My narcissistic Mother passed away in September 2024 at the age of 86, after a two year illness. I could write a novel about the lifetime of narcissism I experienced. Often times it was a living hell. Holidays were always the worst because she was at her worst. God bless anyone who was raised by a narcissistic parent. Talk about hell on earth. Just glad my brothers and I came out the other side, loving and caring people. 🌹

Narcissists have one weakness. Fearless people. I have seen self centered people completely malfunction when dealing with someone who is not the least bit impressed by them and has zero fear of what they might say or do. If a narcissist can't scare you or make you knuckle under, and they realize you just don't give a shit about them, the whole facade collapses.
A middle school kid, a friend of my sons, back in the 80s, talked to me and said he wanted to move in with us because his mother wanted him to fail. I was stunned, first that he said it, and second that he was aware enough to have realized it. Smart kid, and he turned out to be right. After a few bumps in his life he squared himself away, works hard, has a normal wife and child . . . he did not turn out to be the failure his narcissistic mother was aiming for. Narcissists are some real family devouring creatures. Horrifying actually. Rather like an animal which eats it's own young. Just yuck.

Its a duty to inform yourself very good about narcissim - otherwise you will get abused by all kind of narcs - they are everywhere lately - and they do collateral damage to society.
My mother is the exact same. She is so funny and hard working, but at the same time, she made sure to make everyone around her feel so low because they weren’t like her.
@@Angelina6518 Telling the truth of one's experience is loving a thing to oneself. Spiritual Bypassing issues and emotions by saying we are "all love" etc. can damage your heath. I was an emotional bypasser (as I grew up with some abuse and lots of emotional neglect and as a survival strategy I became the "good girl" and the always "nice girl") and first got depression (started at age 10 and lasted on and off for decades) and then finally chronic pain and illness and recovered from all of those by going back to my childhood and seeing and feeling my truth.--feeling the shame, grief and anger in my body (all the stuck repressed emotions). Forgiveness comes naturally after all that healing is done--not by forcing yourself to forgive and be ok with everthing and bypassing your truth and all the repressed emotions in your body.
My mother in law is a narcissist and everyone including her sons and sisters are scared of her. She is 90 and still hold that certain power. It’s horrendous. I stay away from her.
My 85 year old mother in law is a narcissist and her 3 sons and 3 daughters in laws are afraid of her too. In my older more wiser years I stood up to her recently and she didn’t disappoint….. she yelled and screamed at me to get out of her house and that she would sue me if I didn’t leave. I’m free now! Haha. Took me a long time to not be afraid of her and stand up for myself. She couldn’t handle it because she always loved the control over making my life miserable. Not any more. I’m free !

@@soniafaye9919 yes I know…I never recognized how fortunate I was until I became an adult and my Dad asking me - a week before he passed - “was I too tough on you growing up?”. I immediately responded : “No Dad…I needed discipline and am the productive woman I am today because of your discipline”. It just rolled off my tongue without thought…because I guess I knew all along but never gave it any thought until faced with the impending loss of my Dad. I’m grateful every day for both my Mom and Dad ♥♥♥
I so appreciate Josh’s candor. Josh and I are cut from the same cloth. We grew up in the same time, same punk scene, same upbringing dynamic, growing up in the beach communities of SoCal. Both of us had narcissistic moms, and I totally get it. It’s a game-changer when the adult child of a narcissistic parent begins to understand what narcissism is, how somebody got that way, and how it impacts the people they’re closest to.

I don’t know if my mother was a narcissist. Everyone, including my dad, adored her. But secretly, she was bullying and abusing me every day while my dad was at work. So he never got that she was cruel and abusive. She was hugely popular with dozens of lifelong friends. I was her scapegoat for all of her life disappointments. She also gave me a huge amount of cultural mentoring, saw my creative gifts and encouraged them. So living with a narcissist can be confusing. Their giving with one hand/taking away with the other - makes you needy for love and self-doubting. It can push you forward but hold you back. After I turned 4, she basically threw me away emotionally. To this day I feel myself to have been a “motherless” child. And yet, though she passed away years ago, she’s still looms in my mind, my life. Because the child of a narcissist is always in the position of trying to figure out the impossible: WHY???😢

