Chrono Trigger Bosses - Magus Fight

- Playing through Chrono Trigger and just felt like recording the boss fights. This is the Magus fight in Magus' Castle. I play this very conservatively rather than try to make use of Lucca's or Robo's abilities to break through his barriers.
Игры
Almost seems like a final boss fight. The lead up to it is EXCELLENT. One of the best boss fights EVER.
+Jared Curry Agreed. The lead up is incredible.... with Frog's story and Cyrus' death, etc.
+Jared Curry -- Yeah the lead up is awesome. Hearing that chanting outside the door, the silence before you get into the room. Then the candles lighting as you approach. Pretty amazing build up to this fight.
Agreed... the tension between Frog and Magus is made so palpable here. It's just awesome!
When I was a kid I DID think this was the final boss. Boy was I in for a surprise.
Agreed. I love the strategic nature of the battle. It's interesting to see people save MP for heal and use level 1 elemental attacks instead of more powerful versions and rely on items to restore MP.
This is easily one of the most epic moments in gaming.
Like the way Magus does those Hand/Arm signs to do most of his attacks, looks so unique.
+xOuterHeavenx He had perhaps one of the most dynamic battle sprites in any RPG of the time ever.
Jutsus without touching hands
When the screen briefly freezes and his theme starts playing, you know shit's gone real.
Fuck yeah
I think this battle is VERY well done. Because it's not just a "whack it until it dies" scenario like a lot of other bosses. You actually NEED strategy, and what's what I like about it.
Taurmega you need strategy for basically every boss in this game
Endhel :) Not really. Most of them can be summed up in "Attack this bit, and then attack this when it's vulnerable because you attacked this first".
Yakra: Whack him until he dies
Tank: Attack the head, then the wheel, then the body.
Guardian: Attack the bits, then the guardian
Heckran: Blast him until he dies
Zombor: Attack it until it dies.
Masamune: Attack either until it dies.
Masamune Fusion: Whack it until it dies, unless it's charging up this attack, in which case use one specific attack.
Nizbel: Zap, then whack him until he dies.
Slash and Flea: Whack 'em until they die.
Black Tyranno: Kill Azala, then whack the Tyrant until he dies
Mud Imp: Okay, you got me here, since there's a way to cheese this boss in no time at all, but otherwise it's a whack 'em until they die scenario.
Giga Gaia: Whack the arms until they die, then whack the body until it dies.
Golem Twins: Spam Luminaire.
Lavos Spawn: Spam single targetting attacks on the head.
And these are just the mandatory ones!
And Magus?
Try to whack him to death, and you'll get your arse kicked. You need to hold back and be patient in the fight.
Most of the other bosses aren't like this, you can usually attack them as soon as your turn comes up and you'll be okay.
Queen Zeal was an endurance xD
RandalfElVikingo And quite easy to charm. ;p
(As painful as those counterattacks are, the goodies you get from charming the hands are definitely worth it.)
Well is Magus's mother afterall, should be. Schala would have actually been the most powerful of the 3 if you had to fight her.
love how the fight starts... it's pretty much it's own cut scene. the dialogue texts even move on their own so that the fight starts when the music gets serious... man... i get chills every time.
One of the greatest and most famous battles in RPG history
That statue in the background resembles Lavos' second form.
Locutus Borg Wha..I've played this game like 20 times and I've never noticed that. Amazing!
Wonderful foreshadowing.
holy shit
Gotta love how Satanic the whole thing looks.
And the music is in the same key to lavos' theme; multisensory foreshadow
whats really epic about this game is when you think about it magnus is worthy of being a final boss you could end the game right hear most games do or at least 20 minutes after (aka suprise final boss after who you thought) but this game keeps it going magnus is after hours of this game bairly even a mid boss you can even get him to join you now thats epic it makes lavos all the more cool
EarthenAncient Or lordaizen66 simply wrote it wrong.
EarthenAncient what are you talking about?? what do you think im implying with it and edit what??
EarthenAncient whos name what are you talking about
+lordaizen66 the multiple endings and newgame plus make this the highest rated rpg in my book, i do like ff7 but this puts it to shame.
