  • In today's episode I attempt to make a carbon fiber grill for the motorhome.
Funny how projects that seems simple ends up taking the most effort.
Was it a success? Watch and see!

Yes........ Hmmmm, that grill in brushed aluminum would look steller....either way... That was awesome to watch.

I like the ali a lot (realised this only after making it) but the problem is I used very thin gauge as it was only supposed to be a mold

I say hang the carbon attempt on your wall of "yeah? well at least I tried!", and then, and only if you want, you can wrap the aluminum part with carbon-look vinyl.

😁😁 as it stands now it sounds like the best option

Try a vacuum bag - you’ll get great results and the finished part will be much stronger.

      I think I'll give it a try

@@BroughBuilt it works really well. Just to control the resin bleed add haler - it’s kind like clingfilm with lots of holes. Or whatever the latest alternative is. ( been out of F1 for 25 years now )
Add a bleeder cloth that’ll absorb the excess resin and allow a even vacuum over the entire piece.

    Danie, you amaze me.
I am tempted to say (to save time and effort): Why not just do a rough black finish paint (Raptor coating) on the aluminium grille you already have?
As for the details in the carbon fibre - yeah you really need to do a proper mould and vacuum-bagging, but I am nevertheless very impressed by your methods, thoughts and tools that went into this.
This does bring me to a question though: You seem incredibly handy and not afraid of trying stuff. I saw you use software, so why not just make the jump to make your own CNC router from alu-extrusions? This way you could set the CNC router to mill MDF whilst you keep busy with other stuff. Then you can just mould into that? Expensive for a one-of-one, but figured you could find a use for it in higher numbers?
Anyway, exciting as always. I'll keep watching!
PS, I remember reading about ducted radiators vs. radiator openings somewhere a long time ago. It was for sportscars though. Perhaps if cooling is ever an issue, you can build a duct behind the grille to make sure almost all incoming air passes through the radiator.

Thanks for your amazing input Schalk. I also noticed that the ali actually looks pretty nice but unfortunately I made it from a very thin gauge so I would have to make a new one if it was going to be the final product. I think I'm gonna give vacuum baging a go (never done it before).
I really want to one day start using cnc especially for a future project I have in mind but unfortunately my computer skills are very much lacking at the moment.
As far as the intake goes you are probably right, I might have to duct it so the air gets concentrated to the radiators.

@@BroughBuilt I wish I could add more info. I know there are many home-built CNC machines that run on Open Source software out there, so the info is out there for DIYers.
If I had the money to throw at something like that, I probably would have.

I just spent so much time (and money) on the carbon that it seems a shame to through away... But, I might just decide on hangin up that idea and going for the Ali in stead. It really looks good

the easiest way is to make a vacuum bag and you'll have no more air bubbles!

Thanks Geoff. In retrospect I should have put the carbon on the outside of the grill and then put a couple layers of resin over it
