With Golden Week just remember if you are in Tokyo only then it can actually be a good time to visit. Because everyone leaves Tokyo. The only down side is that smaller businesses are closed. The hotels are usually cheaper in Golden Week in Tokyo business districts. Just avoid the week after Golden week as stated here as everyone comes back!!!
I'm in Tokyo right now and i love it here I've been to all the big tourist spots but what i love the most is getting lost in the back streets of Tokyo. I've never been to a city that is so vibrant and full of light
I love traveling to Japan in the winter because I don’t mind the snow. For some reason most tourists hate colder weather so this is a bonus. I can even get away with booking hotel rooms the night before visiting another prefecture in the winter.
My favorite time to visit Japan is October to November time frame. The weather is cool and clear, trees are changing color and not so many foreign tourists. Also, I like end of July to August because of Bon Odori and Awa Dori season. O-Bon season Tokyo is not busy because most people take time off. December to January is great if a person has friends and family in Japan. For skiing and Snowboarding: First two weeks in February is fantastic time due to high snow levels, Ice & Snow festivals, and Onsen after skiing. Hokkaido has some of the best powder snow in the world, and in my opinion, Sapporo has the best Ramen in the world (Sushi as well).
I have been visiting Japan every year for past 10 years. Very good tips in this video. Highly recommended all who want to visit Japan to watch the whole video. Personally, I went for 3 weeks during August of last year. I knew it would be hot, but I live in Southern California, so I'm used to very hot dry weather. The weather wasnt as hot, but the humidity was high. All in all, it didn't affect my trip at all. My birthday month is August, and I really wanted to attend the Nagaoka Hanabi Festival. Also, the only surrounding holiday is Obon, and there are festivities related to it that are tourist friendly. If you're not heat averse and enjoy festivals, I personally would recommend going in August as its no longer rainy season, tourism is low, and festivities are high.
Thank you for sharing your real experience. It's very helpful for other tourists. I went to the Nagaoka Hanabi Festival 4 years ago. It's so amazing! I hope you come back to Japan soon.
Visited Japan in different months : May / June / September / October / Jan-Feb. My favorites were May and September. June was very damp and rainy some days. But in general I enjoy Japan in all the seasons :)
Wow! So many times! I'm glad to hear that. And thank you for sharing your real experience. It's very helpful for other tourists. I hope you come back to Japan soon!
I find late October the perfect time for me. It’s not too hot. The leaves 🍁 start to change and there is hot beverages in the vending machines. Evenings are lovely and hiking is perfect. Can’t wait to go back again (and again and again)
I came last year during June and I absolutely loved it. The temperature was just perfect and the rain didn't bother me at all. I live in the Southwest of the US which is a dry desert climate with little to no rain, so the rainy season in Japan was very nice for me!
I cant agree with the 4th point, I just came back from a late august - early 3 week trip in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) ofc it was hot, but nothing too crazy. Tokyo was more humid, while Osaka and Kyoto were hotter and made me sweat more. But as I said if ur only options to visit Japan is July/August/September, just go for it. I love the summer time and it was amazing in Japan. And if u love the summer like me, you will enjoy it too.
I traveled serval time in Japan in January from the second week of the month after the end of the year and New Year 's holiday and it is for me the perfect time. Less tourist everywhere . Now if you don't like cold temperature don't go , but if you go you will not regret it.
I’ve been living in the north eastern U.S for over 50 years and I’ve gone back to Japan every now and then. I definitely avoid the summer especially after the rainy season is over. With excruciating heat and humidity, I suffered from a heat stroke in one of my visits. I was born and grew up in Tokyo until 1970, so you may think I was well aware of the summer heat. However, after residing in a colder climate for most of my life and especially with the global warming, the heat was incredible! For me, the best time to visit Japan is late October and early November.
I plan to go after golden week next year after I graduate college as a reward to myself. I've been watching videos about the country for like 10 years so I would like to actually visit.
I am traveling Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka via Shinkansen right now during Golden Week and it is absolutely no problem. It is actually fun and shopping comes with huge discounts.
