You had me at "it's not the for customers to know, it's nice if they do, but it's your job to explain it to them" loved it. In any profession this is true, sales, retail, botany, and everything in between
once you figure out how to talk to your barber it's like having sex .... but in order to be confident (talking to your barber or banging girls) you have to learn all the techniques haha it's true my friends are so annoying and always complain about their haircuts but never put the effort into learning what fades are .... now i get all sorts of different fades all in one lol
Clients too. Too many times, a client asks me for a taper and what they really wanted was a fade. Actually, just yesterday a client asked me for a taper with a top trim. Then I clarified it by asking if he just wanted to fade the sideburns and neck. He said “Yeah like a low fade”. Now it would have been easy to figure out what he wanted if his hair was previously cut like that, but no he had gentlemen’s cut look. I just gave him a low taper fade. Not sure if that’s exactly what he wanted but oh well 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you! You explained that perfectly. I have taken my son to a lot of places the last couple of years now looking for a barber/stylist. One that takes care of their customers. One that pride themselves in their abilities to give their customers an experience they look forward too. I have asked so many what the difference was and none of them actually answered my question. So I have come to the point where I am willing to go to school to learn how to cut hair to be able to give my son an awesome experience and whatever he decides to get down the road. You have made things a lot easier actually knowing the difference. And now that I do I know exactly what I am lookin* for and at when it’s being done. Thank you again. Keep up the Great Work!
Thank you for posting your definitions of a taper and a fade. I'm one of those old barbers whose definition is a little different than yours. This is my definition and then some explanations: The term "taper" had been used in traditional men's barbering long before the term "fade" which was introduced to define a specific type of "taper". That said, a taper is the generic term for both. The main difference between the two are the tools used and the length of hair intended or amount of skin shown. A classic taper retains length while graduating from the longer lengths at the crest of the head to the shorter lengths at the nape and the sideburns. The tools used scissors/shears, combs, clippers, outliners. The scissors/shears are probably the most important tool when creating a taper. The skills involved include club cutting (scissor over knuckle), scissor over comb, clipper over comb and general direct clipper cutting. Is it possible to taper hair without using clippers? Yes, most true tapers can be done with scissors. In general and until the term "fade" was introduced into modern men's barbering. There were high, medium and low tapers. A high taper from back then would be closer to a medium low fade today. A medium or low taper always had hair left in place, especially in the sideburn area. Fades are a new, extreme form of tapering that rely on clippers and foils in order to remove the greatest amount of hair, often just leaving skin. We used to talk about the "graduation" in tapers, today I talk about "transitions" in fades. Your example was a good one from a modern perspective. You are a young barber who grew up with fading as the norm and you are trying to establish a definition of a taper that works for you. The back taper you did was very good. I would call it a short taper. The side area was not tapered, it was faded. I would have expected more length left on the side and a sideburn retained. The work you did was excellent. I think you took on a difficult topic and did good job with it. I hope you don't mind the long-winded opinion of an older barber. Max
Thanks, man! The terms are very confusing. I thought by separating the two words it would be easier to understand. In reality taper=fade. But that just makes things even more confusing doesn’t it? So let’s just say taper is side burns and neck line and fade is all around.
Andy Tran Not a bad idea. The art behind both is a smooth, seamless finish with the hair getting progressively shorter. That’s the geometry behind tapers and fades.
xDKuatemoKxD You’re welcome. I know it’s not an easy topic because the terms are often used interchangeably. It helps to have some “old school” knowledge. I’m glad I was able to help you.
Maxwell Smart I completely agree! A fade and a taper are the same thing other than a fade being shorter. I’ve been cutting hair for 23 years now and when I started it was called a taper. The term fade was primarily used when cutting African American clients.
This whole time I’ve been asking for a low taper fade when I wanted a low bald fade. And I’ve been watching a lot of barber videos over the years!! You should definitely do a series about this. Explaining the different meanings of haircuts, detailing all the specifications so there’s to cause no confusion. And so the barber knows what the client wants, instead of the client not knowing what they’re asking for! (me lol).

