I saw Biggie/ Axel’s story on The Dodo. The poor guy was owned by an elderly woman (who obviously over fed him) and then became ill, went into hospital, and could no longer look after him. The Foster (now his furever family) have been great, helping him to lose weight slowly (overweight Cats can go into organ failure if their intake drops too quickly). He can now jump up on the sofa. He’s a spicy boy, but DAMN he’s a Cutie-Patootie. 😽😺
I thought foster fail meant he went back to a shelter, not fully adopted by the foster family?
@@lyn6768 not typically! most people use foster fail to mean that THEY failed fostering because they've adopted their furry friend instead of fostering them until they found a new forever home!

Rescue cats are often like that. I had one like that from a shelter. Adopted her when she was 4, she still behaved like that when she was 17.
Standard for cats. TBH the cat probably has joint pain and aches from being so darn overweight.
The fact that his foster fail has already helped him lose eight pounds is amazing! I'm glad he is with a family that cares.
This cat was neglected as much as an emaciated-looking cat. He is now in good hands.

@@yilz123 Usually people who foster a pet keep it until its ready for adoption (until its healthy, old enough, socialized, etc.). Foster fail means, that they keep the pet themselves.
@@tcme11 Yeah, I was so glad & relieved to hear he's away from whoever let him get to that weight. That was cruel to let him get like that. It doesn't matter if it was due to ignorance or whatever, he definitely needed to be rescued.
if you actually listen to the people that adopted him, they fully dispute the idea that he was "neglected" or "abused" because he's an incredibly loving cat and his former family (that went into the hospital) loved him a lot.
Have watched multiple times now... love this cat and the half-hearted aggression with the paw.

There is another cat, Patches. He used to weigh over 40 pounds as well. He has gotten down to the 25 pound stage over the past year.

Same. The family said he was so gentle and sweet. And he did seem it on the GeoBeats video. It just shows that some cats really get scared at the groomers - no matter how kind the groomer is :) And a scared cat will nip.

He's already lost a cat's worth of weight! I've had 3 cats that weighed less than 8 pounds each as healthy adults.
Yes! So cute! I’ve always had healthly weight cats and I recently got a pure breed Maine coon and he’s huge!!! He’s 26 pounds but perfect weight. He’s absolutely stunning and barely stretches to reach the top of counters haha ❤❤
There's a neighbourhood cat who spends a LOT of time at my place curled up on my lap, I doubt he's under 8lb but he's definitely on the skinny side (but still a healthy weight - you know how some cats are just built really lean?). Comparing him to Biggie is kind of a trip. Some of the other comments say that Biggie's lost even more by now so he might have lost a Ricky-worth!
He was the size of 5 cats and bigger than many medium sized dogs............
@@littlebear274 My smallest cat was a Siamese mix who varied between 6 and 6.5 lbs her entire adult life. She was perfectly healthy, lived to 20 years old, she was just naturally all muscle. Probably because she was also my most active cat.
Tangential note: from watching my dogs and cats, it's clear to me that regular exercise is the elixir of youth. The only problem with that is that it requires one to, you know, actually get off the couch and exercise instead of just watching the animals doing it.

I love that Biggie is getting so much coverage! I am working with the same vet/weight loss program, that Biggie is in, Healthy Pet Connect. My orange boy Harley started at 28 pounds when he was brought into our shelter. Harley is down to 20.48 pounds.

Good for you! I adopted a cat a couple of years ago from a hoarding case that was very overweight--nothing like that, she was 19 lbs, but she needed to lose. Most people don't realize that cats can't safely lose weight quickly. Colette lost eight pounds in a year, and we're keeping an eye on her.

How the fuck does a cat even GET that heavy? He must have Maine coon in him.
These overweight cat videos are a reminder to me to never let my rescues get overweight. Two were very fat when I got them. It takes a long time to get the weight off a cat safely. Cutting out the dry food that's full of carbs and replacing with bones that take longer to eat really helped.

What type of bones did you use? As I understood chicken bones are risky.
I'd also like to hear about how to make bones safe to eat.
I had to cut down on the canned food for my cats because the cost got so expensive I mean seriously expensive and instead Incorporated a little more dry food and immediately I started to see them getting fat. Not as big as this boy but I'm keeping my eye on them now. I would love to get them on a raw food diet but they have so far shunned the cooked meat so I don't know how well they're going to take to raw meat
@@KCCAT5 maybe you miscalculated amount of dry food? They have different calories per gram and kitty would take more than usual if you didn’t “convert” wet food in its dry equivalent in fats, protein and other stuff. So, yes, it’s wise to monitor till you find right proportions.

Your patience and sense of humour with each animal you groom is commendable! We are in the process of adopting a rescue dog. He is a Glen of Imaal terrier who was rescued from Korea. Our understanding is that it is rare breed with fewer than 1000 world wide.

So glad Biggie isnt neglected and has a family working on his health. Thats the main thing, overfeeding can be so disasterous. Thank goodness for loving and determined humans ❤❤
People really need to learn that giving in to their pet and giving them treats all the time, especially if they're treats of human food that have a lot more fat and sugar and things in them, is just hurting them. It might be done out of love but it's still abusive.
A lot of these overweight pets belong to senior owners with failing memories. They simply forget they already fed their pet and re-feed them over and over. Such was the case with my mother and her poodle, but she didn’t have a chance to feed him to the extent that he got that overweight, because with her progressing dementia, she missed a lot of his symptoms that turned out to be stage 4 lung cancer. It’s not abuse or neglect a lot of the time.
Wow Biggie was a challenge that's for sure! But he's a gorgeous cat & hopefully his weight loss will continue & he'll have a great life. You are one brave girl; Vanessa.

I find it kind of interesting how cats have so many different eye colours, and orange cats often have that matching orange pigment going on in their eyes. It's kinda cool.
One of my cats has two different eye colours. Yes, she is all white and yes she is deaf.