I think you're absolutely correct. We made of first visit to your beautiful and wonderous country the first two weeks of August 2024 and it was hell hot, humid and we were shoulder to shoulder with tourist, both foreign and domestic. We loved the visit and very much want to return but we'll be using your advice on when to visit next time. We also narrowly avoided two 5.3 earthquakes in areas we were only just at the day before, as well as the tropical storm that blew into Tokyo the day after we flew out of Osaka, canceling over 500 flights and causing many delays on the railways.
Thank you for sharing your real experience. It's very helpful for other tourists. I'm glad you had a good time in Japan. I hope you come back to Japan soon!!!!
We came in late March-early April 2024. The top 3 most unpleasant times we dealt with crowds were Tokyo Skytree on a fine day in late March, Tokyo Disneyland on a rainy day in late March, and Nishiki market in early April. The crowds were not pleasant at all on these.
I experienced many summers in Hawaii and booked a trip to Japan in 2023 July and thought "how bad could it be? Hawaii is closer to the equator and I survived many summers here." When I stepped out of the taxi in Tokyo, my glasses fogged up and I thought " Oh god..."
There are some good tips in this video. I always avoid Golden Week and August when visiting Japan. Despite taking precautions I got mild heat stroke during my last trip. Make sure you use a heat reflecting umbrella to prevent heat stroke.
Thank you for your advices. For our 3rd trip to Japan, will be present in august, but we choose little cities and a trip to Hakkaido, to avoid hot summer. Our best trip to Japan was last october, we went to Nagano and Hiroshima, it was our best journey ever ❤!
YES I agree, I read s many blogs that end September would be comfortable from 23 to 25 degrees but when I went it was 30 degree and I was perspiring everyday
I live in Sweden, but I lived in Kyoto for 6 months in 2020. The rainy season IS rainy, but it doesn't rain every day. It's quite warm so it feels refreshing when it does rain, although I'm not too keen on the smell of wet asphalt. (I have a VERY sensitive nose). Japanese people will say that the japanese summer is very, very hot. However I just thought it was nice. I think this is at least in part due to japanese people being very well dressed. Dressing like a tourist (tshirt and shorts) will instantly make it feel much nicer. If you do want to blen in a bit more, you might want to go to a japanese clothing store and buy a short sleeve shirt. Also remember that japanese people have a different biology, they have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of european descent. Apocrine glands produce a thicker, odoriferous sweat, while eccrine glands produce a more watery sweat, which means it will be rubbed off much easier. However, you are likely to feel the high humidity, which will stick to your skin and cool you off as you walk. I really only sweated if I was carrying something heavy or walked very fast. You want to expose as much of your body as possible to the humidity and you will stay cool and refreshed. Another thing is drinking to stay hydrated. Try to taste as many of the new drinks in the vending machines as possible. Also, try to eat tonkatsu or chickenkatsu as it contains a lot of very good things your body needs to adjust to the heat. Do that, and every day except the most extreme will just feel like nice summer days and not at all too hot. On the hottest days you do want to try to walk in the shade as much as possible though. I agree with golden week, but one thing I think is missing is picking a good spot for your hotel/ryokan. If you stay near horikawa gojo in Kyoto for example then you are within walking distance of the station, the shopping streets, many of the best tourist spots in Kyoto, the bar scene and Gion. By walking instead of taking a bike you get to see so much more. Japanese people are used to seeing all the things that overwhelm westerners. Trust me, you will need some extra time to take it all in, and walking is ideal for that. I would say from sakura season to mid september, but avoiding golden week is all good.
Thanks Thosi! Wild to see how much your English speaking has grown in 6 months! Keep up the good work, and maybe see you in Japan at the end of the year. Love from Australia
Thank you very much 👍. I visited beautiful Okinawa by tour in February 2020 from 15 to 22 , just 3 weeks before lockdown. Okinawa is beautiful and food was authentic Japanese food for lunch and dinner with buffet breakfast in my 4 to 5 star hotels , the local Japanese tour agency used by my country agent is truly awesome. I have been to most parts of Japan , I will revisit Japan again. I usually pick the autumn season.
I went last year in August. Whenever we came back to the hotel, it was like i had walked through a river in just my socks. Even after knowing it was going to be hot, I wasn't prepared for it to be THAT hot.
Hello Toshi , we are from Australia, thank you for this information , my family and i have been visiting your beautiful country many times and it has never disapointed us, we got the big 3 out of the way (osaka/koyoto/hiroshima many years ago and now we try and explore more places in between , we normally have visted any where between april/may/june, this time we are going this year early septemeber .

