Hey guys! It looks like Brutal Japan will be removed from Steam on the 16th of this month. The developer wants to do a massive overhaul. It's great they're going to give it some much needed love, but that means some of you may not get to play it. So if you're looking to take a stab at it, the way it is, go ahead and grab it while the grabbin's good!
originally dead space was gonna be system shock 3 but couldnt secure the rights and then they saw resident evil 4 so they copied that. Check out that now defunct system shock 3 trailer to see the similarities.
the best way to describe the body movement in phobia is to compare it to resident evil 7 in which i had to wait for the shotgun pumping animation after every shot before i could move, in a fps game.
Hey there! I'm the guy who animated the death screens for Murderhouse! Happy to know you loved it! Its easily my favorite game I've ever worked on. If you liked MH you'd also probably like Bloodwash, which is also published by Puppet Combo and which I also did some animations for! Its less Survival Horror-y than MH but even still its a really fun exploration horror game.
Dude, that's awesome!! You worked on one hell of a banger! This was my first Puppet Combo game, and I can assure you it wont be the last. Very very good stuff!
@@AvalancheReviews Nun Massacre is another banger by Puppet Combo, very little combat (kinda like Murder House) but damn tense and with the kind of key hunting and light puzzles you'd want in a horror game. And also try SH4 because it pretty experimental and it's story is pretty good and antagonist is also really great. And also try shattered memories it's pretty great reimagining.
Jasper Byrne loves Silent Hill just as much as we do. One of his earliest (and free to play) works is a straight up demake of Silent Hill 2 called "Soundless Mountain II".
Sorry to see you didn't like Lone Survivor, but if you're ever willing to try it again, hopefully the remake is a better experience for you (it has 4K and controller support). Super Lone Survivor comes out this October.
These were a ton of fun to watch so thanks for taking the time. I devote all my spare time nowadays to making art - meaning none for games - so getting to hear about all these cool titles really makes my day. I'm glad the survival horror genre is still alive and thriving💜
I was very surprised you didn't enjoy Lone Survivor. But much respect to explaining why, great video 📹 Also, COMPLETELY agree with you on the map criticism. That literally blocked my progress a couple times in a huge way
Another new content of survival horror clone games. You’ve given me so much recommendations for playing these indie title horror games. There’s so many I don’t know which one to choose from. Thanks for making another video dude.
It's worth it to play Heaven Dust before Heaven Dust 2 because if you beat HD you unlock a couple unique items at the beginning of HD2. One being Leons outfit from RE2 and a Mauser C96 pistol RE fans will recognize as the Red 9 from RE4. While it can't be upgraded it starts off doing more damage and has a bigger magazine then the standard pistol and looks cool.
Can't believe I completely missed vol. 3 until now!! I absolutely love this series. The comment about the Iron Pineapple style is right on the money, and I personally am all for it! Rock on!!
Great work, Jared! So many good and interesting titles. Fobia was a nice surprise, another good title from a Brazilian developer. I hope this trend continues! Thanks!
It's nice to See Murder House up there on the list The studio Puppet Combo have quite literally built up a reputation of having some of the best Survival horror Games on the Indie scene. They all their work is amazing and i could not recommend Playing them enough. personal favorites of mine are Feed me Billy and Planet of the bloodthirsty Santa.
WTF? I was just finished watching your six hours video about Silent Hill and decided to see the most recent one and I stumble with you recomending Fobia! I'm one of the developers, that is why it shook me so hard! XD First, I apologize by the amount of shit you reported you're having for not finished the game yet. Brazilian gamers can be really... let's call it 'passionated' about stuff. Actually just the fact that you got interest on our game made me very flattered, specially after watching the 6 hours straight of your SH video. Pulsatrix is a very small team with a restrained budget, making our debut game, so it makes us very proud that the community responded so well to Fobia. We are current working to fix some reported bugs and to implement some features to make the game a more seamless experience. Well, I hope you eventually end the game and that you got a good experience overall! Thank you very much for the compliments and I'll pass forward your critics. And sorry for my bad English, I never actually studied the language. Cheers!
Hey Jared, just a quick question: When you are playing games on steam are you using big picture mode? Because if not, you definitely should. You can remap all the buttons for any game using any controller, and it works 99% of the time.
