    as with all engines, new or used one needs to take care of them. Use of Fuel Additives in each tank to keep injectors and pumps cleaned. I have owned Diesel engines in trucks and tractors since 1984 having put 100k miles each and my current one has 240000 miles on it and is a 2004 Chevy Duelly truck and running great. but knowing that oil changes fuel filters fuel additives from several different brands have helped me do so. Seafoam products Lucas productes our what I found I liked best. Knowing the fuel around the world can have water and other problems to deal with Raycor filter with water separator are get help to keep the water from your engines. Land-based fuel stations have trouble with water also.

      Totally agree. We did everything we could to keep the engine alive for the last 3 years but sadly it wasn’t able to take on the pacific. 12000 hours is about 2000 more than these yanmars are expected the last in a salty marine environment so we did pretty well but it is still a crushing blow to hear it’s totally dead. 😢

    Here is an option that may be attractive. It is called the SeaFoam option. Put one or two cans in the oil, depending on the oil volume.
    "Add 1 to 1.5 ounces of Sea Foam to each quart of crankcase oil for all 4-cycle gasoline, rotary, and diesel engines. Use in all types of conventional and synthetic motor oils. One can of Sea Foam treats up to 16 quarts of motor oil.."
    Then start the engine and run it for 30 to 60 minutes adding SeaFoam from a spray can into the intake. Drain the engine oil and replace with new oil and filter.
    This will definitely reduce your oil usage and give somewhat better compression. It depends on the exact problem of your engine. You might get another 1000 hours out of it. That is a lot of sailing.
    Combine with the option of use the other engine as the primary and don't use the weak engine except when docking or other 2 essential engine maneuvers. This will give you many more effective hours since you are leaning on the good engine and the weak engine is only used when essential. So what if a little extra oil is used.
    In addition, there are oil additives that thicken oil and will also reduce oil usage. These are also effective engine life extenders.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Год назад

      Someone else mentioned seafoam. We haven’t found any of that yet but we did add some B2 thickener which reduced the smoke a little. The real concern is that the cylinder linings are scratched up and the piston heads aren’t aligned correctly due to failed bearings. Don’t want to throw a rod thru the hull when we try to run the engine. 🤔 still, we will try to keep the adventure going until we can find funds for a fix.

    • @thomasbrasse3145
      @thomasbrasse3145 Год назад

      They have metal in the oil, so this will not help. They'll do more damage the more they run it, meaning a more expensive rebuild. Unfortunately, they need to make a decision now of new engine or rebuild. If they haven't run it too long, the latter is cheaper and can be just as good.

      @@RedSeas I am an engineer and I also know from extensive mechanic experience that it is impossible to tell scratched walls or rings that are too tight from carbon. Since this is a diesel engine, the odds are very high that the carbon is the problem. The diesel fuel used is a lubricant which will prevent the scratching of cylinder walls. Double down on the seafoam search. You can find it online. You can ask the manufacturer who may have it in your area. You may need to go through a multistep process to find a source of seafoam. If it works, it is by far the cheapest way to a functioning engine. Regarding the failed bearings. Do you hear them pounding when under load? Piston heads do not align from bearings. If your mechanic told you that, you have a mechanic that is looking to make money from you. Pistons align with the bore based on the clearance of the piston to cylinder. Trust me, there is no misalignment between piston and cylinder bore. The clearances in even a completely worn out engine keep the alignment of pistons to bore perfect. Your mechanic is smoking you. Follow the money. Will he make money from you using him to replace the engine? I am on your side. I am not being critical of you. You have some very bad information. Double down on facts and data. That will tell you who tells the truth. What is the oil pressure? It should come up with increasing the viscosity of the oil. Very little oil pressure is needed by the bearings. The bearings work based on very different principles. The oil pressure is used for many other things in the engine, but never the bearings. The bearings work on the principle of relative motion of the rod on the crank. This creates a small high pressure area in a tiny area of the bearing that keeps the bearing away from the crank. No metal to metal contact from this rotation induced oil flow. If there is no pounding, the bearings and crank are fine. Furthermore, the low oil pressure is only a problem at high engine speeds. Set the engine speed at the maximum that oil pressure is maintained. It may be that you have a engine cooling problem. These are extremely common in marine diesel engines. And they are easy to solve. The salt water is a constant challenge to any engine. But there are solutions to those problems and they are far cheaper than a new engine.

    You got two engines, you can use the spair and nurse the other when ever you need to dock. You can sail most of the time, so I think it is possible.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Год назад

      That’s what we have been thinking. The challenge is some of the atols ahead of us require two engines from a safety point of view (on our cat. One engine alone means the boat will struggle to maintain a straight course in high currents). However, as we said at the end of the episode, we will keep pushing on with the adventure and hopefully together we can all work out a solution to keep the adventure safe and fun.