I'm glad I stumbled upon this site. I am planning on going to Japan from October to November 2026, and this site will be useful in planning my trip. I hope you also include ideas for more senior travelers.
Definitely going to save this video for future reference. As I said before in a previous video, I went to Japan in the beginning of August and was close by when summer vacations started. What a sweltering experience! I had to drink plenty of big water bottles from connivence stores. Thankfully, it was an experience to never visit again during that time. I’m still aiming for the autumn season on November this year for a more pleasant weather experience! Thanks for the advice again, Toshi! 👍🙇
どうも,いいビデオです We were planning to come 七月二日 and stay in 東京 for our very first visit to 日本. But because of rainy season we are now thinking to postpone it to a week later, hoping that will be enough to avoid the worst of it. This also gives us a few more days to better learn the language! Kanji is hard!
I am not Japanese, living in Tokyo for more than 8 years. I recommend not paying attention to the recommendations of this guy. Come to Japan anytime of the year. Tokyo is empty during the golden week. Kyoto was perfect during corona, now it is impossible anytime. The rainy season in 2023 was almost nonexistent and similarly this year, so far (June 13, 2024) almost no rain. End of march, beginning of April is sakura blossoming, I have been coming to Japan since 2009 as a tourist at that time of the year, until I became a resident. I never realized about the end of the fiscal year or travels of school kids. That is a silly observation. But definitely, the most silly recommendation is to avoid visiting Japan during the sakura blossoming, I don't understand what is in his mind.
Maybe the problem is not that it’s more difficult to travel for foreigners during these periods, maybe the problème is that the Japanese people are afraid of being annoyed by foreigners ? 🤔 And if we can avoid Japanese people to be fed up of tourists, it’s better for everyone.
The problem is everyone comes for the sakura blossoming. So while they get to see Sakura if they are lucky, their experience of Japan is overcrowded. I have been to landmarks in japan and been the only person there. I have walked quiet streets and not had to book tickets and things and think that is the ideal time to get the “Japan experience” from movies and anime. Sakura blossoming, may as well be in a different country and that’s great for the many many people who love tourist cities, tons of people enjoy the crowds. But just be aware that is what happens if you go to Japan in April, you may as well be in Rome, New York, India etc. It’s not “Japan” so much as a tourist hub. For real experience you will come quieter time.
Thank you. I'm was actually planning on going to Japan in October or November of this year. The only thing I'm trying to decide is if I want to go to Tokyo or Kyoto for my first trip.
Very good guide! Especially the time table and crowd monitoring were totally unexpected, but will be very helpful if I manage to visit Japan some time!
I went in 2023 from Nov 29th-Dec 13th. The weather was perfect, a handful of 60° days and nice cool evenings. Perfect if you put off major heat like myself.
just came back from Japan a few days ago, from 1 week vacation in Tokyo. the weather was perfect and not so much local traffic was super nice. Few places were still bombarded with a variety of foreign tourists, ruining local/authentic experience. all and all It was great and I hope I can come back to Japan!
Just came from March 27th - Apr 16th, yea it was busy and yes tourist areas where very crowded. But there is so many other locations to explore and enjoy without having to go near a lot of those areas.
I just returned from Tokyo today, after having spent almost three weeks there, and (having visited some of the countryside and Mt. Fuji as well), September was sunny almost the entire time. Except for usually around 32C weather, which was often humid, it was still somehow wonderful. Some Japanese friends who live there were more than happy and anxious to show me around. There was barely any rain during most of September, 2024, but if I (hopefully) visit again, I would definitely come in October, before any other month! Except for the confusion of the massive Shinjuku Station at first, I even managed to get around Tokyo by myself at least four times. What an incredible place!
Thank you for sharing your real experience. It's very helpful for other tourists! I'm very happy to hear that you had a good time in Japan. I hope you come back to Japan soon!
@@Toshi-Guide-from-Japan I would highly recommend it to anyone! It was one of the highlights of my life! Being a musician, I wish I could move there as there is such a vibrant music scene! Some musician friends in Tokyo are Kanade Sato and famous drummer, Senri Kawaguchi. Here (in and around Toronto) most people seem to only listen to rap, hip-hop and very commercial 'pop'- barely anything for bands, sadly.
