Just a Japanese human here. If I remember correctly, ANA's lack of air conditioning you mentioned at around 14:38 should work when you rotate the overhead lights; the air flows out of the gap created around the rim.
I'm a Southern Californian about a third of the way through a 3 and 1/2 year residence in Japan. I should mention that there are differences between domestic and international service with respect to JAL and ANA. Aside from meal service, the lounges serving most Japanese Airports are very different when comparing one in the domestic area versus international terminals/zones. ANA and JAL international lounges usually have enhanced food and beverage offerings, and showers (there are a few exceptions when it comes to showers). When flying from Haneda Tokyo Airport to/from Sapporo Chitose or Osaka Itami, both JAL and ANA normally use wide-body aircraft frequently because of the volume of business. And the airport kiosks for JAL and ANA usually have a foreign language option (especially English), just like many ticket kiosks for trains/subways, bank ATM's, etc., in major cities. Also, a final hint - if your middle name is on the airline reservation, you normally need to enter the first and last name contiguously (without a space) on the airline website or airport kiosk (and there will not be a line for a middle name entry). The Japanese do not use middle names, so using a "separate" middle name online or at a check-in kiosk is confusing. By the way, I definitely prefer to use Japanese carriers when returning home to the US, or flying anywhere else to/from Japan. Their efficient and quick boarding process has always amazed me.
I want to say thank you, bro. As Japanese, I am glad you introduce Japanese great airlines!! There are much airlines in Japan so I would like you to experience.
ANA became a Skytrax 5 star airline a few years before JAL did. For 2 carriers from the same country to be part of that club is incredible because there are only 10 airlines in that ranking.

Agree. JAL's service is amazing even though it is part of OneWorld. SQ, being part of StarAlliance simply can't match the efficiency and assurance shown by JAL crew.
If you want to fly to many places, ANA is better, because they have a little bit larger network than that of JAL, and it is a member of Star Alliance. If you want to experience better flight experience including OMOTENASHI, JAL is better than ANA. As a Japanese, I am happy to hear that you enjoyed both flights in Japan! I didn’t know that not every airports in the world have observation deck, because almost all airports in Japan have that.
I flew Japan ,ANA . LAX to NRT . Both were better than any other airine. I was dissapointed Singapore airline premium class 8months ago . I am flying Japan business class next month Hope everything goes well .
Wonderful and informative video Eric! On ANA, you were on the domestic version of the Boeing 787, these 787's are only flown in Japan. You should indeed try their special Tokyo-Narita to Honolulu route on their beautiful Airbus A380.
I just flew the ANA A380s from HNL to NRT and back, and those were the best flights of my life! I booked premium economy, so I had lounge access. I'm only flying to Japan aboard those aircraft from here on out!
Thank you for making these videos! I am Japanese and fly mainly ANA all the time. This time on ANA, the reason why the Wi-Fi didn't work is probably because I didn't connect to the Wi-Fi in the ANA app - unlike JAL, on ANA you have to connect to the Wi-Fi from within the app. However, there is a slight problem with this, with the drawback that you can't even connect to the app while connected to the VPN. So if you connect from the app with the VPN etc. switched off, you should be fine. As long as you can connect, you can communicate rather comfortably!
Great video! I recommend you to review both of theese airlines on long-haul flights, because you get a full meal service there, which is the main reason of high rating.
This might sound strange... but the deepest, soundest sleep I ever had in my entire life was in my Premium Economy seat flying from Tokyo to Vancouver with ANA. I passed out in my seat with my pillow, blanket, eyeblind and earplugs immediately after dinner was served, and woke up 15 minutes from touchdown. I have never felt that great after waking up before or since.
A solid take. For longer international flights, ANA has densified many of its aircraft (so nine seats across on the 787s for example) while JAL has not (so eight seats across). More comfort matched with peerless down-to-earth service--I love JAL!
