    i like how they bash leaf springs...a transverse leaf spring reduces deflection and acts as an anti roll bar, while being lighter than conventional springs and, lowers the center of gravity, and has much better wear characteristics. the way its implemented in the corvette is rather ingenious...

    • @JonPrevost
      @JonPrevost 6 лет назад +57

      It has a lot more in common with F1 flexure suspension spring systems then leaf springs. Ignorant show for ignorant people... yet very entertaining. Engineers will just scoff at the ridiculous judgement from self proclaimed "experts".

    • @samschegan1376
      @samschegan1376 6 лет назад +62

      @@taunokekkonen5733 The reason why leaf springs never caught on is because they're a design and tuning nightmare. Once you get them designed to where they work very well on your car, its great, and you can just keep using them on the future models, as long as the platform doesn't change, or the weight of the car doesn't drastically change. All the advantages mentioned above are unique to the corvette and what makes it easy for the engineers for that car to make it so low and light. The car doesn't have big shock towers like every other car, which is lighter and reduces parts in the frame and makes its construction less complicated. The corvettes frame, especially the c7, is very elegant. The reason why leaf springs are a design and tuning nightmare is because of the way they function. A conventional coil spring has a stiffness dictated by the material and thickness of the wire used to make the coils. It has a pretty linear stiffness throughout the deflection of the spring - that is to say, as the spring is compressed, you won't really see much of a change in stiffness. This is nice when trying to tune the ride rates/wheel rates, stiffness front to back and so on of your car. A lot of different coil springs exist, with different rates, that are easy to change out, and they all will have predictable stiffness throughout the springs travel. A leaf spring, in this case, a transverse spring being a slab of material laying across from one lower wishbone to another, is basically a custom piece to try to mimic what the coil springs do. This is fine, as all materials have stiffnesses or spring rates, except generally if you take a slab of material and bend it, as it deforms, the spring rate can change, which could make for some interesting driving dynamics. Now of course, generally if you stay in the elastic region of deformation, the rate/stiffness should stay pretty linear, and so you can expect a pretty linear increase in stiffness as the spring deforms, but it won't act exactly like how a coil spring will in how predictable it is. This is why a lot of care has to be taken in design the shape an cross section of the leaf spring to make sure it does act like a coil spring would. That is why if you look at a corvettes leaf springs, they get thinner and thicker and wider and more slender as you go from one side to the other, and coming up with that shape to get it to do what you want is not a strait forward task. Then when GM goes out to test the prototype cars, they might want to test a few different rates. Changing the leaf springs on that car means dropping the subframes and the rest of the suspension with it which is a pain, and your changing one custom spring for another, so you have to be sure that one of them is going to work. Its a nightmare, which is why it never caught on. I would not want to design them for a new car I was building. But once you have them, just keep using them as its a great setup.

    • @xXYannuschXx
      @xXYannuschXx 6 лет назад +11

      @@samschegan1376 Thanks to modern computers however, you can do 90% of the design of the spring before you even need to test it on a car or even manufacture a spring. I am sure GM did that already with the C6 and even the C5. The reason why it still doesnt catch on is the same however: money. How many suppliers are out there that produce a carbon fiber leaf spring? I bet you can count them with one hand. A traditional coil spring is FAR cheaper and modern car manufacturers like to cheap out on the most rediculous parts (Mercedes using non-oil-resistant rubber seals in their dry sumps, which lead to catastrophic engine failures in their AMG engines).

    The reason American cars are so cheaply made is to keep the cost down. Instead of paying almost $200k on a exotic super car I get a vette with almost the same performance for a 3rd of the price. I own a 2009 c6 with 60k miles and I've had barely any problems with it. It's a great car. Now since the c7 is out the quality is has gotten way better for almost the same price as it always has been. So it's now defiantly worth the value

      This is of course talking about the C6, the C7 is better built, but it's also more expensive. When you count in import tax it's almost as much as a mid-range F-type and the F-type is a much better car.

      exactly. The 2005 corvette did 0-60 in the low 4's with a good driver. Greatest thing about a corvette, you can spend a total of $3000 on 3.90 rear gears, an upgraded cam and tuning, and slightly stickier tires, and you'll be reliably putting down 450 horsepower to the road and do 0-60 in the 3.7 range.

