I'm gonna throw out Larvitar for a gen 4 run. I'm guessing a bunch of struggle between the slow leveling and about half of the gyms. Maybe Platinum just to make it faster?
It sounds like a hard run, and maybe late game it is, but larvitar basically wrecks gyms 1-4, and gym 6 and 7. That makes sense, the defense stats skyrocket so much that they more than make up for the additional x2 multiplier. Plus the additional HP, no matter how little, also makes it tankier.

I appreciate the effort at brute forcing, but sometimes it's worth revisiting the TM Movepool and seeing if you can get creative!
No kidding. I've been watching MDB for a long time now, and there's some runs like this that _really_ showcase how little he actually knows about Pokemon. It's a shame.
@@enerc2333 I think its ok as he is doing them more for fun and entertainment and not so much for time and tier list placement. If he did it on the scale of Jrose or Gym Leader Matt, I could see the need for optimization. But MDB runs are pure fun, and I think its ok to not do as much in the strategy department if its not needed.
I get you’re used to having to brute force it, but you had quite a few options to make that end less painful. Sunny day, amnesia, EV training, you had choices you could’ve made instead of brute force.
I know I'm a little late to this comment section, but... EV training isn't as useful in solo runs - since you're battling everything with that one 'mon anyway - so any EV training efforts you do put in aren't going to be enough to make a significant difference. And... it's been a long time since I played Emerald, but aside from HP and Speed... and maybe Special Defense... I don't recall any other good EV grinding spots until late in the game. ALSO, bear in mind in 3rd gen there's no way to refund/reduce EVs, so any unwanted EVs are stuck on your 'mon. ... all that said, I do agree that Amnesia would have been a big help in this run. He could have used that.
I really appreciate the transparency you have in regards to the the things you endorse. You're a really genuine person and it shines through. Stay great, MDB.
You say “the grind is brutal” so often it warrants a spot on a shirt. Hopefully a breathable tank top for working out 💪🏼 (and perhaps your top picks for the _most_ brutal Pokémon to grind with)
Well he would have used a turn to set up. Which leaves it open to being hit. As Macargo is not so speedy. So probably the damage reduction was maybe not justified. Also the moveset. Yawn may have worked better.
@@lurkingone7079 Yawn takes 2 turns to set up. You can’t tell me it was a better choice than sunny day, especially during the later part of the game. It would have been especially helpful during the drake fight, where Magcargo would have had plenty of opportunities to set it up.
Loved today's video, looking forward to even more fun next Saturday with Growlithe. I recently did a Growlithe run on my own albeit with Egg Moves. Even without, it is a bit of a challenge. Beware the Water Onix.
Next time you have to grind in emerald I would suggest using the rematch feature on route 117. Those two breeders have 5 pokemon each that give around 1k exp each pokemon, plus a few more trainers on the route you can rematch.
Even on the route he was on, Beauty Jessica and Gentleman Walter have a pretty good rematch rate, and those two provide good exp. There were definitely better methods for that.
24:13 that's not the only problem: Kingdra's ability is Swift Swim, meaning its speed stat doubles in rain. The moment Whiscash uses Rain Dance, you're doomed And before anyone comments: yes, I know he acknowledged it, just wrote it before noticing, my bad.
@@jubinfinity you may be right, I just always associated Shell Smash with Clamperl in my head Cause I remember trying to make a rain team with Huntail as the main sweeper with Shell Smash. But it must have been in ORAS
Why doesn't it have Water Absorb? Its Sapphire dex entry literally states that "Water is vaporized on contact. If this Pokémon is caught in the rain, the raindrops instantly turn into steam, cloaking the area in a thick fog." That would at least remove _one_ quad weakness. But if anything, Magcargo needs better stats. It's a fully evolved Pokemon that you get at level 38, same as Muk which has _500 BST_ instead of Magcargo's *410* (or 430 from Gen 7 onward).
This makes me wonder how different a Numel run would be since it is still super weak to water types. And sure, I'm pretty sure I could try it myself, but I just enjoy your commentary too much XD
I have gotten a Magcargo in almost every Nuzlocke run I've done... and had it die almost immediately every time. Generally not even to water moves (although a couple of times to unexpected water moves).