@@EarthenAncient Dude, you're taking his misspelling and humble ignorance a bit too deep. Drink some coffee and relax, let it be.
I appreciate a real fight vs Magus to the cheesy ones most people post. This is more in line with how the first time we all faced him was like.
And that battle was epic.
Nothing better then this song with spells and techs blasting in the background
Actually, they’re quite over leveled.
legendary battle
This game is a masterpiece, and still as good as it was in 1995
I know we're all nutting over how amazing this is but can we take a moment to appreciate how Magus roasted Frog before the fight?
Frog got absolutely roasted, I’m playing the DS port for my first time and it’s interesting seeing the dialogue changes lol! I have to say I like the DS quotes a little better, it’s more epic imo
When you see Magus do his strongest attack/ Dark Matter and nearly rekts your team, hohohoho you know shit just got real!
This is very epic! Still my all time fav character and fav fight, I am just so happy that he doesn't heal :D
+Magus10Zeal -- It's good to see you don't harbour any hard feelings about the result :)
+empire hahaha!
Magus10Zeal
hi
Magus10Zeal
I just fought this guy for the first time, most epic boss battle ever!
no the guy he spent his life trying to spite is the most epic ever :D
This is one of my all-time favorite RPGs. I normally dislike turn-base battle games, so that's saying something. There are a few exceptions and this is one. Epic epic epic
Gotta love Crono, he could beat cloud and squal, with an egg lol
*My God, chono trigger is a masterpiece forever, Magus is one of the most amazing bosses ever created*
The music is masterful.
I was just a kid when CT released. First time I fought Magus, he destroyed me with a couple of level two spells. I had to grind just to stand a chance and even then, I narrowly beat him. Such great memories
Dark Matter. That alone made me retry idk how many times. 10/10 would go through that struggle again with that memory reset.
When fighting bosses, I always turtled and heal spammed with Frog and Marle whenever I could. Always kept 50 or so of each tonic on me at any given time XD
The story made every battle memorable
gotta love how the most watched part is the one where Magus pulls Dark matter
dude I died like 5 times before I beat Magus. he was a FACTORR
Just beat magus yesterday and it was epic as hell, the weather outside was raining and thundering.
The final staircase down with the bats chasing you, a simple touch but absolutely amazing.
the black wind begins to blow...EPIC.
the fact that you struggle and are near death is the best part of this.. I hate too see ppl just annihilate bosses easy so you got a big thumbs up and Love from me on this epic battle
For some reason, I really like Magus's Shadow casting animation. It's the most complex, compared to the ones where he just points. It might just be an animation quirk, but it looks like when he casts light magic, he seems to recoil a bit.
I agree but not animation is a quirk, thought and care is behind every gesture.
I like to think it looks like he recoils when casting Light magic because he has Shadow affinity and he naturally takes more damage from it
Still the best boss music imo
No pay to win, incredible story line.
I love Magus’s battle theme.
I remember fighting him for the first time and the music just floored me. What a showdown. And now that I think about it, if I were in Square's staff right now, since now it has the rights to both, I would SERIOUSLY consider a crossover guest appearance from Magus as a secret boss in DQ XII. It all lines up. Turn based gameplay with a battle of Akira's work across two beloved series.
Bro this fight is so good it looks like it's the final boss...and the noises at the beginning Makes me shiver I like that
as a kid I legit thought the game was super short and magus was the final boss, boy was I suprised!
Not sure if intentional but his soul geyser attack actually has the wisps flying out from the flames around the arena.
Def intentional.
I would never forget this scene. Such build up, not only in the moments before the battle itself, but during the whole Masamune quest. His opening line "The black wind begins to blow..." Timed perfectly with his theme for maximum epicness. The battles is a hard one, one that you will likely redo a few times before you get the feel of it and prepare your strategy. And then the plot twist after it, which marks the beginning of my favourite parts of the game ("Forward to The Past", "Unnatural Selection?", which are but the prelude for "The Magic Kingdom", "Break the Seal!", "The Guru on Mt. Woe", "What Lies Beyond?", and the cream of the crop: "Lavos Beckons"). Truly the turning point of the game.