It's so good to see so many decent RE clones out there. My wishlist just added a couple more games! Thank you for sharing these with us in this trilogy of vids
Just in time for my lunch break from work. Thanks for all the great content brotha! Hope you’re having a blast in Japan, and that you convinced kojima to ease up on the cutscenes
Another awesome video. Thanks, Jared. And yeah, me and a navy buddy were stuck overnight while super drunk in a Japanese subway station maybe 15 years ago. It can be a touch creepy. Can’t wait to see what you cook up next. Cheers.
I definitely recommend giving the game "Prototype Mansion - Used No Cover" a play, it's a silly little cute parody of RE1, if you've played the original RE's you'll get a kick out of all the jokes they throw in. Surprisingly it has more Survival aspects than I would of expected it to have, and its a breath of fresh air to play a horror game that doesn't take itself so seriously; while still being fun to play! There's even a part 2 that came out a little while ago.
Yeah, Prototype Mansion's definitely worth including in the series. It's about 30-40 minutes long (plus a 10-15 minute "Overtime" epilogue) and is a pretty neat short parody of RE1. The sequel, Garden Variety Body Horror, is longer with a larger map and more complex inventory management, though it switched to a sort of Mario 64 style camera instead of RE1 fixed camera angles. Kind of a shame the devs never got around to finishing the story with a third game.
I totally feel you with the Lone Survivor situation, i tried to get into it twice, but none of them got me hooked and abandoned it soon after the beginning.
I am obsessed with the HD2 aesthetic. it’s soo cute and gory. And i’m excited you’re reviewing puppet combo games! there’s also Bloodwash which is a nice lil experience but that one’s not survival horror. Also, Puppet Combo did a huge update on their Nun Massacre game it might be worth to check out.
Love these videos, I've never been one for Resident Evil/ survival horror in general before because I'm a big wuss, but recently I found myself putting on RE-mastered for some reason and l fell in love with it and am currently running through RE2 and I'm tempted to by the lot as they're on sale just now, I'm planning on a run through of silent hill as well and adding some of these to my list for when my Steam deck gets here, thank you for the awesome content, you can really feel the love and appreciation you have for this genre coming through, especially when it's done well, keep up the great work!
Another great video. I realize that as you said the amount of titles available is limited, but I wouldn't mind a series were you try demos and comment on them.
Thank you for this fantastic series! I am a big survival horror fan and seem to always be wanting to find more. I'm picky. I just added Heaven Dust 2 to my library and am excited to start it this evening! Never would have heard of it unless you mentioned it in this series. Keep it comin'!
I'm loving every RE related video you've done, I've recently got back into the RE series with the 2 & 3 remakes (I don't play a lot of games period either) and I'm enjoying the hell out of everything you're doing. Also the Silent Hill allegory is completely taken from David Lynch's Lost Highway which he later made way better with Mulholland Drive!
Duuude! It's been Vol 3 and while I'm excited you picked this series up again, but I'm sad you haven't found Darkwood! If you want survival horror, look no further! Sorry I’m late watching this one. These videos have added so many games to my current/ back log. Keep up the great content and keep up the awesomeness.
Love this series. Managed to add a few to my own wish list from this series. A stand out one had been Song of Horror, and Murder House from this video looks good to. Perhaps you could a sequel series of sorts of Modern Resident Evil 4 clones?
Some games you may have missed: Prototype Mansion - Used No Cover Garden Variety Body Horror - Rare Import Darkwood THE DEVIL HAUNTS ME The Night of the Scissors Daymare: 1998
Night of the scissors felt too much like a clocktower game. I really liked it though. i was thinking about making a short mention section for it and a few other titles, but I figure I'll just save em for another video and give them a little more time.
Couldn't help but notice you haven't got to Glass Staircase yet. It was Puppet Combo's first real larger budget RE-like. Moody and atmospheric as hell.
The people complaining that these first taste videos don't complete the whole game are simply short sighted. They don't know how to delay their own selfish desires for the even bigger bounty awaiting us on the hill. Full, in depth, game reviews of the games on this list!