@@That_Doctor_Del_Fella Yeah, although I'm starting to think Magcargos just die around me. 3 of them died from not just a crit, but a crit **range** where they should've been safe even from most crits. I've attempted less than 10 Nuzlockes, that's way too many freak deaths.
It reminds me of MandJtv doing heartgold (I think) without catching pokemon. He used a slugma that you get as an egg and it was definitely the weak point of the team. Even against pokemon it should be good against.
Oh my gawd, that Kingdra just using double team rest and water pulse is brutal. Way to get that win! (I'm laughing but embarrassed I clapped when you got the knock out lol)
Hey ! Amazing video as always, and I've got an idea for a challenge : Eevee is THE pokemon that was made to be evolved in order to be actually used, right ? Well, what if you did an "Eevee Only" run ? Could work on any game, as it's been here from the beginning.
@@trueMCGRaven dam I overestimated magcargo That being said why wasn't reflect or light screen used or sunny day Did we really need body slam over these moves
I'd seen your crazy challenges with unevolved stuff before and thought "Yeah I guess that's doable" but I never imagined this one would be a success, I thought for sure Wallace would just be impossible. Props and kudos to you for making one of my least favorite pokemon ever made into the league champion.
That back-and-forth Kingdra battle was wild. Surprised by how much it emphasized its evasion. Not to mention that unlucky confusion from Water Pulse at the end that barely even registered when I watched, due to the heavy reliance on Double Team and Rest.
14:54 My Linoone also uses Belly Dance to cut its health in half to maximize its attack! In fact, this Linoone singlehandedly swept the Pokemon Champion in Ruby, thanks to that move!
Maybe I missed as to why, but why didn't you just start things off in the rock gym with yawn? It leaves you open to 1 attack but has anywhere from 2-5 turns without retaliation. I could be absolutely wrong, but I didn't see this moveset used at all.
He needed to burn Roxanne's Pokémon to halve their attacks because rock tomb did too much damage. He preferred that instead of the risk of trying to put them to sleep.
@@purpleheartneptune6267 It’s just a hard challenge with how psywave works, kind of like metronome only. Maybe add a rule where you can use another move against dark types if it’s in a gen other than gen 1
Finally I been waiting for this video for years since no one ever uses Magcargo. I wish Magcargo had Smell Smash in this generation (I don't even know if the move was in gen 3) which I find to be useful on a Magcargo since it helps raise all his stats in taking up his defense. Which isn't horrible for a mon with high defense. I know this isn't the best Pokemon out their but I love Magcargo. One of my most favorite Pokemon of all time.
Errrr, there is zero situations where evolving makes you worse. Ground attacks are physical, so x4 sounds worse than x2, but you're also only receiving 1/3 thanks to your defense. Water comes out as even. So yeah. evolving is better. Unless you're worried about fighting or steel. But yeah, you shouldn't be
Not as much for Steel because Fire is resistant on its own, thus resulting to be type neutral against Magcargo. Now Fighting on the other hand is a yes because it's super effective.
That's only by base stat. In a damage calc triple defense would be worth a moderate amount less and since evs are additive they provide more percentage benefit to lower stats. Magcargo is legitimately more vulnerable to water moves in this game than Slugma is.
Yeah, I kinda wonder why people were telling him to use Magcargo. Water moves TECHNICALLY do more damage to Magcargo but Slugma dies just as quickly to them in most situations anyways... Fighting moves end up doing less despite the 2x boost because of how much more defense Magcargo has over Slugma.
At 24:15 one other effect of Whiscash using Rain Dance is that it triggers Kingdra's Swift Swim. So if Magcargo's chances of outspeeding were basically zero before, now they're entirely outside the realm of plausibility.
Sabu and Rocky are ADORABLE! Also, because you named Sabu after a wrestler, I automatically attribute Rocky to "IF YOU SMEEELLLALALALALALA! WHAT THE ROCK...IS COOKING?!"(God, I'm weird lol).
14:52 "And Linoone just used belly dance" Ah, my favorite pokemon move, belly dance, learned by the likes of Medicham, Oricorio and Lopunny in addition to Linoone for some reason.
magcargo is probably one of my favorite pokemon, love the design yes the stats are boop but he would be part of my team along with golduck magenium and fearow some kind of eeevee lution maybe vape and raikou
Man, you should start counting the amount of tries each major fight in the runs takes, and just popping it up on screen when you beat it. Gotta admit, I'm curious as hell to know how long it took
