Reason #1: Run Capacitor: The run capacitor helps the capacitor run after it starts. If your refrigerator won’t start, it could be that the run capacitor has failed. If testing fails, the run capacitor may have to be replaced.

Reason #2: Cold Control: The part you set the refrigerator temperature with is the cold control. If your fridge won’t start, the cold control could be going bad and need to be repaired or replaced.
Reason #3: Defrost timer: This part controls the defrost cycle of the refrigerator, switching the fridge between defrost and cooling cycles. If the refrigerator compressor won’t start, the defrost timer could have failed.
Reason #4: Start Relay: The start relay sends power to the start and run windings of the compressor and stops when the compressor has gotten up to speed.
Reason #5: Compressor Start Device: The compressor start device provides power to the compressor. If the refrigerator won’t start, it could be a bad compressor start device that needs to be replaced.
Reason #6: Main Control Board: The main control board sends power to the compressor. If the compressor won’t start, the control board could have failed and needs to be fixed or replaced.
The 'Top 6 Reasons Your Refrigerator is Won't Start' video covers all major brands of Refrigerator, including: GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Kenmore/Sears, Samsung, KitchenAid, and others.

I have watched many videos in the past when I had an issue, and none were informative and well put together as this one. Bravo I say!

Thank you so much for this excellent troubleshooting video. My 2000 Roper refrigerator (made by Whirlpool) was freezing in the freezer compartment but not cooling the refrigerator compartment. That was easy to discover the fan was not circulating the cold air. I ordered a replacement motor but before it arrived I tested it again and noticed the fan tired to spin. A bit of WD40 got the fan spinning like a top. I was happily cleaning the unit as the temperature was dropping thinking all was good. Then suddenly it completely stopped working. It would not turn back on. I ordered a new thermostat thinking that was the problem. After watching your video I tested the old thermostat with my multimeter and found out the thermostat was fine. Working my way through your video it turns out the problem was the defrost timer. I moved the gears with a screwdriver as you demonstrated and the compressor started right up. Looks like I will need to order a replacement. You saved me a ton of money. The refrigerator was given to me for FREE and ran for several years before I had any problems. So glad I could get it running again because I know the new units are more complicated and last only about 4-5 years. Thanks again!!

Thank you. Was the defrost timer control. Only video that I've seen that mentioned it. My wife will be disappointed that we can't get a new fridge. On my GE fridge, an older 18 cu ft version, there is a plug you can take off right next to the temp control dial and get direct access to rotate the shaft of the timer.

How was the cold control panel removed? My kenmore has two bolts that are completely inaccessible without removing the front part of the panel, which seems like I can't do with the panel in place in the fridge.

My Amana refrigerator quite running last year. I replaced the hard start compactor and it worked for a year. Then it quite running again so I tried replacing the start compactor again and it didn't work. I replaced the run compacitor and it started. Ran for 1 day. Then wouldn't restart. I know it is getting power to the compressor because it pulls 800 watts but will only start after it sits. Then it will repeat. Run till shuts off because cold then not restart.... Is this the point I should be testing the compressor?

Not sure how to fix it, but you may save a lot in energy costs by upgrading to a newer model. 32 years is a long time!
