      Yes. Great review. To bad she doesn’t talk about how crappy the camera is. At a minimum I would expect it to be as good as the one on the X1 carbon. Absolute garbage. Check out the forums. They drop the ball on this one and with recourse. BS.

      @@christopherlane486 I’ve completely changed my mind on this laptop after a couple of years of use. Not buying Lenovo ever again. Subpar Linux support for a thinkpad. Camera not great as you said. Noisy. Underpowered graphics for a 4K screen.

    Excellent review Lisa. I watched your original X1 Yoga review and purchased the original X1 Yoga and love it. I will probably get a new X1 Yoga when they release a PCIe 4.0 M.2 dive. Also with the higher memory density these days, 32GB would be nice.

  • @brutalhonesty07
    @brutalhonesty07 5 лет назад +4

    Three reasons this won’t be a buy from me:
    1. Loss the microSDcard slot. That’s a hassle for audio and photo file transference while on the go.
    2. Aluminum framing makes me think ill feel the heat of the laptop on my lap more than I did with the carbon-fiber frame.
    3. 4K display seems wasted as well on the demand for power for it.
    Gen 3 was ideal on the X1 Yoga.
    Would also be interested in AMD CPU’s as well not just intel ones in this model.

    I wish they stuck with the QHD HDR display from last generation, looks like the 4k display is a slight downgrade in colour gamut and brightness in exchange for resolution that's overkill at 14" and the battery life hit to go with it.

    • @TheRIZKYRAMA
      @TheRIZKYRAMA 5 лет назад +4

      yeah I don't understand this. 4k is wasted on a small display like this. also, the X1 extreme only have FHD or UHD option, there is no middle ground for QHD, it frustrates me a lot.

    • @c433z
      @c433z 5 лет назад +4

      Yup. Plus the drop of the microsd slot, looks like I'll just save some money and get a used one from last gen.

      I understand you, but as I will definitely buy a 4K desktop monitor, I will also prefer buying a 4K laptop display because switching to and from lenovo docking should work better according to scaling in windows. Am I right?

    • @ChrisUrbinsky
      @ChrisUrbinsky 5 лет назад

      @@hullahupp I think it would be the opposite actually. If you want to use both as extended displays it's nice to run them with the same scaling. Which won't be possible if you have mismatched monitor sizes with the same resolution. Scaling that works for a 14" screen won't work well for a 27"+ 4K monitor.

    Great review. This is on sale for only $1529 on Lenovo today. The most updated version with Dolby and 470 nits. For my purposes, this will be a great choice!
    Update: After spending three hours on hold, and requesting 7 call backs, how can anyone buy directly from Lenovo. I tried to order as a business as well, same treatment. This kind of service can't be tolerated. I cancelled my order and finding another vendor. How can anyone recommend this brand when the customer service is so non-existent?

    Thanks Lisa for nice video.
    My thoughts after 3 months of using yoga gen 4 are not so positive though: 3/5 stars.
    The key pressing is too light, which results in accidental pressing,
    and so it is hard to rest the fingers on the keys.
    The surface is easily scratchable.
    Whine-coil: I can hear it in a quiet room. A laptop of 1700 euros should not have a whine-coil.
    Dust got on the web-camera _under_ the glass. No idea how it got there: I only used it at home, on the clean desk.
    Touchpad and trackpoint: the touchpad is a sensitive in a way that it triggers touches when I work with trackpoint.
    As a result, it triggers unintended clicks. In fact, it is the same old problem as with T420. They didn't fix it.
    Regarding performance and noise --- excellent (to my subjective feelings).
    Overall: 65/100. (Meaning: if it cost 0.65*1700 = 1100, that would be a perfect machine.)

    Not sure the constant drive for thin laptops is good. I don’t want to work with my beautiful Screen throttled back to get battery life.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 5 лет назад +3

      Maybe you should start your own computer business and design a bigger laptop and watch the business go under within a few months! The problem is that the average consumers want thin and light, gamers buy gaming machines, pro’s usually use desktops in their studios for max performance.
      OEM’s are not in business to go bust, they do their research and although they realise there are a small minority that moan about thin and light, the core sales are in that sector, so that is where they have to compete. Try the notebooks like the Gram and Matebook X Pro and you will understand why consumers are buying these.
      Of course Intel forgetting they promised 10nm by 2016 and 7nm by 2018 OEMs have had no help from the SOC. Once Intel get their act together, 2021 for 45w 10nm, five years late, then thin and light will not need to be throttled as much. Graphemes batteries also by then?

    It might look good, but you'll be splurging for ram since it's not upgradable. I would rather have a little bit of girth more than no upgrade options. It's one of the reasons Apple is such a poor value today and I wish other manufacturers wouldn't copy them. On the other hand if your lose with money, why not? But personally I am not. I still find the Latitude 7000 series a way better value as a result. You'll pay about the same but it can upgrade with you and as a result last with you longer.

