- This is the break down of what those numbers mean on your guard. Here's a little recap
0 Guard - 1/16th of an inch
1 Guard - 1/8th of an inch
1 1/2 Guard - 3/16th of an inch
2 Guard - 2/8th of an inch
3 Guard - 3/8 of an inch
and so on...
Clipper closed is bald or a zero. Clipper open is 1/16th of an inch or a "half"

imRamel thank you for watching the video! Glad I can help. A lot of it will come from just practicing using the guards and being comfortable with them. I’ll have a new tutorial dropping soon so stay tuned!
I bought a whole pack for 8 euro off Amazon

@@thephoenixbarber4435 can you please make a video showing how each guard actually cuts
Finally I’ve been trying to find a video that ACTUALLY explains what the guards do and it’s purpose. Thank you
Of course Im happy that I can help! Thank you for supporting
It's training wheels for hair 🤣so you won't trim off all your hair
Thank you for this so much man. In barber school on my third week and everything is mad confusing. You're the only dude that has made a video explaining this clearly. Thanks again
Hey Andrew quick question, are you attending barber school in California ? If so are they also making you dying first for 200 hours and then actually go to the barber class ?
@@abesalazar4585 I'm in Florida bro
During this whole corona thing I’ve been thinking of picking up this craft and you’ve explained if what I thought was really hard into the most simplified thing ever thanks my dude
TheTruth0492 Thank you so much this made my entire day. It’s comments like this that make the time and effort I spend making these videos completely worth every second of it. I’m glad I could help! 🙌🏽
Gone boy, I'm 60yrs old who says you can't teach a old Dogg,🐕new tricks you the best I've seen trying to explain this technique 👍
Bro I appreciate the love man! You’re still 60 years young! Plenty of life 🙏🏽
This really helped with knowing the difference between open and close and how the guard system works thank you my guy
I really appreciate the love. Thank you for watching and supporting! I'm happy that I can help out
Son, I am 61 years old. I like your humourous video and slow. Quite entertaining.
The most simple and informative of all. No distracting music, silliness. Thank you.
Wow man I'm impressed with your poise for teaching, humor, organization and clarity. Keep it up! I'm a teacher and this is how you teach kids from scratch when you want them to learn. Keep going! I needed this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much for simplifying the attachments and each specific size change with the change of lever position! Best video on RUclips!
This is the only helpful video describing how the guard system works and the open and closed system. I watch a lot of 360jeezy videos and didn’t understand but a more underrated barbered explained it better; much love to you bro
i am the worse at explaining stuff but bro literally taught me more than a barber school would in 5 weeks. thank you all the other yt vids claimed they will make it understandable which they didn’t but you literally got straight to the point and helped me ty
This video is underated like crazy. I dont even know how to cut hair yet but in the process of learning and this broke it down so simply. I understood super clearly. Thank you man so much. This is insanely dumb-a-fide down man 🙏💯
Bro thank you so much. I'm glad that I can help out. I really tried to break it down in a way that I wish someone broke down for me when I was first learning. Thank you for watching and supporting!
Thank you for this video! I just started barbering school and this was very helpful!!
I've literally watched so many videos 10 minutes plus just babbling about a boatload of blades and they couldn't even break down whay you said in less than 6 minutes thank you. This really helped me understand more to perfect my practice in barbering
I had to watch it like 3 times but you kept saying it and I just all of a sudden got it 😂 I started cutting hair yesterday man. I got some babyliss clippers too 🙏🏼
I rewinded the video a more than a few times but I think I finally understand it all. Now I just need to see what each guard cut looks like when used.
Thank you for this video, this is the only tutorial that helped me understand guards and clippers the most. Hope you make more content 👍
JESS THANK YOU❗️👌🏽 GREAT VIDEO made it so easy to understand and you got straight to the point appreciate it

I am a rookie when it comes to men's cut and this really helps a lot. 😘 I'm actually struggling and puzzled about what the lever means and how to use a guard. Now it's getting clear. Thank you so much.!
Perfectly fine we all start from somewhere. I appreciate you supporting my channel. good luck!
Great job explaining the differences between the different clippers and congrats on hitting 1k viewers. To get more views make sure to ask people to like the video and subscribe if they got any value from it. Also, asking a question in your video for people to respond/comment down below helps your engagement with your audience and it helps the RUclips algorithm.
Thank you for watching and supporting. Thank you! It was a long road to 1K but well worth it and I am excited for the future and the direction of this channel. I really appreciate the feedback. I'll definitely keep this in mind moving forward with future videos. Thanks!

