I think it makes him very sympathetic - to me it is always fun to watch and listen to him, wether he is playing or just explaining or even talking ... I remember him with a couple of other guitarists in an interview where everyone was talking about his career, his playing style and his equipment and Paul started "hey, what a lovely day and what a pleasant to be here" :-)

This is what a gear/rig video should include! Not only does he go through what his gear is, he also plays example of what each pedal does in terms of his sound. Other "rig rundowns" with other musicians are not this detailed and enjoyable! Nothing against the other musicians, I just know that Paul Gilbert is a very humble and interesting person (saw him live in a small guitar seminar and his personality is just incredible!)

Awesome plug for the JCM2000. Highly recommend picking one up. While the made-in-England versions are fewer and far between these days, you can probably find an English DSL50 Halfstack for $1000 on Craig's List or elsewhere. If you're a fan of the Marshall sound and appreciate the history, the JCM2000 is actually the last amp of the original lineup that began with the Super Lead (Plexi) back in the 60s... so you get a rich history and tonal palette with the JCM2000 that you wouldn't otherwise get with the JVM lineup (which is "modern Marshall" by all respects).

One thing I love about Paul G is that his playing doesn't need to be hidden behind a ton of overdrive and distortion. His leads are pure rock. Look at his lesson video from the 80's he always said be able to play CLEAN - and not hide behind the distortion in your tone. Cheers from Canada Paul !!

Most folks don't realize how important the compression/sustainer pedal really is and how it can help with your overall tone. To me, it's the most important pedal in my signal chain besides my NS2 noise gate. That keeps my rig quiet, the Comp/Sus keeps it level and really holds a note when you want it to.

I love El Pablo's playing. He seems like a great guy, very nice, has close to no ego at all, very insightful and helpful (his instructional DVDs are both terrifying and intensely inspiring), and he has killer tone. He's also quite unique, and strikes a great balance between being different, similar, and most of all, himself. A lot of guys are either way out there (love him, but Steve Vai definitely qualifies for this), or too similar (ie, they don't have enough of their own character or style), and as such, aren't quite themselves enough to boost them up higher in terms of being "guys you gotta check out."
In short, Paul, his tone, and his attitude are amazingly spot on.

  • @LilOlFunnyBoy

C minor. He's tuned down a half step so playing in in C# position. It's a trick that he uses often - repeating a simple 2 string pattern up 3 octaves on each string pair. In This case it's 1,2,4,b6 (C, Db, F, Ab). In regular tuning that's 8 & 10 on low E, 8 & 11 on A str. Then up an octave - 10 & 12 on D str, 10 & 13 on G str. Finally 13 & 15 on B str, 13 & 16 on top E. The reason your ears prick up at that point is the key shift - he has been noodling in Bb minor then shifts to C.

You can see that some are patched thru the loop and others are going straight into the front of the amp. The overdrives and distortion are front end, with the tuner and compressor as well. The rest are in the loop. You can really hear the difference between the line level and instrument level. If they were all going into the front end, then the effects would be overpowering, especially where he has the knobs set. Pretty straight up signal path.

I'll tell you how nice this guy is. Way back when he was in his second year of teaching at GIT I think or slightly before that I went out there to visit a friend that was going there and to meet Paul Gilbert. When I met him I mad a remark about liking a song off of his Mike Varney Demo that he sent me. He said "gee, I don't have a copy of that any more" I said I have one with me and you can dub it if you like.We went to his apartment on Franklin street and ended up loaning me a big bag of his..
