Hey Guys!! Lots of you requested longer instructional videos in addition to my weekly vlogs...this is a preview of a longer, complete video on my website: cesarsantos.com/ The website is safe and fast!
I like the idea that you’re offering these longer form videos. I have your Liledahl Portrait Secrets video and think it is excellent. Any plans for you to offer physical DVD versions of your own productions? I prefer a physical copy. If available. Cheers Cesar, stay well.
Cesar Santos thanks Cesar, I’ll have to check them out. The color mixing aspect of your portrait painting DVD is excellent. Covering the local color, the tints and shades, as well as the value of warm and cool versions of the same value to keep things dynamic. I’m interested in the limited palette focus you include in this video. Turning the form on those simple spheres is a great idea, I will give that a try. I like how the form is simplified. Would be interested to get you thoughts on differences in color , generally in different areas of the head. More yellow in the forehead, more red in the nose cheeks and ears, more grey in the mouth and jaw.
Cesar Santos Cesar, maybe for a future video I’d be interested to have you revisit line. Specifically line weight, how weight can be used to suggest gesture or movement or light. Also how line can be used to describe form, through hatching, or just shape. Line seems like an underutilized aspect of drawing. Many artists jump to shading and value to describe form. I’m thinking of some wonderful silverpoint drawings of the renaissance masters that beautifully conveyed form with line work.
I am living in an apt for the 1st time since the 80s and have taken quite some time to figure out how to light my subject and palette. I have seen art supplies stored in a closet! I realize that I need to have a painting or a long drawing on the go so that I always have time to put in even 20 mins and it helped to put several pieces of furniture on casters. Lots of free info out there now to inspire you! _And it is ALL for free!_
Cezar I’ve studied you a lot during the CV. Every morning I get up at 5 am and watch RUclips or videos for two hours. You have the hands of a skilled surgeon. When you combine it with your work ethic and standards it is exceptional. I cannot duplicate your hands. I’ve seen few that could. KOKO and keep raising your expectations. You are a real role model for any artist at any level. Work work work! You have a beautiful wife also great model.
Thank you for your videos, i was having such a hard time dealing with the stay home order here in chicago, my school had to shut down for the remainder of the semester. You videos really put me back in a space to create again I’m so grateful for your channel
Wow this was excatly what I needed! I have purchased all your DVDs, and I am loving these new segments of classes coming from the Best artists. I myself am to busy to ever go to a school in florence and learn like a master, Because my career is in finance but on weekends I try to put time to try to improve. I am still a virgin when it comes to oil paints and achieveing that realism as you do. p.s One thing I notice tiny cretic in this purcahse there was not any Palate to canves carma angles like in the other videos. helps alot for a beginner to see and also apply. Thank you My Master Professor Cesar Santos !
Thank you!! I understand your observation, this video is intense in showing skin color mixing, how the palette works and the demo. I didn't want to extend the video too much to keep the low price.
Thanks Cesar I have your figure and portrait dvds, but somehow this one seems to make more sense to me! I really struggle with colour and I didn’t even realise you offered full lessons on your site.It was well worth the purchase 😀 please make more 😂
Thank you cesar santos i follow you from iraq . U make me love art again and i back powerfull after i left the drawing alomst over year and half . Cuz of depresstion and pregnencey.
5:43 classical white skin is pretty gray, pushes saturation from transition from light to halftone And can play more freely with hues in the ambient light/mid shadow areas
Hi to you I love your work way so cool I don't have paint money is tight so my artwork is pencils ballpoint pen color pencils gel pen and marker and I love all colors thanks for your video
Hey Cesar, I bought the full video it’s great! I am having an issue though my paints keep drying before I can blend them together? I tried about four times already. any chance of a video explanation of drying times and blending techniques - I’m going crazy 😜
Un gran referente en la pintura clásica en tiempos modernos, aunke no hable en español se le entiende bastante bien, siempre que se sepa la jerga de la pintura básica en ingles claro, gracias cesar.s.