You could have won at level 25 with Slugma if you had just used Yawn on Nosepass at the start of the battle. Thank you for starting with Slugma! Some uploaders start with a level 5 fully evolved non-stone, non-item, evolution pokémon when it evolves at a specific level through training. Why keep Yawn if you don't use it? If you replace Yawn with Sunny Day it'll empower Flamethrower. This is a very entertaining Pokémon Emerald playthrough.
I never even realised the pun in Magcargo's name in my 15+ years of playing pokemon until you pronounced it like you do, always wondered where the snail theme went with the evolution. Now my mind is blown, thank you
"Man that run was pretty brutal. Near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit. Even near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit." Very entertaining to hear.
what a run! I thought you would have to be level 90 to win, but as the video progressed I realized that wouldn't be the case. you always bring a lot of personality to your ads, so I'm never compelled to skip! ive seen a countless amount of VPN ads, but im considering getting Surfshark and using your code! also, love the red text border in the run :)
I think people don't understand how stats work... If you are getting 3x the defense when you evolve, it doesn't matter that you are taking another 2x more from ground moves, you are still taking less damage (about 33% less). Same goes for special defense. If you are getting double the special defense, then it cancels out the extra 2x you are taking from water moves... Not to mention that if it was Gen IV onwards and you get Sandstorm you also get a 50% SpDef buff for being a rock-type, so even less damage taken from water moves and any other special attack for that matter. In other words, Slugma is still a harder challenge because of the lower other stats and taking mroe damage from ground moves.
Let me put it this way In the hundreds? of videos I've watched like this from different youtubers and browsing the comment sections for several years now, this is _literally_ the first time I've ever seen someone mention how those stats actually work.
With your pronunciation of Magcargo I for the first time realized the name comes from escargot. I'm so used to the (wrong, but official) pronunciation of Magcargo like "my cargo" that I never thought about that.
Checked the video length right after the flying gym and saw over 20 minutes left in the video. Psychic and water gyms will be brutal, not to mention Wallace as Champion. This is gonna be crazy
Inspired by you, I tried a Slugma/Magcargo run too. Luckily mine was Hasty (gotta go fast), female (immune to Luvdisc's Attract), and had a 65 BP Hidden Power Grass. It could be titled "How I learned to stop worrying and love Fire Blast" towards the end. Here's how I won some important battles: - Roxanne done at 22 (mdb at 27). Yawn and Harden did the job with the help of the AI using status moves at times. - Brawly at 24. Yawned Machop, set up Harden so the AI feels the need to boost w/ bulk up instead of attacking me, then set up once or twice more when it's asleep, 2hko w/ ember. You have to always attack Meditite because Focus Punch is dangerous. Ember can 2hko, but depleting Brawly's potions with Rock Throw is better. Stall out the light screen if it puts that up. Yawn Makuhita, use Harden. it's very bulky. Beware of Reversal when it's below half. Use Harden instead of attacking further and risking a big reversal after it wakes up. - The rival on the way to Mauville is a nightmare. I was at level 31. I made a save state to see if it's better to sacrifice Rock Throw for Amnesia (I had doubts about the mid-term consequences, but still). Put Lombre to sleep to set up Amnesias and Hardens on it. You only 3hko the Slugma, but the worst it can do is use Yawn, in which case you just Yawn it back. Make sure to be awake against the Marshtomp. I put it to sleep and spammed Ember. - Got rid of Amnesia for Winona. Set up Hardens in advance to take Altaria's Earthquake. - Beat Maxie in his hideout at 55 like you, but i gave Magcargo a Persim Berry, Yawned Mightyena and set up 2 Hardens on it. the AI seems to prioritize speed-lowering moves if you're faster, so it used Scary Face then tried to Swagger. I reached +1 attack, ate a weakened Earthquake but bringing Camerupt to red with Rock Slide. Maxie's Super Potion didn't heal enough, so it was dead. I wasn't gonna outspeed Crobat even without Scary Face anyway. - Against T&L, I had to drop some defense EVs to invest in special attack and special defense. I beat them at 59. Needed to one-shot Claydol with fire blast, so I had to equip a Charcoal. Put Lunatone to sleep before it could get annoying, but then Xatu used Confuse Ray. If