It is absolutely staggering how effective the visuals are for a game that is, for fuck sakes, going on 15 years old soon. Just like you say, it's the lighting system and art direction. F.E.A.R. is another prime example of dynamic lighting making old games look fantastic to this day.

Dead Space was the same experience I had with Mass Effect. The first 30 minutes made me think I wasn’t going to enjoy the game but at some point I found myself transfixed and so immersed in the world that completing it was the last thing I wanted. In both cases I discovered these games long after they came out so I didn’t have to wait long for the next installment which made the experience even better.

I don’t think there’s a RUclipsr that puts so much detail and passion in to their description of game reviews also I think your voice is the perfect tone for the commentary over the video. It never gets boring and keeps me watching till the end. After I watch these retrospectives I have to go out and get the games myself to see if I agree and feel the same way about the games. It’s costing me a fortune especially trying to get the original Silent Hill versions and Resident Evil series on the multiple platforms, luckily Dead Space seems fairly cheap on all platforms at the minute! Keep up the excellent work and consider Gears of War and Hitman retrospectives as a different journey to take as I’d be interested in your thoughts on such game series?👍

Dead Space is a survival horror game by definition. Limited resources, tons of enemies, and an end goal to survive and escape the situation. Playing it on easy mode will absolutely leave you with excess supplies.
Its still a survival horror game lol

  • @xxprototypexx5056
    @xxprototypexx5056 Год назад +3

Also, I hate to break it to you, but this game sreies IS survival horror. It has ammo management, ways to kill enemies while conserving ammo, and even ways of avoiding encounters altogether by running away from enemies to survive. Both Resident Evil and Silent hill have this and they are both considered survival horror.
If you consider Resident Evil a survival horror, then you also consider Dead Space a survival horror. Dead Space was made by the devs as quite literally a Resident Evil in space.

Not sure why you’d make such a lengthy and firm point about the Survival Horror label, just because it doesn’t line up with your own personal and seemingly very stringent definition (even calling others ‘verifiably false’).
Survival Horror is defined as a sub-genre of action and horror where the gameplay is designed to add to the tension through resource management and limitations to movement/combat capabilities. Puzzles can also be used to progress to new areas. That’s it. Dead Space has all of this, just because it isn’t hardcore with it or a direct clone of the original RE doesn’t make it ‘false’ to call it Survival Horror.

  • @3DWithLairdWT

I love your videos, despite the fact that I feel your description of "survival horror" is so specific that it is more of a sub-sub-sub genre than genre. I personally don't think linear vs non-linear is relevant to a game being survival or horror. Also, for the survival aspect of any game, I feel that management of limited resources is the key feature of being survival or not; While how you are rewarded with those limited resources is not defining of if it is survival or not, just which flavor it is.
Minutia aside, I love your reviews and have very similar taste in game (despite loathing tank controls to a point I can only play some RE games sparingly now that we have, what I feel, are better options). Keep up the good stuff!

Couple notes on your puker and tripod rants.
    1. You can kinesis the vomit glob and throw it back. It insta-kills him and most necromorphs. It's crucial in hard core.
    2. The tripod's lunge is easily avoidable by running forward and off to the side. You can also stasis it mid-air and then run.
    3. The lunge is triggered by being too far away from it. It won't trigger at close or mid range. It's a punishment for trying to, for lack of a better term, "pussy out" the fight.

For the survival horror "rant". Listen I get it man but language changes as do what defines a genre. The problem with calling dead space just a horror game is it's too broad. Calling it a 3rd person shooter with horror elements just seems like too much and implys it's more a shooter then anything. That being said all genres are losing their meaning like RPG and action adventure. I to this have no idea what they even mean anymore tbh.

The Dead Space mobile game is actually pretty strange, in the sense that it’s not a port of DS1, but actually it’s own unique game. It uses a lot of assets from DS1, but the story is entirely new.
It’s been YEARS since I played it, but it ties into DS2 and sorta elaborates on the events leading up to The Sprawl getting overrun.
I was a dumb kid when I played this game (12 or so), but I remember it being a sorta simple but full dead space game. It was pretty repetitive, but for an IOS game in 2011 is was about as much as you could ask for. It kinda sucks it’s near unplayable today.
