Sister Sledge ~ He's The Greatest Dancer 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

- The Chic boys were given the green light to produce any Atlantic group they wanted. At the time the biggest stars were The Rolling Stones, Yes and Bette Midler but they went with a group that was not that well known, Sister Sledge. The sisters were signed to Atlantic in 1973, but were unable to find a producer who was able to put them on the map until 1975 when they released "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me" that peaked at #92 on the Hot 100.
The LPs "We Are Family" and Chic's own "C'est Chic" were recorded at the same time. Did you know that "I Want Your Love" was written for Sister Sledge and "Greatest Dancer" was scheduled to be a Chic song? At the time the men had not yet written "Le Freak" nor "Greatest Dancer", but they did have a groove for the latter that they decided to give to the sisters. Unfinished as it was, the song was fully realized in the studio in an unusual way. Kathy Sledge says she learned her vocals BEFORE the music track was completed, with Nile feeding her the lyrics line by line while she made up her own melody. Then the boys finished the fully realized version complete with the Chic strings and released it February 10, 1979 and the sisters got their first #1 R&B hit with it and the song peaked at #9 on the Hot100.
There was some controversy in the studio with the line "My créme de la créme please take me home" and the song almost did not make the record. The sisters were worried that it would make them look like loose women and were adamant in singing "please don't go home" instead, which is what they sing when they do it live. Rodgers recalls that they were furious and he felt "That's lame, what do you mean 'Please don't go home'? He ain't going to go home because he's the greatest dancer and it doesn't make any sense. Why would he go home? Guys you are making the song about you, It ain't about you, it's about him. 'Please don't go home' what are you talking about, you just nullified the whole meaning of the song, this guy wears the finest clothes, he's the greatest dancer, he's gonna stay there longer than you!
The song tells a story about him, not you, he is the subject of the song. The girls kept saying 'My mother is going to think we are all whores'. My songs are important, lyrics, everything. There is not one word that is not very, very important to me. It has to be a complete story, a beginning, a middle and and end. If the logic is all of a sudden thrown away, I can't appreciate that". Nile prevailed and the song was recorded with the lyrics he wrote. To this day the girls still sing, "please don't go home". I never thought the lyrics made the girls look cheap, I knew they were telling a story.
Niles Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards were genius!!
Yes sir ..rip Bernard Edwards

Naturally the current generation laughs when you mention "disco" but when this comes on they always get up and dance. Why? Because they know it"s good.
I don’t think they do lol everyone i know in gen z likes disco
Yeah we don't laugh lol. We love disco@@pimas11
Because the feet must Move when the Funk hits em 😁

Nobody “laughs” at disco, you sound like a boomer just trying to complain about the younger generation over nothing.
Damn. Every time I hear this music, I just hope it never ends. This is insane. And it's genius.
This is a stunning remix long version of an amazing hit track from the incredible sister sledge one of my favourite artists !!! I've never heard this remix before 10 minutes long this is just ideal for a Saturday night floor filler let's just dance !!! This is one of my favourite all time songs from just a super sexy all sister group from San Francisco USA discovered by chic guru Nile Rodgers Bernard Edwards the banging guitar keyboards is chic all over this mega hit which was just crazy on its release in 1978 I remember this in the charts in the UK been played all the time and since then I've been a massive fan and it's just very sad now that Joni has passed away when I first heard this tragic news I could not take it in you always think your heroes will be here always but now I think of all the good times they brought to the world of music they were definitely a ground breaking group disco dance funk soul pop r+b new romantic all their music was just happy hit after hit they were very popular here in the UK massive they were always on top of the pops talk shows at this time they were just brilliant you never heard of bad things from them they are in my opinion Queen of disco Nile Rodgers said they were total professionals in their work when he discovered them !!! Again people should applaud them for their contribution to the music industry !!!
Kathy is still with us, Joni Sledge, born September 13, 1956, died of natural causes at her home in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, March 10, 2017, I wish I had a teardrop I could put here for her.
Yes I'm sorry I made a mistake I have amended my mistake !!!