Narcissists know exactly how to manipulate everyone around them -- they use different tactics on different people. They bully some people, and with other people they play the victim in order to guilt their that person into doing whatever they want. Dad was also a victim of this narcissist.
I cut my narcissistic mother off a little under 2 years ago now. Best thing I ever did. The months immediately following that change I found very interesting. The absence of her influence sparked memories & flashbacks; unearthed reasons for some of my more “negative” qualities if you will. One of the biggest- was the fact that it was ALWAYS this way, and the reason that she was “nicer” to me as a child was because she could more easily control me- but even then, I didn’t have the freedom of choice that my friends had. She even revealed it one day after I rejected her offer to cut my hair saying: “You know when you were a child, I used to be able to do things like that and you wouldn’t say a word” This & amongst many other memories that resurfaced, still give me chills to this day. It’s all about manipulation and control. Nothing else.
Jane was the ultimate nightmare client at an animal hospital I worked at in Montecito in the late 70'. Scenes in front of her young son, Josh, and James just standing there allowing it. Horrible woman.

My dad whom died a few years ago at 86 , his family begged him not to marry my narcissistic mom. He did and it has ruined the entire immediate and extended family and everything she touches. She is 85 now and nothing has changed. She isn't happy unless everything is in ruins.

It is so damn common how many are narcissists. Thanks to the internet it is a real avalanche of information and revelations. People being exposed left and right. A huge Bright Light is being shone on the dark, dank cesspit of familial and societal narcissism. My mom was a narcissistic meanie. My dad rescued me from her. I have always been calm and giving. Let people do what they want. If they were mean or negative I gave them few chances to stay in my circle.
Go no contact to all narc relatives and people around you. Did not even go to narc moms funeral - my body system said no. Best decision to listen to my body. Body never lies to you.

I am so sorry to hear this. I grew up in Southern California. I lived in Santa Barbara twice. Once age 7 , again at age 21. Back in the 60s And 70s it was such a wonderful place. I spent a lot of time on that big old warf. I grew up with a Nass- mom too. She spent about an hour and a half - 2 hours DAILY just doing her own personal grooming. Bathing, hair, make-up, nails, wardrobe. So sad to hear about the tension in the home. Especially your dad's unhappiness. I think I was a young teen when I first had a crush on the amazingly handsome James Brolin , and his silky deep voice. I was so surprised when he married Barbara Streisand. That seemed so unlikely. I hope they are happy. Glad you survived your wild youth.😊

Being the same age as Josh, I relate to much of his story. We still call ourselves the original Goonies!! Gen X'ers to the core! Zero supervision. My mother dropped me off at the Greyhound Bus Station at 9p, out in BFE so I could go hang with my Aunt and all her stoner friends out in Austin, TX. Hippy Hollow. We had grit back then. I think that's why we love Josh. Raw and real!! 💪😎💋
His mother needed him to be this rowdy, dangerous character that she could vicariously live through. So he was trapped in her fantasy and did everything to ensure her attention. She needed him to be a certain way so she could like him... (not love him which she was incapable of)...because he then resembled a romanticized version she wanted to reflect back on her like an extension of some sorts. My mother was the same but with sports.
I was born in 1970 and my mother was a version of this. We lived a life where I was simply something to feed and put clothes on. My mother's wants and needs were the only ones in the family. She only cared about herself, and my stepdad, who was presented as my real dad because that was what was most convenient for her, only worried about trying to make her happy, which was a losing battle. There was never any effort put into me. I was never shaped and molded by good parenting. I simply grew up in a bedroom and ate food out of a microwave. It wasn't until I got away from her in adulthood but I put myself together and became successful. And when I told her that she was going to have to put effort into a relationship with me and my children, she told me that she expects us to do all the work. So basically, I cut her off. And to this day, she is a 76 year old woman who is on her fourth husband, and he still serves her kind of like a queen has subjects. I was never anybody's legacy, and I was basically a free-range kid kind of like James here. And you might call me a helicopter parent to my kids, but they are both successful students, successful athletes, and have been raised to not make the major mistakes I did. Nothing is perfect, but my focus is on my kids because I know what it's like to have a parent who's only focus is themselves