    • @alanpiper9614
      @alanpiper9614 Год назад

      @@RedSeas Guys, you need to avoid using that engine. It may be able to be rebuilt now, but if you use it it will 99.9% do irreparable damage. You don’t want to have a catastrophic failure by throwing a conrod through the block. That could possibly damage the hull and cause flooding or it could cause a fire from the oil and fuel escaping through the hole in the block being ignited by the high heat generated and sparks from throwing a conrod. Think safety first. If you have to, use your dingy on the port side in place of that engine if needed. You will need to budget for rebuilding or replacing the other engine as well as I mentioned before due to the high engine hours, 12000 hrs +. If you are going to go down the road of replacing the engine, consider a Beta or a Nanni replacement if doing both engines. They both use Kubota engines which are excellent and engine parts are a lot cheaper and a lot more easily available as they are used in all industries (farming equipment (tractors etc), generators, mining, earth moving etc). Kubota are the worlds largest small diesel engine manufacturer and are worldwide, even in the remote corners of the world. As an interim measure, see if you can pick up a cheap used engine to get you by until you can get to somewhere that you can do a proper job of either rebuilding or replacing both engines.
      Set up a PayPal account which will make it easier for many to help you out with some $.
      Cheers

    Hi guys, a big end problem is a problem. You don't need a con rod popping out the side of the block.
    I shall watch the engine episode and access it.
    I have been a mechanic since 1974.
    Possibly in Tahiti you may even find a cheap second hand Volvo engine that can retro fit easily.
    On your travels through Thailand down the way you will probably be able to pick up a brand new non electronic Yanmar to suit your boat.
    They were available a couple of years ago.
    Just a few ideas, other than that strip it down and send the crank to New Zealand from Papeete for a regrind.
    Guaranteed you will find someone up there that can help you out.
    I lived and worked in Rarotonga Cook Islands and we found many ways to do things. One guy made a jig to resurface a 4 cylinder heads by bolting them to his lathe chuck and then being able to use the tool rest to machine them while the head was spinning around.
    You will find an engine guy, but you might want to be good at French 😂.
    Take care, Steve.

    You have option 4, semi overhaul both engines yourselves, i did actually offer my advice, i know pretty much exactly why that engine is failing, you cooked it! Now it has a blown head gasket, (white smoke steam) the blue smoke is oil, the piston rings have been heated to a stage they are not longer “springy” so basically the sump oil is by passing the fooked rings and getting burnt in the combustion chamber (blue smoke) the metal filings you found in the sump? Although i didn’t get a good look, i was bet they are big end bearings, The reason why you cooked it is now irrelevant.. i will still make that offer, you get the boat to a place you can order part’s and myself (35 years a motor mechanic) sub specialty (engine rebuilding) Plus because I’ve technically never worked on that particular engine type (which doesn’t concern me at all, an engine is an engine)
    But i do have other mechanics who are marine, to walk you through the entire process.. not one sentence and leave you to it, I will stay on-line with you as required.. there will be parts and tools you will need to buy, So me using your hands is free, But it still won’t be completely free, as I can’t compromise, i say, you do.. and we do both engines, and get another 10 years out of both..

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Год назад +1

      Totally, double the engines = double the problems 😂 the real issue is that navigating in tight spaces or under high current with only one engine pushing one hull and trying to pull the other can result in some dangerous steering issues. Particularly with the atolls or the Tuamotus ahead. In open water passaging terms it’s not that much of an issue but it does build towards a safety concern.

    Nice video hey guys well you're diesel running don't worry about it just keep the oil up remember diesels take a lot of oil if you're two quarts down it's not the end of the world but just keep it topped off every now and then the most important thing is keep your fuel clean when you run your engine the most important thing on a boat diesel start it bring it to idle we'll let it idle for about 10 minutes get it the temperature running temperature then run the engine when you shut your engine off bring it back to idle idle for about 5 minutes then shut it off especially if you have a turbo I couldn't tell but when you run from a 1500 or more RPMs and then bring it to idle bring it to idle for a good 5 minutes so all the oils are are brought back into the turbo with more pressure for lubricant now eBay has a lot of diesel repair people that sometimes will do a swap out of course swap for a new rebuilt engine really cheap I mean really cheap but your engine runs and when you get back to real civilization I mean real civilization you need to have a real good diesel mechanic spend a little time with it it mi Cool Hand San Pedro California it mite need just a top end to be redone it looks like yamar engine but I can't really seeing this have a great day

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  Год назад

      Some great wisdom in here. As it stands, our big end is where things are really concerning. The engine isn’t a turbo or electronically controlled (thankfully) but it looks like piston arm bearings, pistons. rings, cylindars and pretty much all seals have had it so it’s going to be a re-milling of the block, replacing most of the camshaft side of things and sledging the cylinder before we can find out if it’s going to run again. Given the engine has well over 10,000 hours on it, we aren’t holding our breath that a rebuild will work out but a swap out is certainly an option. The costs involved appear to be pretty close to a new beta or similar given the yanmar 4jh4e is no longer available and all their current options are electronic control. Still, plenty of planning ahead of us but we have seen so much amazing support already.

      @@RedSeas Never idle a diesel for that long on startup. Maximum idle on start up is 1 minute to break the chill and get the oil circulated, after that the engine needs some load to bring the heat up and keep the rings bedded to the cylinder wall. If allowed to idle for excessive time on start up you run the risk of glazing the bores (polishing), then the rings won’t seal/seat properly against the cylinder walls and you will get more blow by and high oil consumption. On shut down idle it for no more than a couple of minutes for the temperature to come down, and if it is a turbo, to let the turbo slow down to idle speed. This is basic diesel mechanics 101.