I hit just a little harder, I could have held a Lum or Persim instead. Luckily I only lost one turn to confusion. Threw rocks at Xatu, then Solrock came out. It loves using Sunny Day and then Solar Beam off its shitty special attack, so I used a powered up Fire Blast on Lunatone to get rid of it. Solrock was no threat at all. Fun fact: 120 bp fire blast under the sun from a fire type to a rock type actually does more than an 65 bp grass move. STAB makes it 180, then sun 270. Even when cut down to 135 by the resistance, 135>130. - Beat Juan at a nice level in a save state, but that's a bit too inconsistent for my taste. Deleted anything but Kingdra with Hidden Power (65 BP, Grass), but had to set up Amnesia on Sealeo to prepare for Kingdra. I think Luvdisc critting me led Kingdra to attack instead of setting up Double Teams, which would have been more annoying. I'd popped the Rock Tomb TM to slow the Kingdra down and possibly flinch it, but one evasion boost would have reduced Rock Tomb's accuracy to Hypnomiss levels. On another attempt, I lost less HP by setting up on Luvdisc with a Persim Berry, so I won. - I beat Drake @ 89. The other E4 members were easy, but Drake resists fire and my physical attack is crap. Not to mention Flygon resists rock too anyway. I'd gotten rid of all my defense EVs, Rock Tomb and Amnesia for Harden and Substitute before entering the building. I planned to make my subs unbreakable against physical attacks with Harden, and if I timed it right, my sub could have even withstood Salamence's Dragon Claw, allowing me to face Kingdra under a sub. Actually I couldn't time it right, so Mence broke my damaged sub, but Kingdra flinched and this changed everything. When I decided to test my theory by timing my subs more carefully, I won easily. As long as you land your Rock Slides and Fire Blasts, you're good. - Beat Wallace @ 89 too with two different methods. The first one was very haxy, so I didn't like it. I had Substitute, Fire Blast, Rock Slide and Earthquake, and held a White Herb to retain my attack despite Gyarados' Intimidate. I lost more than 1/4 HP to Wailord's Water Spout, so couldn't have survived Milotic's Surf if my Rock Slide didn't crit (or flinch for that matter). Second time around, I had Substitute, Protect, Rock Slide and Fire Blast and held a Shell Bell. I stalled out Wailord's Water Spout with Protect and Substitute, then attacked. It used Rain Dance, so I had to stall out the rain turns too. One-shot Ludicolo without the rain, but I wasn't affected by Gyarados' Intimidate thanks to the sub. I threw rocks at it, then Tentacruel came. Rock Slide made it flinch, but even so, the chance of Tentacruel landing its Hydro Pump without getting flinched was 56%, about the same chance as Sing, Disable and stuff. I two-shot it, then Milotic destroyed my sub, and barely survived Whiscash to two-shot it. - Steven @ 90. Set up Hardens on Skarmory under subs, then spammed Fire Blasts under the sun. Claydol can get annoying if it sets a Light Screen, though.
Here's advice for grinding past the normal gym in any Hoenn game, the Gabby and Ty traveling news crew are always able to be battled and their locations are north of Mauville past the rock smash rock, east of Mauville past the sea, and east of Fortree, use a Magikarp or Feebas dud for single Pokemon challenges, also easy money, also go back to Littleroot to get the amulet coin for extra money
You know what I would like to see in one of these Emerald runs? What happens if the Magikarp's level is a lot, lot higher. Right now the AI always takes it out first (because I assume it sees the kill), but what if it was at level 100? Would both enemies then focus on your single-run Pokemon, and how would that impact the run?
At that point the AI would just default to spam Earthquake/any supereffective move and/or attack randomly until either the featured pokemon or the Magikarp gets into KO range, which would thrn draw aggro onto it with a move that kills. That's why the Magikarp is so low level, because it's only used to get around the arbitrary "at least 2 pokemon" requirement and should affect the battle as little as possible; if it was high level enough you could exploit the AI not having a fixed target to, say, set up or getting free hits on them.
@@darkfiredragon3410 Cool, thanks for explaining! I was wondering if the fight could be made even more difficult by having a level 100 Magikarp, thinking that both AIs then focus on the "main" Pokemon. But yeah in that case it would actually be a help; we wouldn't want that! ;)
in the second May fight, you should’ve just used amnesia all the way up against the lombre or slugma you probably would’ve been able to beat the marshtomp. Mud shot would still be a problem but you could definitely 2 shot if not 1 shot him

