose or to tight. Is there even such a thing as too tight?

    • @JohnnyGT
      @JohnnyGT  5 лет назад

      @@BioExtract just make sure to pull it tight as you wrap it over all gears, and when you're finished, all the timing marks should still be aligned, if one is off it means a tooth is off somewhere and you have to start again. Setting the tension is the difficult part because you have to tighten the tensioner pulley, which tightens the belt, and you have to bolt it down in place at the same time

    • @BioExtract
      @BioExtract 5 лет назад

      Johnny-GT ahh got it. That must be why you have to clamp the belt to the pully’s when you’re setting the tension. Right on man wish me luck! Beautiful work you’ve done on the car, keep it up!

      Mr Short Stuff I don’t know about an FTO, they’re not even sold where I live lol the 3000GT is very tight, usually to work on something, a lot of parts have to be removed first. Every car is different so maybe you wanna check out the FTO forums and see what people say there

    Question, I am currently about to buy a 3000GT that just needs the belt tensioner replaced and a key which I'm ordering from 3SX on a 1992 Base! I wanted to ask, is it possible to replace it without having to take the engine out? Or is it where you'd have to take the engine fully out before being able to replace everything?
    I'm gonna head to harbor freight and get tools and jackstands but do you also think it'd be better if I get a drill like you had to make the ease of replacement/installment and the time it'd take to do this much shorter/easier? Very good video, much needed!

    • @JohnnyGT
      @JohnnyGT  4 года назад

      Jordan Price why does it need just the belt tensioner replaced? Whenever you buy one of these vehicles you should replace the entire kit (timing belt, pulleys, water pump, tensioner) because you never know for certain how old they are.
      If the tensioner failed on that engine, the engine is probably damaged already
      You can do all of this with the engine on.
      The more tools you have, the easier any job will be. 1/2 impact is definitely necessary to remove the crankshaft pulley, or you can also get the special tool that holds the crankshaft pulley in place so it doesn’t turn when you’re trying to remove the bolt with a breaker bar

    Hey man, great video! Question for you: I just did the timing on mine while the engine was on the stand, did you ever see it where the cam sprocket marks were aligned, but the cranskhaft mark was slightly (maybe 1/4 tooth space) off from the crankshaft pulley mark? Mine didn't ever align as nicely as yours did, even after revolving the crankshaft many times. Buddy of mine thinks it's a manufacturing defect on the placement of the mark and that it's fine, what do you think?

    • @JohnnyGT
      @JohnnyGT  5 лет назад

      flamewulfe if you have all cams aligned but the crankshaft isn’t, it more than likely means your timing is wrong, you’re going to have to remove the belt and time it again

    • @flamewulfe
      @flamewulfe 5 лет назад +1

      @@JohnnyGT Well, the strange thing is, I re did it several times; when it's a tooth off, it's massively off like you'd expect, but when I "got" it, it kept going right back to this slightly off picture. But yeah, I may try and set it again; could it be a warped belt, I wonder?

    I love the video. My timing jumped and for some reason no mechanics 2ant to touch my car :( i have to do myself, to you have to loosen anything in order to reallign cams as you did at 03:31?

    • @JohnnyGT
      @JohnnyGT  4 года назад

      Ilker 1984 usually when timing jumps, the engine is damaged, unless you’re extremely lucky and it was just one tooth

    • @JohnnyGT
      @JohnnyGT  4 года назад

      Ilker 1984 if you want to adjust a cam yes, you’re gonna have to loosen and remove a lot of stuff, at 3:31 my timing belt isn’t even installed yet, I’m barely wrapping it around everything and making any needed adjustments

    • @Ilker-ke5hj
      @Ilker-ke5hj 4 года назад

      The weird thing it jumped when it was stationary, i was adjusting the aux belt and power steering and somehow i must have loosen the wrong nut 😔. I started the engine and when i heard how it ran i didnt drive at all. I did start it for a few seconds a few times more times to check around what it can be before i found out that it was the timing though. Im going to replace the belt anyway so everything will be removed. I just wanted to know when all is off can u just turn the cams freely to set it to correct timing or do u have to do something else first. I read somewhere that you need to turn the bolt on crank 4 ticks left to be able to adjust?