Man, I 100% agree with the Lone Survivor segment. It's got everything I enjoy, but I get bored every time I try it. No ideia why, but maybe after this vid I'll try once again 😅
So after a nice full day at work I come home, check my RUclips feed and see The Wild World of Modern RE clones 3, boy at this moment I know this is exactly what I'll be watching as I chill out and have dinner 😎
I'm absolutely stoked for Signalis. I'll just boot up the demo, and mess with stuff. The Radio module is something I can tell I'm going to fiddle with every five seconds, just to see if anything new comes up. Also... ACTHUNG ACHTUNG *doo doo doo*
Fuck yeah i swear Signalis is like the only other game apart from Darktide that i wanna buy this year. Just so you know, The King In Yellow (the book she picks up in the end of the demo) is an actual book released in 1895 that precedes Lovecraft but influenced him a lot and delas with a similar kind of horror, and it appears that Signalis is actually using the King In Yellow Mythos on it's story, as she sees what i assume is Carcosa (a city) in her visions and the Pallid Mask who is a character in the book also appears in one of the trailers. I recommend reading it, but you probably don't need to in order to enjoy the game.
What a pleasant surprise, I don't remember you mentioning making a part 3 on any of the streams but then again the streams are very late at night so I was probably tired.
I'm glad somebody else who loves horror games agrees with me on Lone Survivor. I actually finished the game, myself, but I found it to not be even remotely scary, the gameplay to be boring, and the story to be nonsense whenever it's not just ripping off better media. It was a slog to complete, but at least it was fairly short and I wanted to give it a fair shake. Either way, feels like everyone I know who has played it loves it, to the point that I feel gaslit into thinking I'm either crazy or misremembering.
Fobia looks incredible, defo one I'll pick up at some point but Brutal Japan, that game looks like it's only missing Benny Hill music lmao For me, Murderhouse's strength is it's atmosphere, it perfectly captured the 80's ultra-low budget Video Nasty feel. Many games and even films have attempted to replicate that style in recent years but few have truly succeeded. The devs nailed that aspect IMO.
Most games that try to do what Fobia does with its full body awareness system fall under that trap, though some didn't - Syndicate 2012 and Wolfenstein The New Colossus are two games which managed to have that without having any of the problems commonly associated with that.
While on my combat tour in Afghanistan, the PS Vita was the only real respite I had in 2013-14. I got a hold of Lone Survivor on PSN there and I adored it. I played through it twice, getting some of the harder endings, which I rarely do, and just put me into an immersed mindset that I was dying for back then. That being said... I can't play it again or get interested since. Maybe it was situation, how it resonated with me then, the atmosphere, or just a game not good for replayability but I could not play Lone Survivor on PS4 later on, even though I had access to it and wanted to try it again. I'm sure though in your case, playing with keyboard couldn't have helped.
The whole time I was playing it, I was wanting that kind of a connection. It was weird. I just wasn't enjoying it and I'm still not sure why. I think playing it on the go like you might help.
@@AvalancheReviews the game talks about the "Ritual," I was already playing it at night and using headphones, but that likely helped in it. Also, the Vita version didn't have the difficulty switch problems either.
Still no Devil Inside. Thanks for the Heaven Dust, it's looks pretty cool. Might buy in the bundle later. Wish I knew about them when summer sale was going....
If you comb through Super Best Friend's Play Shitstorm of Scariness playlists, you'll find tons more games. Not all of them are RE clones, but some of them were still phenomenal!!
I feel the same about my Lone Survivor. My friend that loves horror as much as I do, recommended this game. I've attempted to play it a couple of times, but I just couldn't click with it.
thanks to you i decided to give Heaven Dust 2 a try via demo and shortly after i decided to buy it. Really quality game and a pleasant surprise thanks to your video
Lone Survivor is a weird one, had it on multiple platforms and it SHOULD be the literal definition of what i love about survival horror and interesting, new gameplay mechanics and perspectives! But it just doesnt sit right for some reason... Its not like i havent tried to restart it like 5 times, but I fall off every time after around 2 hours or so, So yeah, im 100% with you 😅👍🏻
“Brutal Japan” follow a specific trend (which already actually died 2 years ago btw) resembling style of games by a developer called “Puppet Combo”, this styles uses the same aesthetics and clunky controls that you mentioned in Brutal Japan so, it’s not likely to be fixed and this isn’t an early access in fact this is and will be the final game
Thank you for making these! I'm getting a lot of great ideas for "Wicked Wednesday" content with my friends! We get online on Wed and one of us plays a scary game and streams it via Discord, we rotate who plays a game and it's a lot of fun.
There's a free Prologue for CryoSpace on steam now that says coming soon. Maybe they've worked out a lot of the problems from the demo. I hope so cause it has tons of potential..
You know, for almost any other game genre, the thought of exhaustively covering every entry would be laughable. Yet for horror, survival horror especially, it's rather doable. It's truly strange how such a consistently successful genre has so few entries, even considering the modern revival.