The Ana plane was actually for short routes. Japanese airlines use large planes on domestic routes and board so fast to compete with trains. JAL also uses large planes, such as the larger a350 900 on its short haul routes. Both airlines also have higher comfort configurations for long haul flights. Actually, Boeing’s recommended 787 layout is a 2-4-2, but most airlines use 3-3-3. But with Japanese airlines, both ANA and JAL, they use 3-3-3 on short haul flights, but 2-4-2 on long haul flights.
If you do get a chance, you should try flying on a major JAL route to a city like Osaka or Sapporo to/from Haneda where they use the A350 or the 787s. They also got the IFE and wi-fi. That said, Japan is the only country I can name that can board a large aircraft like a 777, 787, or A350 within 20-30 minutes without issues.
Welcome to Japan, people do the right thing and everything is efficient there! (which is why I can't wait to go back myself). I've flown both JAL and ANA internationally and both airlines are fantastic. The ANA 787 you were in was in a domestic configuration. Their international economy has better seats and more legroom
Hey thanks for picking Fukuoka airport for the starting place. I have a lot of memories with Fukuoka airport and I was so happy in the first few seconds that I recognized where he was.
I consistently fly from my city to Tokyo in a ~1:30h flight and boarding is always really quick. It also helps that airlines can often board the window seats first then the middle (if there’s one) then aisle last. It’s such a simple concept, but it does speed up a lot boarding, since passengers don’t need to shuffle around as much trying to get to their seats.
I visited Japan last November. Super super impressive ! Thanks for your video, I will try to make the efforts to try Japanese airline next time. Wish there is direct flight depart from my city, unfortunately not. Would have to take the transit.
You’re absolutely right. It is customary to not talk or be on your phone in Public areas. It’s just proper etiquette. And they were looking at you because you’re not supposed to be talking loud or on your phone in some places it’s even against the law in Japan, so you shouldn’t be filming and talking at all inside a public area at the airport. You can actually be issued a citation so next time don’t be talking out loud.
I'm guessing that the reason why you had trouble getting your boarding pass with your first and last name with ANA is because in Japan your last name goes first, and your first name goes last. It might sound a little confusing, but makes total sense in Japanese culture
I used to prefer ANA over JAL because of the former’s Piece Baggage policy (2 pieces, 23 KG each for economy) while the latter used to have a Weight Policy (25 KG). I mentioned this on Skytrax and the next thing I knew JAL switched to the exact same policy as ANA. Now I love them both equally and the only determining factor is the timing of the flights 😆😆😆
I've flown international on both JAL and ANA a few times now, and they're both awesome. Some of the nicest staff (only ones close are British Airways), decent legroom, and comfy seats. If you get lucky, JAL has some planes with 2-3-2 seating, so you can get a nice 2 person side row.
As someone who works in the transport industry (railways, not aircraft) - it cannot be understated how important passengers understanding how best to board and following advice or rules is in keeping things on time. On my routes, at rush hour? I see frequent delays of a minute or two per stop . . . That often adds up to 10 minute delays arriving into the city centre stations because passengers can't seem to grasp simple ideas like letting other people off the train before you get on or spreading themselves out along the platform so they are using all the available doors for entry. Japan is known for it's efficiency and reliability, but so much of that is tied to how the Japanese travelling public appreciate the part they play in helping to keep everything on schedule.
Having flown both JAL and ANA from LAX to Tokyo, hands down JAL is better. More space in economy, better & larger selection for movies/TV shows, food was better (they gave us bloody yoshinoya on my flight, so good), and service was better. Also ANA is the only airline I've taken where I was lucky enough to get the whole row to myself, when this has happened in the past I lay down across the seats and take a nap with no issues, on my ANA flight I was woken up and told I couldn't do that, which knocked down ANA some points for me.