Same. Also is the Metronome available in Gen 3? If so, that might have been a better held item than Charcoal.
@@alecbiswell-ayres5084 metronome (the item) was introduced in gen 4

Didn't think this was actually possible. Congratulations on an incredible run.
I get you’re used to having to brute force it, but you had quite a few options to make that end less painful. Sunny day, amnesia, EV training, you had choices you could’ve made instead of brute force.
Was thinking amnesia/harden for eq/water moves
@@insulttothehumanrace3807 3rd gen had the EV reducing berries. He’s actually used them before on the channel.

You say “the grind is brutal” so often it warrants a spot on a shirt. Hopefully a breathable tank top for working out 💪🏼 (and perhaps your top picks for the _most_ brutal Pokémon to grind with)
Could also be a simpler design with patches of grass below the text (plus it would get around the game freak copyright)
34:17 "Near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit. Even near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit."
I love the implication of belly dance as a move. Especially on a Pokémon like Snorlax, that's a whole show!
I imagined a Snorlax belly dancing and that was the hardest laugh I've had in a while, thank you from one stranger on the Internet to another
I’m curious, why didn’t you use Sunny Day at any point? Doesn’t sunlight halve the damage water moves deal to you?
Well he would have used a turn to set up. Which leaves it open to being hit. As Macargo is not so speedy. So probably the damage reduction was maybe not justified. Also the moveset. Yawn may have worked better.
@@lurkingone7079 Yawn takes 2 turns to set up. You can’t tell me it was a better choice than sunny day, especially during the later part of the game.

wonder what that would look like, possibly some cursed mix of magcargo and yamask

24:13 that's not the only problem:
Kingdra's ability is Swift Swim, meaning its speed stat doubles in rain. The moment Whiscash uses Rain Dance, you're doomed
And before anyone comments: yes, I know he acknowledged it, just wrote it before noticing, my bad.
Huh, I thought Magcargo could learn shell smash in Gen 3, didnt realize it was a Gen 5 move. I thought it was Clamperl signature move in Gen 3 tbh
I think shell smash was carocosta’s signature move

"you all know i love wrestling right of course you do i never shut up about it" and we love you for it
I’ve always loved Magcargo’s design just a shame it’s a trash Pokémon, definitely needs an evolution or regional variant

And sure, I'm pretty sure I could try it myself, but I just enjoy your commentary too much XD
I’m just so happy to have seen the cat during the ad. CATS ARE AMAZING
I have gotten a Magcargo in almost every Nuzlocke run I've done... and had it die almost immediately every time. Generally not even to water moves (although a couple of times to unexpected water moves).
Its a shame because I actually like Magcargo. Its a fun idea, but its typings and stats really let it down
@@That_Doctor_Del_Fella Yeah, although I'm starting to think Magcargos just die around me.