Hi Cesar, could you do a demo where you apply the study if the sphere by tacking a portrait of Caucasian master portrait And turning the skin into the black sphere color you did And make it believable? I have no problems doing spheres or painting from a reference But the moment I try to do this type of transfer it becomes....”unbelievable”
Man, this is beautiful! Although I didn't understand why there's an alternation between a warm highlight which then goes into the cool mid-tone and then a warm shadow again (in light skin complex)
Hi Cesar. Just bought this video. I really love it - especially the first half! You have inspired me to paint portraits. I was curious that after the zorn palette description, you do not use the three colors on the far left side of the palette for either skin tone. Are these colors optional? or are these colors strictly used when applying variation to the shadows?
You are a Great painter/artist Ceasar but that was too 'truncated' and poorly explained I feel. A need to demonstrate the "three dimensional" nature of Colur is essential - Hue Value, Chroma, Saturation etc. Plus the nature of Light, on local colour, direct, reflective give an the Umbra/Penumbra nature of the shadow transition. Love all your work!
But what to do when one mixed color is over. You will never mix the same color again. Especially when one of the color you use in your mixture is another mixed color.
I’ve enjoyed the mini-instructionals of your self-portrait. Do you cover all of this in your Secrets of Portrait Painting video to avoid purchasing the same information twice? $200 for 20 hours is more than fair; anyone who’s ever attended a workshop could tell you that. I spent (a very enjoyable) $600 for a week-long watercolor workshop with Mary Whyte, a phenomenal artist (plus hotel and food!)
The secrets of portrait painting video is nine hours long and several DVDs. I bought it and it is excellent. I’ve found Cesar’s RUclips videos to be valuable compliments to the DVDs. I’m sure the videos on his website will be highly useful as well. I feel that the vast majority of portrait painters interested in classical realism will benefit from most any information they can glean from Cesar.
Hello! Great video! I have problem with the thinners, I prefer turpentine than linseed oil, however turpentine makes me so sick! whats your advise please :)
Use solvent from Winsor & Newton. Same characteristics as turpentine, but odorless. However, it is still toxic to breathe. If you want to have non-toxic option, buy mineral spirits. They are odorless, less toxic and can be used as thinners... If you want something more oily... get safflower oil (dries longer) or liquin (dries fast - good for imprimatura)
People may be stocking on toilet paper due to Corona virus, but us painters better stock up on lead white before they ban it! (kinda joking) I hope they do not ban it. Lead white is what made such beautiful glowing skin tones from our beloved Old Masters' works.
hi cesar. is this video included in the dvd that’s available on amazon for 200usd? I want to get it but I’d like to get as much and updated material as I can
It's not entirely true that more light on the skin means more chroma. Yes, it does get less black (more chroma), but it also gets more white (less chroma). In actuality, shadows are lower in value and more saturated, light areas are more light and less saturated. And during this light to dark transition, hue slightly shifts to whatever makes more sense to you. A very confusing topic tbh. Better off just color picking in photoshop to learn better. Hope this helps someone.
Hi, i understand that you are a professional painter and so you tell us to see the complete video on your website, but so why do you put this kind of videos on YT?? They are incomplete and unuseful
I really understand that Y.T. is a platform that can be used to "sponsor" your own work, but sometimes, when you are just a young guy with no mutch money to spend , it's really frustrating to be able to see just the preview. This is also amplified by being in Italy during this period of quarantine. Btw you're a really impressive artist and i really love your works.❤
@@mattyvis7818 hi mate. I am sorry about what is happening in Italy. I still have not visited your beautiful country. Rather than to search for a single shortcut guide, try to think about how and why he is painting the stuff he paints and you can learn more than that way... A lot is said in this video without words...
thebones that’s a silly statement. The video is an excerpt of a longer format instruction available for sale. At most you could say it is a trailer, or an advertisement. Certainly not clickbait. The information on the limited palette, the exercise turning the form in the fleshtones, the theory behind what he’s doing is valuable even in the 5 minute format. You’re like a kid complaining about the flavor of free ice cream.

That DVD is from 2014. After three years of sharing my Art-thoughts here on RUclips, the demand grew for more instructional videos. So I created a site for all who want to keep learning my way of painting. You'll be back!
I'm sure there's lots of good info here, but it's so fragmented as to be almost useless. I understand this was supposed to be a teaser for a longer video, but this is kind of a waste of 6 minutes and 31 seconds.