I was always thrilled by the plush and refined service of Japanese carriers whenever I flew with them. JAL foods are amazingly tender, tangy and well-presented.
recently flew with JAL with 787-9 dreamliner from boeing. Now wich seats you get depends on the plane. this plane had different seats but JAL 787-9 have 1 Seat split less so you got more space. The 789 has entertainment systems but they tend to lag due to overheating i think so its not working at all times. furthermore the leg space is less in economy. At the seats there was a pillow and a blanket to use and before the start we were shown a movie for safety. The windows on the plane are really big and you can create any type of light environment as crew. you yourself can tint the window yourself. The staff was really friendly. they brought us drinks and snacks. the boarding was about 25 minutes before departure for 5 groups of passengers. and on the flight to japan the flight was a little delayed but since the pilots can flex speeds we arrived on time. we did the check in online and recieved our boarding pass about 24 hours before the flight. everything went smoothly. i can only recommend this airline
You didn’t fly on that pink airplane! You flew on an Embraer 190 but the pink airplane is a Boeing 737…and you need the ANA app to activate the Wi-Fi 😂
I think wifi in ANA flight is paid service, I had app installed and wifi connected, but still no internet, I can only browse my flight details & inflight magazine ebook thru app, but can't google nor check the inflight menu available for the flight
I tried both 787-8 Seat config JAL:2-4-2 ANA:3-3-3 Drinks JAL: Coca Cola’s ANA: Itoen’s Attendant JAL: has foreigner ANA:mostly Japanese And most different is the airport experience(NRT) JAL:T1. mixed with other airlines gates just like everywhere else. ANA:T2. I would say the gates monopoly by them. And they even have staff holding a plate, asking one by one which flight you fly. Also their boarding arrangement is better.
I recall flying on a Northwest Airlines DC-10 out of Amsterdam back in the early 90s we started boarding 1hr 10mins before departure and people still weren't seated for pushback! being able to load a 787 in 15mins is just insane! I will be flying Osaka to LHR with Japan Airlines in a couple of months and I'm really excited to see how that goes after watching this.
Hi, for ANA's domestic in-flight wifi, you have to have the app downloaded! Then you can access everything on the app!!! And it is actually not bad (was able to watch youtube at medium quality)

Never flown on JAL but have flown on their budget subsidiary Zipair and was impressed by the same cleanliness and especially timeliness. Flying ANA for the first time in a few months and can’t wait.
I have had great experiences with both JAL and ANA. I have only flown ANA once, from Narita to Chiangi. I’ve flown JAL several times, mainly because they have flights out of my home airport, DFW.
3:23 he was not on this “cool looking” plane. He was on registration JA254J which is an E190 in the house livery with Japan Airlines in text shortened to “J Air”. This also explains why the boarding time was so short and that the seats were in a 2-2 configuration
JAL's A350-900 is also equipped with full-fledged in-flight entertainment. This aircraft is mainly used on flights between Tokyo and Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa.
I enjoyed your video! Short and simple. Just wanted to point out the photo of JAL you kept flashing with the pink fish in your video was a Boeing 737 but you boarded an E190 which kinda confused me.

Eric, you filmed a B737 for JAL, but you actually flew on a E190
You didn’t fly on that pink airplane! You flew on an Embraer 190 but the pink airplane is a Boeing 737…and you need the ANA app to activate the Wi-Fi 😂
I think wifi in ANA flight is paid service, I had app installed and wifi connected, but still no internet, I can only browse my flight details & inflight magazine ebook thru app, but can't google nor check the inflight menu available for the flight
True true

He's admittedly not an "av geek."
im gonna go to osaka. really helpful. you never dissapoint eric!
Everyone thank Eric for uploading 2 videos on the weekend
Just subbed and this video is perfect for me! thank you!
I tried both 787-8
Seat config
JAL:2-4-2
ANA:3-3-3
Drinks
JAL: Coca Cola’s
ANA: Itoen’s
Attendant
JAL: has foreigner
ANA:mostly Japanese
And most different is the airport experience(NRT)
JAL:T1. mixed with other airlines gates just like everywhere else.
ANA:T2. I would say the gates monopoly by them. And they even have staff holding a plate, asking one by one which flight you fly. Also their boarding arrangement is better.