Heat is nothing, I live in weather that is even warmer (tropics), where we wear tshirts and shorts/jeans all the time. We have spent snowy winters there, and as people of the tropics, the right clothes do matter. We plan out trips as early as 5-6 months earlier, which means plane and hotel/bnb are still inexpensive, and those who work can earmark VL really early.
Pretty much. It’s too touristic now, or the weather is bad or there is a national holiday where things are closed and locals are at all the tourist spots. Better to go to a more developing place like South Korea.
Honestly, I visited Japan last August and I do not regret it one bit. So much so that I am returning in August again this year. Summer is amazing in Japan; less tourists (relatively) and spending time in Hokkaido in the summer is breathtaking! For context, I have hyperhidrosis and sweat excessively when it is even 15 celsius outside. I used clinical grade anti-perspirant for my trip last summer and it worked miracles! The humidity will definitely get you though... But you do get used to it and I grew to enjoy the smell of that heavy air... Weird..
Thank you for this . I have a trip this year in August and I have literally lost sleep thinking about it! I’m going with my two daughters and we all been quite put off but it was the only month we could go
Been to Japan three times. First time was in the middle of December and I was staying in Osaka and Kyoto. Apart from Arashiyama and Gion, my whole trip was very incredibly pleasant. Second time was in late April and I was in Tokyo. The sakuras had just bloomed but there were many areas around the city like Kobikicho Square, Nakano, and Kyobashi that were hardly crowded. If you want to see the cherry blossoms, you sort of have to risk it. Your experience will really depend on the mindset you have when you arrive. For me, the worst time to go is definitely Golden Week. Golden Week is HORRIBLE. Just don't go. I wish I didn't go at that time but my friend who I had not seen for 10 years was only in Japan during Golden Week. I think all other times are fine really.
I was in Japan twice - in march and may. This year i’m coming in mid november ❤ 8th point - that exactly my trip from last year (15-29.05). It was perfect - warm spring.
My future to be wife and I are going back to Japan in November, and we’re looking forward to it! It’ll be our honeymoon 🎉 We were there for one week last year in November too and it was amazing!
I visited Japan in mid-September last year and I still felt that it was too hot and humid for my Nordic body, so I don't even want to think how hot it is in August. This year I will be visiting Japan unfortunately in the middle of Golden Week due to how it was possible to get vacation from work - however, on a positive side it will be a bit easier to meet some Japanese friends as they are also on holiday. I booked train tickets right away when they were possible 3 weeks ago. And of course my trip extends to after the Golden Week so I get that "better time to visit" also. I already started planning possible next trips that will most likely be in the end of November and in the early/mid April (just before Golden Week next year)
just came back from my third trip in japan, this time i spent 6 nights (30/5 5/6) in tokyo with 2 little trip outside the city (enoshima and kawagoe). Luckily it rained heavily only 1 day so the week was pretty smooth. Very few tourist in comparison to other months also the temperature was perfect and the flight ive found was super cheap (440€). Definitively worth it
To sum up, I'd avoid Japan during the _sakura_ (cherry blossom) season, Golden Week and the summer months after the rainy season, and maybe the winter months if you're going to parts of Japan that get a huge amount of snow (especially northern Honshu and Hokkaido).
I just returned from Japan. I was there 3/17-3/31. I have family in Tokyo and Nagasaki, so my trip was more family oriented than touristy. While I enjoyed the hustle of Tokyo, it made me sad at how the Geisha and Maiko are harassed in Kyoto/Gion. I did very much love my mother's home town of Higashisonogi on Kyushu as well as Glover Gardens.
Thank you for sharing your real experience. It's very helpful for other tourists because countryside area is also good in Japan. I hope you come back to Japan soon!
Very informative. Thank you. Will visit Japan this coming 2nd week of July. This is our 4th time ni Japan. Hope the weather in Tokyo is fine by that time of our visit.😊
We have traveled early may a few times and it is perfect. Though Sapporo was still rather cold. This year we are coming in December to Jan. White Christmas in Sapporo area. Let’s hope it’s not too busy.
Funny thing is I knew this exact timing because this is same time you want to travel to Asia in general. Always Spring and Fall to avoid the insane summer heat and snow in winter XD (minus the specific holidays)
I came back from Japan 3 weeks ago. Weather was absolute HELL, 37 degrees (99 Fahrenheit) at 80 to 90 percent humidity. I‘m a really fit person, but even I had a day when I just stayed in the hotel, and only went outside when it had „cooled down“ some at night. The sun is also really intense, so it really gets to you sometimes.

