Chrono Trigger Final Battle (vs Lavos full power head-on, hardest version) [PSx]

In Chrono Trigger, the main antagonist and final boss Lavos is initially incredibly overpowering. When you fight him, he uses the power of every boss in the game, what you're truly fighting is the combined strength of Lavos and every single boss in the game.
Typically, the player would do other parts of the game in order to weaken Lavos so that you don't have to fight him so head-on against all his accumulated power. By doing what is essentially sidequests, you can weaken Lavos until you don't even have to fight his outer form at all.
However, me being the kind of person that I am, I want to fight Lavos head-on, while he's at his best. I won't count anything less as a true victory. So here I show that Lavos in his entirety, and that his ability to summon the strength of all the games bosses is little more than fodder to me.
I also varied the attacks to keep it interesting. Just using the high-level attacks that I know do the most damage constantly would kill faster but ugh... that's boring.
I actually kinda wish I varied them more. Coulda used Luminaire and Antipode 3 more than I did.
"I also varied the attacks to keep it interesting. Just using the high-level attacks that I know do the most damage constantly would kill faster but ugh... that's boring."
Thumbs up for this!
Exciting fight. I like that you were not over powered.
Must be another pokemon fan
*Seeing Lavos in your first playthrough:* What the FUCK is that OH SHIT I'M DEAD
*Seeing Lavos in your 14th playthrough:* bitch. **attacks**
38:39 First Form Cell
Toriyama had a hand in designing the characters, it's well known.
And he's even like Cell in terms of origin and powers. Lavos absorbed the DNA of everyone and can use all of their powers, hence why he's able to mimic attacks. He was also capable of making his own spawn, like Perfect Cell.
Perfect, this game was the most valuable jewel of my childhood games, just perfect, the best ever!
I love how Lavos' second form looks like a cross between Imperfect Cell and Guyver.
Toriyama did character design for chrono trigger
He doesn't look like Richard Dean Anderson at all.
@@TheUnbearded 🤣🤣 I see what you did there
@@mosiarmstrong Come to think of it, a cross between Cell and MacGyver might be the most unbeatable foe of all.
@@TheUnbearded you're probably not wrong, between Mac's skills and Cell's power levels.
The core forms music is so bad ass. Love how the backgroynd changes too so sick!
awesome stuff man !
The many forms of Lavos:
Form 1: Colossal cyclopean hedgehog.
Form 2: Imperfect Cell.
Form 3: Two pumpkin-shaped pods that look exactly like, but the one on the right is the real Lavos. Plus, an astronaut chicken man.
Form 2: NecroSaro - lost his legs, must have forgotten to use the golden bracelet.
Actually the right pod is the real Lavos Core, since if he's destructed, the other ones are destructed too
Okay this is very cool and one of the most entertaining lavos figts on youtube but that nizbel fight was PAINFUL
I was hoping by some chance he would try using lightning 1 or 2, but it never happened... :'D he just straight up reduced his HP by brute force
@@ginman3095 Not even bothering with the weaknesses. In true Unga Bunga fashion.
Yesyesyeys
This is far as you go, Lavos! Let's end this for the future!
This boss is Hard but rewarding when you finally win it
Definitely not the hardest version of lavos..... The hardest version has to be whenever you first encounter lavos and right before chrono dies.
Actually, fighting Lavos right after Crono dies via going through Black Omen is the true hardest way to fight him because instead of the easy Phase 1 outer shell fights before he gets serious, you instead have to fight through the Black Omen itself, the three mutants, Mammon Machine, and Queen Zeal before being taken straight to Phase 2 of Lavos' outer shell fight (the phase where Lavos actually gets serious).
@@LordNanfoodle Incorrect, as the enemies of the black omen are quite easy, especially if you prepare with even some of the resources possible, Lavos in the ocean palace is by far the toughest, given that his HP in his first phase is three times higher, his attacks are far more devastating, and you don't have access to the better equipment available post flight-enabled Epoch.
