    A tip on peeling the cane, where I live in China vendors use a large peeling knife. I believe it's actually called a sugar cane knife. It looks like an industrial strength vegetable peeler lol. Almost every Asian market sells them for pretty cheap. I recommend getting one of the heavy duty ones with thick black steel, that's what the vendors here use, they peel an entire cane in just a few moments with all the ease of peeling a carrot. Hope this helps.

    At the end of your video when you were tasting the sugarcane a memory popped into my mind. When I was a small girl I remember watching my great-uncle Stanley's mule going around and round in circles grinding the sugarcane and my great-uncle Stanley bringing me a glass of fresh-squeezed cane juice and knowing I was loved.

    You are wonderfully calm, and a great teacher. I’d love to come and sit watching you doing this. I don’t think I will ever get to try sugar cane, but it’s lovely to watch this. I don’t think it would grow in the UK, and if it did I’d need a strong individual to harvest and prepare it for me lol

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter  6 месяцев назад +1

      Be sure to strain the juice through a very fine mesh to get all the tiny fiber out. When you press the cane, none of the cane fiber gets into the juice and it is clear. The Breville pulverizes the cane fiber and suspends it in the juice, making it cloudy. You want to strain as much fiber out of the juice as possible or it will not digest well at all. I learned the hard way and got a stomach ache.

  • @IlDeimos
    @IlDeimos 6 лет назад +2

    You can use a cheese cloth to strain all of the fibers out. I think it's called a cheese cloth anyway. It's the best way to separate the liquid.

    You would get WAY more juice from a TuboBiz juicer. You wouldn't believe how much more you would get from that whole cane. Yeah, you got juice but it's not efficient at all. The Tubobiz are expensive for sure but they will last forever. I bought one and had it shipped and have literally juiced thousands of Sorghum cane with it for syrup. Well worth the money and you will get WAY more juice.

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching and contributing. I realize that the Tubobiz juicers are top of the line and would be much easier. However, this video was made specifically for people who only want to juice one or two canes once in a while and do not have hundreds of dollars in their budget for a serious juicer. Most vegetable juicers would be ruined by juicing sugar cane. The Breville can handle the job if done properly as I demonstrate. As to your assertion that I would get more juice from the same amount of cane using Tubobiz, I doubt it. The leftover cane fiber was absolutely powder dry and fluffy. No more juice was left in the fiber. My biggest complaint about using the Breville was the amount of microscopic fibers left in the juice, which then had to be filtered out with a double-thickness of cotton cloth. The quality of juiced produced by roller-crushing is still better than that produced by the Breville, in my opinion. Good luck with your channel off youtube. I'll check out your new media platforms.

    @floridabeachhunter tried this before but juicer clogged up and heated up maybe probably the secret is that the juicer must be Breville made? However, I wondered how long did it really take you from start to finish to juice the entire cane? The reason why I asked is because sugar cane juice usually turns the darker colour brownish mud usually after about 3 hours minimum! So how long from start to finish did it take to juice the 10 feet long sugar cane?
    It would have been really great for statistics to know the diameter at both ends at the cane.
    At the beginning the color of the sugar cane juice was a palish yellow then turned greenish and then yellow-brownish and finally brownish mud color. That indicated a long time past and or the temperature was high to increase the oxidation and breakdown decomposition of the juice. Probably that may have been the reason for the stomach ache afterwards. What do you think?

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter  6 лет назад +2

      J Archers I would not try this with any other type of juicer except Breville. Once I started running the cane through the juicer, until I took the first drink was less than 20 minutes. The entire process, from peeling the cane to drinking the juice was less than an hour. I was in the shade, there was a cool breeze, and the temperature was about 75 degrees F. I think you are comparing the color of the juice from crushed cane to the color of the shredded cane juice produced by the Breville. The tiny fibers in the juice give it a darker color. It also tastes slightly different than crushed cane juice. The juice was fresh. It was the insoluble fibers that cause stomach upset. It must be filtered through a fine filter. Even then, the juice produced by the Breville does not taste as good as crushed cane juice tastes. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    You can use a cheese cloth in the strainer, thank you this was inspirational, do you have issues with any specific type of bugs growing them in the planter that's exactly what I was going to do was grow them in a planter I live in 7B and was told that I could grow the sugar cane here but can I grow it in a planter.?

