It's funny how you mentioned that not everybody does video editing. Because after watching tons of reviews and videos on the newest macbook pro it seems like video editing is the sole activity people use these computers for. xD I have my suspicion that the reason is simply because all these reviewers are youtubers and thus take their video editing very seriously.

perfect. reviewers are reviewing for heavy editors or music engineers. i'm a coder and when not coding just an average user.
      i have a 2012 mb pro, 2015 mb pro and 2020 m1.
upgraded the 12 and 15 years ago and with me just typing code 70% of the time i don't really see no difference once they all boot to the desktop. ok ok starting some applications on the 12 can take up to a minute but its not like killing me.
anyway my goto daily driver is the 15 since it has a bigger screen.
yes the m1 is great but im not all into the hype. it starts programs faster but once i get going typing and clicking around they are all the same with respect to my usage and needs

true that. But again they do video editing isn't it? not only video but music making as well. Need to admit that apple does this better than the others, plus apple will allow you to do that outdoors. Also lets not forget those who work with Xcode.

I upgraded from a 2015 base model 13" MBP to a Mac Studio. The difference is still impressive and I've been using the Studio since December. Even with the honeymoon phase well over, I'm deeply in love with the Studio. I don't expect my next upgrade to take this long, however, unless the Studio doesn't "slow down" over time, like the MBP did.

I had the mid 2012 MBP 13 for a while, it was a hobby computer I bought cheap on eBay and heavily upgraded. It worked surprisingly well for day-to-day tasks. My point is that if a persons needs (and expectations) are low many of the older MBPs will do a competent job when priced right.

I have a mid-2012 MBP with 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. It has been brilliant. But now it cannot cope with Photoshop, Lightroom and even Blender 3.5. The GPU is an Intel Ivy Lake and has a Blender Benchmark of 46. The M2 has a score of 13,000, I think. Yet, it is still perfectly adequate for web browsing but as I do a lot on the three apps I've just mentioned, I am going to have to upgrade. I am just struggling to wait until next year for the M3 as when I invest I expect 7yrs+ usage and often max-out the spec to ensure I get it.

I just bought my first MAC (M2Air), replacing a 9 year old Lenovo. The choice I had at the store, a slower PC with that horrid Windows 11, all 'plastic-ish' feeling to boot. I only need to read emails, light photo/video editing, watching RUclips and Netflix, in a light easy to carry laptop I can relax outside with. I've got an i9/16gig3080 laptop for more serious stuff. I think for the money, I did better for my use case, with the MAC. I added NOMAD so I can login with my domain credentials in sync with all my Windows boxes, and it fits the need perfectly. I would have kept the Lenovo if it only had USB-C thunderbolt or at least USB3, so I could connect an external NVME with good speed but I think it was only USB2 at best...It was time to upgrade and I think I got the best laptop for the money. In the end, base your choice on the need and if your current laptop cuts it or not.

I bought a 256 GB 2017 MacBoom Pro in 2018 because my 11-in 2014 MacBook Air had suffered water damage and wasn't worth repairing. Any replacement for the 11-in HAD to have a Retina display. The "Pro" lasted 2.5 years and needed a new top case due to damage sustained when it was dropped. Then it stopped charging reliably for three weeks. It was time for replacement in November 2021. I chose a base model 7-core M1 MacBook Air from the Apple Refurbished store.
My experience with the damage repair, general performance difference and charging problem mean I'd not recommend the 2017 MacBook pro 13-in for use in 2023.

I have just replaced my 2019 MacBook Pro 13 with i7 processor, 16GB RAM and 2 TB storage with a M2 MacBook Pro 13 with 24GB RAM and 2 TB storage and I am extremely impressed with the performance uplift. My M2's Geekbench 6 single core and multi-core performance is double what my i7 could achieve, and the M2 GPU compute score is over 5x faster than for the i7's iris plus 655 iGPU, and almost identical to my i7 with Blackmagic eGPU (AMD RX580 graphics processor) connected! I prefer the M2's touchbar compared with the i7s, as the ESC key is now a physical key. I used accidentally hit the touch key on i7 MacBook Pro with my little finger and unexpectedly bomb out of an app. The only thing I slightly miss is the i7 having four ports, two per side versus the M2 only have two ports on the left side. OK I have a USB-C hub for when I rarely need more than two ports, but it would have been better if the M2 MacBook Pro 13's two USB 4 ports were on either side of the laptop. I also prefer the larger keys of the butterfly keyboard compared the magic keyboard.

Thank you for this video!!! I have the MBP 13" 2017 with Intel Core i7, GPU 650 and 16 Mb RAM. I mainly use it for photo and video editing with apps like the Adobe Suite, Davinci Resolve and a few others. I sooooo resonate with what you say about the jet fans🚀🚀 and the heat on the touch bar 🔥🔥 It was like that since it was brand new. At the beginning I thought there was sth wrong with it, but I have been using it for the past 6 years and I've never had any issues with it. Of course now I find that it lags when editing 4K videos, especially when I start adding certain effects, and also with 48 megapixels RAW photos. The fans go crazy with those 🤪
I'm planning to upgrade to the MBP 14" M2. I'm really doubting whether the M2 Pro chip is enough or if I should go for the M2 Max. Do you have any comments on that? From what I see you're using and M2 Pro. Am I right?

The 14" MacBook (particularly the Max variant) will get hotter and noisier than the 16" version because it's smaller and can't dissipate heat as well. The tradeoff is that of course it's smaller and cheaper than the 16". That being said it's still nowhere near the level of the old Intel MacBooks. And it will only get hotter/louder when you're doing something intensive like rendering.

Technology reviews might as well be obselete now. Frankly i have a 2018 intel i5 macbook pro on monterrey and its perfect. Why? Super fast, all plugins are supported etc and its fool proof. We've got to a point in this century where it doesn't really matter what you buy past 2018ish , its going ro work excellent. Phones computers tablets. The only thing you need to be concerned about is : batteries naturally degrade over time, how long is software support? How long are security updates.
Lets be practical, if youre trying to edit 4k videos from your phone on a 2014 model macbook, no ...dont expect great performance.
Its that simple. Everything else is just opinionated bs. If you do light work - then choose air, if you do heavy work then choose a pro.

I’m making this upgrade just now but getting the 16Gb ram and 512Gb ssd MacBook Pro 13 M2 going from the cheapest 2017 MacBook Pro. The 2017 has given up on photo editing basically and it takes time to switch between photos and starting a edit in Adobe software spins up the fan and just takes to long so it was time to move on. Back when i got the 2017 it was a monster workhorse even beating my then gaming laptop with 8core AMD Ryzen 16Gb ram because in Windows it could crash with the large 50 raw files panorama while the MacBook Pro never crashed. Sure it took about an hour and 80Gb of swap but it came through. So now when i’m moving on one of my kids get the 2017. It will be enough for school work and FaceTime with friends plus some streaming. However the 2017 retina display still beats a tone of the pc laptops today. I also compose music so my music programs will like the new M2 much better 🙂