I guessed lvl 25 on beating Roxanne. That was a tough battle. Jeez.
My guess was lvl 30, haven't watched the conclusion of the fight yet, but I also think it'll be pretty hard
That back-and-forth Kingdra battle was wild. Surprised by how much it emphasized its evasion. Not to mention that unlucky confusion from Water Pulse at the end that barely even registered when I watched, due to the heavy reliance on Double Team and Rest.
Pokemon black with one zorua

Week 22 of requesting a psywave only run!!!

@@purpleheartneptune6267 It’s just a hard challenge with how psywave works, kind of like metronome only. Maybe add a rule where you can use another move against dark types if it’s in a gen other than gen 1
I’m not going to question it. All I have to say is:
Yes.
Not gonna happen, he already said he never gonna do probarly during one of his videos.
Why make the distinction? Either way it’s a difficult challenge
0:50 Hm yes, "Mascargo", the incredible Masquerain + Magcargo fusion.

MDB: Of course the first water type we ran into made us faint
Crawdaunt, Sealeo, and Walrein: Am I a joke to you?
Nosepass wasted a lot of turns because the emerald AI is less likely to use Rock Tomb if the pokemon it controls is faster than you
14:52 "Belly Dance" sounds like a great name for a Spe Atk raising version of Belly Drum

34:17 "Near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit, even near the start of the run I was having to grind quite a bit."
Man, you should start counting the amount of tries each major fight in the runs takes, and just popping it up on screen when you beat it. Gotta admit, I'm curious as hell to know how long it took
7:55 I would never have guessed there was a trainer under that umbrella!
Lol how did MDB know we play this game in the background 😂 somehow like the video playing while I’m doing other things
Now I'm imagining a Linoone performing a belly dance during the Norman fight. Would look so wacky!
I never even realised the pun in Magcargo's name in my 15+ years of playing pokemon until you pronounced it like you do, always wondered where the snail theme went with the evolution. Now my mind is blown, thank you
Marcargo’s design always caught my Interest. I would raise one in ruby only to struggle using him in my primary team now I know because of bad stats

Let me put it this way
In the hundreds? of videos I've watched like this from different youtubers and browsing the comment sections for several years now, this is _literally_ the first time I've ever seen someone mention how those stats actually work.
Well, this is a fine example of why Slugma is the fire starter in the Trashlocke rom lol. Also dem cats at the end with the little mews~
I used magcargo in my very first Pokémon sapphire play through. I love the design of this Pokémon so much, just wish its stats weren’t so sad ☹️
Here's how I won some important battles:
- Roxanne done at 22 (mdb at 27).
At first i was wondering why it took 38 minutes and then it hit me. Oh yeah. Earthquake and water pulse.
That Pokemon League champion fight was nutso.
Nice run ! I'm surprised that you kept yawn without using it while macargo could learn sunny day 🤔
The Juan fight with the Meteor Falls theme playing reminded me of von Kaiser from King of Fighters
I'm glad you didn't fall for Norman's linoone's "belly dance".
But yeah in that case it would actually be a help; we wouldn't want that! ;)
I really loved how Norman's Linoone Bellydanced
in the second May fight, you should’ve just used amnesia all the way up against the lombre or slugma you probably would’ve been able to beat the marshtomp. Mud shot would still be a problem but you could definitely 2 shot if not 1 shot him
Wow man Steve was brutal! More than one Pokemon with earthquake was too much! MdB you were very bold putting macargo to the test! Wow! Very courageous, one of the hardest challenge, if not the hardest!

“Hey I’m fast asleep but you’re still going to miss me half a dozen times.”
I’m confused on the logic here, but it makes about as much sense as peck / fly hitting ghosts so I’ll let it slide.
Teaching magcargo sunny day would potentially help with somewhat dealing with the water gym/water mons in general. You could even pair it with solar beam (which magcargo can also learn) to have a combo that both helps offensively as well as defensively.
