    How Paul was with geddy was how I was when I met Paul. Bump ahead tour. He signed ALL my stuff at a meet and greet ( had a lot-Mr Big and Racer X ) and handed me a pick. Then ended up catching the first pick he threw out at the show that night. Ace Frehley happened to be there that night too. Paul did the Alive II ace solo!!!! Coolest night for a 15-16? year old.

    Wow. I'm 54, & Rush 2112 inspired me so much I picked up guitar, determined to learn that whole album side of some of the HARDEST goddamn rock ID ever heard.
    Greatest accomplishment of my life, I'm beyond grateful. Then I meet Paul, & the ease & speed he played solos, mind blowing, humbling, & then what what??!? This immortal wonder is "just a 'guy'"? Kinda goofy, childlike, embarrassingly happy all the time disarmingly humble guy?
    And here I watch in rapt attention as I vicariously live out thru Paul's vivid & passionate recalling of one of the high points of his remarkable journey as a guitarist, (a dream I too held close of jamming with the '3 men from Willowdale') 😎
    of doing just that?
    Hands down, BEST damn rock story I've ever heard, barre none. (Thanks Paul!)

    Rush was my first concert. Moving Pictures. It was awesome! I had this giant beer I had to hold with two hands and a nice joint and I was only 15. But they really lost me around the time signals came out. I was going WTF is this shit? I wanted more rock style instead they slowly became a new wave keyboard pop rock prog band for quite a while.

      I remember him doing a solo and using the drill. Then for some reason he raised the drill up to his head. He had long hair then and I immediately thought “that’s going to get stuck in his hair” and sure enough, that’s exactly what happened. When he realized that the drill was stuck, he walked off stage and Billy quickly came out and started soloing while the crew worked on getting the drill out of Paul’s hair.

    I saw Rush and Mr. Big on consecutive tours going through Denver. Both were great shows. I saw PG with the G3 tour in 2007 (also in Denver). Petrucci is my favorite guitar player and Satch is certainly near the top of my list, but I would have to say PG owned the stage that night. He appears to be the most humble, non-pretentious guitar hero out there--Satch and Petrucci are probably right there, too. PG knows he's good and has a sense of humor about himself, but doesn't have the Malmsteen attitude or play totally over the top all the time like Vai often does.

  • @gr8guitarplayer

    I saw Rush 3 or 4 times back in the day. One tour was with Mr. Big. I remember 2 things about them: As I recall, Rush always had a different supporting act each tour, but Mr. Big was the only band that went out with them during 2 consecutive tours. And, as much as I was completely blown away by Mr. Big, when Rush took the stage, you could tell THEY were the highlight of the night. Not to take anything away from Mr. Big, but it was like..., ok, those were the boys. Now here come the men. They (Rush) just took it to another much higher level.

      @@gr8guitarplayer Yup. Eddie was 23 when VH1 was released. That said, he was playing Eruption in clubs in some form years before that. Also, Paul was already a guitar hero at 18 with Racer X and the solo Frenzy was his Eruption moment. EVH, Gilbert, Malmsteen, and even Rhoads (23 when recording with Ozzy) were all young when they were crowned with guitar god status.

    According to the contract I saw for this tour, Mr. Big was was being paid comparatively nothing to be support for Rush. For a two-night show at the massive Alpine Valley Music Theatre on July 16th and 17th of 1990, Rush was paid $600,000 ($300k a night) and Mr. Big was paid a total of $4000 ($2k a night). That's not $600k and you need to pay for this and that out of it, that's take home money out of the $1.5 million the show producers estimated to take in. Plus, Rush splits that 3 ways instead of 4. I guess that's why they call it paying your dues I guess, or in this case, NOT being paid. lol Gotta think Talas and Racer X brought in much bigger coin just to play at a dinky club, let alone what Billy was getting from the DLR gig.

    • @gr8guitarplayer
      @gr8guitarplayer 6 лет назад +1

      Rush almost didn't make it. So they deserve every penny they were paid, and it has nothing to do with what the opening band was being paid. A boss once told me, "You never compare yourself to what someone else is making, and you make your own deal." I'm sure Mr. Big was quite happy making $500 per night. It was only about a 4 month tour. I'd've been fine with that, no matter what the main act was being paid. Especially since they were also making royalties from their music, AND getting exposure (probably worth more than the money by itself.)
