@@lonestarr1490if you are a guy and wearing a fedora, then yeah, unfortunately their reputation rubs onto you. “M’lady” and shit. As a woman in the midwest, hats are unfuckingavoidable, especially giant brim hats on women, but fedoras have been ruined by the internet for everyone.
Our community theatre did Mary Poppins as the summer musical last year…y’all our costumer is a genius. A miracle worker. This dress was stunning. And VERY historically accurate. And it had to be quick-change friendly!
I think maybe there’s another version (possibly with Emily blunt) that maybe modernizes it more. Because yes, I think this is pretty much the Julie Andrews look
the point of Mary Poppins is that she is not like everyone else. She is different from the normal society... that's why she wears funny hats with blossoms and cherrys on it, bow ties and other stuff.... and yes she also wears dresses like that sometimes but in the end if she looks different from looks in 1910 it is pure intention und reflects her personality
her outfit in the film was disney trying to make it more ‘modern’, which meant that she would have a more 1950s inspired look than what would be more accurate to the 1910s, which is when the story is set. it’s not exactly the same, and you can see her full-length video about the dress if you want to know what specific differences there are
I actually really liked her dress in Mary Poppins. This is still pretty too! And probably better suited for everyday occasions, but I liked they way the movie dress moved. It was very floaty ^^ which added to the magical feel of everything.
I nearly forgot about this project holy crap did it come out nice. All that lace work definitely payed off, the movement in that dress is out of this world pretty.
The feeling of only wearing clothing you made yourself is so gratifying. She is a constant inspiration for me on my own hand sewn journey. She looks so beautiful and happy!
I cannot begin to explain how magical and wonderful this whole ensemble turned out. You are marvelous, creative, and beautiful! Thank you for sharing the processes and final results of this project. ❤ It is simply... supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!
Oh, Bernadette, lotsa lols at your leafy park frolicking! After the initial wonderment at how practically perfect Miss Poppins was in every way, I can't help but blench at just how white all the parts of the outfit are, red ribbon trim notwithstanding. My mind slips from wonderment to just how difficult it will be to keep all that white floofyness as floofily white as can be. After an afternoon of gardening I look like something dragged me through a bush backwards. So let's just not even think about wash day! 😂
from what i understand, dresses like these are notoriously hard to keep clean, they’re definitely more of a status symbol because of that! theyre meant for events and low effort pastimes, things that middle and upper class women would have to do during the day, not so much working women. for bernadette, i believe she made her dress to be able to be laundered as she usually does, so she just has to starch and press when it’s mostly dry
Even having watched the research and making-of videos, this short is viscerally satisfying to me because of recently getting press-ganged into helping with costumes in my old high school's production of this show and being in constant low-level pain at how how much the costume director seems to think she knows about historical dress verses how little she clearly knows about historical dress.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I always loved Mary’s ‘Jolly Holiday’ dress, and those bishop sleeves with the feathered hat just accentuate everything beautiful about the Edwardian aesthetic…
you know i adore the original dress in the movie but i can't get enough of the accurate version you made either. want both so bad but i suck at sewing.
OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS BERNADETTE SHORTS?!?!?! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Still the biggest fan of this outfit, and you did such a great job with this montage from the long video!
A hint: d-limonene is quite effective at helping to remove stains when added into the wash along with your regular detergent cleaner. It's, like, $30 for a quart and you need between 5 and 15 ml per load, so it also lasts for a long time.
what makes my brain implode is thinking about the fact that them doing a movie based in the 1910 in the 1964 is like us doing a movie based in the 1969 today like history truly colapses in on itself when u think about it so much that we know and talk and learn about actually happened so recently it’s insane
You always look so beautifully enchanting in these dresses I hope don't mind me saying so. People used to dress so nicely back in the day we really lowered the bar these days.
we don't, we can wear whatever we want! but it's more expensive (or you need to sew for yourself which isn't that easy - at least for me!) I'm wearing long skirts on daily basis coz i feel like it (and coz they have pockets!) or dresses and i really like it! other ppl like how i look too. just need to figure out how to introduce hats to my daily routine - my main transport is bicycle so i wear a helmet and it feels kinda weird to have to bring a hat with myself only to wear it for 15 minutes a day...
It's mostly teenagers and young adults and people with money, that feel the need to wear "what's in style." Most that I know outside of those groups wear what they want. If you like something, wear it.
Planned obsolescence, on the downside. Upside, hard fought increase in freedom and choice outside trad gender roles. (Tho in the US that is being fought by empowered bigots.)
@@sandraf6033 I got lucky one day at an op shop by finding a regency era style top. I add my era element to my outfit and that's enough to satisfy me lol. It is sad Victorian or edwardian clothes aren't easily accessible. But if you have money for it, you can commission something.
Still very disappointed people stopped wearing those hats… they’re so nice
Or hats in general. Try wearing an ordinary fedora to an ordinary city on an ordinary day. People look at you as if you were cosplaying or something.

Stunning! The fluffiness is overwhelming. . . in a good way.
Practically perfect in every way!
The lace details, the bright white, the hat, the whole outfit 😱💕😍
The dress (obviously), your hair, the song, the camera shots, the sunlight, the setting, the props 😭 it’s so beautiful!!! 😍
Thank you Bernadette Banner for creating not only another glorious ensemble but also more smile inducing short videos.
This is historically inaccurate. There are no penguin waiters nor cartoon musicians.
Anyone else agree our Queen here should play Mary Poppins with that exact dress?! 😁👍
Yes
The resounding applause might upset Our Majesty's introverted constitution... but worth the ask 😅!
Ok but the historically accurate dress feels so much more magical.
That dress looks so enchanting I wouldn’t be surprised if it imbued the wearer with Mary Poppins’ magical powers as well! ✨