The mid to late 70s had all the baaad disco sounds and clubs. I am glad I didn't miss it. 17-20 yo and dancing every night!
Right. There was a certain class and ambience to disco back then. Women dressed in beautiful outfits. Men in suits and real shoes. Even the clubs themselves were spectacular. Not all, but most. Ornate furniture, classic paintings on walls, and even the owners would mingle with patrons asking them if they were enjoying themselves. All those little touches made a difference.
One of the greatest opening guitar riffs of all time
This.
You cannot play this loud enough. Amazing job.

Yep!!!!!
That guitar lick is so memorable! From Greatest Dancer to Gettin Jiggy with it!
Bee Gees, KC Sunshine Band, Kool and Gang, Gap band..they were reeeaaall good..But Niles and Bernard had the rift that was clearly THEIR sound and no ones butt could stay in the seat!!! I never tire of them on repeat when i want to dance!! Chic and Sister Sledge Blowing up again decades later...Not a fader
Those sultry voices along with the Masters of Chic were the bomb ‼️🥂🥂🥂

One of the best disco tracks ever made ❤️
Agreed 😎👍
Sealed in Time.
Those were the days, good ol' disco hits, a good whiskey, a doobie, and a lovely lady to dance the night away.
Man, it was the best of times for a lot of the dance clubs. All the girls wanted to go dancing and us guys were happy to oblige.
In my whiskey days. Decades ago. The other, that never changed lol

RIP JONI! Now she's crusing in heaven! Truly an Angel!
Man, I love my 80s music, but I can say without any doubt that the music in the years '77 thru '79 was phenomenal. '78 especially. You would have had to have been alive and young then to understand. It was like Rock and Soul hit their mid-twenties and came into their own. What a time.
The 80s. _Lived 'em. Loved 'em. Miss 'em._
OMG 😲You just hit a homrun with those comments 4SURE!!! What I would give to go back in time for a little while🥰.I grew up on this magical sound so grateful to have lived through this era of beautiful music this kind of music will never go out of style 💜. MEMORIES WOW GOOD ODE DAYS 👏
Still listening how about October 03 2021
1979 was my fav. Year 🤩
So true
You couldn't find a tune in those 3 years that didn't tickle your fancy.
I was in my early twenties in the late1970's and I remember most of the music was absolutely hynotizing when you listened to the tunes on the radio. I was not one to go out to clubs, but by 1979 that all changed as I could resist "the music" no longer. Yes I was a late bloomer, but from then until the early to mid 80's I will treasure all of my life. Such wonderful memories a lifetime ago.
Another Timeless Classic!
Life is just better with music like this 🕺
Yes so true! 😃🎶🔊💥💫
Absolutely 😊
This song defines my days in the disco clubs, Leviticus and Mahogany, back in the 70s. My all-time favorite. Those were happy, carefree days.