I made a promise to myself that my life would be lived in service to my children and to be lived by certain standards. I’m sorry you had to endure this. When you speak out you’re healing so many others that have never been able to even identify why they aren’t whole. They KNOW they’re not but that behavior becomes so normalized that some actually seek it out in their own adult relationships if they’re not actually perpetrating it. BUT you hear him. He loves his mom. He actually still needs his mom, maybe even in the insanity of it. He doesn’t need that part just the better residuals of what she did have of herself. Is he better off without her? I don’t know. But sometimes you miss what you don’t have anymore. You don’t miss the insanity you just wish that THAT person could have been so much more to you than they were.

This brings up so many emotions in me😢 My dad made me feel so unworthy my entire life It wasn’t until my kids saw boxes of “self help” books that they understood the pain that I had been through because I could never be who he wanted me to be. I gave up my life to care for my mom while my brother did absolutely nothing but was always the hero. When I confronted my dad his response was “ well you should take care of your mom- you’re her daughter”. No Good Deed Goes Unpunished….
We were groomed to care about the narcs crazyness - but I did recognized that - late - but still I did - and I told the narc on the phone that she can kiss my axx - that helped me a lot.
Sounds just like my life. In the end I got very ill and couldn’t take care of my narc mother anymore and it was my own daughter who confronted my brothers and said you have to take grandma! And now her hero son has her and won’t speak to me….im the bad guy. After twenty five years of caring for her he has had her a year and says I ruined his life smh.

To be honest, kids these days live the Hollywood lifestyle I can imagine child actors did from the 80s onwards. Their whole lives are documented by photos and videos put online by narcissistic parents. And these are the people we went to school with, now giving their kids ridiculous names. These kids are basically treated like Disney stars and that, and eventually they have a Miley Cyrus type identity crisis and have to find out what life is really like without the constant glamour, which is really just their overbearing parents.
I grew up in the seventies with all that “ freedom” that some people talk about. It’s bs. My siblings and I are lucky to have survived with just some broken bones and scars . We would swim in the Ohio river ! A half mile from tree rivers stadium! In the 70s you know how filthy that water was! And that’s a fast moving river with a lot of barge traffic . We were ten to 12 jumping in between the shore and the barges and one time that barge drifted back to the shore so much my brother and a friend couldn’t squeeze between ,they almost died that day. At seven I found a huge pile of hard core porno magazines in a parking lot . I had no idea what I was looking at . We use to hitch hike to the public pool six or seven kids piling in strangers cars sitting on strangers laps . CCD classes was Monday nights. I use to walk home by my self in the cold dark of winter two miles through the city. I was like nine. I did the same Wednesday nights for Girl Scouts . I was raking leaves around the neighborhood for extra money and this guy told me to come inside for a pop and I was taught to listen to adults so I went in his creepy dark house sat on his creepy sofa with no lights on cause “ it was hot and the light bulbs made it hotter” I was told and I remember how it smelled weird in there and i wanted to leave and he was giving me a bad vibe and I finally ran yelling I needed to get home for dinner left my dads rake in the yard . My older brother at 12 would jump on trains with his friends . We weren’t havin* great adventures we were being stupid kids making horrible decisions because we had no adult watching us and giving guidance. That letting your kids be “ free “ bs is just ridiculous lazy and delusional thinking. My job is to raise my children in a safe loving environment and have grand adventures with them
Omg,my life exactly with my 4 older siblings,cousins.They had a train track in the backyard,we would jump in & out between the cars.Soo dumb& then the dikes of the Alleghany River.Would tree swing naked into this rushing waters.Throw rocks at the indians on their reservation,broke windows.CCD on monday nights & Girl scouts,brownies.My mother died when i was 11,got lung cancer at 9.. I feel like i had nine lives.I never married or had kids.I broke the cycle of severe mental illness & celtic litters of kids. 😌

Yup some of us knew what we were growing up with...even if we did not have the words to describe. And when you see that they know you see then you learn to just stay away as much as possible. Cuz you will always get criticized, blame and their judgement all while they perform in front of others at your expense. For me cutting ties was the only way out. Life is better that way.