    I’ve had a wide variety of cars: two Boxsters (both 986), a GT500, two M3s (e90, f80), an Audi S4, VW GTI, Miata, and my dad had and let me borrow all the time a 911 and S55 AMG. I just bought a 2007 base 6-speed Corvette the other day and I’m addicted to it. It’s so fun and such a great bargain. Got mine super clean with very low miles for $24k. It may be my favorite car so far, despite being 17 years old. Just feels “right”. The sound at wide open throttle is intoxicating and the engine just has gobs of torque and never feels held back. The 400hp Ls2 isn’t that impressive on paper but it’s underrated from the factory and only has to move 3200lbs of car.

    I'm kind of annoyed top gear didn't bother to do their research about the 'leaf spring suspension'. For one, it's transversely mounted and two. It's actually a hybrid suspension that gives near 'true' IDS for a fraction of the cost. Their comments were ignorant at best and dishonest at worst.

Also, all manual nsx has a ridiculously close ratio gear box which helps the initial acceleration a lot. The mr layout definitely guarantees a traction advantage for the nsx off the line as well. As a (c4) corvette owner, what they're saying is pretty accurate. Yes I do drive one and they are fun, but do you think Corvettes are cheap because GM is just being nice? No. For years, I think American car manufacturers have gotten away with stuff like this because the tasteless meat heads that only care about the engine, horsepower and numbers can easily be distracted from the rest of the car. So they can get away with skimping on the build quality and refinement because no one thinks about it. Is a Porsche, Ferrari or Aston Martin more expensive? Yeah. But as they say, "You get what you pay for". And honestly I think that most Americans are so used to shit, they don't really know what shit is any more. That goes for cars, movies, food, etc. I'm not trying to stereotype, it's just an observation.

      The price....it's all reflective in the price. You cannot compare the price of a 40k car (2005 Corvette) vs. the likes of a 100-200k car. Per quality of interior/materials. Go compare it the a 50k Porsche Boxster from 2005.....a car that is full of plastic....and delivers nothing close to the performance of the Corvette from the same model year. The only thing that American manufacturers have gotten away with is offering an alternative that is actually better, in many respects. Btw, SAE awarded the Corvette "Car of the Century"....alongside the Mercedes S500. To me, "build quality" = purpose + durability. In that case, it's the others that fail...miserably.

      Iron Thunder Plus the clutch isn’t tough to push in, the Tremec 6-speed, while maybe not Honda-slick, is completely fine. The throws are a tad long but it isn’t tough to row by any means.
      These cars get 30 mpg on the highway, are super reliable (often go 300k or more with regular maintenance), handle great (high limits, doesn’t do the best job of letting you know where they are though. Plus once reached, things get squirrelly real quick from my experience).
      This is a base model with the super bad tires and softest suspension. Just a tire switch would knock a good 2 sec off that time. Plus they weren’t even trying to do a clean lap.

    First off the TVR is pure expensive junk, the NSX cannot beat the Vette in a drag and the 911i is way more money. The Brits just do not seem to get value
    in a car ! The Corvette is the least costly car here by far and is also the least expensive to keep on the road over time
    I own a 911 and love it, but I am also tired of the bashing the Vette gets from these guys.

    • @SpitfireFortyFour
      @SpitfireFortyFour 4 года назад +1

      I recall TVRs being pretty cheap tbh. That was sort of their point, they were sort of sold as faux racing cars for the road. They're not really usable day to day because they're a bit too brutal.
      A Corvette could be used day to day, it actually has charisma and a soul unlike the 911 and its faster than the NSX.

    I don't blame you. And yeah, the mid engine cars have really good weight distribution normally pretty close to 50/50. Most cars that really handle well are front engine with the weight more near the front. It gives your steering a bigger effect during a slide. That's why porsches were so scary originally. All the weight was in the back. Great for turn in, but the second you'd lose grip you were gone. If you knew it was coming you could hold it, but no one is perfect, one mistake is all it takes.