      I have been wondering the same thing. The big differences I can tell in terms of specs of fully equiped models is with there respective i7s. The Yoga X1 comes with a i7-8650U whiskey lake processor where as the Yoga c930 comes with a i7-8550U kaby lake processor. The X1 can come with a full HD screen that gives it better battery life but there essentially equal in endurance when equipped with the UHD screens. The only other difference I can see is the X1 having an optional IR camera for Windows hello

      AGREED! I JUST returned my dream computer, the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd gen, because the key travel was just SO low compared to what I'm used to (Thinkpad T440s), and as a writer, I NEED a keyboard I can depend on. I tried for over a week to get used to it, and it was admittedly a very COMFY keyboard (soft touch was really nice), but it was almost TOO quiet, barely any audible/tactile feedback, and my fingers literally hurt after a few MINUTES of typing, whereas on my old comp, I can type ALL DAY. Yikes! :( I can't believe they'd mess with the KEYBOARD, of all things. So sad! I decided to stay with my 5+ year old T440s for now, maybe upgrade it when I need it. Until I find a comparable keyboard, no way in hell that I'm switching!

    Losing the retracting keyboard may be a good thing: I bought the 3rd gen last year and scratched the touchpad in tablet mode with a tiny piece of grit on the desk. Maybe the unretracted keys will lift the laptop far enough to prevent this?
    Incidentally, I'd never buy a Lenovo product again. The build quality of my 3rd gen yoga was atrocious and I sent it back. The black paint flaked off the sides, the lid didn't shut flush against the base, the privacy shutter didn't move, and the keys around the red nub got stuck underneath it...
    I didn't find the yoga flip design very useful either. It was not convenient to switch between the modes and, even in tablet mode, the writing position (for notes) was awkward.
    I think the hinge on the leather hp folio is way more practical. I hope they put out a new version this year without that crazy 16:9 ratio...

    Okay, first of all, I LOVE your shirt! Hahaha! I wish I had it! Secondly, what I REALLY want to know is, is it better than the 3rd gen? I mean, I personally like the 3rd gen MUCH better for a number of reasons - SD card slot, headphone jack on the RIGHT side (why on the left now? WHY?!), the dark black color, the magnesium-carbon fiber construction, maybe others, and I want to know WHAT they were thinking with taking away the Wave keyboard?! PFFT! That was one of the BIGGEST selling points! - but I'd like to know what you think, Lisa (and anyone else who'd like to share)! :D

    Hi kindly suggest as to one should go for higher resolution or higher nits in new X1 Yoga ?
    14.0" FHD (1920x1080), IPS, 400nits
    Or
    14.0" WQHD (2560x1440) 300nits.

      Bharpreet25 hmm. I might get 1080p for more nits, longer battery life and spend on better proc and ram, and just dock it to 4K monitor at home when working on 4K content 🧐 what do you think?

    Is that metal chassis' front edge now sharp enough to cut carrots, like the Yoga C930? LOVE that thing around my wrists.

    hi Lisa! what would you choose between the 14.0" WQHD (2560 x 1440) 280 nits, IPS, multi-touch, glossy vs 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) 380 nits, IPS, low power, multi-touch, glossy? i would have gone uhd but it is currently unavailable right now. i would be using it mostly for photo and video editing. thank you!

    Is it worth paying extra to get the 4th gen? In your 3rd gen review you said the display was 100% sRGB and 100% Adobe RGB, but on the 4th gen you say only 87% Adobe RGB. Does this mean they have gone backwards?

    • @7Write4This9Heart7
      @7Write4This9Heart7 5 лет назад +1

      It certainly looks like it, but I would maybe research a little more to be sure. Maybe the last one drained too much battery or something, so they had to downgrade?

    • @jhixx8910
      @jhixx8910 4 года назад

      no, if you don't use that colour space. SRGB and P3 is enough for the average person, because that extra percentage will result in more vivid colours which will make everything oversaturated

    Nub scrolling on this is buttery smooth compared to the other Thinkpads I've tried (the P1 and L380). This might have something to do with the Élan driver.

    I don't like aluminium. It's not comfy on hands much as typical ThinkPad plastic. Also aluminium absorbs lot of cold. Hate to touch my MacBook when it is very cold. Also aluminium is slippery, again you have to put more effort. It will also be heavy to carry.

    • @7Write4This9Heart7
      @7Write4This9Heart7 5 лет назад

      Agreed! (Although the 'plastic' is actually a magnesium-carbon fiber alloy. Very light and durable!)

    Huh. I just noticed that they put a Western Digital NVMe SSD in my i5-8365U with 16 GB RAM and FHD screen instead of the Samsung drive. Weird... I mean, it's still great, plenty fast, and I can always save money and upgrade it myself later, but still seems strange that they didn't give me an option between the two. lol. Hope that's still okay! What do you think, Lisa, @MobileTecReview ?

    Has anyone tried the WQHD display? I'm concerned with how dim it is. Lenovo's sight rates it at 280 nits. That's 100 nits dimmer than the FHD and 190 nits below the UHD! 1080 is a step down so the FHD is out of the question but don't need 4K...I don't want to take the battery life hit of the UHD display either. But if the WQHD is so dim it will be hard to use in a bright room then I might have to rethink the UHD.