I think more accurately, Boomers get accused of being selfish, there's a difference. And that's usually just from young people who feel entitled to what the older people/their parents have/had. Pure narcissism is the new world order among the young now, and it's been an increasing trend for 40 years.
For example a Boomer can't fathom why or how someone becomes an "influencer." They'll tell you to grow up and get a real job. The influencer may actually make more money than the Boomer did, but that's incidental. It's really about the motivation. An influencer doesn't want a boss or coworkers telling them what to do, they must be the center of everything. They don't work well with others.

Sadly my ex and our second daughter are so this. My daughter is so much like him mom. I’ve tried. We have spent time, I’ve done so many therapies with her and solo to be the supportive parent, to connect with her, to understand what is happening… I kept asking people over the years from 8-18, what to do. To this day she eats people up. She has no real friends, she has a new love of her life every 6-9 months, the One, and then ruins their lives, goes from love bomber to to angry victim like the switch of a light.. it’s brutal to watch and it seems I can do nothing now … to anyone who it might matter, seek support from people other than therapists. Our education system has failed at the university level. That’s the place I might have done better. If I had better support for myself, maybe I could have seen how to be a better mom. Seen what she needed. I fully know it’s on me; as the parent. I did try. These conversations weren’t there, I could not see the places I could have been present or listened better.. or whatever. We really need healthy community, tribes, when raising kids. …

I have seen self centered people completely malfunction when dealing with someone who is not the least bit impressed by them and has zero fear of what they might say or do. If a narcissist can't scare you or make you knuckle under, and they realize you just don't give a shit about them, the whole facade collapses.

A middle school kid, a friend of my sons, back in the 80s, talked to me and said he wanted to move in with us because his mother wanted him to fail. I was stunned, first that he said it, and second that he was aware enough to have realized it. Smart kid, and he turned out to be right. After a few bumps in his life he squared himself away, works hard, has a normal wife and child . . . he did not turn out to be the failure his narcissistic mother was aiming for. Narcissists are some real family devouring creatures. Horrifying actually. Rather like an animal which eats it's own young. Just yuck.

I was an emotional bypasser (as I grew up with some abuse and lots of emotional neglect and as a survival strategy I became the "good girl" and the always "nice girl") and first got depression (started at age 10 and lasted on and off for decades) and then finally chronic pain and illness and recovered from all of those by going back to my childhood and seeing and feeling my truth.--feeling the shame, grief and anger in my body (all the stuck repressed emotions). Forgiveness comes naturally after all that healing is done--not by forcing yourself to forgive and be ok with everthing and bypassing your truth and all the repressed emotions in your body.
A narcissist will only bring drama and chaos to your life. Drama & Chaos. That’s all they have to offer.

I immediately responded : “No Dad…I needed discipline and am the productive woman I am today because of your discipline”. I don’t know if my mother was a narcissist. Everyone, including my dad, adored her. But secretly, she was bullying and abusing me every day while my dad was at work. So he never got that she was cruel and abusive. She was hugely popular with dozens of lifelong friends. I was her scapegoat for all of her life disappointments. She also gave me a huge amount of cultural mentoring, saw my creative gifts and encouraged them. So living with a narcissist can be confusing. Their giving with one hand/taking away with the other - makes you needy for love and self-doubting. It can push you forward but hold you back. After I turned 4, she basically threw me away emotionally. To this day I feel myself to have been a “motherless” child. And yet, though she passed away years ago, she’s still looms in my mind, my life. Because the child of a narcissist is always in the position of trying to figure out the impossible: WHY???😢

I cut my narcissistic mother off a little under 2 years ago now. Best thing I ever did.
The months immediately following that change I found very interesting. The absence of her influence sparked memories & flashbacks; unearthed reasons for some of my more “negative” qualities if you will. One of the biggest- was the fact that it was ALWAYS this way, and the reason that she was “nicer” to me as a child was because she could more easily control me- but even then, I didn’t have the freedom of choice that my friends had. She even revealed it one day after I rejected her offer to cut my hair saying:
“You know when you were a child, I used to be able to do things like that and you wouldn’t say a word”
This & amongst many other memories that resurfaced, still give me chills to this day. It’s all about manipulation and control. Nothing else.