@@BlazingBoltAeris Primarily the reason I gave for saying the Black Omen route was the hardest was that you're pretty much expected to eat dirt the first time you fight Lavos in the Ocean Palace, to the point that unless you've been hot & heavy on keeping up on staying in the best gear and nomming *ALL THE TABS* you could easily expect quad-digit damage from most any attack from Ocean Palace Lavos _(Normally I take like 600-800 damage from the first attack in a standard New Game playthrough [Not New Game +]),_ so I primarily overlooked it for the time being and looked at the other ways to get to Lavos, including the telepod route in New Game +, and realized, given those criteria, that that particular path to Lavos is overall the most difficult given just how much of a slog it can be for most players if they attempt it immediately after doing the Blackbird.
@@LordNanfoodle Ocean Palace Lavos while extraordinarily difficult is certainly beatable in a standard playthrough, thus why I would personally include it. The reason I say it's possible is this: Grind like hell in the palace and level up and gain every tech, Complete Fiona's Forest and get the green dream, get vigilant hats on the party, get swallow, equip either elemental plates or platinum vests, choose whatever accessories you feel will work best, set the battle to wait instead of active if you need an extra boost, and fight Lavos.
While yes, destruction rains from the heavens can hit through auto-revives, other attacks cannot; therefore with Crono, Robo, and Marle cast lifeline at the beginning of the fight (after a cure wind to heal up after DRFH) and just constantly have Crono dish out damage (preferably having him equipped with the golden stud) while Marle and Robo heal, this should get you through the first phase.
Once inside Lavos' shell heal up, equip the green dream to Marle, begin the fight with phase 2 and immediately get killed by the nipples of doom, Marle gets revived, Have her use arise on crono, crono uses raise on robo, use lifeline, then if needed use a mega elixir or just cure wind while crono spams Luminaire to take out the arms, once the arms are down things get far easier, and that phase should be taken down without incident.
Phase 3 doesn't have a party wipe at the start of the battle, use lifeline, haste up the part with marle while crono and robo can use some dual techs or Crono attacks while robo heals, get rid of all the pods and throw everything you have at lavos until you win.
Now, since ocean palace lavos is possible on a base playthrough, I consider it fair game to include here. That being said, given your statement on not including ocean palace Lavos, then in that case you're right, however it's important to remember how busted the black omen is for powering up (charm), so while yes it's hard, it's important not to understate how much easier it gets upon progressing through it.
All this being said, I'd like to throw in that upon a look back at my previous comment, my wording seemed a bit rude on my end, and if it seemed rude on your end, I apologize what was said both here and there is not meant to be an attack on you or your thoughts, but simply my opinion on that part of the game.
Lord Nanfoodle nope lavos uses the boss rush even if you went via the black o,em
Omg I was freaking shook when I got to Lavos’ final form for the first time back in the day. This entire boss battle was hype as fuck! Chrono, Ayla and Magus were the characters I used for this fight.
Hookers n' Cocaine learn to understand that people share opinions and feelings on the internet.
@Incognitive Distortion I didn’t but that’s because I don’t have friends.
Crono, Magus, Marle. You cant beat that. All the heals all the damage, but The OG 3 are good too. Antipode wrecks.
Chrono, Frog & Ayla
I went Chrono, Frog, and Robo. The BOYS. Cross slashes for days, Robo with the huge health pool pumping out heals.
I still got this game. In mint condition and everything. Got all the characters up to level 99 as well. Got all the secret weapons and special attacks
I’m jealous. Saw the ds version for sale in a store was about to buy it but it was $300. Hate to think what the snes would be worth
@@cantdestroyher7245 you do realise you can play it with emulators on PC or even your mobile, right?
@@MrKosobi yeah but owning a physical copy would be cool
That Magus phase was painful to see just how many times you wound up healing him.
I like how the background color changes based on the hp of the center part of the core.
God I miss the days when this came out I was 6 time files
One of my all time favorites :) I still have my PS Copy & Nintendo 3DS.
"The part on the left heals 75 hp"
Chrono: "That's cute"
I got so excited whenever you were close to choosing lighting vs nizbel form, but then used spincut T_T
You'd think they'd scale up the bosses at least a little bit. The first few bosses are total pushovers at this point in the game, which kinda takes away from the whole "Lavos is super powerful" thing.
Cool thing tho is you can fight future bosses tho
You’re just a moron. Go out and touch some grass lol
me: hears this
Also me: ophiuchus plays in my head
Hmm, out of curiousity; did you manage to do the head on method during your first encounter with Lavos? (The one where he almost always TPKs, before New Game plus anyways.)