@@thephoenixbarber4435 thanks brother I appreciate that. Could you please help me out with something if you don't mind. If I use a 5 for keeping my hair high on the top and I use a 1/2 half guard on my sides high fade how do I blend the top with the side? Your hope will be greatly appreciated. By the way my hair is like thick Mexican type. Thanks
I been a hairstylist for 5 year finally something that makes senseee!! wow thank u

Thank you this helped to give me an idea what to use I try to do my son's hair he doesn't do well at a place I'd rather deal with it at home and if i leave it up to hubby he would just completely shave everything off and that's a no go for me 🤣.
Thanks for the clear explanation!
This is trully helpful. Thank you so much !
Wow. I feel like a pro now. Thank

@@thephoenixbarber4435 I'm subbed you know what "beginner" means. Stay healthy.
Thank you so
much dawg 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
thanks bro i understand the guards now
you enlighten me with this..thanks a lot
Thanks that was so helpful and a success for my portfolio including all INFORMATICS shared then only one thing left is now acknowledged criteria of lengths because the eye witness que as multiple intelligences array visually then last statement registered the inches as perfected and of courses the levers INCLUSIONARY fundamentals acts upon visually mathematics. Thanks .
I think it would be interesting to do a video addressing which guards you use for specific actions . Would this be possible ?
Thanks, these videos are very useful and easy to follow, much needed! Question, what’s the point of having a specific guard for 1.5 when this can be achieved simply by opening the lever on #1? Or have I missed something?
It helps with making the blend transition between the #1 and #2 very smooth. You dont "need" it if you have your technique down but it does help alot. and everyones hair fades differently. opening the #1 lever doesn't open directly into the #2 with the Wahl clippers. It opens up to a 3/16 instead of 4/16 which is the #2 guard or 2/8th. remember opening the lever only adds 1/16th
Thank you so much bro 💪🏾❤️❗️
This is dope needed this thanks
Glad I could help, thank you for watching!
Thank you so much 💙 ❤ 🥳 💓 💗

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Thank You!
i wish you were my math teacher .. it is clear now for me sir.. thank you
Oh man, you do not want me as your math teacher lol. Thank you for watching and supporting I'm glad I could help!
Thanks so much I understand a lot better now, one question since I have three clicks on the lever, is that 0, 1, and 1 1/2 ?
Damn I had a gaurd that was a 000 it blended that zero gap right on out that .5 Don't do it u still gotta have that barbers eye and skillz i lost it moving
this video is awesome
Thank you so much for watching and supporting!
when you're doing it yourself. The sides shouldn't be too hard. it's the back and then the top will be the challenge for many. But then again with most currently out of work. Any mistakes can be covered with wearing a hat when going out.
I completely agree with you. It's always that blend going into the top of the hair that makes it really challenging depending on the haircut you want. Although, like you said if you mess up just go out with a hat lol
Ok but this was very helpful and I understood very clearly !
Absolutely, I’m glad I could help. Please reach out if you have any other questions
I just graduated from cos school... I only know clipper over comb and guards confuse me so much! Hopefully this video helps.
Congratulations! Hopefully it helps. I work with Cosmos all the time at the school I teach at. So I definitely get the separation. If you have any other questions you could reach me at my Insta @thephoenixbarber 🤙🏽
A big help thx
Of course brotha, thank you for supporting my channel!
Very good
Thank you for the videoooo
Of course, thanks for watching! 🤟🏽
Perfect thanks 🙏🏽
Thank you for watching!
Best teacher
Thank you for supporting! I appreciate it
Thank you so much for the help. I would like to ask a question that crossed my mind whilst watching the video. If we say for example that a 1 guard closed is 1 and 1 open is 1 and a half, why would we need another guard to our set when we can just open the lever. The same goes for the half guard.
because you still have a gap from the #1 guard open and the #2 guard close. Same goes for no blade open and #1 guard closed. The detail in-between those guards are crucial when creating a blurry fade
What does closed or zero mean in inch?
The 0 got me confused at first since mathematically it should have been called a 1/2. Otherwise your explanation made perfect sense. Thank you 😊
Where did u but your guards for wahl, I need a zero guard but I can’t find any store that sells them.
Thanks you help me
Nice video
Thanks for watching!
Mine goes from 15 12 9 6 3 left and right ear and I got number on mine that u push up to have the blade up more or less lol
Do you play the piano? You have such beautiful, long fingers. Artistic hands.
Thanks bro
Thanks a lot for the video.
How about the wahl ear taper guards? What's their size range (the ear taper gards starts from #1 1/2 or #2?)? There's no information about these guards... :(
Great video brother! May I know what should I do to get a similar effect of .5 if the clipper I bought doesn't have this "open close" lever feature? It's a budget model called Xiaomi Enchen.
Thank you for watching and supporting! I am not too sure on the clipper you have. It is probably not a fading clipper on which my video is directed towards since it does not have a lever to adjust the blade.
I was told since the 1 guard open is 1 1/2 to only use the 3/16 guard in the halfway position with the lever. And the same with the 0 guard. I see a lot of barbers just open close. Those guards were designed to fill the gap by using the lever in the halfway position ?
You're the best
What about when you have the 0 or 1/16 guard on with it being closed what do you call that?