My dad whom died a few years ago at 86 , his family begged him not to marry my narcissistic mom. He did and it has ruined the entire immediate and extended family and everything she touches. She is 85 now and nothing has changed. She isn't happy unless everything is in ruins.

I lived in Santa Barbara twice. Once age 7 , again at age 21.
Back in the 60s And 70s it was such a wonderful place.
I spent a lot of time on that big old warf.
I grew up with a Nass- mom too.
She spent about an hour and a half - 2 hours DAILY just doing her own personal grooming.
Bathing, hair, make-up, nails, wardrobe.
So sad to hear about the tension in the home.

His mother needed him to be this rowdy, dangerous character that she could vicariously live through. So he was trapped in her fantasy and did everything to ensure her attention. She needed him to be a certain way so she could like him... (not love him which she was incapable of)...because he then resembled a romanticized version she wanted to reflect back on her like an extension of some sorts. My mother was the same but with sports.

I was born in 1970 and my mother was a version of this. We lived a life where I was simply something to feed and put clothes on. My mother's wants and needs were the only ones in the family. She only cared about herself, and my stepdad, who was presented as my real dad because that was what was most convenient for her, only worried about trying to make her happy, which was a losing battle. There was never any effort put into me. I was never shaped and molded by good parenting. I simply grew up in a bedroom and ate food out of a microwave. It wasn't until I got away from her in adulthood but I put myself together and became successful. And when I told her that she was going to have to put effort into a relationship with me and my children, she told me that she expects us to do all the work. So basically, I cut her off. And to this day, she is a 76 year old woman who is on her fourth husband, and he still serves her kind of like a queen has subjects. I was never anybody's legacy, and I was basically a free-range kid kind of like James here. And you might call me a helicopter parent to my kids, but they are both successful students, successful athletes, and have been raised to not make the major mistakes I did. Nothing is perfect, but my focus is on my kids because I know what it's like to have a parent who's only focus is themselves

I made a promise to myself that my life would be lived in service to my children and to be lived by certain standards. The only lasting pain is the Wonder and curiosity about what I could have accomplished if I would have lived in a family that put effort and time into me rather than just existing

I gave up my life to care for my mom while my brother did absolutely nothing but was always the hero. When I confronted my dad his response was “ well you should take care of your mom- you’re her daughter”.

Sounds just like my life. In the end I got very ill and couldn’t take care of my narc mother anymore and it was my own daughter who confronted my brothers and said you have to take grandma! And now her hero son has her and won’t speak to me….im the bad guy. After twenty five years of caring for her he has had her a year and says I ruined his life smh.

To be honest, kids these days live the Hollywood lifestyle I can imagine child actors did from the 80s onwards. Their whole lives are documented by photos and videos put online by narcissistic parents. And these are the people we went to school with, now giving their kids ridiculous names. These kids are basically treated like Disney stars and that, and eventually they have a Miley Cyrus type identity crisis and have to find out what life is really like without the constant glamour, which is really just their overbearing parents.

I grew up in the seventies with all that “ freedom” that some people talk about. It’s bs. My siblings and I are lucky to have survived with just some broken bones and scars . We would swim in the Ohio river ! A half mile from tree rivers stadium! In the 70s you know how filthy that water was! And that’s a fast moving river with a lot of barge traffic . We were ten to 12 jumping in between the shore and the barges and one time that barge drifted back to the shore so much my brother and a friend couldn’t squeeze between ,they almost died that day. At seven I found a huge pile of hard core porno magazines in a parking lot . I had no idea what I was looking at . We use to hitch hike to the public pool six or seven kids piling in strangers cars sitting on strangers laps . CCD classes was Monday nights. I use to walk home by my self in the cold dark of winter two miles through the city. I was like nine. I did the same Wednesday nights for Girl Scouts . I was raking leaves around the neighborhood for extra money and this guy told me to come inside for a pop and I was taught to listen to adults so I went in his creepy dark house sat on his creepy sofa with no lights on cause “ it was hot and the light bulbs made it hotter” I was told and I remember how it smelled weird in there and i wanted to leave and he was giving me a bad vibe and I finally ran yelling I needed to get home for dinner left my dads rake in the yard . My older brother at 12 would jump on trains with his friends . We weren’t havin* great adventures we were being stupid kids making horrible decisions because we had no adult watching us and giving guidance. That letting your kids be “ free “ bs is just ridiculous lazy and delusional thinking. My job is to raise my children in a safe loving environment and have grand adventures with them

