I've been watching quite a few of your videos, honestly your method is quite elaborate and straightforward. Some of these manufacturers should higher you just to do these reviews! Otherwise you're making life easier for us . Thanks.
Really liked your video thank you, especially the bit where you displayed the exposure of the sidewall. You've helped me understand further how pressure in the tyre can control tread exposure, hence performance, hence puncture risk.
its a good xc combo to have the cross front and race rear. nice and fast. I havent tried the pure grip compound , only the black chilli with protection. great tyres
Thanks a lot for the comparison. I had bought Maxxis TT race last year and this time I wanted to build my xc bike with Continental Race King but i didn't know it could be paired with an X-king. Will surely look more into that
I got 2x Continental RaceKing for my 29" Merida BigNine 200 XL MTB. Had some MAXXIS with the same thread pattern but they got ripped after a year or two.
My luck is vary running the continental tires tubeless. Last year the I had a pair of cheap 26x2,4 X-Kings and they were fine but now I have pair of 27,5x2,2 Race Kings (puregrip) and they are losing air through the sidewalls overnight. I had Mountain King II and Race King both the light RaceSport versions those are impossible to seal. The Protection is the safest bet for tubeless.
+LoveMTB So far Maxxis is the best for me but I had no trouble setting up tubeless the Geax AKA and Saguaro tires. Last year's Schwalbe was also OK as I could run tubeless the cheap performance version of Rocket Rons but lately I bought a pair of Hans Dampfs and they are leaking through the sidewalls. One of them still sealed properly but the other one is unpredictable and loses the air frequently. I think Schwalbe wants to make sure that you will have to buy the more expensive versions if you want to run them tubeless.
I run a Race King Protection up front and a Speed King in the back, probably the fastest rolling setup I have ever had, really sketchy though in the wet. Mostly ride hard pack trails as my body just cant take the the beating anymore from rooty rocky stuff.
LoveMTB everyone runs Maxxis over in the UK where I come from. Continentals are so underrated, they are sold as budget tyres here in the big bike stores that produce lots of low quality bikes. Can usually pick up the tyres dirt cheap.
I have the 2.2 crossking black chilli compound front and back on a 2016 xcaliber8 and they are super quiet and fast on asphalt and dirt but i have had alot of slippage off the side tread on rocks even while at very low pressure.
I have the 29" folding race king. Very light and fast, but after about four weeks of use it spring about a dozen pin hole leaks. The dreaded wet spots all over, using stans tubeless fluid and glitter even. There's no point if you need tubes becaue now it weighs half again as much.
protection is such a better tire , I rode the cheap ones at first then went to the protections , way better. my race kings protection run , 59 mm wide on a flow ex with a 25.5 mm inside width @ 30 psi.
Hi, is the race king good for pave roads too? I'm planning on buying one and I mainly ride on pave roads and I just don't like slick tires. I want my tires to be all around.
I've used both tires. They grip well but will never use them again. The sidewalls will wear quickly and start leaking Stan's fluid so much you have to replace them before the tread starts to wear.
Ive been doing atleast 200km long ride every sunday and atleast 30km daily to and from work using race king since I love the rolling of it , works fine ish but since im a bit of an agressive rider the threads on it wears a bit quickly but overall they are great tires . Been using those for 6mo now and switching the tires from front to back adn vice versa monthly thread wear is even and nice but its fast ...
If we're talking purely about rolling resistance, raceking is one of the best. I just bought a raceking for the rear and crossking for the front but haven't tried it yet
@@LoveMTB well I’m currently riding a 23 supercaliber with the xr2 front and rear. 20psi front 23psi rear. The tires handle great but I want to try something new. I do the occasional race between 10-25 miles with the occasional 50mile events. I do ride the bike as hard as I can and I do push it through rock gardens and such. I was looking at the pirelli scorpion xc rc as well but need to see what I can fit on it. The frame claims a max tire size of 2.2 but the xr2 2.2 I have now measures at 2.5in(63.5mm). I want to stay within or under 720g and side wall protection would be good since I take some tight lines at times.
I'm not a very active bike rider. Maybe once or twice per week. The terrain varies from concrete, gravel, small rocks, and woods. My weight is around 70kg. As I said, I'm not a professional, I do this for fun. How do you think this tire will hold up to my demands? Do you recommend other tires? Thanks for answering.
I'm not gonna run them tubeless. I would love to buy the protection ones but X-King simple model has a very good discount, like 70% or so. I wonder how long the non protection model would last.
@@LoveMTB I have tubeless Xking 27.5 2.2 front/rear right now. Which model maxxis would you recommend instead? I do 50% road and 50% trail. Mostly dry, rocky, desert conditions. Thank you for your time. Awesome reviews!
Would you recommend raceking 2.20 front rear? Or it wont grip enough? I consider crossking for the front but they have higher rolling res than race king protections
hate to say it, but the race king not only can't hold air after five weeks, pin hole leaks, about a dozen, I also noticed a couple of my side knobbies completely ripped off the front tire. I'm not even a agressive rider! It is a light tire. I'm going to need to switch back to my Kaiser's which i had no problem whatsoever.
I have the xKing on a vintage Trek. The tires cost me more than the bike. I do not need great performance, but even on flat dirt the lack of rolling resistance is noticeable.
@@m.d.498 they roll a lot faster than what I had on the bike. I have some pretty nice kendas on another bike and they are faster than those too. I just ride dirt roads and slow horse trails , can’t speak to technical performance

I can confirm that X-kings are so narrow, it's laughable how Continental makes their tyres the lightest at customer expense. It maybe that they need unusually wide rim, but the tyre isn't from wide rim madness period, so I wouldn't assume that. Still geax saguaro is bigger and actually exactly the measuremnt claimed than x-king on the same rim, sooo, they suck ;-)

FFWD to 2024, who takes the spot for a fast rolling, gravelly XC tire (that does include some wet, swampy patches): RaceKing, or Scorpion XC RC?
RaceKing is a good tire but can't corner. In many conditions. XC RC is great in a lot more situations, wet or dry. Hope that helps.
