I think Magcargo should get an ability that gives it immunity to Water. Its pokedex entry literally says that water is vaporized on contact. So if it had Water Absorb or Dry Skin (is lava wet or dry..?) It would alleviate a 4X weakness and give it more recovery :D

I mean right now you would only use it to breed, its dandy to not be able to get frozen but only fire types get the ability and only using it because of a 10% chance is not a good choice And it would even kind of make sense since a magma armor could vaporize water like you said and since it vaporizes there isnt a need for some bonus like hp recovery

It's also based on aurorae, which are made of light emitted from ions in the sky. Power Gem is specifically described as being "a ray of light that sparkles as if it were made of gemstones". And Aurorus cannot learn it through any means. Oh, and while we're here, Aurorus doesn't get Aurora Veil either. That's right. An Aurora-based Ice-type Pokemon with a hidden ability of Snow Warning and with a defensive stat spread does not get Aurora Veil. I have no words to describe how dumbfounded I am at how Aurorus cannot learn these moves.

Recover on snail makes perfect sense as snail as they can regenerate from grievous wounds even growing back whole eyes and eye stalks it cut off you also see this fellow poke-snails Gastrodon and Shelmet. I love Magcargo he got great utility moves Clear smog, double screens, stealth rock, willo-wisp etc... but can never get into a good spot to use it what with its crippling 4x ground/ water weaknesses. The introduction of another slow bulky fire/rock in Coalossal just seems like a huge middle finger to Magcargo.
Positives: - Good offensive typing Negatives - Poor stats in general - Very low speed - Very poor defensive typing - Outclassed by pretty much every Fire type
I love Magcargo. I don't PvP (online) so I don't really care about that. Currently replaying Omega Ruby and I'm gonna get him as my main in the team. I also hope to get all TCG cards of Magcargo someday, just love the fact that hes a big Lava Snail, so goofy :)

I once had a Magcargo, on my Pokémon Colosseum team. Coincidentally, it was with a bunch of other Generation 2 Pokémon considered "bad" at the time, like Meganium, Ampharos, and Quagsire, with the game's two Starters, Espeon and Umbreon, heading the team. They may not have been the best Pokémon for the job, but they sure worked hard! D: As for how I'd fix Magcargo: give it an evolution. Here's one I came up with for a fanon wiki on Fandom: -Snailcano, the Hot Metal Pokémon -Type: Fire/Steel -Abilities: Sheer Force, Flame Body, or Desolate Land (hidden) -Base stats: 110 HP, 30 Attack, 120 Defense, 135 Special Attack, 120 Special Defense, 5 Speed (total: 520) Could possibly also work as a Mega Evolution for Maggy. Should point out that this was written for a game where Fire types were naturally immune to freezing, meaning Slugma and Magcargo would also get Sheer Force, as Magma Armor would now be redundant.
What makes Magcargo a bad shell smash user is it's horrid speed. Even at +2 it's still gonna get outspeed by lots of things and other shell smash users have some ways to mitigate their poor speed, wether by better stats like defense to take hits better and have higher attack, better typing and priority attacks. Aside from Shuckle, Magcargo is the least threatening Shell Smash user and it is honestly in my opinion at least, one of the worst pokemon out there. It's stats are build for it to be a tank but it has low stats all around, crippling typing that make taking hits extremely difficult and it's abilities just don't do anything for it.

Magcargo is always overshadowed by other fire types. Weak armor + Shell Smash + Focus Sash makes it a powerhouse if your opponent goes for a physical move, then you can outspeed and sweep the rest of the person's team because of it's high special attack and the access to Ancient Power, Flamethrower, and Earth Power.
Magcargo could actually be pretty good in medium difficulty battles if it’s Speed wasn’t so shitty. I know it’s because he’s a snail, but it’s a waste of his offensively great type combo.
Magcargo introduced the notion that some pokemon are better off without evolving weak to fighting and quad weak to water and ground wtf. How bout we talk about pyroar and how underwheming everyone finds it.
I have moderate succes with my evil Focus Sash Magcargo, carrying Lava Plume, Stealth Rock, Memento and Clear Smog. Stealth Rocks is guaranteed to go up unless you get hit with Fake Out, and after that you basically try to secure a burn with Flame Armor and/or Lava Plume, or you go for Memento to pave the way for one of your Pokémon to get a free turn of setup while the opponent switches. Clear Smog is for when people try to set up on you, which is common. Is it unreliable? Yes! Is it fun to use? Also yes!
Other give it a mega evolution if that ever returns or a straight up evolution and make it a fire/steel type. Magcargo is so hot so it’s basically like the earths core and the earths core is iron (steel). Give it a new move called conduction where it melts and wraps itself around the enemy and just burns tf out of it. Oh and make it’s physical attack sky rocket to 130 Here’s its stats Hp: 80 Atk: 130 Def: 180 Sp.atk: 30 Sp.def: 90 Spd: 20 Total: 530
Rollout and Stealth Rock are the only rock moves homeboy here needs. Rollout is what made Whitney the most Intimidating gym leader in Pokémon history. So yeah! Rollout makes Magcargo worth something and rock is absurdly OP.
PaPaSea With an ability called "Evaporation" which gives it an immunity to Water attacks and makes Fire moves SE against Water types referencing its pokedex.

The new ability "steam engine" would be a funny concept for a lava snail moving faster when hit with water.
It should drop its speed at least but that's a good buff to make it viable

Yeah,Magcargo Is pretty useless...but for some reason I always had a soft spot for it,so I still choose to use it in some of my playthroughs!

I decided to use a magcargo for my ORAS team. The only real reason I used it was for rock slide against flying types.
I always forget Magcargo and Slugma are Gen 2. Cause it's so bad its only real use it as an egg hatcher.