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter  2 года назад +1

      I did not have a problem with bugs in the containers. Sugar can is very hungry though, so you'll probably need to add some additional nitrogen at some point if the leaves start to yellow. I'd suggest worm castings and/or blood meal. After they gain some size they will need water every day. You may have to tie them to a stake when they get large to keep the wind from blowing them over. Your main problem will be the cold. I'd start them indoors early in the year to let them get a head start. Then when the danger of frost is over, move them outside to a sunny location. If you plan to overwinter them outdoors in the containers after harvest, you'll have to protect them from the cold or the roots will freeze. The canes themselves will not survive zone 7b winters, I'm quite sure, unless you happen to have a very protected location with a southern exposure. Good luck!

    Can you dehydrate the juice to make sugar for baking?

    • @floridabeachhunter
      @floridabeachhunter  8 лет назад +7

      +Lynn Dutt Yes, most definitely. You would just need to boil it down until it crystallizes. Then it would be in a lump which you'd have to pulverize. Or you could stop boiling before it crystallizes and just use the syrup as a sweetener. I guess you'd have to reduce the liquid in the recipe if you used cane syrup instead of dry sugar.

    Hey, here's a suggestion for you: www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Ratcheting-PVC-Cutter-TMC0001J/204284860 It doesn't have to be from HD, but you get the idea. It makes real easy cutting of the cane for harvesting, and for cutting out the joints. The other thing you might want to try is Cutting out the joints before peeling as you can put each section on the table (on end and shave off the outer layer. It will also make it easier to avoid wasting so much usable cane while peeling. Also, keep your knife really sharp, and sharpen frequently as the tough fiber will dull it fast. If you're not good with a steel, then get one of those ones that you draw the knife through to tweak up the edge for faster and safer peeling. So far as the cutter goes, you may have to remove the blade from the cutter and use a file or grinder to sharpen it. It's just one screw on the pivot point and it comes right apart. BTW, get the ratcheting type.

    got the same brand juicer, different model im thinking of going over the top with wine making so im wondering how many feet of cane or how much juice would someone need for a Lb or 5Lbs of sugar?

      Richie, cane juice is about 12% sugar, so ten gallons of juice would yield slightly more than one gallon of syrup. You'd have to cook the syrup down more to get it to crystalize. I'm not sure how much a gallon of sugar would weigh. Probably close to 5 pounds. I saw on a video that 120 gallons of cane juice will produce about 15 gallons of syrup, which is about right.

    Do you know the variety of that sugar cane. It looks like it gives good yield. I'm wondering about sugar content too.

      Pretty sure it is an heirloom variety. It was given to me by a neighbor who has been growing it for many years. It is quite soft and good for chewing. Might have been brought down from Louisiana.

      @@floridabeachhunter oh o.k. I'm in hawaii and I wanna get some. A few years back I went to the universitys agricultural station and they had all these varieties hawaiian, tahitian, filipino. Mostly pacific varieties but I recall getting a gallon of juice out of one twelve foot stalk. It was so filled with juice and very thick stalks. I wish I remembered the variety but I think I wrote it down. I gotta dig through my notes. Thnx for the info.

      Maybe you could do a short video of how you use it and post a link
      here? Glad to hear it is working for you. I'll have a look at it,
      although I'm more inclined to save up and buy one of the commercial juicers.

    Idk what’s wrong with y’all’s juicers but my 7$ Hamilton beach juicer that I got at the thrift store years ago worked just fine for juicing sugar cane ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      No, just a cheap store-bought kitchen knife that doesn't take a very good edge.