Omg,my life exactly with my 4 older siblings,cousins.They had a train track in the backyard,we would jump in & out between the cars.Soo dumb& then the dikes of the Alleghany River.Would tree swing naked into this rushing waters.Throw rocks at the indians on their reservation,broke windows.CCD on monday nights & Girl scouts,brownies.My mother died when i was 11,got lung cancer at 9.. @hensonlaura did you see No Country? Acting is art. I thought his portrayal of the character was a great compliment to the Oscar winning character portrayal of Javiar Bardem as Anton. Night and day , and yes, high levels of intelligence and talent go into this art form.
Sandra Locke wrote a book on her relationship with Clint. And this was a woman that they knew quite well. Sandra had nothing but bad things to say about her. Described her as absolutely nuts and a major manipulator.

@katysummer9418: nasty old narc producer became 92 years old - not even the devil wanted her in hell - go into no contact and do care about yourself only - get you help from a well known therapist who knows what narcissism really means to people. You will learn to love yourself - and that´s the best thing that can happen to us survivors of narc abuse.

I think more accurately, Boomers get accused of being selfish, there's a difference. And that's usually just from young people who feel entitled to what the older people/their parents have/had. Pure narcissism is the new world order among the young now, and it's been an increasing trend for 40 years.
For example a Boomer can't fathom why or how someone becomes an "influencer." They'll tell you to grow up and get a real job. The influencer may actually make more money than the Boomer did, but that's incidental. It's really about the motivation. An influencer doesn't want a boss or coworkers telling them what to do, they must be the center of everything. They don't work well with others.
@@D-Fens_1632it's just taking advantage of an opportunity present in society now. That alone doesn't make it right or wrong, that is what people need to do to get ahead, take advantage of opportunities. I don't think it's healthy to follow a lot of them but that's a different story.

Sadly my ex and our second daughter are so this. My daughter is so much like him mom. I’ve tried. We have spent time, I’ve done so many therapies with her and solo to be the supportive parent, to connect with her, to understand what is happening… I kept asking people over the years from 8-18, what to do. To this day she eats people up. She has no real friends, she has a new love of her life every 6-9 months, the One, and then ruins their lives, goes from love bomber to to angry victim like the switch of a light.. it’s brutal to watch and it seems I can do nothing now … to anyone who it might matter, seek support from people other than therapists. Our education system has failed at the university level. That’s the place I might have done better. If I had better support for myself, maybe I could have seen how to be a better mom. Seen what she needed. I fully know it’s on me; as the parent. I did try. These conversations weren’t there, I could not see the places I could have been present or listened better.. or whatever. We really need healthy community, tribes, when raising kids. …
I was on board with your comment till you got to the part where you claim it essentially "takes a villiage". Children need focused parents not random neighbors. But even a good parent can't always prevail, if the other one is a sabateur. I'm sorry about your child. It's so hard when a child you love is either mentally ill, or just chooses a bad path. I have a niece and nephew that have both chosen to be selfish, hateful and criminal. He's a pedophile on top of it all, & even tried to drown his 2 daughters.

Chaos - Endless Drama - Self Destructive While Pronouncing Loyalty = the hallmarks of the dysfunctional personality and narcissistically abusive person. Josh Brolin is so candid and so on point about the dynamic of his parents relationship - - being neglected while your parents teeter constantly on pulling apart - being miserable but constant appearances being kept up . . . . the rough wake of a narcissistic parent for the family is unfathomable.