As for strategy, you are indeed very conservative. For the most part, I agree with what you did on the first half of the fight (the Barrier Change phase). Magus is so damn fast for you at that point in time (pun intended). My approach was somewhat similar to you the first time, with the following differences:
-Barrier Change Phase:
Frog - Leap Slash and Heal whenever Fire Barrier is activated.
Chrono - Heal with items/Aura Whirl and Lightning when Lightning Barrier is activated.
Marle - Aura Whirl with Chrono, Haste.
If no healing required when Water Barrier is activated, then All do Arc Impulse. Otherwise, stick to pattern.
-Dark Matter Phase:
Arc Impulse, Leap Slash and Aura Whirl. Magus gives you enough turns to really hammer him down and remain healed even without Haste.
Personally, and while I have indeed tried using Lucca and Robo, this is the method I like the most. Flashy too.
one of the most bad ass fights in video game history ❤
I really like that demonic statue that holds the flames in the bg
I always get hype when magus theme song comes on
You, sir, are a brave soul fighting Magus with your level in the low 20s...
I did...?
Do I seriously need to grind so much?
Wow. I often fight him below level 20. It makes no fun when it is no challenge...
@Alex Kalinin ok comrade
This is one of the greatest boss battles in VG history.
Lo recuerdo bien... recuerdo bien lo que le dije la primera vez... "¡Vamos Magus!!!, vine a aquí por ti, Vamos !!!... PELEAAA!!!... DEFIENDETEEEE!!!"
This game is so fucking good. Something about the sound effects is just perfect too
My fave boss battle in chronotrigger by FAR
one of the best fights!
This is my Favored Part of the Game!
This fight is hard as hell, but it’s also the best one in the game.
One of the greatest RPG of all time i still have my original super nintendo copy in the box, as well as a sealed japanese version
In that moment story and gameplay intersect "give me your best shot" that is a challenge to both Chrono and the player.
"Kissed any princesses 👸 lately?"
LOL
Dark matter is so beautiful
I didn’t have Ice1/Fire 2 when I first fought Magus and I still managed to beat him.
I thought this was the end of the game when I got here as a kid. Mind was blown when i realized it wasnt.
I missed the old SNES sounds to all the magic attacks because I have been playing the DS version more
The white wind begins to bring forth epic Pain! Chrono is a Geomancer class. Best Geomancer around.
Just beat Magus on my first play through of this already perfect game!! Died twice to him cuz the first time I didn’t use enough haste, and the 2nd time I got super close but dark matter wiped out 2 party members and I couldn’t recover after that :( but damn was this battle epic, the music is soooooo good
I love how it’s al mid evil . Looks like an old cathedral or perhaps a Catholic Church. The music has a bit of a Spanish influence to it. I can’t wait to start playing this game again.
I just played through this part on the DS and I gotta say, the dialogue in that version is way improved. Magus sounds truly menacing there... Here, not so much. Still a really epic fight no matter what version you're playing.
"okay... give me your best shot, if you're prepared for the void!" is a much more interesting line than a typical death threat, IMO.
You gotta love a boss who damages your party every time he uses a BARRIER.
Wow the SNES sound effects sound so much cooler than the ds ones
Snes was far ahead
Maybe someone can help me out. The first time I fought him, I kept fighting him for literally 40 minutes straight using up all of my mid tonics and MP and losing. When I fought him again, I defeated him under 5 using the same tactic (The second time he used his Dark Matter attack which he didn’t the first time). Just not really sure why
When I was a kid, I always had a hard time beating magus. I didn’t realize those barrier changes allowed for damage only from that class of magic. Once I learned that I can damage magus with magic if it was the right barrier, he became a lot easier to fight.
Magus was my first ever video game crush. XD My preteen self loved them broody with long hair.
Awesome video dude! Is it alright if I use it in a music cover video I'm working on? Of course I'll make sure to credit you appropriately.
My favorite fight of the game
They didn't put a save point anywhere near this battle and it's significantly more difficult than any other fight thus far. Dang it
What? You get a save point after beating Ozzie, which is right before this fight.