日本の航空会社に興味を持ってくれてありがとうございます! Thank you for your interesing to Japan's Airline conpanies!
僕もうれしいです❤
at this point Eric should have his own airlines with everything he likes. it would be perfect he knows so much
I recall flying on a Northwest Airlines DC-10 out of Amsterdam back in the early 90s we started boarding 1hr 10mins before departure and people still weren't seated for pushback! being able to load a 787 in 15mins is just insane! I will be flying Osaka to LHR with Japan Airlines in a couple of months and I'm really excited to see how that goes after watching this.
Try air koryo
😂😂😂😂
💀💀
💀
They are the best
Yooooo 😂
Thank you for posting a video about airlines from my home country!
日本人か
JALとANA、どっちも快適だよ
Hi, for ANA's domestic in-flight wifi, you have to have the app downloaded! Then you can access everything on the app!!! And it is actually not bad (was able to watch youtube at medium quality)
ANA 787s are configured for domestic flights. Japan Airlines and ANA have a set of widebody planes just for domestic fleets
Did I hear you correctly when you said you're NOT an av geek?? Ummm, I beg to differ 😅😅😅. There is no shame in being an av geek! I've been a flight attendant for over 20 years and I'm a proud av geek. If you weren't an av geek you wouldn't be exploring different airlines. You're a huge av geek 😂😂😂
See I like flying but I don't know all the little details so I don't know if i can consider myself one!
@ericstruk just line me, you're definitely an aviation geek! You don't have to know the mechanics or 100% of the aircraft details. You just have to be eager to learn and be excited to share your knowledge. I love your content, bro!!! It reminds me of my flying days! I had to retire in 2022 due to terminal cancer. Flying is in my blood!!!! Your content reminds me to keep fighting this cancer so that one day I will have my wings back.
Under 24 hours gang👇
Korean VS Air Koryo
I've only been on ANA's domestic flights, so it was interesting to know the overseas perspective. From Japan
I think almost all airports in Japan have observation decks. And I like that too👍
Taking JA for the first time soon and I am happy that I chose it for my long flight from Tokyo to Vancouver 😊
Now, Japan airlines has the best premium economy, and I want you to do the premium economy
Just flew JAL Premium Economy round trip HNL-HND this year and it was incredible
totally agree on the idea of having an observation deck for all airports... it's esp great if it has an outdoor potty area for pets!
3:23 he was not on this “cool looking” plane. He was on registration JA254J which is an E190 in the house livery with Japan Airlines in text shortened to “J Air”. This also explains why the boarding time was so short and that the seats were in a 2-2 configuration
ANAは地方の空港にもしっかり就航してるから過疎地のインフラとしての貢献が大きいと思う
JAL's A350-900 is also equipped with full-fledged in-flight entertainment. This aircraft is mainly used on flights between Tokyo and Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa.
I enjoyed your video! Short and simple. Just wanted to point out the photo of JAL you kept flashing with the pink fish in your video was a Boeing 737 but you boarded an E190 which kinda confused me.
Comparing 2 of the best airlines in the world on the same video is crazy 😭😭😭
wait until I do a mega video of the top 10
7:40 he says "glass of this red juice" but points his camera to a paper cup😂🤣🤣😂
Another nice video ❤I hope you enjoy your stay in Japan 🇯🇵🥢✈️
8:46 there’s a closet inside the toilet by the way😊❤
and also I’m new here because I am a new subscriber!😊
The first flight was J-AIR, a subsidiary of JAL, and they are definitely one of the bests as you show in the video. Thank you for your reviews:))
Dude, I've seen them load a 777 in 15 minutes and be backing off the gate. The bow from the ground crew always impresses me.
Good afternoon from Papua New Guinea. I enjoyed watching your contents. Thanks for sharing.
Can’t wait for more insight into airlines!
(P.S.: I would like an AirAsia vid)
will have to do it!
