It’s oddly uplifting to see a man of Jerry’s generation speak so openly about emotional struggles considering he’s from an era that it was not encouraged. Not that I want to generalise in that sense with regards the openness of respective generations.

I'm constantly wishing I was dead, and I don't tell anyone I know about it. The only reason I don't end my life is because it will really hurt the few people in my life. I wish I could go up to all of them and say that I have saved them from years of sadness, stress, heartache, darkness, blaming themselves, and probably divorce by not doing it... because it's the only thing I'm proud of. I'm just worthless. Thank you Jerry for being brave enough to be real.

My high horse? That's usually something you say to someone who's judging others as if they're perfect. So why would you say that? Because I have one thing in my life I'm proud of? I'm sorry if that bothers you. I've seen what suicide does to a family before. It wouldn't be good for my dad at the very least.

its bc ppl w.o figures to look up to that dont find those proper figures or outlets typically fall into the statistic category. Those with harsh to very harsh circumstances that DO infact find the proper insight or learn to be their own will/force while learning which inspiring figures to identify with are typically the ones that grow to be the exception/exceptional. ESP in a country like america be it west or lebron or other great players. I expect nothing short of what it took them to get to that level....to be what drives them in all things/facets of life. Or what IMO makes them geniuinely more different than other great players/peers of what sport or etc that first made them famous....getting to figure out/see for our own what really made them DIFFERENT is the resepct/due justice they deserve in their lifetime. Ill be looking foreward to reading wests and considering Lincolns among the ranges i had seen/covered in school back when. Stuff like this even crosses to figures like tupac. These figures are so equitable to our future/fruits of society.

I think it's always so comforting to hear conventionally "successful" people talk about their struggles with depression. It's a reminder that I should never be jealous of anyone, and a reminder that no matter what material thing I do to "make myself happy", it's not gonna make me happy unless I shift my mindset.

Only people who truly suffer from depression can relate to what Jerry is talking about here. Depression for some people never goes away, so when you get smart-azzes that say "Just get over it, you ain't the only one that has had to deal with misfortune in life," you understand that some people just will never understand. One thing I did not hear in this interview is whether Jerry ever took ssri's and if they helped. They never did anything for me. I guess I need to research his bio.

People get uncomfortable with describing suicide as "courageous" cause no one wants to be thought of as glamourizing or encouraging it. But the truth is known by anyone who gets near that place in their mind, it takes an immense amount of courage to do it, until it doesn't.

People in North America equate success with wealth and materialism. This is the fatal flaw of our culture. People think, "If I could only get .... I'd be happy" This is a fallacy, and no external elements will every bring you real happiness. Wealth, relationships, championships etc will never bring happiness, it can only come from within.
