  • Blame it on the Director or the Editor but this scene is so over the top that the bottom ceased to exist that day. Almost equally bad is Stephen Boyd as Frankie Fane. Elke Sommer has a great rack ( her head as a hat rack) Still very watchable guilty pleasure movie. Tony Bennett never made another feature film (outside of some cameos as himself in later films), and later "won" the Golden Turkey Award for "Worst Performance by a Popular Singer" Keep an eye out for Barney Millers Jack Soo about 30 lbs. thinner than his Detective Nick Yehmanha' days. To be clear if this vid mocks anything it is the movie not Tony Bennett. Tony could make you cry but in song not acting. Cheek to Cheek if that song don't get to you you're already dead.

I totally disagree with the critics concerning Tony Bennett's acting ability. Tony did not overeact. He gave a great performance in this scene in the movie. His style reminded me of Al Pacino. Tony's acting is a passionate performance. He truly displayed sincere feeling. Im sure he would have been like Frank Sinatra who later found success and a new found recognition in the movies. Too bad Tony did not persue more acting roles. But despite that I as well as millions of others will always admire him for his music and his humanitarianism.God bless you Tony.

Totally agree. The person who posted this and calls it overacting has no idea what in the hell he's talking about and probably knows nothing about the technique of acting. When my wife and I watch this last week, we both looked at each other and said, "that was one of the better acted scenes in the film.

I thought Tony was amazing in that role and disappointed he didn't do more acting like Dean and Frank did

According to a Paramount press release when the film was initally released in March 1966, producers Clarence Greene and Russell Rouse were watching "THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW" [March 1, 1965] when Tony made a guest appearance, and "were struck by an extraordinary warmth and sensitivity which came over on the television screen". They tested him for the role of "Hymie Kelly"........and he got the part. It was the only movie in which he appeared as someone other than "himself".

RIP Hymie Kelly. Your performance might not have wowed the critics, but it was more fun than most of the ones that have won actual Oscars, and no one will ever forget it.

SOOOO True. Have this movie on bluray. One can watch it over and over. It's a beautiful film and, yes, so much fun. I can't find an obituary that mentions this movie.

"You lie down with pigs, you come up smellin' like garbage." The most entertaining bad movie of all time. I have seen it many, many times. RIP, Mr. Bennett.

Yeah, well maybe Tony Bennett as Hymie was over the top, exaggerated bovine scatology...but he did it without profanity, he was CLEAN, BABY!

I just watched this movie on TCM. Wow! They sure paid the real movie stars a lot of money to appear as themselves. Bob hope got $550,000 in 1966 money (worth $5,133,281 in 2023) and Hedda Hopper $200,000 (1.8 million now). Frank Sinatra got $100,000 (933K now.)

The only "criticism" one can heap on this is that Tony Bennett sounds, at the beginning, as though he is doing an impression of a ferocious Jimmy Durante.

Maybe because I don't know much about Tony Bennett and I haven't put him in a box but this doesn't seem bad at all. It's all one level of intensity but that's really down to the writing. He's basically Joe Pesci but with old world charm.

I thought that Tony Bennett did a fine performance in this movie. Maybe back when this film was made, Americans didn't yet understand the Italian culture. Too bad...

Why is this over acting?. Film snobs. Brando over acts, can’t stand mumbles.