Hello, I am planning to visit japan in the first week of January. Can you suggest good places to be and things to do? Is the temperature too cold?
@@miobulle1112Can I wear a kimono like a tourist when visiting to Japan? 🥺

Thank you for sharing your plan.
I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan!
The small towns are the best places to explore. They all have their unique quirks and history. Highly recommend it.
Thank you for sharing your comment.
I like rural areas too!
We spent all of last June and first two weeks of July there last year. We had a great time. It's a bit cooler and the rain wasn't too off putting.
I'm glad to hear that.
I hope you come back to Japan soon!!
I am traveling Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka via Shinkansen right now during Golden Week and it is absolutely no problem. It is actually fun and shopping comes with huge discounts.
Thank you for sharing your real experience.

Hawaii is closer to the equator and I survived many summers here."
When I stepped out of the taxi in Tokyo, my glasses fogged up and I thought " Oh god..."

@@mogtrader8 surprisingly no. I think it is because parents can only travel with their kids in the summer and winter months
Not the same, the difference between Japan and Hawaii is that Hawaii have the Trade winds which make summers and humidity bearable.
There are some good tips in this video. I always avoid Golden Week and August when visiting Japan. Despite taking precautions I got mild heat stroke during my last trip. Make sure you use a heat reflecting umbrella to prevent heat stroke.

For our 3rd trip to Japan, will be present in august, but we choose little cities and a trip to Hakkaido, to avoid hot summer.

Thanks for the information. I went to Japan in late September 2023. It was so hot and humid. The weather was odd and summer had extended

YES I agree, I read s many blogs that end September would be comfortable from 23 to 25 degrees but when I went it was 30 degree and I was perspiring everyday
Going for my 6th time in July, the best months are May and October. If you go in May make sure it's just after golden week.

京都のコインロッカーについてです。
昼頃に京都駅に到着したら、数百個あるロッカーが全て使われていました。
1時間以上駅内を歩き回って探しましたが、全く見つからずに本当に困りました。

Thank you for sharing your real experience and advice.
Those are very helpful for other foreign tourists. I hope you come back to Japan soon!
Thank you for the very good tips. I will be coming to Osaka next year 2025, 21-25 April. Hopefully it is the right time to visit 😊

We were planning to come 七月二日 and stay in 東京 for our very first visit to 日本.

And if we can avoid Japanese people to be fed up of tourists, it’s better for everyone.
The creator is correct to avoid August. If you are a senior citizen, it will be suicidal.
The creator is so RIGHT about Shinkansan during the season he recommended to avoid.
you've stayed in Japan for 8 years and yet you are questioning a guy who is obviously Japanese and stayed in Japan his whole life 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
The problem is everyone comes for the sakura blossoming.
Thank you for sharing your plan.
In my previous videos, I explained tourist spots in Tokyo and Kyoto.

I was one of those 2024 feb visitors. Best time of my life. The beauty of Japanese women is unbelievable. My life is more complete now.
I'm glad to hear that you had a good time in Japan.
As you mentioned, Japanese women are so beautiful!haha

Heat is nothing, I live in weather that is even warmer (tropics), where we wear tshirts and shorts/jeans all the time. We have spent snowy winters there, and as people of the tropics, the right clothes do matter. We plan out trips as early as 5-6 months earlier, which means plane and hotel/bnb are still inexpensive, and those who work can earmark VL really early.
Thank you for sharing your comment!!
So in other words-don’t travel to Japan since there’s really no good time.
Pretty much. It’s too touristic now, or the weather is bad or there is a national holiday where things are closed and locals are at all the tourist spots. Better to go to a more developing place like South Korea.
26 days to go! I'm feeling relief that I choose a good time to visit
I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan.
Best day to travel to Japan is February 31st.
Weird..

I usually go to Japan around September and December, to visit my family in Hokkaido.
Thank you for sharing your plan!!
thank you for the information!
Thank you for your friendly comment!

Coming from a hot country, August seems like the perfect time, especially since there are so many festivals.
Yes, August is a great time to visit if you're looking for traditional Japanese festivals.
To sum up, I'd avoid Japan during the _sakura_ (cherry blossom) season, Golden Week and the summer months after the rainy season, and maybe the winter months if you're going to parts of Japan that get a huge amount of snow (especially northern Honshu and Hokkaido).
Thank you for sharing your opinion.

Funny thing is I knew this exact timing because this is same time you want to travel to Asia in general. Always Spring and Fall to avoid the insane summer heat and snow in winter XD (minus the specific holidays)
You're accustomed to traveling!