Very few of my clients actually know the difference. Ive had to explain it the difference several times.. sometimes i dont say anything and just do the taper and show them at the end. 99% of the time the younger generation really goes for it and they love it. Many clients are just sitting ang telling the barber “ i just want tapered on the sides with No. 2 guard”. I might need your explanation to educate my clients. Tnx.
Good point, always ask/educate the client. Most barbers assume clients want the same, which I learned the hard way; dude rounded my beard & never did he ask to touch it up. Made my face look all droopy like that cartoon character! Good vid!
Im a bit late but hell yeah dude I got a very thick, straight and spiky hair which is really annoying. Not even fades works on me because of this hair. Would be good to know some hairstyle for my hybrid-ass hair.
@@tonyle66 If you ever save enough money you could get a perm. I've had straight hair since I was born and I tried out every hairstyle I could. Some good, some bad, but it's really refreshing to try something compleeetely different. Plus its pretty easy to manage. Pretty expensive tho

Dope. I was always confused why the barber kept cutting my beautiful hair too high. I say like fade just the sides and back up.. Get up from the chair looking turkey neck bald.. Wtf.😂 so I appreciate it.
First time doing my husband AND kid’s hair! Muahahaha (evil laugh). Gonna try a fade on Husband and a taper on son (7yo) and if I screw up, I screw up..everyone’s quarantined anyway 🤷🏻♀️
Lou Wee I’ve been binge watching all these hair cutting videos and found this channel. Just purchased the Wahl cordless Magic clippers and will see how this goes. My sons are young, 5 and 7, so they hopefully won’t be too critical of how it turns out. Great explanation between fade and taper. I can totally appreciate the art now that I’m faced with cutting my kids’ hair.
Yesterday, I asked for a taper on sideburns and neckline, but the barber didn't know what that meant 😂Instead, he asked me where to fade in. Thanks for your video that tells me I was not wrong. Now I know he was definitely new there.
Up until '96 I got fades. A friend offered to cut my hair and said a taper would work better for me. I hadn't even heard of them up til then. I loved it and been getting tapered ever since.
It's cool to watch these barber vids cus me and my Bros been cutting each other's hair since we were kids. We never had training but somehow we figured out the techniques with the comb, guards, and clippers.. watching these professional barbers is just like watching my bro cut hair. Plus, there was no internet in 1990!!
Thank you Im a new subscriber!!! Just recently found out that Taper was the look I want not fade. Im a hairstylist so this was new lingo for me to learn to tell my Barber 🤗👍🏼
Can anyone help me to decide what to get on the sides I slick my hair back and I’ve been getting a 1 on the sides for my whole life and ima go to a different barber and I’m thinking about getting a fade like style on the sides but what should I get I’m staring to think about getting a taper but ima show him a picture of it
Hold Up! Hold Up!🤚...SO, if thats the difference between a fade and a taper.... Whats the difference between that Taper and a Blowout?!?! (Or some people say just a blowout on the sides and back) SEND HELP.
I'm a unisex hairdresser, never been trained in barbering. We have very different methods of cutting. As a bloke, I like to venture into a bit of barbering, much more so than most of my female colleagues. I found this interesting and informative. I'd also like clients to know that barbering is quite different to hairdressing. If you want a super sharp taper or fade or a crispy line up.... the barber is the place to go. Myself, I will always try to accommodate any client and do what they ask to the best of my abilities. I would love to be as good at barbering as I am at hairdressing.
Man I remember when I went to another barber cause mine was on vacation and this was two days before I leave on my vacation long story short I asked him for a #2 with the grain low taper this guy cut me bald completely I was so upset but moral of the story don’t go to another barber stick with yours
The taper fade is very popular taper fade came out around 1998 when I started High School maybe 1997 but it's crazy how it still exist today and people of all nationalities love this fade in 2019 nice
The place I go to, the guys there cut hair really good. You just need to explain to them how you want it, and thats what i didnt know. But now i know its taper and not mid fadr what I want. THANK YOU
I use to get tapers now I get fades I feel fades last longer... debating between low , medium or high taper drop fade I believe medium drop fade is best? What you think?