I forced myself to play the ps1 chronicles version in 2009 after not bothering with it like a decade prior due to the slow load times for trigger being unbearable. Got all the way to Lavos final boss and never ended up beating him. Imma have to replay this masterpiece again
My recommended team:
-Crono
-Ayla
-Magus
They work, trust me
Facts!
Sounds about right
The best team ever 👌
Thanks for the idea deltA drAx but i prefer crono marle and luca
DeltA DrAx chrono marle ayla works to
Them final kicks
When you get to the last 3, focus your attacks on the guy on the right. Fastest way to win. The other 2 will revive, but the right monster is the real boss
(For those of you who might watch/read this and need a tip to win😉)
@E-1 The 2nd Every time I beat it, I had to beat the monster on the right before I would win
Huh. On the nds version at least, killing the right core would end the battle immediatily.
@@theotofte888in SNES version too

When I got to this point all my characters were at high levels and had all their magic.
This should have been put on the snes mini since they had secret of mana should hav had this one too
You can just hack it in with hakchi2
Square Enix hates Chrono Trigger
I've always thought the middle part of the core battle looked like a dog standing on two legs...
Hw kinda does when you look at his ear shape.
Thank you!!! I thought I was the only one who thought that!
Imagine what Lavos would look like in HD-2D.
SO AWESOME!!!! i had once battled lavos before defeating zombor and when i reached zombor/lavos i did not no what to do. but this....
man, in the form of Lavos as Nizbel JUST USE THE FUCKING LIGHTNING !!!
33:23 Waited 65,000,000 years just to go "LOOK AT MY NIPPLES!"
I love that you used Lucca to do the epic final attack on the final boss.
You know that Right Core was the boss lol
Fuck the Right Core!
This isn't the hardest version and you don't even need to do sidequests to skip the first phase. The first phase is a repetition of old bosses which at this point shouldn't be a problem and lavos itself is also no problem. After that phase you can even save and leave.
Anyone else think that Lavos' Core bits look like udders?
Why do you put a barrier on your character with strongest magic defense and a shield on your character with strongest physical defense? Also, cast Haste on Marle first, duh....I can’t be mad though, got to hear World Revolutions for a solid ten minutes!
I just recently played this for the first time after always hearing for year and years that it's supposed to be good. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I was level 65-66 Chrono, Rob, Magus and lavos was fairly easy. What exactly makes it easier?
@@defactofaulto8792 Rob's aoe heal is so good and I gave Magus the gold ering or stud I don't remember which but it was the one that reduced magic use and I was able to use dark matter for tons of damage. And when rob didn't need to heal his Uzi punch is awesome. I have prism spec, rainbow sword for crono and man. Had such a great time. It was at night and hearing the lavos core music got me so hyped to finish the game
|y||677
Maxed out Chrono, Magus, and Frog has always been my team of choice…..and as much hyper elixir as you can find
i got the stupidly powerful rainbow shell hats from that side quest with marle and the most damage I took was like 100 - 200 lmao. was using the main guy + robot + magus
And to think i considered fighting Lavos before i even fought in the Zenan Bridge. I was lost at that time of the game
I only got until Lavos switching to Giga Gaia's fighting mode
This video and its description had me seething jesus
Like, add what variety dude, you spent 10 minutes doing basic attacks on bosses that would go down with a single properly timed spell
6:50 an advice; In the prehistoric world, the 1st boss of the lizard leader is invulnerable to light. so you should have thrown a lightning bolt v.1 or v.2 to weaken it and it will take more damage.
Vulnerable, not invulnerable
Yes, that's what I wanted to say and it came out invulnerable. Thanks for correcting me.☺ but did you have to tell me right now? That post is from a year ago.😑
@@hakunoriyami5854 I just saw that video, and your comment, yesterday

Dude. This. So frustrating to watch you barely handle that one
*THROUGH THE CENTURIES WE’VE RESTED, NOW IT’S TIME TO DECIMATE HUMANITY.*
No way! Not if I seal the deal!
I see someone listened to Chrono Trigger the Musical
Well, it's about time...
My party members are: Crono - Marle - Robo
Both marle & robo can use the strongest duo healing spell.
Crono can duo tech with anyone to provide a great amount of damage.
