    Hyperglide+ is simply a perfection. On my road bike, I have the complete Ultegra Di2 R8170 groupset and the shifting quality doesn't get any better than that. On a MTB, I originally had a complete XTR M9100 groupset, but I bought it second hand and after about a year of my usage something snapped in the shifter, so I decided to replace the derailleur and the shifter with Sram AXS stuff, since my brother-in-law had an unused XX1 AXS derailleur he was gifted and left it to me. It's simply the best of both worlds - smoothness of HG+, consistency and speed of the electronics (sometimes in muddy conditions the mechanical stuff can get a bit sluggish, which the servo motors eliminate) and no cables to worry about (no wearing out and needing to replacement). Putting the battery on a charger once my Garmin notifies me or before a race is a small price to pay.

    I appreciate you experimenting with these types of drivetrain mashups so the rest of us can make informed decisions. This “hack” with cassette spacer and limited spline + lockring thread engagement is definitely a “pass” for me.
    Out of curiosity, is the physical movement of the T-Type RD preventing further inboard movement of the cage, or does the SRAM app simply not allow enough adjustment? If it’s the latter, maybe someone can hack the app to allow more inward movement 😂

    The main reason to run shimano cassettes is the price of the cassettes and single cogs availability. They cost 3-4 bucks for 14-18t and 12-16 for 10/12 set but 5 new ones cost maybe 25$, a new sram cassette 10x more.

    I opted for a R7100 cassette and M6100 chain when upgrading from Force mechanical to electrical rim brakes, mainly because the Shimano drivetrain is way cheaper. It worked flawlessly without any modding or spacers. Maybe I'll upgrade to a HG+ compatible drivetrain in the future.

  • @JimtheRangerTimmy
    @JimtheRangerTimmy 4 часа назад +2

    Great idea, but my concern with spacing a Shimano cassette is the 1mm spacer behind, that means on a 12 speed shimano cassette on low 3 cogs are matched together and relys on the overlap on the end of the freehub body as support for tge 3 last cog cluster, under pressure this could fail because of the small surface the lower cogs have got to support torque, they could just rip the splines off, a steel freehub body would help, but it's a engineering issue as regards to torque and mechanical advantage

    I was wondering about the T type chainring with a Shimano chain. I love the shifting of HG+ but don’t like the crankset options. AXS helped me out of a thumb issue. But it was worse performance than HG+. T type was a lot of money for the same shift smoothness but much slower and with a battery.

  • @GHinWI
    @GHinWI 3 часа назад

    I recently set my fat bike up with XT. It shifts nicely, possibly as good or better than XO1. However:
    1) I really miss the cage lock feature on SRAM derailleurs
    2) micro spline cassette is ridiculous with all those tiny pieces to assemble and the lock nut threads that barely engage. XD freehub is the superior solution.
    3) I do prefer the push or pull shift to a smaller cog on XT
    I maintain that, price being no object, SRAM mechanical XO1 remains the pinnacle of MTB drivetrain. If price IS an object, it’s a toss up between XT and GX.
    What I’m hoping for is mechanical XO1 transmission mount.

    • @lenolenoleno
      @lenolenoleno 2 часа назад +1

      1) You can run a SRAM derailleur with an all Shimano 12sp drivetrain if you miss it that much. Otherwise Zen Components make a cage lock feature for Shimano 12sp derailleurs. On the upside, the benefit of adjustable clutch is you can increase tension as the clutch wears (vs. SRAM which isn't user serviceable).
      2) How often are you assembling a cassette? XD has their issues too including seized cassettes to freehub bodies. It's a once in a while task so not too bad.
      X01 is fantastic from a durability standpoint but they are the slowest chains by a huge margin, cost about 50-70% more than Shimano XT and doesn't shift as well (as per the video). It does weigh less (due to the cassette) but there are Garbaruk 12sp HG+ options for Shimano.

    Do not shim the casette, shim the jokey wheel instead!
    With a washer you can move the cassettes further towards the frame. But then the thread on the freehub body only grips a maximum of half the thread.
    If it works, it's fine, if not, you'll need a new freehub body.
    But if you shim the jockey wheels on the derailuer instead of the cassette, you put the derailuer in the right place without affecting the cassette mounting on the hub. The shims for the jockey wheels only need to be about half a mm thick.

    Insane, how people sit on the hype train of SRAM. Shimano is really bad at marketing but their products are superior in every aspect but hype. Incerdible that they can make good quality at low price (most possibly with an obscene amount of margin) even at lower segment. Shimano is only bad at DI2.
    I guess the real winner of SRAM electric shifters are manufactures who can reduce bike assembly time. Other than that hype at large cost.

      Shimano is a company that specializes in fishing gear, that accidentally started making bike components. But judging by the fact that their only response to SRAM’s AXS drivetrain over the past three years has been only a couple of patents, it seems likely that they’ll soon shift their focus back to producing fishing reels and rods - which is honestly great news.