GeckosandGames He must have accidently chosen the left warp point, when the save point was on the right
The sound of some skills tell me that this is a PS version of the game. I played it like mad back when this game came out in the SNES.
top 5 Rpgs of ALL TIME EVER
It's the Magus fight. It's legendary. It's why I take Glenn and Marle into the Lavos fight.
I have a theory after all these years, that this battle was tough even so than the last boss (that was just long) to prove that Lavos did made many timelines. The paradox is around because he bends time. It was only clear to me when I brought Robo in the original game.
This version of the game seems more primitive in terms on graphics, music and sound. It doesn't hurt my ears, compared to the DS version.
I feel as if I was looking at a prototype of the game, and I like it.
It's the SNES release.
This one just has overall better sounds effects and better dialogue imo
Music is epic
The first boss fight where I actually struggled.
I was young and stupid. I didn't understand the "only this damages" thing.
Flames accension are the Mario World lava bubbles sfx
I remember thinking this was the final boss the first time I played this. ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE VOID???
"Magus is preparing a powerful spell!"
Not as clear, but "risking" a spell does bring it across that he's lowering his defenses to do it.
Love your strategy here...awesome work :)
magus risk casting a spell
I don't know why, but after Magus cast dark matter, the health of the characters slowly waned. Why is that? I've seen it happen in other instances, but I don't know why.
+dydx09 It's not Dark Matter, the ability that is making the characters' HP wane is his "Geyser / HP Down" ability
what level were you when you fought magus
First six seconds shows that information.
When Magus cast Geyser (one of the most annoying spells) your HP decreases with every turn, and the more he uses it, the fastest your HP falls, so, you need to take Magus down quickly or cast healing spells or using items who heal the party in order to counter the effect of Geyser
That music...
You really need Lucca here. Fire and shadow are both achieved with her in the group.
I would agree that Lucca works better against Magus; but she can't use Antipode because Frog is required for this fight.
@@genemano3921 Yea I thought Lucca and Frog did one but I think their dual techs are all fire and not shadow. That being said I always bring Lucca here for the extra fire damage. Not to mention Fire sword or red line hit HARD when he's fire vulnerable. Although Marle and Frog have ice water which actually can also hit REALLY hard and I didnt see it in this video. So many of the Dual techs are so good honestly.
Magus is the best RPG antagonist ever in my opinion
Kefka too
This fight and gollum twin to me are hardest in game
IMO: The best RPG ever made.
Frog's crits be on point.
hes probably using the hero medal item, it gives crit boost if using masamune
Chrono + Frog + Robo = 1000 damage
Seven Players magus+robo+luca=strongest triple tech in the game and MASSIVE damage
I always used chrono, ayla and frog lol
That party against Magus is a big gamble, you sacrifice strategy and speed for attack power, so, unless you have good levels and many healing items, better to have Marle instead of Robo
TRIPLE DELTA!!!
You should consider bringing Lucca or Robo with you, so you can attack with Fire/Shadow.
Would of been cool to see a Triple Tech 😊
Easily the best boss fight for me and my favourite boss in the entire game.
Oh forgot that move oh
I remember when i first tried to play this game , as soon as i saw chrono it seemed like a stupid dragon ball z game . But it turned out to be possibly the best rpg game i played in my life , the shear variety of bosses and game tactics is incredible
My Sons Favorite Game/Living On White Horse Road Ext!
That portal was *NOT* created by Lavos, that was the Entity. In the original timeline Lavos just enters and kills Magus.
Dream devourer?
Best part about this fight wasn't even showed. The custom animation that plays when you lose.
Honestly, I wish they upped the difficulty level against Magus. I get the first time you play the game, it's difficult as it's a very unique battle and he'll counterattack you to death if you're careless. But the battle is very formulaic and not challenging in future playthroughs. Still was a load of fun back in the day. ATG game.
That 6666 hp is no joke compared to the previous battles you've fought in the game
He is a boss at the middle of the game, it would be pointless to have Magus fight more difficult that the ones who came next, so, I think this fight was perfect with the difficulty and a 10/10
I remember when my whole team died except Marle lol
The best part of all of this is that the game is only 50% done. This boss battle was so epic it should have been the end but no.
Anyone come here after hearing the Musical version?