Brazilian talking here. The only small tiny little gripe in Fobia that I got a little disappointed is something that I've seen in videos is that, ironically, the portuguese voice acting and script sounds like it were translated from english, so they sound more like old dubbed hollywood movie characters than actual brazilian people, but considering that it's not that easy to have access to nice acting for a ton of money that actually makes sense... but the rest of it looks amazing
If you ever decide to make a 4th video, I strongly recommend giving Darkwoods a look. Gameplay wise it's heavily reminiscent of that top-down WW1 Trench survival horror. But trade WW1 trenches for...messed up polish folklore.
Hey guys! It looks like Brutal Japan will be removed from Steam on the 16th of this month. The developer wants to do a massive overhaul.
I really did try to like it this time, but I just was not feeling it.
Love your content man, keep up the good work !
Always a treat to see that you've uploaded new content Jared. Much respect from the UK!
Thanks for the love man. Cheers!!!
One of my favorite series on RUclips
I always thought the dude in lone survivor had just a big ass smile on his face. Never realized it was a mask.
If you do a part 4 (I really hope you do, I'm loving this series!) please play Eternal Evil!
So glad to know Fobia is good! Keep almost picking it up so now I will!
Murder House. Your only armed with one hell of a hair cut 🤣
So glad you’re still doing this I liked the first one
How have you not mention the Penumbra series? They are fantastic survival horror.
just finished heaven dust 1 and 2...really looking forward to 3.
its got me in a mood to replay remake next :)
Still no Devil Inside.
Thanks for the Heaven Dust, it's looks pretty cool. Might buy in the bundle later. Wish I knew about them when summer sale was going....
I'm thinking about starting up a new entry in the more retro RE clone series. That'll be on there.
Thank god for this video
I'm not even the religious type but it was the first thing I thought lmao
A revival of survival horror is enough to make anyone a little more religious. HA!
If you comb through Super Best Friend's Play Shitstorm of Scariness playlists, you'll find tons more games. Not all of them are RE clones, but some of them were still phenomenal!!
Another avalanche video to kick back and relax too? Yes please!
Custom made for the maximum relaxation possible or your money back
The Fobia headbob is brutal!
In case you haven't, I would recommend checking darkwood is not a resident evil clone but is the greatest survival horror of the last 10 years
I feel the same about my Lone Survivor. My friend that loves horror as much as I do, recommended this game. I've attempted to play it a couple of times, but I just couldn't click with it.
Lone Surviver's character looks like he has a huge grin on his face, not a mask. Haha
Dude, banging series. Appreciate it.
Have you covered or plan to cover D or D2 if you haven't already they seem to be right up your alley.
great video like always :) question have you alredy talk about evil tonight?
thanks to you i decided to give Heaven Dust 2 a try via demo and shortly after i decided to buy it. Really quality game and a pleasant surprise thanks to your video
WOW Heaven Dust 2 is a serious upgrade, will be picking that up!
Lone Survivor is a weird one, had it on multiple platforms and it SHOULD be the literal definition of what i love about survival horror and interesting, new gameplay mechanics and perspectives! But it just doesnt sit right for some reason...
Its not like i havent tried to restart it like 5 times, but I fall off every time after around 2 hours or so,
So yeah, im 100% with you 😅👍🏻
“Brutal Japan” follow a specific trend (which already actually died 2 years ago btw) resembling style of games by a developer called “Puppet Combo”, this styles uses the same aesthetics and clunky controls that you mentioned in Brutal Japan so, it’s not likely to be fixed and this isn’t an early access in fact this is and will be the final game
Thank you for making these! I'm getting a lot of great ideas for "Wicked Wednesday" content with my friends!
We get online on Wed and one of us plays a scary game and streams it via Discord, we rotate who plays a game and it's a lot of fun.
Hey Jared!
You should check Chilla's Art games too, they have some really cool games focused on puzzles and exploration
If you happen to have a Vr Headset Organ Quarter is basically Silent Hill in vr. With the limited inventory, supplies and save rooms.
There's a free Prologue for CryoSpace on steam now that says coming soon. Maybe they've worked out a lot of the problems from the demo. I hope so cause it has tons of potential..
Survival Horror games are like ammunition, napkins, and deodorant sticks: No matter how much have you can never have enough.
Konnichiwa, Jared-san! I watched streamers play Fobia and Murder House. Both are awesome.
I'm a big fan of em both. Very good shit!