DUDE this whole time I'd be so pissed at my barber for fading too high when all along what I really wanted was a taper🤦🏽♂️
Thank God I watched this
haha good
Emmanuel Reyes same
Theres low, mid and high fade, and im pretty sure you can ask for a fade that goes down to a 1 rather than saying a taper
Emmanuel Reyes holy shit, is this why my cuts look so good initially but then the barber keeps going past the 1st guideline and I’m like YO WTF HOMIE!

Hi, Andy, I wanna know how to do fade when the client's head is not round, you know, sometimes the back side of head is flat.
Thank you for posting your definitions of a taper and a fade. I'm one of those old barbers whose definition is a little different than yours. This is my definition and then some explanations:

Many clients are just sitting ang telling the barber “ i just want tapered on the sides with No. 2 guard”. I might need your explanation to educate my clients. Tnx.
Good point, always ask/educate the client. Most barbers assume clients want the same, which I learned the hard way; dude rounded my beard & never did he ask to touch it up. Made my face look all droopy like that cartoon character! Good vid!
Plain and simple demonstration. Thanks.
you got it
Can you do one on Asian hair options/styles? I've been stuck with the hedgehog haircut for ages and want some new options :P
Yes, I’ll look into doing something for you guys
Spike or hard side part
Im a bit late but hell yeah dude I got a very thick, straight and spiky hair which is really annoying. Not even fades works on me because of this hair. Would be good to know some hairstyle for my hybrid-ass hair.
@@tonyle66 If you ever save enough money you could get a perm. I've had straight hair since I was born and I tried out every hairstyle I could. Some good, some bad, but it's really refreshing to try something compleeetely different. Plus its pretty easy to manage. Pretty expensive tho
@@tonyle66 jackass get a 2 and a half and a mid fade gg
Out of many videos, this one has helped the most
Nice.
Stumbled upon this video in desperate need of help-With this quarantine in place... my man wants me to cut his hair ...and I have 0 experice !! BUT, I am open to learning and I think I've got my go-to Barber Teacher ! thanks for the video the quality , I appreciate being able to see so up close ( specially cause I'm not wearing my glasses) the quality is great and you were very detailed!
Thank you!! Stay tune for the next few videos. Make sure you sub and check it out. I’m making a couple videos of how to cut hair at home
Dope. I was always confused why the barber kept cutting my beautiful hair too high.
I say like fade just the sides and back up.. Get up from the chair looking turkey neck bald.. Wtf.😂 so I appreciate it.
"My beautiful hair" are you gay lmao
Bruh the sides grow back in like 1-2 weeks
I'm a barber but i didn't know what's the difference between taper and faded until i watched this video, thanks man
First time doing my husband AND kid’s hair! Muahahaha (evil laugh). Gonna try a fade on Husband and a taper on son (7yo) and if I screw up, I screw up..everyone’s quarantined anyway 🤷🏻♀️
It’s not easy. But good job on trying and bravo on them letting you! Haha
I love it I’m a cosmetologist. I didn’t know this. Thank you.
Taper is my choice just because the contrast between scalp and hair a lot closer/apparent...tight tapers definitely gives that “just barbered” look
who else didnt know what he was saying but kept watching
excellent video and your responses are very professional! class act!!
Hahah thank you.
When I ask for a taper I get my barber kinda does the bit behind my ear too
I’m pretty sure it’s prolly a taper fade
You're a good teacher.
Thank you so much!
Man, I'm always getting a different answer to this question.. thx
When my barber try to say it's the same thing 😂 felt like smacking him
Honestly, this is on barbers. Their customers didn’t go to hair cutting school. They don’t need to know this.
Great cutting and explaining. Keep it up my brother.
Thank you. More videos coming soon!