And technically, this isn't tge hardest battle, fight lavos after saving marle / in zeal's palace, lavos is twice more stronger
personally my hardest Lavos fight was when I was alone, just Crono, taking the right teleport pod instead of left when Marle disappears...
@@CB-lh8gw In the second playthrough right? I actually don't remember how strong that lavos is compared to the one in Zeal's. But if Lavos could keep Crono busy on healing himself over & over again then that'd be a long game over
Smh I wish I had faced that Lavos outer shell that you faced. Because when i got to the part of destruction raining from heaven after that he would do a freaking ridiculous blast beam that would instantly kill Lucca, and leave both Crono and Marle is little health, then as I heal and revive he would just stick to that attack. I remember playing that part a ton of times and he always did it to me, yet I look at your game play and he never not one time did the attack to you... I feel cheated lol. This was on SNES.
Check just after the 30-minute mark...
Marle and Lucca are useless after you get Magus. They're extremely weak in physical attacks and have low stats, and Magus magic is bigger than theirs.
greatest game ever. needs to be remade
Instead of re-released? Agreed. The latest port on Steam had a looooot of issues when it first came out and surprisingly SquareEnix fixed five of the biggest issues. I enjoyed it but miss the original translation of the game. Frog doesn't give me the same vibe without the Old English accent. :(
@@blakeirvin3011 Early-Modern actually.
@@hater105 Thank you for that! I double checked Shakespearean Era as a mental reference, which like you said is Early-Modern!
@Alex Kalinin*inhales*
I wouldn't mind seeing a graphical update, like either cell-shaded(Dark Cloud 2 style) or at least completely 3D version like some of the fan remakes that have popped up and served with Cease and Desist orders over the years.. they had potential! I Am Setsuna style would be good enough for me if they wanted to keep the top down view. The music and the original translation were perfect, and the only thing I MIGHT enjoy more would be an orchestrated soundtrack with the option to use the original! Maybe include both translations for people that did enjoy the new one, especially since the new endings that came around with the DS release wouldn't have an older translation.. lol.
End rant!

I wonder if lavos in 1999 AD is actually
the covid-19 in 2020 AD now, spreading danger all over the world...
his shell looks similar to the coronavirus
Nope, Lavos is the literally the Ultimate life form that has been borrowing in the earth since Aeons and has forced the evolution of the species and bended it to it's will so it could absorb all the energy when it awoke.
And Lavos is a parasite, not a virus. It's alive and has a soul.
So yeah, the comparison is not even close, and I don't see the resemblence between Lavos and Covid-19
What do you think broke the land bridge in 1999 A.D.
I kinda of do, and don’t want Lavos, to just show up these days, also what’s kinda funny the road in the shop center near me actually has a cracked road so Lavos, is literally just about to break out of it lol I’m kidding, but honestly everytime i see cracked roads i think of Lavos, breaking out of it.

this is not the hardest you are just not doing much damage to Nizbel
Well fuck, started lavos fight around level 35 and it's just not possible, two shots everyone, can't heal fast enough... fuck.
There were many times you should have used Confuse, Luminaire, Ice Sword 2, and Fire Sword 2 instead of basic attacks. You would have beat him a hell of alot faster if you did.
Keith Ritch he said in the description he didn’t do that cause he didn’t want to finish the battle quicker because it would have been boring
How can I win from him without the max hp level? I tried to get the oath ending. But, after defeating "giga gaia atack mode" he just rain on me, and everybody dies.

Hint: Best Team for fighting Lavos is:
Crono - Robo - Magus
Crono is the strongest in physical attacks and he's needed for some fights that you can only do physical damage in an enemy (like left Lavos pod), and he's also the protagonist, it'd be unfair if he wasn't in the final battle.
Robo doesn't have very much of high stats or significant attacks, but he can use Robo Heal to heal everyone in a pinch (or when half HP if his level is high), and also use items (like Elixir and Megalixir) without using the other ones turns.
Magus has the best magical attacks and is pretty useful when you need to cast an specific elemental magic (like when Lavos switches to attack just like Magus, with elemental barriers).
However, if you are fighting Lavos at really high levels, consider using Ayla at Level 99 instead of Robo, since her Steel Fist can crit for 9999 damage (use some accessory to increase crit chance, and 4 crits kill Lavos final form)
I guess level 27 isn't enough
Finish all the sidequest and you're pretty much ready to go