Lyrics:
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
One night in a disco on the outskirts of Frisco
I was cruisin' with my favorite gang
The place was so borin' filled with out-of-towners tourin'
I knew that it wasn't my thing
I really wasn't carin', but I felt my eyes starin'
At a guy who stuck out in the crowd
He had the kind of body that would shame Adonis
And a face that would make any man proud
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen (Ooh)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
The champion of dance, his moves would put you in a trance
And he never leaves the disco alone
Arrogance but not conceit, as a man he's complete
My creme d' la creme, please take me home
He wears the finest clothes, the best designers heaven knows
Ooh, from his head down to his toes
Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci
He looks like a still, that man is dressed to kill
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen (I've ever seen)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow (Ooh, ooh, ooh, wow)
Oh, what, wow (Hey)
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen (I love your moves)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow (That I've ever seen)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen (I've ever seen)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow (Ooh, ooh, ooh, wow)
Oh, what, wow (Hey)
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow
That I've ever seen (I love your moves)
Oh, what, wow
He's the greatest dancer
Oh, what, wow (That I've ever seen)
Oh... what... wow! That I've ever seen...
I love your moves...
OH WHAT. I had no idea of the DEPTH OF THIS SONG. WOW
Thanks. I thought that the line "Oh... what... wow" was "I went wild". I guess my hearing is gone.
Nile Rodgers, one of the greatest g players ever. Great rhythm guitar!
I wonder if they had looping technology back then. Those Nile Rodgers riffs are flawless.
They were great musicians. No need to loop.
Can you imagine? I call Nile: MIDAS. Because all he touches turns to Gold. I'm heading to the Live Show at the Budokan, Japan.
No looping mate. Seen Nile LIVE.
The man honed his skills from years of being a session man
Yeah. It was called a loop of audio tape. That's literally where the term originated. You must be one of the people who can't operate a rotary telephone dial.
LMFAO
@@tednorton5150 it was a rhetorical question. What is interesting is that people are finding this worthy of discussion 40 years later.
Great music I love song
Long versions are always 🔥
This was their first hit. And still my favorite.
Sorry to be a pedant, but it wasn't their first hit in the UK at least - that honour fell to We Are Family. But this is their finest

La mejor música de todos los tiempos👍♥️♥️♥️🤗🇲🇽
I love this electric bass played like a lead guitar..shades of the great Benny Benjamin of Motown. This song was hot when I was actually in "a disco on the outside of 'Frisco"..in 1979... "He looks like a still (photo)...that man is dressed ta kill"..oh, yeah!
Hi Beth,
Sometimes I would like to have the possibility to travel back in time...to be in the disco-age.
But honestly I was in that age against disco....
My taste has changed.
Why I like disco more than in that age? Because I heard a lot of bad house music.
But now I like Rodgers and Edwards more than ever. Listen also to Dimitry goes to Paris. He combined house and disco
I think u mean James Jamerson arguably the most influential bass player in pop music history!!!!
I was literally in a "disco on the outsides of Frisco"............cruising with my favorite gang.................when this song played on and on in the dark disco on that magic night.
Fabulous arrangement, this one...........and the bass guitar continues to blow my mind.
That's really cool!!!😎
@@davidrichardson9700 Sure was! Exciting days.
Which disco? I remember one night, when I was 14, I stood in on a double date. We all went to Studio West in the city and then out to StarGaze in the San Leandro. Being 14, I was like, Oh what wow!!!! The lights, the music, the people!! Ca. 1982
I was visiting my friend Toni. I think she either lived in Milbrae or some other suburb then. I am from New York State. We went to the disco with her fellow employee from United Airlines and a couple who owned a boutique in San Fran. The music was loud and I know we were near the water..that's about all I can remember!

8:00 wait a few seconds the bass comes in .. Incredible. Without this instrument the funk would not exist
Unfortunately, I have to listen to this on my laptop-speaksers; but I can still kinda hear it, which I think is always a good thing, as the bass player seems to take advantage of the full tonal range of the instrument.

I could listen to that electric bassline all day long. Born long after this came out, but boy do I love and cherish this music. Thank god we had the 70's.
From the mid 1960's until the mid 1980's was the very best time for music...Well, that is my opinion anyway. And I am glad to see someone from a bit younger generation expanding their minds in the way of music. It soothes the soul my friend. Keep listening and stay safe!
Anytime I hear a 'Sister Sledge' song or mix, I'm always thinking of their sis Joni Sledge (RIP)..I knew her personally and she was a great woman, humble and spiritual. (Also, her son Thaddeus' currently touring with them and sings his mother's parts to perfection plus he's a great man.)
How does he sing his mom's parts? No offense intended, Thaddeus being a guy, does he put his own spin on her position in the group vocalizing with the others?
blup1s x Some men can sing in the female range - they’re called tenors. I’m sure that Joni’s parts were within the tenor range for him to hit the notes. Don’t count him out so easily, ha.