Thank you ! More please I need to learn the fades, low, med, and high,I find them confusing when they talk about guard,1/2 guard etc
Make sure you check out my other videos! More to come
Yesterday, I asked for a taper on sideburns and neckline, but the barber didn't know what that meant 😂Instead, he asked me where to fade in. Thanks for your video that tells me I was not wrong. Now I know he was definitely new there.
This channel is so necessary
Thanks! Glad you’re watching it. I’m doing a live stream for Q&A on Monday. Check in!
came across this video looking for some temple fade inspo. Thanks for the explanation Andy!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.. I’m doing a live stream on Monday Q&A be sure to check it out
your intro made me sub
Hahah thanks
Thanks Andy for defining Taper & Fade. It helps a beginner like me.
You're welcome
Up until '96 I got fades. A friend offered to cut my hair and said a taper would work better for me. I hadn't even heard of them up til then. I loved it and been getting tapered ever since.
A lot of people get it without knowing they are getting it
Dude you are the best. Would actually kill for you to come to Sydney to cut my hair! Haha
One day...
How about a video encapsulating barber jargon with models....it could be an entire series....thanks for sharing...look forward to your product line🤑
never knew the difference.
also, sorry but 6:21 is hilarious 👀
It's cool to watch these barber vids cus me and my Bros been cutting each other's hair since we were kids. We never had training but somehow we figured out the techniques with the comb, guards, and clippers.. watching these professional barbers is just like watching my bro cut hair. Plus, there was no internet in 1990!!
Thank you Im a new subscriber!!! Just recently found out that Taper was the look I want not fade. Im a hairstylist so this was new lingo for me to learn to tell my Barber 🤗👍🏼
Can anyone help me to decide what to get on the sides I slick my hair back and I’ve been getting a 1 on the sides for my whole life and ima go to a different barber and I’m thinking about getting a fade like style on the sides but what should I get I’m staring to think about getting a taper but ima show him a picture of it
So, you did a medium taper on the sides, and a low taper in the back, correct?
Hold Up! Hold Up!🤚...SO, if thats the difference between a fade and a taper....
Whats the difference between that Taper and a Blowout?!?!
(Or some people say just a blowout on the sides and back)
SEND HELP.
Blow out here are usually when it’s a zero to a number 4 or higher.
@@AndysCuts so I get a high fade with a 0 on the back+sides and a 4 on top, is that called a blowout?
I was definitely mistaken. Thank you for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Yeah. Just stick with your barber. But always have a backup barber just Incase your barber is out of town
Thank you so much bro! Subbed!
Thanks for watching!
I just learned I’ve been asking for the wrong hairstyle for the past 8 months #getataperbro
Tip for clippers over comb work. Use a black comb for white/ light hair. Use a white comb for darker colored hair.
The taper fade is very popular taper fade came out around 1998 when I started High School maybe 1997 but it's crazy how it still exist today and people of all nationalities love this fade in 2019 nice
Yeaah it's just called taper not "taper fade" :)
Taper looks way better, too many dodgy fades around these days
Hey man where r u located? I would love to pay for a haircut
He makes his $$ off of RUclips videos now. He don't cut hair on the streets anymore
What about a taper fade? I had a barber tell me “taper or taper fade?” I was like wtf
That would be like a number 1+ with a. Skin taper
Taper fade is when you that’s that fade from the back of your ear aswell
Bro i had no idea you were a barber. Even better. Tech talk with the cams and barbering. 💪🏽💪🏽
Yes sir
The place I go to, the guys there cut hair really good. You just need to explain to them how you want it, and thats what i didnt know. But now i know its taper and not mid fadr what I want.
THANK YOU
You’re welcoe
Barbers don't get taught telepathy, though I wish they did. Unfortunately an explanation is needed
I use to get tapers now I get fades I feel fades last longer... debating between low , medium or high taper drop fade
I believe medium drop fade is best? What you think?
Two years late but it's all good. I would go with a low fade
